  • Mirror Now turns One

    Mirror Now turns One

Mumbai: Mirror Now, a channel that fights for you and channelizes its focus on issues that impact you every day, celebrates its first anniversary. Following the launch last year, Mirror Now has successfully attained No. 3* position in Mega cities and increased its reach and viewership by 93%* and 137%* respectively.

Fiercely pursuing pertinent issues and creating desired impact, Mirror Now raised the bar in the English news genre highlighting women’s safety issues in Delhi, the dangers of childlock in radio taxis, questioning the rationale behind the frequent fuel price hikes, the Rs. 400 crores rice scam in Karnataka that exposed corruption and the relentless stand against Pahlaj Nihalani’s regressive decisions as CBFC Chief, amongst many others.

MK Anand, MD & CEO, Times Network, said, “I am glad we acted on our instinct and conviction in giving life to this platform. Almost all English News channels were pursuing a somewhat similar worldview and strategy, mostly imitating the leader Times Now, in pursuing a Nation First approach. This had left the space open for a voice that speaks for the citizen and her everyday issues. Mirror Now made a departure and puts Indians (You) First and shines the spotlight on matters closer to the individual. It’s our mission to contribute in improving Urban Indian life and push services and conditions closer to global standards which we believe hard working Indians deserve. We are glad that we have been able to create strong resonance with our viewers in such a short time and believe that Mirror Now will be a worthy partner to Times Now and together rule the English News market as the top 2 players.”

Faye D’Souza, Executive Editor – Mirror Now added, “It’s been a great one year at Mirror Now. The aim with every show is to focus on the issues faced by citizens, to decentralize news from the National capital Delhi and to turn the spotlight on the rest of India and this outlook has been successful. We are looking forward to bringing to the fore many more issues that are important to our audience. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our viewers for their continuous support.”

With its primetime show ‘The Urban Debate’ hosted by Faye D’Souza, Mirror Now has made dedicated efforts to bring credibility back to journalism, with focus on making everyday life better for Indians. On its first anniversary, Mirror Now has announced a consumer initiative #YouFirst where citizens will get an opportunity to be on the panel of the primetime show, ‘The Urban Debate’ to demand the answers they seek. Viewers have to use the #YouFirst and send a video voicing their issues or a topic that they would like to discuss on the flagship show, ‘The Urban Debate’ via the Mirror Now Whatsapp number 829-199-5633 or social handles (Facebook: @mirrornow, Twitter: @mirrornow, Instagram: @MirrorNow_in). The channel will select issues and call the consumer who have voiced the issues to be a part of the panel on viewer special episodes.

By being the voice of India’s everyday issues like crime, corruption, women’s safety, traffic woes and civic issues such as cleanliness, health, environment, power, water, etc., Mirror Now has been disruptive in more ways than one. The channel has launched a series on on-ground and digital led consumer engagement properties like TicTalkwithFaye, ‘Young India Debates’ and ‘Verified’ that were all designed to provide an open platform for citizens to voice their opinion and help them be a part of the change they want to see. The channel has also successfully taken its online strategy of being the voice of India offline as well.

  • Mirror Now aims to be no. 2 Eng news channel in 2018: Faye D’Souza

Mirror Now aims to be no. 2 Eng news channel in 2018: Faye D’Souza

MUMBAI: Within a year of its launch, Times Television Network’s news channel Mirror Now has achieved phenomenal publicity. Not only has rapid digitisation and its focus on socio-economic issues spurted the channel’s ratings and impact on viewers but also the impressive aura of its executive editor and primetime anchor Faye D’Souza championing the cause of women in media.

The channel launched on 23 March 2017 replacing Magicbricks Now, the network’s partnership with real estate company Magicbricks, which focussed on the country’s realty business. On the other hand, Mirror Now highlights issues that impact people’s daily lives covering issues such as crime, women’s safety, traffic woes, cleanliness, health, environment, power and water to make India a better place to live.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Faye D’Souza says, “The trend which we started and other channels are now following is to bring up the real issue. It was an idea for a channel that the management and we believed in. The kind of response we got from the viewers is very heartening.”

The channel is getting more traction from primary urban centres like Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad and Kolkata. “The traction is not only in the form of ratings but also as feedback through emails and social media platforms which we receive,” D’Souza adds.

In the month of July last year, the strongest markets mentioned by D’Souza were Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore. Its plan last year was to engage viewers of 34-36 cities with a million plus population in India. “Our aim is to be number two in English news channel genre by the end of 2018. We take a lot of feedback from our viewers. We don’t want to compete with other English news channels because if we compete we will be forced to cover news the way they do” she says.

The channel’s aim is to increase news coverage in more cities. “For Mirror Now 2018 would be to constantly think of fresh ways to approach the news by putting up lot more programming and launching more shows after we had a slight setback because of the Kamala Mills fire,” D’Souza says.

The blaze that erupted in the Kamala Mills compound in Mumbai on 28 December impacted the operations of Times TV Network which has its headquarters and operations there. Right now, Mirror Now is using the Times Now and ET Now offices to function. D’Souza says that it will be a month before the channel can resume operations in its own office.

  • Mirror Now & govt working together on public issues without yelling, says Faye D’souza

MUMBAI: Mirror Now, one of the newest English channels, has not done any marketing since its launch around six months ago. Covering all Indian cities, Mirror Now claims to have got a good response especially from Bangalore and Chennai.

The channel and the government are working together on public issues. “The central, Maharashtra and Karnataka government are working closely with us on public issues,” says Mirror Now executive editor Faye D’Souza.

“Our strongest markets are — Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore. And, we have beaten our internal target a lot faster — the target set for a year has already been completed.” “We don’t yell, but ask tough questions politely,” she asserted.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, she said, “We are introducing shows and working on new concepts. We are working on morning primetime from 7-10am, early evening prime time 5:30pm onwards. Our disruptive shows will be on our late prime time shows — from 11pm -1am.”

Talking about content, D’Souza added, “Stories are coming from across India. We get 25-30 calls/hour during our prime time shows.” To a question she said, “Despite being a small team of 25, our content speaks louder than marketing, the ratio being 95:5.”

About measuring success, the executive editor says, “I look at two yardsticks, first one is numbers from the BARC India point of view, and secondly what type of response you are getting from the social media.”

On the marketing front, she said: “We didn’t launch it on a large platform, having marketing campaign across the country even as, being a Times group channel, everything was available to us.”
