  • Piyush Pandey, the adman who gave Indian advertising its soul, passes away

Piyush Pandey, the adman who gave Indian advertising its soul, passes away

MUMBAI: Piyush Pandey, the creative colossus who spoke to India in its own voice passed on on Friday aged 70. The man behind Fevicol’s unbreakable bond, Cadbury’s Kuch khaas hai and Asian Paints’ promise to colour every joy had been suffering from an infection. His funeral will be held on Saturday at Shivaji Park Crematorium in Mumbai.

For more than four decades at Ogilvy India, Pandey rewrote the rules of Indian advertising. He arrived in 1982 at 27, fresh from stints as a cricketer, tea taster and construction worker, and walked into a world dominated by English. His first assignment was a print ad for Sunlight Detergent. What followed was nothing short of a revolution.

Pandey didn’t just change the language of Indian advertising—he changed its grammar. He brought Hindi, colloquial idioms and the rhythms of everyday India into the mainstream. His campaigns for Fevicol, Cadbury, Hutch and Asian Paints became cultural touchstones, teaching a generation that the truest ideas are often the simplest. “Har khushi mein rang laaye” wasn’t just a tagline. It was philosophy.

Under his leadership, Ogilvy India held the top spot in Agency Reckoner, an independent survey by The Economic Times, for 12 years. In 2004, he became the first Asian jury president at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. In 2018, he and his brother, filmmaker Prasoon Pandey, became the first Asians to receive the Lion of St Mark, Cannes’ highest honour for lifetime achievement. In 2016, he was awarded the Padma Shri, the first Indian advertising professional to receive the honour.

Despite the accolades, Pandey remained disarmingly modest. A cricket lover to the end, he compared himself to a player in a team sport. “A Brian Lara can’t win for the West Indies alone,” he once said. “Then who am I?”
He had a simple credo: advertising must touch hearts before it wins awards. “No audience is going to see your work and say, ‘How did they do it?’” he said. “They will say, ‘I love it.’” He often warned young creatives against chasing technology at the expense of empathy, urging them to stay rooted in human experience.

Born in Jaipur to a family of nine children, Pandey grew up surrounded by creativity. His siblings include Prasoon and folk singer-actor Ila Arun. He lent his voice to radio jingles as a child. He also co-wrote the screenplay for Bhopal Express and penned the lyrics for Mile Sur Mera Tumhara, the song that became shorthand for Indian unity. He even acted, appearing in the 2013 film Madras Cafe.

His political work was equally memorable. In 2014, he crafted Ab ki baar, Modi sarkar, a slogan that helped sweep Narendra Modi to power. But his truest legacy lies not in politics, but in the stories and storytellers he nurtured.

Tributes poured in from across India. Prime Minister Modi called him “admired for his creativity”. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman described him as “a titan and legend” who “transformed communication”. Uday Kotak, founder of Kotak Mahindra Bank, remembered Pandey launching his bank in 2003 with a campaign describing banking as “common sense”. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta captured the mood best: “Fevicol ka jod toot gaya. The ad world lost its glue today.”

Pandey stepped down as executive chairman of Ogilvy India in 2023 to take on an advisory role. He is survived by his wife, Nita, his family and a creative community that continues to draw from his philosophy: that the best ideas are born not in boardrooms, but in the lives of ordinary people.

The man who turned commercials into memories has left the building. But his booming laugh, his trademark moustache and his stories—rooted in the street, in life, in listening—remain. India’s advertising soul just got a little quieter.

  • Modi collaborates with leading gamers to boost India’s esports industry

Modi collaborates with leading gamers to boost India’s esports industry

Mumbai: In a bid to drive forward the development of India’s burgeoning Esports industry, the country’s notable gaming personalities convened in a groundbreaking dialogue with PM Modi and discussed the growth of the nation.

The roundtable discussion featured Animesh Agarwal (8Bit_Thug), Naman Mathur (Mortal) and Payal Dhare (PayalGaming) of 8BitCreatives, India’s leading gaming influencer management agency alongside Ganesh Gangadhar (SKRossi), Anshu Bisht (GamerFleet), Mithilesh Patankar (MythPat) and Tirth Mehta.

Esports in India has grown from a pastime activity to a new-age ‘multi-sport’ event, officially recognised by the government. The latest FICCI-EY report titled ‘#Reinvent: India’s media & entertainment sector is innovating for the future’, states that participation in Esports tournaments surged to 1.8 million in 2023, across various prominent titles and competitive levels, with an estimated increase to 2.5 million in 2024. Additionally, game streamers witnessed a notable rise in viewership of 20% to 25%, particularly in Tier-II cities.

Sharing his perspective on discussing the exponential growth of Esports in India with the prime minister, 8Bit Creatives founder and co-founder of S8UL & CEO Animesh Agarwal stated, “It was truly an honour to discuss the rapid rise of Esports in India with our prime minister Modi and share our vision about revolutionising the future. I was personally awed at the PM’s understanding of the nuances of the industry, especially when he mentioned that the industry right now needs to grow with support, and not regulation from the government. We also discussed ease of business around gaming and literally voiced our aspirations at the highest possible forum. Gaming is now a mainstream sport and with the government’s support we will be able to take it to the next level.”

S8UL co-founder & CMO of 8Bit Creatives Naman ‘Mortal’ Mathur called the experience surreal and said “Being in the presence of the PM, discussing the topic closest to my heart, was indeed surreal. Who thought I would be playing with the PM & personally walking him through the nuances of one of the games around the theme of Indian mythology. I hope this moment is an inflection point for gaming & esports in India.”

Payal Dhare looked back at the interaction and mentioned “Discussing prospects for female gamers in India with the PM made my journey so much more worthwhile. I realized that he is a great listener, and perfectly paraphrased the difference between esports & gaming content creation, something we now hope everyone will be able to understand. His vision for game development in India around Indian culture, environmental issues, etc is something I felt very strongly about, and I hope it helps take Indian games to the global stage. Thanks to sir for gifting us a lifetime memory.”

8Bit Creatives co-founder Lokesh ‘Goldy’ Jain expressed his pride and said, “This is bound to have outcomes for the industry which I look forward to, but as of now I am focussing on the happiness I am feeling. Having three of my own sit with the PM and discuss gaming & esports, reminds me of why I do what I do. I am completely aligned with the PM’s vision, and hope to work towards it with my team, to the extent we can.”

During the discussion, the gamers delved into various aspects of gaming, including esports, game development, impact on youth, the global presence of India in the industry, and more. The gamers also shared their individual journeys, struggles & wins.

  • CoVid-2019: Modi and India fight back

CoVid-2019: Modi and India fight back

It was hardly  a month ago that prime minister Narendra Modi’s image appeared to be taking  a beating what with the nation getting divided between those pro-NRC and pro-CAA and those against the two proposed measures to curb illegal immigrants. Marches, followed by clashes, the anger that those participating in them demonstrated, and the government’s I-can’t-hear-you-response to the protests made the headlines. And a tirade of criticism against Modi and his men rained from all sides.

Clearly, the government led by Modi appeared to be stumbling – alienating a sizable portion of the population, especially the younger, and possibly the pseudo secular lot. The economy was not doing well either, with companies unable to pay back loans, banks getting sick with undigestable assets, and overall economic growth slowing down.  The sentiment was downright negative.

Cut to 20 March 2020. The world is grappling with its worst natural disaster in recent memory. The CoVi-2 virus is on the rampage in nation after nation, sending mostly the elderly to an early death.  Leaders the world over seem to be at a loose end to halt the onward march of the dastardly microbe. Predictions and fears are that millions are going to be slain by SARS CoV-2, similar to that carnage that took place in 1918 when the dreaded flu hit the world.

However, one leader who has emerged squeakingly clean from the crisis is but of course Modi.  His deft handling of the CoVid 2019 doom has won him plaudits the world over. He has been relatively quick – at least it appeared so at the time of writing – by sealing off the nation from outside travellers, then rallying all the chief ministers of the vulnerable states to enforce lockdowns at state and even district-levels in some of them. He had the editorial heads of the leading news services on a video conference where he and his bunch of hardworking men briefed them on the importance of right positive communication around SARS CoV-2 to deal with the situation. This would help stem the rot of panic and rumour-mongering that could lead to further disaster.

His coup d’etat was when he got a billion Indians to heed his call and come out of their self-imposed quarantine and ring bells, sound conches, jangle their steel utensils, play drums, clap from their balconies for around 10 minutes as a form of gratitude and salutation for the men and women in white in hospitals who are risking their lives while saving the lives of those afflicted with the demon virus. Of course, there were some rogues who misunderstood his call to action. Instead of social distancing themselves, they came out in large groups, stuck to each other as they marched out on the streets in their own version of thanking doctors and all other service providers for doing their jobs so that they could stay alive.

Many marketing mavens are calling this a marketing coup of sorts. The images and videos that were flashed across the world showed a united India, a society, culture, a civilisation  which is resilient and has lasted thousands of years of various invasions. The narrative was of ONE India; the earlier trope of an India, which is Hindu-Muslim polarised, has been pushed into the background. Hopefully to be forgotten – the common modern young Indian millennial cares not for caste or religion; it is the very rich or those living on the margins of poverty who get swayed by political vitriol.

Even as Modi’s image has received a boost as a decisive leader, he and other Indian leaders have many challenges ahead.  SARS-Cov-2 is a silent spreader; it moves stealthily and fast. Those afflicted feel nothing, until it takes over the cellular infrastructure of the human body, blocks the respiratory pathways, and by then it is too late, especially for the infirm among the elderly.

With that background, team Modi has to maintain the isolation momentum amongst India’s billion plus population, many of whom may be thinking a big fuss is being made about nothing. This should be targeted not just at the general public but even at those occupying seats of power in local governments. Hence, hammering across messaging about the CoVid-2019 precautions that need to be taken should continue with even greater gusto; and it should not stop. And this should continue through television, social media, billboards, bus backs, SMSes, radio, and what have you. Local administrations and police need to ensure that curfews and home quarantines are being strictly adhered to.

Modi needs to be seen at the forefront of this man vs microbe battle. He needs to make regular appearances, portraying his confidence in the nation’s ability to fight back against the invader.

Of course, the infrastructure should also be put in place to test and treat those whom the SARS-CoV-2 virus has afflicted. Industrialists are stepping forward to do their mite: Anand Mahindra has said he would re-fit his factories to make ventilators as well as make his holiday resorts available to house the sick. Mukesh Ambani has quickly built a 100-bed facility with all the gizmos to treat those with Covid-2019.  Many more surely will come forward, and they should. Vaccines are some time away. In the meanwhile, attempts will be made with alternative local treatments; India has so many schools of medicine. Some will work; some will be utter disasters.

As Modi, said, the CoVid-2019 fight has just begun.

Late in the evening of 24 March, he came on national television to declare a national lockdown of 21 days, something he urged Indians to strictly follow. "Coronavirus is a killer which spreads fast. We have to take these painful steps," he said emphatically. "Failing which we will go back 21 years."

  • John Oliver talks about India and Modi on Last Week Tonight

John Oliver talks about India and Modi on Last Week Tonight

As you may know by now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is meeting with US President, Donald Trump, in Trump’s first official visit to India. Modi’s last meeting with POTUS was back in September 2019 during the UN General Assembly. Trump called him “The Father of India”, as they praised each other. However, is that how America and the rest of the world see India?

John Oliver, British comedian and actor, and the host of popular show “Last Week Tonight” on HBO, covered part of how the Modi’s Nationalist Platform and government have taken social conflict to the next level. The winner of 8 Emmy Awards did not hesitate on critiquing Trump’s decision of referring to the current PM as “Father Of India”, a non-official title belonging to Mahatma Gandhi for his influence on the modern concept of the country.

But previous to that encounter Modi had taken many steps to get where he is right now, as this CNN´s Edition fact collection notes. On the date 5 of august 2019, Modi announced the revoking of constitutional provisions that allowed the regions of Kashmir and Jammu to make their own laws. These are Muslim-Majority regions.
John Oliver’s segment also reminds us multiple times that Modi is a Hindu Nationalist, which he calls “provocative”, arguing that “Nehru and Gandhi, explicitly disavowed that…” Quoting: “The State should be undoubtedly secular” (Gandhi, 16 August 1947).

Then we are reminded that the PM’s Party, BJP is closely related to the RSS, a Right-Wing paramilitary volunteer organization founded in 1925. This organization had links according to International Business times, and were avid followers of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, admiring the idea of a pure super race. Sharing the vision of building a powerful nation under the banner of nationalism.

Let’s not forget that Modi was the Chief Minister of his birth state Gujarat during the early ’00s, where the majority of the population is Muslim. In 2002 a fire killed 58 people in a train that carried Hindu pilgrims, and it was established that the fire was intentional, causing riots that ended up killing a thousand people, most of them Muslims.

Modi was criticized and accused of condoning the deadly riots. This did not go good for him as he was not granted a diplomatic visa by the United States for the suspicions of his role during the riots.

In fact, although his popularity rates have been astronomical as president, his encounters with the press on one-to-one interviews are far from a rhetoric example of how to be a public person, National Herald India has a compilation of them.

The actions taken by the BJP to consolidate their ideas has been little less than debatable, as they tried to get Nehru erased from many important bits of History Classes in the country according to this Hindustantimes report. Substituting Nehru’s ideas with the thoughts of “Indian supremacy”, one of the books makes different racist remarks even using the N-Word, according to AlJazeera.

Which brings us to Modi’s last step so far, last December, parliament passed an incredibly controversial bill, known as the CAB, or Citizen Amendment Bill said Bill looks to give Indian Citizenship to immigrants of three neighboring countries as long as they are not Muslims, according to this note from CNN.

The bill allows the government to fast-track those of religious minorities. The Bill has the NRC or National Registration of Citizens as a companion to reach the government’s goals.

The NRC requires people to deliver papers and registration to the state officers, something that in the poorest areas will be incredibly difficult, not to mention it could harm those who are illiterates.

The bills have provoked outrage in many cities in India, and had the country in suspense, Trump's comments about Mod and what could happen the next couple of days could have important consequences on the ideas of the Indian population and government.

The odds of John Oliver’s comments making an impact on this side of the globe are as low as of a debutant horse to win the Kentucky Derby. However, the people have power and Indians have spoken on how they want their country united as they headed to the streets to protest a couple of times. Will there be any changes in power?

Modi’s monthly broadcast reminds media about National Emergency’s shackles

NEW DELHI: “There might have been locks on newspaper houses, radio might have been speaking just one kind of language,” but “given the opportune moment, the citizens gave an example of the power of Democracy.”

Referring to the National Emergency that was declared on the night of 25-26 June 1975, 41 years ago to the date, in his monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Modi added, “A great example of the democratic strength of the common people was witnessed during Emergency”.

The 21st edition of ‘Mann ki Baat’ on 26 June 2016 on All India Radio coincided with the anniversary of the declaration of the National Emergency of 1975, often referred to as the dark day for the Indian media.

Modi said the country’s strength lies in its people and and making democracy a living embodiment.

He noted at the outset that “sometimes my ‘Mann Ki Baat’ is ridiculed a lot and is criticized much also. However, this can only happen because all of us are committed to democracy.”

(In the May broadcast, Modi had lauded All India Radio for broadcasting his monthly ‘Mann ki Baat’ in regional languages on the day he talks to the nation.)
