    Oscars vote: 20 Indians & NRIs including Big B invited

    NEW DELHI: Actor-producer Aamir Khan is the only producer of an Oscar nominee among around 20 Indians or people of Indian origin including megastar Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra who have been invited to join the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to vote for the Oscars.

    Interestingly, Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are the only father and daughter-in-law in the list of 774 persons invited from 57 countries.

    The total includes some persons – like eminent directors Mrinal Sen and Goutam Ghose – who have figured in more than one category in the total, as director and writer. Priyanka Chopra, Irfan Khan and Deepika Padukone who have also featured in international cinema are also in the list, which includes actor Salman Khan.

    Designers include Arjun Bhasin who designed the costumes of  “Monsoon Wedding” (which was also nominated); the renowned Mrinal Sen; Indian origin designer Geeta Gandbhir whose films include “The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington” and “Music by Prudence”, and award-winning director Anand Patwardhan.

    The list includes visual effects and animation filmmaker Mohit Kallianpur –“Frozen,” “Tangled” and Indian origin filmmaker Mahesh Ramasubramanian – “Home,” “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” in the short feature category.

    The award-winning directors Buddhadeb Das Gupta and Sooni Taraporevala figure in the list of writers of films they directed.

    Others include executive Abhijay Prakash and film curator Rajendra Roy apart from Ujwal Narayan Nirgudkar.

    “We’re proud to invite our newest class to the Academy. The entire motion picture community is what we make of it,” Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Academy President, said in a statement.

    Some eminent international personalities include Fatih Akin, Kim-ki-Duk, Garth Davis, Lav Diaz, Tom Ford, Anna Hui, Takashi Miike, and Guy Ritchie among others.

    DD to air special documentary on film legend Mrinal Sen

    NEW DELHI: Doordarshan will telecast an exclusive documentary on the life of living legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen titled Celebrating Mrinal Sen.

     

    This documentary will be shown in four episodes and is scheduled for telecast on 18, 19, 25 and 26 April at 9 pm on DD National. 

     

    The archival documentary is primarily based on conversations between the maestro and film critic and analyst Sameek Bandyopadhyay. The conversation is interspersed with relevant excerpts from his memorable films and comments from actors and associate crew members, who worked with him in his different projects. 

     

    The last episode is a free flowing conversation between Sen’s only son Kunal and his parents. Almost all the living actors, who have been associated with this iconic director have talked about Sen and their personal experiences of working and interacting with him. 

     

    A DVD of this documentary was handed over recently to Sen and his wife Gita Sen by Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar.

     

    It will later be telecast across other national and regional channels of Doordarshan like DD Bangla, DD Bharati etc, with dubbing and subtitling. 

     

    Born on 14 May, 1923 and now aged 91, Sen is often considered to be one of the greatest ambassadors of Indian parallel cinema on the global stage. Along with Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak, his cinema is known for its artistic depiction of social reality and the three directors were responsible for starting a wave of parallel art cinema in West Bengal.

    Mrinal Sen’s next is a sci-fi comedy

    MUMBAI: Veteran filmmaker Mrinal Sen, who turned 90 recently, will don the director‘s hat once again.

    The director, who gave us films like Neel Akasher Neechey, Bhuvan Shome, Khandhar, Bhuvan Shome, Kolkata Trilogy and Aakaler Sandhane, has reportedly approached Naseeruddin Shah and Soumitra Chatterjee to star in his next yet untitled film, a sci-fi comedy.

    While Shah’s dialogues will be in English and Hindi, that of Chatterjee will be in English and Bengali.

    Interestingly, three of Sen’s films — Bhuvan Shome, Kolkata Trilogy and Akaler Sandhane — are to be restored by Martin Scorsese’s film restoration outfit, The Film Foundation.

    Art director Samir Chanda no more

    MUMBAI: This week, Bollywood has been plagued with deaths. First, it was Shammi Kapoor; then it was the death of yesteryear art director Shanti Das. Now come the news that the country’s topmost art director Samir Chanda has passed away. He was 54.


    In his 32-year career, Chanda had annexed the National Film Award for best Art Direction thrice. Among the notable films that Chanda was associated with were Kharij, Aks, Raavan, Bose The Forgotten Hero, Guru, Rang De Basanti, Kaalpurush, Krishna, Omkara, Saat Khoon Maaf and Yatra among others.


    Chanda had also worked in Bengali films like Kaalbela, Kalpurush and Moner Manush besides directing Mithun Chakraborty in Ek Nadir Galpo (Tale of a River).


    Starting with TV serials, Chanda gained popularity in filmdom with him being close to filmmakers like Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal, Vishal Bharadwaj and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.


    A trained painter from Calcutta Art College, Chanda‘s vast training and understanding of Indian art and architecture ranged from the recreation of sets from the 10th Century to the modern contemporary world.
