Directed by Academy Award-winner Morgan Neville, the film charts McCartney’s creative rebirth alongside his wife Linda, as the two form Wings and redefine what it means to start again under the glare of fame. Packed with never-before-seen footage and rare archival treasures, the documentary offers an intimate glimpse at the man behind the music, facing both artistic challenges and personal triumphs.

But that’s not all, the film headlines a larger partnership between McCartney, Universal Music Group, and Amazon, set to roll out over the coming year. Fans can look forward to exclusive music releases, limited-edition merchandise drops, and even McCartney’s own commentary on Amazon Music.

The collaboration also coincides with the November release of Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run, his companion book, and Wings, a self-titled definitive music collection arriving on vinyl and streaming platforms. Add to that his upcoming Got Back tour across North America, and it’s clear Sir Paul’s still flying high.

  • India’s Competition Commission Investigates Google’s Real-Money Gaming Policies

India’s Competition Commission Investigates Google’s Real-Money Gaming Policies

With the Competition Commission of India (CCI) launching an investigation into Google’s restrictive policies on real-money gaming (RMG) applications, India’s digital gaming industry is witnessing a regulatory showdown. The incident came to light when a leading Indian gaming platform, WinZO, accused Google of discriminatory policies favoring a few gaming apps while excluding others.

These developments have added to the regulatory challenges Google has faced in India. Earlier, the company was penalized for abusing its dominance in the Android ecosystem by enforcing restrictive policies that favored its own services over competitors.

. In 2022, the European Commission fined Google €4.34 billion ($5 billion) for favoring its search engine and Play Store ecosystem.

. In 2021, South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission fined Google $177 million for anti-competitive Play Store policies.

All About Google’s Gaming App Policy and WinZO’s Complaint

The controversy traces its roots to 2022 when Google revised its gaming app policy and permitted a few RMG apps, mainly fantasy sports and rummy, on its Play Store. However, WinZO’s app, which offers a wide range of games like carrom, puzzles, and racing, was excluded. As a result, the company argued how Google’s selective acceptance has generated a two-tier system that favors some developers while disapproving others.

As per the CCI order, “By granting preferential treatment to select app categories, Google effectively creates a two-tier market where some developers are accorded superior access and visibility while others are discriminated against and thus, left with a competitive disadvantage.” The regulator also stated that Google may have violated Sections 4(2)(a)(i), 4(2)(b), and 4(2)(c) of India’s Competition Act and a detailed investigation was required to look through the issue.

Moreover, WinZO went on to criticize Google for what it calls an “unreasonable and restrictive” approach due to which developers are forced to distribute their apps outside the Play Store through direct downloads via the sideloading method. The company further alleged that when users attempt to make payments, Google begins flagging the platform as risky, thereby warding off potential players.

    Regulatory and Market Implications

India’s online gaming industry is at a critical juncture as regulatory uncertainty has clouded its rapid expansion. Despite the Indian government actively working on new regulations introduced in 2023 and 2024, challenges remain.

. India’s gaming market is projected to grow from $3.7 billion in FY24 to $9.8 billion by FY29, reflecting a 20% CAGR, according to a 1Lattice report.

The introduction of 28% GST on gaming transactions in 2023 has added further strain to the industry, significantly impacting revenue streams for major gaming firms.

. Reports indicate that leading gaming companies like Dream11 and MPL have experienced revenue declines of 20-30% in FY24-25, driven by the increased tax burden

With both taxation and Google’s restrictions in play, many RMG platforms now struggle to scale their operations in India, leading to slower innovation, investor uncertainty, and a shift toward offshore markets.

    Case Study of Alternative Strategies

As regulatory and platform restrictions tighten, many emerging gaming platforms are adopting alternative distribution strategies to circumvent Google Play’s limitations. Brands like Parimatch and other web-based new casinos bypass these restrictions by offering direct APK downloads while leveraging influencer marketing on platforms like Telegram and YouTube to engage Indian players effectively.

Following this approach helps gaming companies to maintain user engagement without relying on Google’s ecosystem. These methods involve distributing APK files directly through their websites, which allows them to avoid Play Store commissions and restrictions on payment processing. Additionally, they can also seek influencer-driven marketing that helps build trust and visibility in a market where digital word-of-mouth plays a crucial role.
Another emerging trend is the development of web-based gaming platforms. Here, games run directly in browsers without requiring a Play Store listing, providing a seamless user experience while bypassing App Store policies altogether.

Next Steps to Watch for in the Investigation

If the CCI enforces regulatory action against Google, it could reshape India’s digital gaming landscape with fair competition and greater accessibility for gaming platforms. Meanwhile, the industry’s swift adaptation to alternative distribution strategies signals that Indian gaming firms are ready to challenge the status quo-whether through legal battles or innovative market approaches.

Simultaneously, we see several gaming platforms already adapting to the situation by utilizing alternative distribution models, exploiting influencer networks, and investing in direct user acquisition strategies.

Prime Video announces immersive & localised cricket experience for Ind vs. NZ series from 18 Nov

Mumbai: Streaming service, Prime Video, amps up the excitement around the Indian cricket team’s tour of New Zealand beginning 18 November, with a series of announcements. In a first for Prime Video India, the service will show advertisements during live cricket matches. It has signed up Airtel Xstream Fiber as the presenting sponsor, and MPL, Nescafé, Noise, OLX Autos, and Vida have come on board as associate sponsors. Meanwhile, brands including AMFI and DBS join as advertisers.

This move will help brands reach Prime Video’s premium base of highly engaged customers spread across the country.

India and New Zealand both reached the semi-finals of the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia but lost their matches. They will now play a limited-overs series consisting of three T20s and three ODIs between 18 and 30 November. Prime Video is the official India territory rights holder to exclusively stream all men’s and women’s cricket matches played in New Zealand.

Prime Video India director of SVoD business Sushant Sreeram said, “There are many things that are heterogeneous about the delightfully diverse India when it comes to entertainment—be it choice of language, genres of shows and movies, devices that customers prefer watching their favourite entertainment on, and so much more. But there is one absolute unifier that everyone across the country is unanimously passionate about, and that’s cricket! With our slate of compelling shows and movies over the last six years, we have strived to super-serve our customers, and they have emphatically picked Prime Video as their most loved entertainment destination. Now, with live cricket made immersive and accessible through multi-language feeds, fantastic studio programming, and a superb set of commentators to guide us through the series, we are confident that we will not only deliver a superior experience for the country’s legions of cricket fans, but also make Prime Video the first choice of entertainment for everyone.”

“India and New Zealand have both been at the top of their white ball games in the recent past, and we expect some explosive cricket in the coming weeks from two of the best teams in the world as the cricketing action now moves from Australia to New Zealand,” he added.

Prime Video will deliver live commentary and match-programming in English, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu. Fans will also be treated to graphics in these languages. Former captains and cricketers like Ravi Shastri, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Gundappa Viswanath, Anjum Chopra, and Venkatpathy Raju, among others, will be bringing the matches alive with their insightful commentary in different languages as India tries to set the record straight against New Zealand. The BlackCaps knocked the Men in Blue out of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup and also defeated India in the inaugural World Test Championship final in 2021.

The full slate of commentators for the series includes the following names:

English: Ravi Shastri, Harsha Bhogle, Anjum Chopra, Simon Doull, and Murali Kartik. Gaurav Kapoor will be the presenter.

Hindi: Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Ajay Jadeja, Mohammad Kaif, and Ajit Agarkar.

Tamil: WV Raman, Hemang Badani, L Sivaramakrishnan, and S Sriram.

Kannada: Gundappa Viswanath, Veda Krishnamurthy, Shankar Prakash, Venkatesh Prasad, and K Jeshwant.

Telugu: Venkatpathy Raju, Sunitha Anand, Sudhir Malwvedi, and Vijay Malwvedi.

The cricket experience for the fans doesn’t stop here. Prime Video will also offer an English-language live one-hour pre-show before each game. The mid-innings break will feature a 15-minute show that will be a recap of the first inning and a preview of the second. The live programming also involves a 30-minute post-match presentation and analysis by Prime Video’s stable of cricket experts.

Curating a new viewing experience for live sports, Prime Video will offer customers new features like an in-game language selector and “Rapid Recap.” The in-game language selector will allow customers to change languages (e.g., from English to Hindi) seamlessly without exiting the player. Customers joining a game in progress can catch-up on impactful game highlights using the “Rapid Recap” feature before transitioning to the live stream automatically.

To watch the matches, consumers can go to the Prime Video app on their respective devices, where they will be able to find the live match featured on the home page. On Android and Smart TV devices, they can select the Cricket tab in the top navigation. The Cricket section’s landing page will include live matches as well as full replays of previous matches. Consumers can choose a language stream of their choice to enjoy the match. The page will also feature the key highlights of the matches—Super Sixes and short highlights—for a quick catch-up. • MPL announces Bug Bounty programme; aims to bolster the player-first approach to enhance user security

MPL announces Bug Bounty programme; aims to bolster the player-first approach to enhance user security

Mumbai: Mobile and skill gaming platform MPL has launched a Bug Bounty programme with the aim of strengthening the security of the users and continuing to provide a safe and fair gameplay environment. The programme will reward security researchers with up to Rs 10 lakhs for successfully identifying a valid vulnerability on MPL. This is open to researchers globally, and reports that address valid security vulnerabilities that are within the scope of the programme will be eligible for the rewards and recognition.

With the Bug Bounty programme, MPL will not just focus on identifying security vulnerabilities but will also make targeted efforts to devise a timely resolution to tackle them.

This initiative is aligned to the company’s player-first approach that considers the safety and security of the users as its topmost priority.

Interestingly, the MPL Bug Bounty programme does not restrict its scope to just identifying security loopholes but also allows researchers to report any possibility of fraud that could give a player an unfair advantage. The programme encourages reports on instances that can enable a player to compromise with the gameplay or the outcomes, like winning a game without playing, altering the gameplay, or even posting outrageous scores. Along with this, reporting of any vulnerability that can target the users on the platform, like taking over user accounts or dumping user data, also falls within the scope of the program.

MPL VP of security and compliance Ruchir Patwa said, “At MPL we are always committed to the player-first approach and the Bug Bounty programme has been launched to continue our efforts towards enhancing the user security and safe playing experience on our platform. With this, we also intend to reward and recognise some of the good samaritans of the gaming fraternity. We look forward to some great collaborations with researchers across the globe and will continue to create the best gaming experiences for all our users.”

MPL will also recognise the contributions of the researchers who have submitted the most insightful reports by featuring them in the Bug Bounty Hall of Fame page.

  • MPL launches #SaveOurMissingGirls campaign, teams up with Missing Link Trust for a role play game

MPL launches #SaveOurMissingGirls campaign, teams up with Missing Link Trust for a role play game

Mumbai: Mobile and skill gaming platform (MPL), in collaboration with Missing Link Trust, has launched a campaign called #SaveOurMissingGirls to raise awareness about human trafficking. The campaign was announced on the eve of the United Nations’ World Day against Trafficking in persons. It aims to spread awareness of the dark world of human trafficking through a role-playing game.

As a part of this week-long campaign starting on 30 July, MPL has invited people to take a pledge by giving a missed call to the number 9099306000 and show their support towards ending this menace that impacts millions of lives every year.

Human trafficking is the second largest organised crime in the world and the numbers are alarmingly increasing across the world and in India. According to a Dasra report, nearly 1827 women are trafficked every hour on an average in India, resulting in almost 16 million women being victims of sex trafficking every year. 40 per cent of these victims are adolescents and children.

The UN’s theme this year for World Day Against Human Trafficking is ‘use and abuse of technology’ in human trafficking, and MPL has chosen gamification as the technology-led path to sensitise the general public and potential victims about human trafficking and ways to prevent it.

Missing, developed by Missing Link Trust, an NGO which combines art and technology to create mass awareness around sex trafficking, was onboarded on MPL recently. The interactive game, wherein the gamer assumes the role of a trafficked girl in India, is designed to allow players to experience what a missing person goes through when she is trafficked into the inhumane and cruel world of prostitution, a world into which millions of girls are lost every year. Gamers have to make smart choices at each step of the game to be able to get out of the trap set by traffickers.

MPL country head for India Namratha Swamy said, “Technology has a big role to play in the prevention of human trafficking, and we believe online gaming can be an interesting way to sensitise people and raise awareness about eradicating human trafficking. One of the key objectives of the #SaveOurMissingGirls campaign is to use games to make more people alert. We have received an overwhelming response from MPL’s users to Missing ever since its launch on our platform.”

“The Missing game comes under the genre of ‘Games for Change’ by tackling the first ‘P for Prevention’ of the United Nation’s four Ps against trafficking. We think this campaign, along with our collaboration with the MPL platform, with a strong 90 million, will be a game-changer in ensuring a wide reach for the game and making millions of people aware of the menace,” said Missing Link Trust founder Leena Kejriwal.

Several celebrities and influencers such as Durjoy Datta, Ravinder Singh, and Trendulkar have extended their support to the campaign by joining the conversation on social media. NGOs like CyberPeace Foundation, Impulse, and Digital Empowerment Foundation, among others, also supported the initiative to show their solidarity towards the cause.

  • Why startups facing strong headwinds with massive layoffs

Why startups facing strong headwinds with massive layoffs

MUMBAI: Social commerce startup CityMall became the latest startup to announce mass lay-offs. In a LinkedIn post on 19 June, the firm said that it has laid off 191 employees alluding to the current funding environment and a change in its business model as reasons. In addition, SoftBank-backed Unacademy laid off another 150 employees last week, after letting go of around 600 employees or 10 percent of its workforce in the beginning of this year. Around the same time, Coinbase sacked about 8 percent of its India workforce, amid a crash in digital assets. While crypto companies have taken a hit in 2022 because of uncertainties revolving around their legal validity in India, they aren’t the only ones to feel the chills of a market meltdown.

Several Indian startups seem to be on a lay-off spree currently, after the hiring augmented for a brief period, leading to thousands of workers staring at an uncertain future amid heightened inflation & economic downturn, thereby, adversely impacting startups in the recent months. Startups that issued pink slips this year included unicorns such as Vedantu (laid off 642 employees in May), Cars24 (laid off 600 in May), Ola (laid off 1,200 earlier this year), Meesho (laid off 150 in April), MPL (laid off 100 in May), Trell (laid off 300 in March) and Unacademy (laid off 750 over the last few months).

So far, over 10,000 employees have been laid off by 24 startups, based on media reports. The new-age sectors which have witnessed the maximum layoffs are edtech and ecommerce. Just a year back, several of these new companies were hiring robustly, offering ambitious pay packages, having raised intense funding, and expanding vigorously.

Furthermore, Indian startups were the largest spenders during the IPL season, even leaving the heavyweight FMCG brands far behind in its ad spends. It is noteworthy that all the official sponsors of IPL this season comprised only startups. These majorly included fintechs and edtechs, such as Unacademy, Upstox, RuPay, and CRED, apart from Swiggy Instamart & Dream11, with each official sponsor shelling out excessive moolah.

Gaming platform Mobile Premier League (MPL) was the official kit sponsor for the Indian Cricket Team while edtech brand, Unacademy was the official partner of IPL 2022 and sponsor of Kolkata Knight Riders team. E-comm brand Meesho was the sponsor of IPL’s official broadcaster Star Sports and the Gujarat & Rajasthan teams.

What kind of challenges the Great Indian Startup is facing? Is the party finally over for startups? What is the current market scenario? Will startups recover and increase hiring in future? We spoke to the experts to understand the current situation of the market and future growth?

According to Talent acquisition marketplace, FlexC founder and CEO Girish Kukreja said that most of the startups witnessed a sharp surge in demand for their products and services, when Covid was at its peak. “The market trend then showed a very bright upward growth. It multiplied the demand for human power to cater to the needs of current users and attract more consumers to the business. But most of these employees were hired probably in haste, with little to no solid plans for managing the growth and succession planning of these employees within the organisation.”

However, when things moved to the pre-pandemic world, so did consumer’s behaviour also changed in many aspects. It, therefore, resulted in a setback for these firms. Hence, the layoffs happened, Kukreja believes.

After a funding blitzkrieg that lasted for nearly two years, venture capital investments globally have gone down as technology valuations have taken a hit in 2022 in the post-pandemic economic situation, coupled with inflation and international unrest. As the startup ecosystem braces for a funding winter and subsequent slowdown, it is increasingly becoming clear that most of the players in the space hired too many & too soon.

Despite that, Kukreja does not believe that it’s all over for ‘the great Indian startup party’. “In terms of overall startup employment, the current layoff numbers reported are a minor percentage- possibly five to ten per cent,” he states, adding, “Making mistakes and learning along the way is a part of every startup’s journey. The only mistake these startups made at that point was to hire many permanent employees.”

The startup culture in India is pretty resilient and it will adapt & get back on track in no time, he says, citing the example of an edtech startup called Physics Wala that entered the unicorn club amid the layoffs.

Some of these online-first edtech startups, such as BYJU’S and Unacademy are also reinventing themselves by moving to a hybrid model, with plans to open offline coaching centres, blending their online and offline teaching models.

Several others have also resorted to curtailing expansion plans by closing down non-core verticals, moderating marketing and advertising spends, while going on a hiring freeze to tide over the bleak phase.

Grapes CEO & cofounder Shradha Agarwal attributes the “mass layoffs” phenomenon against the startups experiencing a funding peak in 2021 to “the unplanned hiring spree in the rush to onboard talents”.

“To achieve immediate results, startups experiment with new approaches that often misguide the management to formulate inadequate growth analysis. As a result, they expand into new growth plans and venture into new verticals which fails due to an unrealistic approach,” she says. This puts a lot of pressure on the workforce, and companies resort to cutting down on human resources as the only viable solution owing to its easily controllable factor compared to the other fixed costs, which are beyond their hands, Agarwal adds.

Despite the glitch in the framework, the startup culture is there to stay given its business nature, Agarwal believes. “The industry is versatile where it has the ability to change and mould its business models according to the market conditions.” The startups must focus on proper recruitment strategies with specific skills hiring for longer sustainability, rather than being concerned about short-term goals, she states.

Staffing solutions provider, Gi Group Holding India country manager Sonal Arora  does not see the layoffs being witnessed in recent times as necessarily being a sign of troubled times ahead for the Indian start-ups ecosystem. “Some of these start-up companies across various industries are in a process of consolidating their workforce. It is a strategic step that every organisation aiming to expand adopts,” she states. “In some cases, they have matured in terms of their business model and decided which are the products/ services they want to focus on, which will eventually result in better or improved services.”

Experts highlight that layoffs are not a new phenomenon and have always been a part of various industries, considering that the layoffs are happening at a large scale around the same time in several startups is what has garnered a lot of attention.

According to Arora, India continues to be the centre of emerging technologies. “This means that in the future we will continue to attract various series of funding and interest from venture capitalists,” she concludes.
