Netflix bets big on Bharat: Ted Sarandos touts $2bn impact, calls India the next Korea

MUMBAI:  “Don’t globalise it. Localise it, then watch it fly.” That was Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos’ mantra to Indian creators at the government of India’s Waves  Global Summit 2025, where he shared the stage with actor Saif Ali Khan in a high-wattage fireside chat titled Streaming the New India: Culture, Connectivity & Creative Capital.

Sarandos came bearing stats—and swagger. Netflix’s investments in India from 2021 to 2024, he revealed, have generated over $2 billion in economic impact, filming across 23 states and 100+ cities, and collaborating with over 25,000 local cast and crew. “That’s not just entertainment—it’s employment, infrastructure, and skill-building,” he said.

And the viewership numbers? Eye-watering. In 2024 alone, three billion+ hours of Indian content were streamed globally on Netflix—nearly 60 million hours a week. An Indian title made it to the global Top 10 non-English list every single week of the year.

Saif Ali Khan, now a veteran of both big screens and binge-worthy epics, waxed lyrical about the creative freedoms offered by streaming. “It’s a gift,” he said. “Long-form storytelling lets you explore characters with nuance and intimacy. Streaming is a creative playground—with no school bell ringing at the end.”

When asked how Indian creators can crack global markets, Sarandos dropped the algorithmic truth: “If you try to engineer something for the world, you end up making it for no one,” he warned. “The most successful global stories—Korea’s Squid Game, Spain’s Money Heist—were deeply local. India must do the same. If it’s not loved here, it won’t work out there.”

He didn’t mince words. “Don’t water it down for the west. Audiences don’t want diluted. They want real.”

According to Sarandos, India is teetering on the edge of a Squid Game-scale global breakout. “Korea had years of storytelling before its global moment,” he said. “India is now at that inflection point. The creative base is solid. The reach is already here.”

Netflix is doubling down on that bet, with buzzy upcoming titles like The Royals and The B*****s of Bollywood joining global juggernauts like Squid Game S2, Stranger Things, and Wednesday.

When asked if streaming would cannibalise cinemas, Sarandos played diplomat. “India is fan-first,” he said. “Theatres and streaming aren’t rivals—they’re tag-team partners.” Streaming, he added, simply meets audiences where they are. “In India, films move from theatre to streaming at record speed. That’s not disruption—that’s democratisation. India, in many ways, was ahead of the curve.”

  • Monk Entertainment executes ‘Money Heist’ with latest campaign for Scaler Academy

Monk Entertainment executes ‘Money Heist’ with latest campaign for Scaler Academy

Mumbai: With the buzz surrounding the release of the latest season of Netflix series – “Money Heist,” Monk Entertainment has come out with a moment marketing campaign titled ‘If Indian engineers did a heist’ for ed-tech company Scaler Academy. The campaign does a comic local spinoff of the popular series in order to highlight the need for software engineers to upscale themselves- albeit with a twist in the tale.

The 360-degree moment marketing campaign conceptualised and executed by the Monk Entertainment team features some of the leading names on Instagram in the comedy genre of Marathi digital content creation like Karan Sonawane aka Focused Indian as the Professor, and others such as Sidhant Sarfare, Harsh Rane, Vrushali Jawale, Sushant Ghadge and Shravan Kshirsagar portraying his students/ heist members having local Mumbai Station names like Dombivili, Andheri, Virar, Sanpada and Chunabhatti, in place of the international city names of the original.

The script revolves around the Professor, who is actually a professor at an engineering college teaching software engineering, leading his students during a bank heist. As in the original series, it’s in the Professor’s hands to crack the code in order to open a bank vault with treasures they desire to steal. However, the Professor’s coding skills aren’t as proficient as his students think or as he claims.

The plot twist occurs when instead of the professor one of his students- Virar is able to crack the code that the Professor couldn’t, and gets the vault open and saves the heist members. A subtle hint is in the sketch, where Virar is seen watching a Scaler video on coding whilst the Professor keeps the gang waiting.

“At Monk Entertainment, our approach towards branded content is pretty simple: We treat brand’s customers as audience first. For us, a brand’s target customer has to be the protagonist/the main hero of the story we are serving,” said Monk Entertainment manager of content development and IPs Aishwarya Kerkar.

“The above approach really worked for us while conceptualising the sketch. We are very glad that we collaborated with a fantastic and supremely talented cast of Marathi creators to bring this sketch to life. We are happy to see so many organic conversations around the brand in the comments section of the video. Post the success of this video, we are hopeful that more brands will now engage with pop-culture trends and become a part of social conversations around them through video content,” she further added.

The short film, directed by Vaibhav Patil and Rudrang Malkar and written by Aishwarya Kerkar, Rudrang Malkar and Rishita Palshetkar, has a hint of masala comedy with a lot of regional lingo thrown in, coupled with coding jokes that will tickle the funny bones of techies and engineers.

“Moment marketing is a critical lever in our brand strategy; that doesn’t mean we will increase the social clutter by being one of many. So naturally, as a brand, we pick moments that we have a solid and unique point of view on – Money Heist with the professor presented just that sort of opportunity,” said Scaler InterviewBit head of Brand Ranjeet Kumar.

  • Netflix adds 3.98 mn subs in Q1, to spend $17 bn on content this year

Netflix adds 3.98 mn subs in Q1, to spend $17 bn on content this year

KOLKATA: After a year of astounding growth, Netflix has missed the subscriber addition estimates in the first quarter of 2021. The company has added 3.98 million subscribers globally in contrast to its six million guidance. It has estimated even lower gains for the next quarter – one million with almost zero growth from US, Canada, Latin America.

The Los Gatos-based streaming platform has cited the pull-forward growth in 2020, a lighter content slate due to delayed production as the reasons for slowdown in subscriber addition. “We don’t believe competitive intensity materially changed in the quarter or was a material factor in the variance as the over-forecast was across all of our regions,” it stated in a letter to shareholders.

However, it has topped analysts’ expectations in terms of revenue and earnings per share. The entertainment giant has posted $7.16 billion revenue compared to $7.13 billion expectations and $3.75 earnings per share versus estimated $2.97.

“We compete with many activities for consumers’ entertainment time, ranging from watching linear TV, video gaming, and viewing user generated content, just to name a few. Against this backdrop, the entertainment market is huge, giving us plenty of room to grow, if we can continue to improve our service. We believe we are less than 10 per cent of TV screen time in the US and even smaller in other regions and when including mobile devices,” it added.

The streamer expects paid membership growth will re-accelerate in the second half of 2021 thanks to its strong slate with the return of big hits like Sex Education, The Witcher, La Casa de Papel (aka Money Heist), and You, as well as number of original films including the finale to The Kissing Booth trilogy, Red Notice, Don’t Look U. It also promises a comprehensive local language offering including Too Hot to Handle for Brazil and Mexico, Dhamaka for India along with others.

Netflix will spend $17 billion cash on content this year compared to $11.8 billion last year. The company is also testing a crackdown on password sharing. It is working on making sure the people who are using a Netflix account are the ones who are authorised to do so, Netflix COO Greg Peters said.

“We’ll test many things, but we’ll never roll something out that feels like turning the screws,” co-CEO Reed Hastings said.

  • Lockdown gave time to reconnect with friends & family: SPPL’s Avneet Singh Marwah

Lockdown gave time to reconnect with friends & family: SPPL’s Avneet Singh Marwah

NEW DELHI: There is no denying that the lockdown has taken a toll on everyone, but it has also taught people how to reconnect with family and friends. For SPPL CEO Avneet Singh Marwah, this lockdown has helped him become more self-dependent and spend quality time with his family.

Indiantelevision.com got candid with Marwah about what keeps him going during these difficult times, his favourite TV show and more.

    Excerpts:

During the lockdown, how are you keeping yourself optimistic? Is it a new hobby that you have explored?

I became more self-dependent during the lockdown. Earlier, I used to travel every third day and everything used to be taken care of for me. But for the first time in many years, I am back to actively contributing to household chores, from cleaning to washing dishes. I also enjoy cooking dinner for my family. I also found time to reconnect with friends, business colleagues and relatives—whose messages and phone calls I might have missed or ignored while I stayed busy. I have replied to so many DMs and spoken to a lot of people on social media as well, which is a refreshing change. The best habit I picked is dining with my family on a table with no phones or TV. It is great to spend time with them, blessed to be enjoying a meal together and sharing different experiences that we have missed in all these years.

Tell us about your favourite coffee moment?

It was actually in May when mother nature decided to grace us with a perfect morning rain shower that led to amazing weather. It was lush green outside my home as I was sitting in the balcony with my favourite cup of coffee working from home. It was the perfect moment. I don't think I can ever imagine this moment happening while working out of a closed-door office especially in Delhi.

What are you binge-watching on OTT?

Even though I rarely get time to binge-watch TV shows I thoroughly enjoyed binge-watching Money Heist and 100 humans.

Where do you wish to travel post the pandemic?

I'd consider myself lucky if I get a vacation after the lockdown since it will be back to back for me and thinking of time off is out of the question for now. But if I do get time maybe next year or so I'd pick more commercial places like London or New York as it's been a while since I have felt the energy of the crowd. For a more relaxing time, I'd choose Jamaica (Negril or Montego Bay).

How do you spend your me-time?

I don't really get much 'me-time' but whenever there is an opportunity to simply do nothing, I choose to spend that with my son and my family as I live with them so quality family time is always a must. Sometimes at night, I try to simply sit by myself and gather my thoughts which helps me restore my energy.
