    MUMBAI: US broadcaster TV Land will count down The 100 Greatest TV Quotes and Catchphrases next month.

    This will be a week-long look at the memorable sayings from American cartoons, television series, commercials and news programmes over the past 60 years.

    The quotes that have made the cut include Donald Trump’s parting shot to the loser of the business based reality show The Apprentice “You’re fired”, Holy crap! from the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond which airs in India on Star World and MTV’s iconic phrase I want my MTV! which was made legendary in the Dire Straits song Money For Nothing.

    Another phrase that made it is Oh my God! They killed Kenny! from the acerbic animated show South Park. The phrase for the show X-Files The truth is out there is also present. In the news category not surprisingly Neil Armstrong’s quip of “One small step for man one giant leap for mankind” after he became the first man to step on the moon is also present. Then there is the late JFK’s call to his countrymen, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” The expression that film critics Roger Ebert and the late Gene Siskel used in rating a film “Two thumbs up!” or “Thumbs Down” that has influenced film critics who came after them is also there.

    TV Land president Larry W. Jones says, “We have found that television is such a huge part of Baby Boomers’ DNA that it makes sense that so much of America’s pop culture jargon has come from TV. We are sure that The 100 Greatest TV Quotes & Catchphrases will strike a chord with the TV
    Generation and will illustrate the influence the medium has had on pop culture.”

    Kalyan Sundaram returns to Sahara One as programming head

    MUMBAI: SaharaOne has appointed Kalyan Sundaram to head programming for the channel.

    Sundaram was roped into the network in 2004 when the new team structure was being set in place as the non-fiction programming head.

    A year later Sundaram moved onto Zee Arabia, a division of Zee International as the creative head.

    Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Kalyan Sundaram said, “I was with channel for a year before I moved on to Zee Arabia Dubai. But I have always shared a special bond with Sahara and now I am back to head our programming plans for the channel.”

    With prior experience at MTV and B4U Music, Sundaram returns to SaharaOne as the network plans to spruce up its programming line up with six new shows, two being Solhar Singaarr and Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye. Two more additions being Zaara Pyaar Ki Saugat and Ghar Ek Sapna were officially announced today.

    Kerzner ties with Discovery, Nickelodeon and MTV in bid for IR

    MUMBAI : Kerzner-CapitaLand in the bid to build Singapore’s second integrated resort has signed exclusive deals with Discovery Channel, Nickelodeon, MTV and Johnson’s.

    Kerzner-CapitaLand is banking on a fully integrated family concept to secure its bid for the Sentosa integrated resort, asserts an official release.

    Kerzner International Holdings president Tobin Prior said, “MTV is the leading music network in Asia and we believe Nickelodeon is the leading youth TV network in Asia. And we believe that they give us very important content to leverage off and very important exposure into those markets.”

    Both MTV and Nickelodeon will establish state-of-the-art interactive television studios within the resort where young visitors can interact with Nick characters and celebrities during live programming.

    Discovery, on the other hand, will run a kids’ camp on marine life – for children aged 3 to 12, while baby-care specialist Johnson’s will provide baby travel kits and professional baby-sitting services for visitors to the resort.Kernzer is also planning to build a hi-tech aquarium on Sentosa, which will include Aqua Labs where visitors can find imaginatively curated collections and futuristic technologies, adds the release.

    There will also be a 300-seat 4D theatre within the aquarium and an Atlantis Lab where students can participate in hands-on experiments.On the retail end, Kerzner highlighted a chocolate and candy factory and an ice-cream station, targeted at young spenders.

    “I think the distinction between us and the others is what we can develop in an integrated fashion that’s going to appeal to families both from a facility point of view and, very importantly, from a programming and operating point of view,” Prior said.

    MTV Australia gives viewers the chance to host shows

    MUMBAI: MTV has announced a first in an attempt to get closer to viewers. In Australia and New Zealand the channel will for the first time in any territory hand over half an hour of air time to its viewers.

    Unlike other on demand type shows the My MTV initiative the broadcaster says will go further than just broadcasting what the viewer wants. It will give the viewer the opportunity to call the shots in their very own 30 minutes.
    Not only do they get to play with the MTV library but they will also get to choose everything from the theme, the content, the look and feel. They get to host a show for half an hour.

    Viewers are invited to register on line at www.mtv.com.au/mymtv and in 50 words or less describe what they would do with their 30 minutes of MTV. Viewers can register for series 1 before 26 November.

    A My MTV Marathon will be featured on 31 December 2006 with the first block to air from 10 am till 3 pm and the second block to follow from 7 pm -12 pm

    Each half hour show will then be shown again separately on My MTV Wednesdays and Saturdays from 3 January 2007 at 5.30 pm.

    MTV notes that viewers can choose what they want to do. It can range from playing back to back to clips of Pimp My Ride to compiling what iones feels are the best and bitchiest moments from Laguna Beach or My Super Sweet 16 or maybe seeing the host of Jackass Johnny Knoxville getting hit in the crown jewels non-stop for 30 minutes.

    MTV ‘Hero Honda Roadies 4’ to kick off on 11 November

    MUMBAI: MTV Hero Honda Roadies 4 is all set to kick off on 11 November at 7 pm. The final 13 MTV Hero Honda Roadies will come together accompanied by host, MTV VJ Rannvijay.

    Each episode will feature the experiences of the final 13 Roadies travelling across almost 8500 kms of sun, snow, rain and physical and mental stress, while complex challenges are thrown at them from every direction. With unexpected turns, twists and vote-outs at every stage, this season promises to be edgier and exhilarating, asserts an official release.

    Traversing the country on seven Hero Honda Karizmas, under challenging conditions with limited budgets and virtual isolation from their friends and family, the adventurers will undertake various tasks that test their endurance, energy and patience as they learn about India’s disparate environs and people.

    After getting through auditions held in Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Kolkata and Mumbai, seven guys and six girls have been chosen who had a penchant for adventure, and with distinctive personalities that set them apart.

    Each episode will have one Roadie voted out. With reel-life villain of Bollywood Gulshan Grover coming in at strategic intervals to make matters worse, backstabbing, flirtations, love affairs, lifelong friendships and betrayals… they’re all in a day’s journey for these young adventurers.

    Viewers will get to see every movement and reaction. The one Roadie who makes it to Gantok will win a cash prize of up to Rs. 5,00,000, adds the release.

    MUMBAI: MTV is all set to launch the second season of Semi Girebaal. Semi Girebaal Returns would premiere on 12 November at 9:30 pm.

    Coming back with a completely different format, the new Semi Girebaal Returns will include a whole lot of new segments. Each episode will come with elements like celebrity chats and confessions – and this time with some real celebrities, shot in Semi’s new White House, asserts an official release.

    Semi is accompanied by her trusted hired help Atmaram, to ride beside her in her white car and also to enter into her mind and dream sequences. This time she is also coming outdoors with trips to the bazaar, charity auctions as well as the houses of celebrities to meet their cooks, cleaners and their pets – all sterilised for her.

    This season will even see Semi launch her own line of beauty products and merchandise on air. She is also giving out advice on matters of the heart, conducting poetry sessions titled semi literate and giving lifestyle tips like the art of crying.

    Season one of Rendezvous with Semi Girebaal received a good response when MTV VJ Cyrus Sahukar donned the avatar of Semi Girebaal and interviewed look-alikes of leading Indian celebrities in his, err… her tender manner, giving audiences mostly bakwaas information about the stars’ lives, loves and controversies.

    MUMBAI: Software major Microsoft has announced agreements with US broadcasters CBS, MTV, film studio Paramount Pictures, Turner Broadcasting System (TBS), Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

    The aim is to to bring an initial lineup of over 1,000 hours of hit TV shows and movies to Xbox 360 gamers in the US by the end of the year.

    Microsoft says that Xbox 360 will be the first gaming console to bring standard and high-definition TV shows and movies via digital distribution over the Internet directly to the American consumer. From 22 November 2006, which marks its first anniversary, Xbox 360 will be the first gaming console in history to provide high-definition TV shows and movies directly to gamers in their living rooms. Xbox 360 gamers will have access to the full-length TV shows as downloads to own and movies to rent via download from the Xbox Live® network, the worldwide leader in online distribution of high-definition gaming and entertainment content. This announcement also brings with it several additional ‘firsts’:

    • For the first time, consumers will get an integrated gaming and entertainment experience on a gaming console that includes downloadable high-definition TV shows and movies. This new full-length content adds to the ever-expanding number of choices gamers have on their Xbox 360, whether they want to play games or play a movie on a disc or as a download in high definition or standard definition.

    • CBS will deliver high-definition download-to-own TV shows including CSI, Jericho, Numb3rs and remastered Star Trek episodes. Gamers can buy them and watch them repeatedly.

    • For the first time on any platform, Nascar.com will deliver download-to-own condensed versions of select Nascar Nextel Cup Series races from Race Rewind.

    • The Ultimate Fighting Championship will make 50 of its most intense fights available for download as well as select episodes from the original season of The Ultimate Fighter reality series.

    Microsoft corporate VP interactive entertainment business Peter Moore says, “This groundbreaking announcement is a win for everyone. It connects our partners with one of the most coveted audiences in entertainment today, and provides even greater value to our Xbox Live community, allowing them to enjoy the games and entertainment they want, when they want it.”

    MTV launches dating-reality show ‘Gehre Pyaar pe Laath’

    MUMBAI: MTV India is no stranger to reality shows. This time round the music network has launched a dating-reality show Gehre Pyaar pe Laath (G.P.L).

    The network has adapted and localised the international format show Dismissed, which aired on MTV Networks International. Launched on 28 October, G.P.L airs at 6:30 pm.

    Each episode of G.P.L opens up with three people i.e. two guys and a girl or vice versa who go out and spend an entire day together. Starting out as a blind date with a twist, wherein addition to meeting the date, the contestants also meet their rivals, informs an official release.

    The mission for the two, in a nutshell, is to destroy the rivals date but ensure that your own date goes smoothly. And as the day unfolds the two guys or the two girls turn on their charm to woo their date. From destinations like amusement parks, arcades and even a sophisticated dinner, the date tests a variety of emotions and bonds. Each episode ends with the wooed choosing just one wooer as his/her final date. For the wooer that wasn’t selected, he/she goes home with a grand G.P.L, states the release.

    MTV India VP GM creative and content Ashish Patil said, “Romance, reality, double the number of people you take on a date… and guaranteed double the fun! With a name as provocative as G.P.L., you know it’s going to be one wicked show that only MTV would dare to air.”

    Former Viacom CEO Freston to receive $84 mn package

    MUMBAI: A little over a month has passed since Tom Freston quit US media conglomerate Viacom. He will receive $84.8 million in severance, accrued salary and restricted stock payments.

    Media reports state that he also reached a deal with Viacom to serve as an advisor to the company for the next three years, for which he will receive an additional $1 million per year, an arrangement he can cancel with two week’s notice.

    As had been reported last month by Indiantelevision.com Redstone’s dumping a loyal lieutenant who built MTV into a global entertainment powerhouse was over Freston’s failure to aggressively chase the social networking site MySpace. News Corp bought MySpace for $ 580 million which has turned out out to be a great price. Redstone was also looking for a more entrepenurial CEO. He probably felt that longtime board member Philippe Dauman and Thomas Dooley would be more suited.

    MUMBAI: US broadcaster MTV has announced a content and advertising alliance with Chinese search engine Baidu.com.

    The new strategic partnership will give China’s 123 million Internet users easy access to 15,000 hours of MTV and Nickelodeon original video content and music videos licensed by five top Chinese and Asian music companies for online viewing or download through www.baidu.com.

    As part of the agreement, MTV will provide the first-ever branded area featured on Baidu – MTV Zone, which will include advertising at launch by Motorola and P&G. This deal extends MTV China’s digital media position, where MTV claims to have 100 per cent reach of the country’s mobile subscribers through partnerships with China Mobile and China Unicom.

    MTV International president Bill Roedy commented, “This breakthrough relationship with Baidu delivers Chinese audiences a major digital platform for non-stop, 24-hour access to MTV and Nickelodeon programming content for the first time – from SpongeBob SquarePants, to Pimp My Ride, to MTV China’s local original programming like MTV Tian Lai Cun and MTV Music Wire. This alliance with China’s number one Internet search engine is also a key milestone in our digital media position in China and advances our long-term commitment to expanding our brands and local content in China.”

    Baidu.com chairman and CEO Robin Li said, “We are excited to expand our powerful online entertainment platform at Baidu through this first-of-its-kind alliance with MTV Networks. With a diverse offering of original programming, animation and music, Chinese users will be able to experience high quality entertainment on MTV Zone. Content owners and artists will be compensated through this revenue share agreement, which also offers exciting new opportunities for advertisers to reach the online youth demographic in China. We look forward to working with MTV Networks to build on this partnership over the long-term.”

    MTV China will provide four categories of content for MTV Zone on Baidu’s portal, including:

    – MTV China’s locally produced shows such as Music Wire, Tian Lai Cun, MTV Chart Countdown, MTV English, MTV Mega Star and live music events.

    – MTV hit reality shows including Pimp My Ride, Cribs and Laguna Beach.

    – Nickelodeon’s shows, including SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer, as well as live action series Unfabulous and Drake and Josh.

    – Music videos from four Chinese labels, as well as one Asian label.

    Content will vary in length, from 10 minutes to 30 minutes. Internet users will be able to access the high-resolution video content via viewing online, as well as downloading using Baidu’s BaiduXsetup software that enables fast downloading. Some downloaded content will require payment, such as music videos, while most will be downloadable free of charge after viewing advertisements. MTVN, Baidu, and where applicable, the record labels, share the revenues.

    MTV and Baidu will also share ad revenues. Motorola and Procter & Gamble’s Rejoice brand have signed on as the first advertisers of MTV Zone downloads. In addition, MTVN has signed licensing agreements with four of the top music companies in Mainland China, including EE Media, Modern Sky, Music Nation and Ocean Butterflies to enable MTVN to distribute music videos for emerging and established artists. These include Jeff Chang, JJ Lin, Aaron Kwok, Wang Rong, New Pants and others. Music video content will also be available from indie label Avex Group, which represents many artists with strong pan-Asian appeal, such as Japan’s Ayumi Hamasaki, Boa, and Namie Amuro; Mainland China’s He Jie; and Taiwan’s Cindy Wang and Show Lo. Additional agreements to offer videos from local and international artists will be announced soon.

    MTV adds that it has many agreements around the world to make its content available on multiple platforms, including the Internet, mobile phones and portable devices. Internet partnerships include companies such as AOL, Google Video, iTunes and Amazon, among others, for MTV, Nickelodeon and the company’s other leading brands.
