PepsiCo’s India ambitions: fizzing with growth potential

MUMBAI: In the sweltering heat of India’s bustling metropolises, where street vendors hawk their wares amid a cacophony of honking horns and animated chatter, PepsiCo has spotted an oasis of opportunity. The beverage and snack behemoth aims to double its revenue in this vibrant South Asian nation over the next five years, viewing India as a critical “key anchor market” where it’s pouring investments like a perfectly fizzy drink into a chilled glass.

PepsiCo India & South Asia CEO Jagrut Kotecha,  with eyes sparkling like carbonated bubbles rising to the surface, revealed that India will serve as the “engine of growth” for PepsiCo’s global revenue ambitions. Standing tall among the company’s top three markets globally, India’s performance has been anything but flat, serving up double-digit growth that’s as refreshing as a cold sip on a blistering summer day.

Lays“We believe India will be the engine of growth for PepsiCo to drive the top line,” Kotecha explained, gesturing expressively during an exclusive interview with PTI. “Our per capita consumption in India is still very low, not only for beverages and food, but we would expect one of PepsiCo’s fastest-growing economies to change that,” he added, his optimism as effervescent as a freshly opened bottle of cola.

The company hasn’t been crisping about when it comes to investments. PepsiCo has already established greenfield plants in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, where golden wheat fields stretch to the horizon, and is preparing to pop open a new facility in Assam, nestled among lush tea plantations in India’s verdant northeast, by year’s end.

“We are not going to be investment shy,” Kotecha declared, with the confidence of someone holding the winning hand in a high-stakes game. “We’re going to be investing forward to drive that growth because it’s there for us to capture.”

    Pepsi Beverages

The numbers tell a tasty tale: PepsiCo has poured close to Rs 3,500-4,000 crore into the Indian market over the past three years—an investment as substantial as a fully loaded potato crisp.

The American giant has crafted a strategy as carefully layered as a perfectly constructed sandwich. It has divided the kaleidoscopic Indian market into nine distinct clusters based on taste preferences, demonstrating an understanding that India’s palate is as diverse as its colourful festivals and traditions.

PepsiCo operates through instantly recognisable brands that have become as familiar to Indians as the sight of cricket matches in neighbourhood parks—Kurkure with its distinctive crunch, Lay’s with its perfect crisp, thoughtful Quaker, and zesty Doritos dominate its food segment, which contributed a hearty 80 per cent to PepsiCo India’s revenue in 2023.

The remaining 20 per cent bubbled up from beverages, a segment handled by bottling partner Varun Beverages Ltd (VBL), which operates a network of 41 plants scattered across the country like stars in the night sky. VBL isn’t sipping slowly either—they’ve increased capacity by a quarter this year alone.

    Kurkure

Its beverages brand include carbonated fare such as  Mountain Dew, 7up, Pepsi, and energy drink Sting and sports beverages Gatorade, while in juices it has Tropicana and Slice brands .PepsiCo operates with Kurkure, Lays, Quaker and Doritos in the snacks category.

When questioned about new competitor Reliance’s Campa Cola, which has been creating ripples in the market with aggressive pricing and distributor margins, Kotecha maintained the composed demeanour of a drink that hasn’t lost its fizz.

“It’s always good to have competition. Competition only helps to grow the category,” he remarked with the wisdom of a seasoned market player. “Even before Pepsi and Coke were there, there were a lot of local, regional players. Now Campa has also come with a lot of flair and expense. So our belief is the category will then grow and consumption will grow.”

This optimistic outlook comes even as India’s per capita consumption remains “far less” than neighbouring Pakistan—a fact that doesn’t seem to dilute Kotecha’s enthusiasm.

The vision for PepsiCo India is as clear as a glass of Mountain Dew: to achieve $2 billion (around Rs 17,000 crore) in revenue in the coming years. Having reported over Rs 5,950 crore in 2023 (for nine months due to a change in fiscal year), and maintaining double-digit growth since then, PepsiCo appears to be on a trajectory as steady as a perfectly balanced can of soda.

As the sun sets over the vast Indian landscape, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, PepsiCo continues to bet big on a country where every street corner could potentially house a new consumer ready to reach for a cold drink or a packet of crisps. In this land of a billion dreams, PepsiCo is hoping its growth story will be nothing short of effervescent.

Jubilant FoodWorks signs MoU with Coca-Cola India for its sparkling beverages

MUMBAI: Just a couple of  weeks after the Jubilant Bhartia group said that it would be taking a 40 per cent stake in Hindustan Coca-Cola Holdings (the parent company of the largest Coca-Cola bottler in India),  it announced that its offshoot Jubilant Foodworks Ltd (JFL)  has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Coca-Cola India to procure its  sparkling beverages for its fast-food outlets.

JFL  operates five brands – three of them are under master franchise  agreements from three global players —Domino’s, Popeyes, and Dunkin’—and two are proprietary brands Hong’s Kitchen, an Indo-Chinese QSR  brand in India and a café brand Coffy in Turkey. The group has 3,130 outlets in six markets including India, Turkey, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan and Georgia with India accounting for 2,199 of them as of 30 September.

Until now, Coke rival PepsiCo was the beverage partner of Domino’s in India following  an agreement in 2018. As part of that, PepsiCo’s  carbonated beverages such as Pepsi, Mountain Dew, 7Up, and Mirinda along with Lipton Ice Tea are served to customers. India is the largest market outside of the US for Dominos.

The Coca-Cola Co India’s brands include Coca-Cola, Thums Up, Sprite, Minute Maid, Maaza, SmartWater, Kinley, Limca, and Fanta.

JFL made a regulatory filing with the Bombay stock exchange informing it of the MoU on 26 December. It further stated that “MoU between Coca-Cola India and JFL contains the principal terms and conditions for purchase of a portfolio of sparkling beverage products and certain other products from The Coca-Cola Co authorised bottlers and for conducting marketing activities (which will be undertaken in the usual/ordinary course) for the said products, as defined in the MoU in relation to various brands of JFL (franchised/owned brands) and products purchased by JFL from The Coca-Cola Co authorised bottlers. A master agreement will be executed between the parties based on the principal terms and conditions mentioned in the MoU on 1 April 2025.  After execution of the master agreement, The Coca-Cola Company authorized bottlers will become suppliers of sparkling beverages and other products as set out in the MoU to JFL. Mountain Dew’s launches summer campaign with Hrithik Roshan

Staying true to Mountain Dew’s original style, the film is filled with thrilling stunts and lots of adrenaline making it an enjoyable watch.

The film opens with a massive tornado tearing through a township, and at a distance there a group of friends relaxing at a campsite unaware of the approaching tornado. Until one of them i.e., Hrithik Roshan, spots the fast-approaching tornado and his friend trapped under a car. In that moment of fear, the decision is between bracing the Tornado to save a friend or making a u-turn. The brand has always acknowledged that fear is inevitable, it creates resistance, but it is courage that enables a single step ahead taking us to the point of ‘liberation’ or ‘victory’. So far, we have celebrated this as a personal triumph but for the first time Mountain Dew through this new summer campaign has brought a ‘purposeful courage’ narrative to the forefront. A story about overcoming fear to save someone else it is. When you have a tagline like ‘Darr ke Aage Jeet Hai’ and a brand ambassador like ‘Hrithik’ they are so synonymous with the brand that you don’t have to look to far to find meaning.”

  • Mountain Dew encourages people to be courageous in new TVC

Mountain Dew encourages people to be courageous in new TVC

MUMBAI: Mountain Dew brand has always focused on facing one’s fears to achieve exemplary results. Targeted at the youth of India, the beverage brand has unveiled a new campaign that encourages consumers to move beyond their fears and stand victorious in the race of life.

The new TVC delves into the daily struggles of people across the spectrum – bringing out that each person reacts differently to circumstances and that fear is subjective with no definite scale, measure, or boundary. The film is a reverberation of Mountain Dew’s belief that in case of a challenge, there are only two choices one can make – either give in to fear and turn back or overcome fear and move ahead with courage. It is the choice that one makes that sets the real heroes apart from the rest.

The film brings together situations and scenarios from the lives of different people in the form of a montage – a boy facing the microphone in front of an audience, a boxer in the boxing ring, a biker at the edge of a cliff, a girl standing at the edge of a diving board, a boy frozen in his steps to paraglide and a girl sending a text to break up with her partner – all these people are hesitating to take their challenges head-on. In comes Mountain Dew – with one sip of the drink, metaphorically, these moments of hesitation and fear are dissolved as the characters take the plunge with faith and courage to face their fears.

PepsiCo India category director Mountain Dew Vineet Sharma said, “With our ‘Darr Ke Aage Jeet Hai’ philosophy, Mountain Dew has always celebrated the spirit of those who push themselves forward in the face of fear to achieve extraordinary results. The brand acknowledges that fear is universal, and every individual is beset with the feeling of fear. Fear can arise from a myriad of situations that are unique to each one of us and in this film, we have tried to focus on everyday fears that many of us can relate to. We believe that real heroes are those that face the challenge head-on and eventually emerge as winners. We are confident consumers across the country will relate to this touching new film and as always, the philosophy of ‘Darr Ke Aage Jeet Hai’ will resonate strongly with them.”

Flibbr Consulting managing partner Rahul Jauhari stated, “Speaking of everyday fears yet keeping the ethos, energy and adrenaline rush of the brand was a fine line one had to tread and I’m glad we could deliver on the brief. We are confident that this TVC will help in connecting to a wider audience at a deeper level.”

The new Mountain Dew campaign and TVC will be amplified across TV, digital, outdoor, and social media with a 360-degree campaign. The beverage is available in single/multi-serve packs across modern and traditional retail outlets as well as on leading e-commerce platforms.

In the words of the Gerrari Offroaders themselves, when they’re seen as the underdogs, what they may lack in resources, they make up for in jigar. In the moment of choice, it’s that jigar that makes the difference between Naam and Namumkin.

Wunderman Thompson creative chief Senthil Kumar notes, “Mountain Dew brings authentic and inspiring stories of real heroes using the popular cinematic biopic storytelling format. This time Hrithik Roshan shares the story of India’s first 4×4 world champions. Set amidst rainforest landscape this shoot was an adventure like no other. • eSports viewers to cross 800 mn globally by ’22; India’s share minor

eSports viewers to cross 800 mn globally by ’22; India’s share minor

MUMBAI: In a new research, the UK-based Juniper Research has forecasted that unique viewers of eSports (competitive playing of video games) and Let’s Plays content (tutorials and talk-throughs of game content) will reach 858 million by 2022, up from 630 million this year with the Indian sub-continent too being a minority contributor.

The largest driver and most significant revenue source of the eSports industry has been the use of advertising and sponsorship deals.

Juniper said that advertising spend will dominate in terms of revenues and spend (accounting for 50 per cent in 2022), with this currently the preferred monetisation strategy. As more non-endemic advertisers come on board, this will only strengthen with a greater number of brands seeking to take advantage of a rapidly growing audience, the report explained.

The unique viewers forcast has been split by eight key regions, which include North America, Latin America, West Europe, Central and East Europe, Far East and China, the Indian sub-continent, Rest of Asia Pacific and Africa & Middle east. The region which contributes the biggest is Far East and China.

Juniper Research provides research and analytical services to the global hi-tech communications sector, providing consultancy, analyst reports and industry commentary.

The report highlighted that instead of having sponsorships from more traditional players in the market such as NVIDIA, the past year has seen increased prevalence of non-endemic advertisers, including brands such as Lynx, Gazprom, Visa, Xfinity, T-Mobile, Taco Bell and Mountain Dew. Juniper believed that this has grown purely due to the audience size and scale seen at major tournaments.

“While some brands show links to traditional gaming culture, i.e food and drink brands, others are more commonly associated with traditional sports sponsorship, ie Gazprom, and their branching into eSports shows belief that this will also become a major sporting industry,” the report stated, adding, “The issue is that eSports has been a volatile industry for a number of years, having previously had periods of growth and interest. In the mid 2000s, for example, where hype spiked, before furore around the market died down, only to be rejuvenated from 2010 onwards.”

    public://pie.jpg

Meanwhile, eSports arrived in the Indian sub-continent later than other western countries and also regions in Asia like China. However, it has been announced as a medal event in 2022 Asian Games, which is a testimony to its rapid growth in this part of the world.

Indiantelevision.com’s research shows that U Cypher promoted the first multi-gaming platform on TV for eSports competitions in India. It comes under U Sport, which is founded by media tycoon-turned-angel-investor Ronnie Screwvala and his partner Supratik Sen.

U Cypher’s ambition is to present a platform to talented gamers that helps them achieve their maximum potential as well as shape their careers in e-Sports leagues.

When Indiantelevision.com spoke to eSports experts in India, one of them said, “The combined eSports and gaming market is estimated to be Rs 3,900 crore with more than 2,000 teams consistently participating in tournaments across India and abroad with over 500 million players worldwide. The industry has a number of major tournaments throughout the year with viewership in the tens of millions.”

We are very thankful for our partnership with The Times of India, led by Times Bridge. Together, we have architected as ambitious a launch as Vice has put together anywhere in the world.”

The Times Group investment arm Times Bridge CEO Rishi Jaitly, highlights that Vice India is poised to delight millennial and GenZ audiences across the country from day one. Says he: “The stories and experiences produced by Vice India will engage youth culture here in a manner not previously seen. We’re proud of our team and look forward to a breakthrough 2018.”

For Vice globally, one of the big changes that happened earlier this month was the elevation of Shane Smith as executive chairman from CEO and the stepping in of former A+E Networks CEO Nancy Dubuc as his replacement. A&E was one of the earliest investors in Smith’s vision for Vice.  Smith was kicked upstairs to focus on content creation and forging strategic deals and partnerships to grow the company.
