GroupM closes 2019 with billings exceeding $50B: COMvergence report

Mumbai: GroupM, WPP’s media investment group, will close 2019 with more than $50B in annual billings for the first time, and three GroupM agencies in the top five of global media agency networks based on billings, according to COMvergence’s projections. Mindshare, MediaCom and Wavemaker rank number two, four and five, respectively, with MediaCom posting the highest growth among all agencies in the top ten over the last year at +6.8 per cent.

“This year, GroupM won and successfully defended $2 billion of businesses,” said GroupM chief growth officer Elizabeth McCune. “This is an incredible accomplishment on top of delivering breakthrough and award-winning work for our clients. A big part of this success, among other things, is attributed to a combination of data-led insights that drove our clients to new ways of thinking about their business, creativity in activation ideas, and the ability to connect client teams across markets with a more aligned strategy. I’m thankful to our client partners for choosing us and proud of our teams for earning their trust.”

According to the report, the total estimated billings handled by the media agency networks and standalone/dedicated client units and agencies – operated by the big six holding companies – reached about $166B (across 41 markets representing 94 per cent of the global media investments covered by COMvergence – Brazil and Japan excluded). GroupM had the largest industry market share at 17.2 per cent and 30.2 per cent intra-Big 6 group share.

GroupM’s m/SIX was also one of three networks that increased their billings by a double-digit figure (+14.8 percent) over the last year on a global level, while Essence grew double digits in both EMEA and APAC.

COMvergence will release final 2019 billings figures in April 2020.

  • Mindshare India creates India’s largest audio-conferencing bridge solution ‘mSamvaad’

Mindshare India creates India’s largest audio-conferencing bridge solution ‘mSamvaad’

MUMBAI: Mindshare, India’s largest full-service media agency and part of GroupM, collaborated with Cosmic Information and Technology Ltd to launch a new voice-driven platform called ‘Audio Conferencing Bridge’ called ‘mSamvaad’. The solution helps connect leading brands of the country to the audience in media-dark areas on the largest voice conferencing infrastructure with a capacity of 25,000 concurrent calls.

A large segment of Indian audiences cannot be reached through the traditional or the new-age digital mediums. This problem of low penetration coupled with low levels of literacy makes it difficult for brands to surpass the barriers of communication in remote areas. However, the rural centres of the country have been recorded as driving the telecom growth in the nation. In the Indian ecosystem, about 450 million active SIM cards are resting on feature phones, the highest across the world. This renders telecom as the medium with the largest penetration in the markets that have low access to data.

Mindshare devised a solution that uses the power of telecom as the key channel to engage, educate and create awareness through SMS, chat rooms and voice calls for one-on-ones as well as conference connections. It also enables a two-way communication on a selected basis. The key differentiator of the platform is that it operates independent of the internet and can be used with any voice-supported device, even landline and feature phones.

In its first venture, Mindshare rolled out a high-scaled engagement program for Horlicks to reach out to mothers in the media dark areas of Bihar for its new variant that improves nutrient absorption among children. The aim of the program was to generate awareness on the brand's scientific credentials through an audio message recorded in the voice of legendary Bhojpuri star, Ravi Kishan.

Mindshare’s approach to deliver the brand message via a 2-way dialogue bore great results. The Horlicks nutrient absorption communication reached 4 million unique users. The 10-minutes conference bridge saw a breakthrough of 29 percent completed listenership. Through the campaign, Mindshare answered the call for nutrition with resounding effect, 81 percent recalled the new variant for its emphasis on nutrient absorption in children. Horlicks observed an impressive increase of 33 percent TOM and 12 percent of L3M usage.

With carrier grade infra, the alliance is one of the largest in-house telecom infrastructures in India on a single location from all leading telecom operators, managed in a high-tech data centre. It has advanced servers, big-data platform, cloud backups, secured firewalls, high speed primary and backup Internet leased lines, and 24×7 power backups under the supervision of team comprising network engineers, data scientists, and engineering minds. The bridge enables massive outreach in minimum time in the most cost-effective way.

Sharing his thoughts on the innovation, Mindshare India national head – mobile Niraj Ruparel said, “Since the past decade, our efforts have enabled number of top brands to engage their end-consumers with the most advanced and innovative voice-based solutions. Our solutions are aimed at penetrating the fragmented consumer segments of India and surpassing the barriers of communication due to low literacy rates and lack of access to data and connectivity. "mSamvaad" is one of our most successful voice product which we plan to take to the next level in the near future. We look forward to extending this platform to all prospects that are looking at customer engagement in rural India.”

“Cosmic Information & Technology Limited is committed & will continue to leverage its large & robust Voice Infrastructure and in-house innovation lab, to co-create quality solutions, which addresses brand challenges and help them to have a simple, yet targetted delivery of message as well as meaningful conversations with their brand audience, resulting into deeper level of engagements.”, said Cosmic Information and Technology Limited CEO Nilesh Bhagat.

Speaking about the success of the campaign, area marketing lead, nutrition, GSK Vikram Bahl, said, “This is a laudable initiative by Mindshare India along with Cosmic Infotech and we are glad to have been a part of it. We have always undertaken efforts to create awareness around holistic nutrition, especially in rural areas and this was a great opportunity for us to achieve our objective. We look forward to many such innovations in technology that can help us deliver intended message to rural markets.”

  • Mindshare collaborates with Apollo Tyres to focus on the SUV segment

Mindshare collaborates with Apollo Tyres to focus on the SUV segment

MUMBAI: Mindshare, India’s largest full-service media agency, a part of Group M, launched an integrated media campaign for Apollo Tyres’ new range – Apollo Apterra AT2. This all-terrain tyre complements Apollo’s existing Apterra range including specialised Highway Luxury (HL), Highway Terrain (HT), High Performance (HP) and the All-Terrain (AT) tyres for the SUVs.

The riveting all-India TVC for Apollo Tyres’ SUV segment seeks to add more to ‘Bad roads go to good places’, which is the key message for the company’s tyres for SUV enthusiasts. The campaign aims at establishing Apollo Tyres as a high-technology brand, which has unmatched traction and durability and has been thoroughly tested in the toughest of conditions in South Africa before being introduced.

Mindshare used its proprietary tools like [m]Platform and Adaptive Marketing Framework to capture the interests of the auto enthusiasts. For Apterra, Mindshare partnered with online video platforms with a hybrid approach of behavioural targeting & high reach via Cricket (Ind-SA T20 series) and Entertainment (KBC). High affinity platforms and niche movie premieres were also utilised to establish the proposition. Partnering a leading auto-portal, Mindshare also did an off-roading day sponsorship. Taking the campaign a step further – key highways of India were identified for off-roading, and impactful creatives were being placed along them.

Commenting on the launch of the Apollo Apterra AT2 tyres, Apollo Tyres Ltd president, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa (APMEA) Satish Sharma said, “We are sharpening our focus on the SUV segment in India, with specialised tyres for different terrains, as this vehicle segment is growing faster than passenger cars. The excellent test results, and the global efforts that have gone into developing the Apollo Apterra AT2, gives us the confidence that this tyre will set a new benchmark in the all-terrain tyre space, and will further propel our leadership in the SUV segment.”

Sharing her thoughts on the new campaign, Mindshare North & East senior vice president, client leadership Ruchi Mathur said, “There is an organic momentum in the SUV category and therefore, this was the perfect time to launch Apollo Apterra AT2. Our primary task was to decode, identify and then reach the SUV enthusiast. Given that we were talking to a niche segment, we needed a hyper customised approach, which our proprietary tool ([m]Platform) and framework (the Adaptive Marketing Framework), helped with. By leveraging these, we understood the interests of the target audience and converted these insights into a strong strategy and action plan, across offline and online channels. We played to the niche segment, but with scale.”

Apollo Tyres has also curated #BadRoadBuddies, a community for budding and existing off-roaders to come together and discover the unexplored beauty that beholds in this vast terrain that is India. The people who belong to this community are the ones who go the distance to make it through some of the harshest roads in the country to get breath-taking views and lifetime worth of experiences.

  • Mindshare wins ‘Media Network of the Year’ award at Cannes 2019

Mindshare wins ‘Media Network of the Year’ award at Cannes 2019

MUMBAI: Mindshare, the media agency network and part of WPP, recently got awarded ‘Media Network of the Year’ at one of the most coveted festival of creativity, Cannes Lions 2019. The agency won a Silver in the Media Lions category for HUL Lifebuoy’s ‘Infection Alert System’ and a Bronze in the Creative Data Lions category for the same campaign.

79 per cent of rural consumers use the basic ‘Feature Phone’ which has no internet connectivity. This medium has 6 times higher reach than any other medium in rural areas. The solution was to create a data-led Infection Alert System that would act as a lighthouse to alert the rural consumers when they were most vulnerable to fatal diseases. This was done by leveraging data and the reach of mobile phones in traditionally media dark geographies. Over 64 million Outbound Dialler (OBD) calls were made over a period of 8 weeks to warn the locals on the outbreak of a particular communicable disease in their area and the necessary preventive measures that should be taken.

The Infection Alert System (IAS) also known as ‘Adaptive Data Lighthouse’ was created by Mindshare and used Government of India data on disease outbreaks which was collected from 34,000 rural community health centres across 822 sub-districts/villages of Uttar Pradesh & Bihar. The challenges with this data were that it was unstructured, maintained in paper-forms, in local languages with no metadata standards. Old paper records were digitised and then algorithms used to read and load data into a structured database of 21 communicable diseases. Historical disease incidence was modelled to arrive at predictive incidence rates at a village level, using time series models. If predicted severity of disease incidence for villages were above a certain threshold then warning calls would be activated for those villages only and not the entire state.

The insight behind the campaign was that most Indians eat and feed food using their hands and wash hands without soap. This practice is rampant in rural areas in India which make them susceptible to various communicable diseases. Mindshare’s campaign is a bright example of purpose-driven marketing.  The driving force behind the Lifebuoy brand is an inspiring vision for more hygienic, healthier environment and to create vital communities which the campaign embodied. MA Parthasarathy (MAPS) said, “Reaching out to rural consumers has always been a challenge for brands. 70 per cent of Lifebuoy’s sales come from rural India. Building on Lifebuoy’s identity of being a purpose-driven brand, we utilised two of Mindshare’s core pillars- data and technology to create an innovation which made scalable difference. Awards like these motivate teams who were heavily invested in making this a success and also assure us that we are doing some great work.”

“The Lifebuoy “Infection Alert System” brings together some really sharp brand insight with deep media expertise to deliver relevant messaging in a precise fashion to the target audience. The collaboration across various teams on the brand side, media agency and extended partners who helped us land this at a tremendous scale is truly noteworthy.  And, the impact along with the recognition is the true testimony of the power of the idea and the validation of the flawless execution by the teams. The Cannes wins make the winning streak of Lifebuoy “Infection Alert System” even more special.” said Hindustan Unilever Limited general manager – media (South Asia) Gaurav Jeet Singh.

“It’s a proud moment for HUL and Mindshare on the recent Cannes Lions wins for the Lifebuoy Infection Alert System.  A fine realisation of data-driven marketing, the campaign made the best use of unstructured data on disease outbreaks and institutionalise an infection alert system in the hinterland. This warning system would alert consumers most at risk of life-threatening diseases through an automatic calling system. Being contextual to the prevalent disease in their village, consumer receptivity was high resulting in high recall,” commented Hindustan Unilever Limited executive director, beauty and personal care Sandeep Kohli.

“It's been quite a journey putting this together and implementing it at scale. This award is a fantastic recognition of the effort that Mindshare, the media and brand teams have put in,” Kohli added.

“The purpose of our brand Lifebuoy, India’s largest selling soap, is to help millions of mothers stay one step ahead of infections so that their children fall sick less often. We were able to do this through ‘our infection alert system’, which has won at Cannes, by leveraging data and the reach of mobile phones in traditionally media dark geographies, to ensure we live our purpose.” commented Hindustan Unilever Limited vice president – marketing Harman Dhillon.

  • Idea promotes video calling feature in new ad

Idea promotes video calling feature in new ad

MUMBAI: Mindshare, India’s largest full-service media agency and part of GroupM, launched a unique interactive campaign with Mallika Dua – a renowned comedian and social media influencer, as part of Idea 4G #IndiaKaLiveNetwork initiative. The campaign is an attempt to bring alive the experience of video calling with a renowned celebrity in real time.

Building on the brand’s tagline of ‘India Ka Live Network’, Idea 4G Live leveraged the power of video calls in an attempt to create awareness about common misdoings of people and encourage them to change their behaviour.

Mindshare and Idea 4G unveiled a distinctive voice-enabled AI led interactive video chat bot ad campaign that enabled millions of users to interview Dua.  This has never been attempted before in the digital mobile ad-space and was co-created by mCanvas, the experiential storytelling ad platform for small screens. The tool allows users to interact with Dua, and ask her questions ranging from personal trivia to the benefits of Idea 4G network and the power of live videos by simply tapping on the mic icon. Trending questions are also prompted at the bottom of the screen which the user can scroll through and ask Dua. The innovation is done through live media banners placed on popular websites, which can be accessed through mobile phone browsers.

The experience is designed to be seamless and resemble a live video call with the user's own face seen on the screen. This experience can last for as long as the user has questions to ask and also allows users to ‘Get Idea’ in just a few clicks.

The innovation uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) where the ad creative listens to user questions in English & Hindi and uses Machine Learning (ML) to analyse all the questions asked by previous users and increase the accuracy of the responses. For example, if a user asks a question in Hinglish, the AI detects that it contains English and Hindi. Next, the ML helps accurately assign a relevant answer to that question.

The campaign is live on several media and news websites and has already seen engagement from over 7.2 million users. The campaign is witnessing about eight times higher than the average mobile-banner click-through rate. Interactions with this creative have also been found to last for an average of 22 seconds, with some users spending over 10 minutes.

Speaking about the launch of the campaign, Mindshare India national head – mobile Niraj Ruparel said, “We at Mindshare always look forward to crafting innovative and effective solutions for brands. Idea, as a brand, does not shy away from taking an unconventional path when it comes to communication. With the video-chat bot ad we have come together to create a first of its kind innovation on an effective platform. By leveraging on Mallika Dua’s popularity, and Idea’s 4G network, we are hopeful of bringing about a change in people’s behaviour, and habits, as well as encourage more people to go Live to highlight societal issues.”

Vodafone Idea Ltd president marketing Sunita Bangard said, “Over the years, brand Idea has built a strong reputation for creating purposeful, conscientious campaigns that encourage change for the betterment of society. The Idea 4G #IndiaKaLiveNetwork campaign highlighted the power of streaming LIVE videos over Idea’s robust 4G network thereby driving a positive change in behaviour among citizens. In its endeavor to engage with the digital natives, Brand Idea has always tried digital-first initiatives for our ATL campaigns, many of which have been appreciated and rewarded at various digital forums. Our innovative AI-and ML-aided campaign has set new benchmarks in digital advertising.”

  • Series E 3 billion yen (USD$27M) funded start-up sansan appoints Neo Media World as agency of record

Series E 3 billion yen (USD$27M) funded start-up sansan appoints Neo Media World as agency of record

MUMBAI: Neo, the global performance marketing agency network that is part of Mindshare has been appointed by Sansan as its agency partner, effective February of 2019. Neo is designed to work with digital economy businesses to scale at speed. This will see the agency handling media investment, planning, and management for the newly funded start-up. The scope of work also covers Sansan and its portfolio of products.

Tokyo-based Sansan has, since 2007, developed unique cloud-based contact management tools for corporations and individuals. Centred on business cards as building blocks, Sansan’s main offerings enable remarkably fast and accurate building of a cloud-based contact database, accessible anywhere. Sansan’s flagship B2B system is at work in over 6,000 companies, including Lenovo Group Ltd, Merck & Co, and Seven & i Holdings Co.

The most recent round of investment by Japan Post Capital, T. Rowe Price, SBI Investment, and DCM Ventures brings Sansan’s total funding to over USD$100 million.

Sansan boasts an overwhelming 82% market share in Japan. The company launched its namesake B2B product, Sansan, in Singapore in 2015 and its B2C service, Eight, in India in 2017. Sansan’s products digitize contact data with superb accuracy enabled by proprietary optical character recognition (OCR) enhanced by AI and human input.

“When I started the global expansion for Eight, I sought agency partners that can truly provide Sansan with scale and speed,” says Edward Senju, Executive Producer and Leader for Eight India. “With the Neo and GroupM partnership in Singapore, we aim to capture a region ripe for disruption.”

“In this new economy world, growing and matured start-ups seek unconventional thinking and solutions to effectively scale in an important growth period. Our understanding of audience, tools, and thought-provoking ideas for this blue ocean market gives us an edge in forming this partnership. Our global network of 116 offices in 86 countries makes it possible for Sansan to tap into our agility and on-the-ground strengths,” says Animesh Kumar, CEO of Neo Singapore.

“At this build stage of Sansan—and Eight, we are young and it’s hard to consider a partnership with a GroupM agency,” says Krishna Agarwal, Sansan Senior Marketing Manager. “Chatting with Animesh was enlightening: Neo somewhat resembles a start-up agency with GroupM wings. Its ability to move with the quickness of a start-up, yet with stable and reliable operations and support of a large network agency, is a major plus.”

“Neo has been investing in people, which has led to the deep specialism in what we do. The team brings

more than 15 years of experience in connected media, which has resulted in award-winning campaigns over the years. Partnership with Sansan comes at an opportune time and we are confident in strengthening their brand and business in the coming years”, added Aashay Shah, Neo’s Regional Media Director for Sansan.

With the Series E funding, Sansan is now looking to expand globally with Singapore and the rest of Southeast Asia as their focus markets.

  • Ad agencies expect reallocation of budgets post TRAI tariff order implementation

Ad agencies expect reallocation of budgets post TRAI tariff order implementation

MUMBAI: Since the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced its new tariff order, making it mandatory for TV channels to keep a transparent display of the rates of its channels and bouquets and providing the viewers the liberty to pay only for those channels that they want to see, there has been quite a turmoil in the worlds of those associated with the industry.

While channels, MSOs, and LCOs are busy ensuring a smooth transition to the new regime, the advertising world is looking at a cloudy sky that only offers a lot of uncertainty towards the impact of this order on their planning.

Speaking about the same at a recent press meet, Mindshare chief operating officer, South Asia Amin Lakhani had said, “As an industry, we have seen a lot of volatility and uncertainty in the past 4-5 years. This is also an interesting one.” He added that the industry will have to follow a wait and watch approach to see the impact of the new order on the advertising world. But he was also certain that people will not change their habit of watching TV.

Indiantelevision.com talked to some more industry insiders to understand what the new order will mean for TV, digital and the advertising world.

Mindshare chief digital officer South Asia Vinod Thadani reflected same thoughts as Amin and said, “Any call on the way the TRAI order will impact TV viewership would be too early. The various scenarios are yet to play out and once there is clarity on the impact on TV distribution and viewership, we will be able to take any calls on its impact on digital.”

Isobar group MD-South Asia Shamsuddin Jasani on the other hand was sure that this new order is going to help the advertisers as they will now have a better idea of which channels are popular and thus, where to invest.

He said, “I don’t think it will impact the ad-spends on TV drastically but will lead to re-allocation of fund by the advertisers. Now, we have an even better data of premium channels and we can thus improve the way we spend.”

Shamsuddin is of the view that OTT might gain because of the order, “With OTT, you can track the number of users from day one. So, if advertisers use the right science (to understand these numbers), it will definitely help OTT players.”

Update Advertising MD Sharad Alwe affirmed that the new TRAI tariff order is definitely going to impact the viewership of pay channels. He said, “The TRAI ruling will perforce make the viewer carefully select his pay channels of choice (appointment viewing) and create or select his package so that his cable subscription does not go higher than what he was paying currently. On certain channels, where he watches programming based on specific events, be it sports or reality shows, he may buy these channels only during that specific period. FTA channels & MSO/LCO based cable channels with better and relatable content will attract higher viewership.”

But he doesn’t see this affecting the ad spends made by the brands on any of these TV channels. “These changes will impact channel rates but we do not see any negative impact on ad spends,” he says adding, “OTT offerings of the various media networks like Hotstar, SonyLiv, ZEE5, Voot might see an uptake for their selective content.”

Mobclixs Technologies founder and CEO Dushyant Jani was very positive about the new regime making the entire broadcast framework transparent and fair. He said, “I think 50 per cent of the viewers watch not more than 30 channels but they are sold a bundled pack of 300 channels, which cost roughly between Rs 250 and Rs 450 depending on whether it is a cable connection or DTH service. When consumers select their channels, the ones that don’t meet their expectations get dropped out in the process.”

Talking about its impact on advertising, Dushyant contended, “The drop in channels will impact the advertising revenue. For advertisers, it is wise to bet on the popular channels and obviously, the lesser popular channels will lose big on advertising revenue. However, the impact on the advertisers due to this will still be much higher as they need to cater to and capitalise on the top-selling channels but may not have enough time to plan their advertising budget.”

Bijoor Consults Inc founder and brand guru Harish Bijoor feels that the new tariff regime is definitely a ‘jolt’ point for TV as well as the advertising industry. According to him while there are differentiated views on what impact this whole scenario will have on TV ad spends, one thing is certain that OTT is surely going to benefit in the long run.
