TiVo subscription crosses 3 million mark

MUMBAI: Digital video recorders (DVRs) company TiVo Inc. claims that as on 31 January 2005, its subscription base exceeded three million.

The company claims that it has added approximately 698,000 total net subscriptions during its fourth quarter, including approximately 251,000 TiVo-Owned subscriptions and 447,000 DIRECTV with TiVo subscriptions.

“Last year, we launched an aggressive growth plan that included increasing our subscription acquisition spending to grow our base, strengthen our market position, and fuel our recurring revenue model,” said Mike Ramsay, TiVo’s Chairman and CEO in a company release.

“We accomplished our goal of doubling our sub base to over 3 million subscriptions,” he added

    TiVo president Marty Yudkovitz quits

MUMBAI: Home entertainment solutions provider TiVo has announced the resignation of Marty Yudkovitz as president of the company.

He will remain with TiVo in a consulting capacity on certain continuing matters for a period of time. Marty has been president of the company since May of 2003.

“When I joined TiVo I planned to move my family to California, but as the demands of my role grew, the need to spend even more time on both coasts grew as well, requiring a heavy commute no matter where I lived,” Yudkovitz said in a company release. “I’ve chosen instead to find the most logical time to resign as president and re-acquaint myself with my wife and kids.”

“Marty has achieved a tremendous amount in his time with the company, particularly with the television and advertising industries. Given how far we’ve come, we agreed that now seemed a good time if Marty wanted to transition out of his full-time role as president,” said TiVo CEO Mike Ramsay.

    Yudkovitz’s resignation was effective 31 January 2005.

‘External obligations’ force DirecTV to quit TiVo Board

MUMBAI: DirecTV Group Inc. vice chairman Eddy Hartenstein has stepped down from TiVo Inc.’s board of directors after an eight-month commitment.

The US-based digital video recorder (DVR) maker TiVo gets the bulk of its business from a co-marketing agreement they have with DirecTV, provider of digital television entertainment, broadband satellite networks and services, and global video and data broadcasting.

The general perception being that DVRs like TiVo kill television advertisements, News Corp’s taking over of DirecTV late last year had raised doubts on the future of the TiVo-DirecTV collaboration. So Hartenstein’s membership on the TiVo board was seen as a symbolic gesture solidifying the partnership between TiVo and DirecTV.

DirecTV is quoted in media reports as saying the resignation was part of an effort to reduce “certain external obligations” in order to focus more time on DirecTV.

“We look forward to working with him in the future on new initiatives as we continue to grow our relationship with DirecTV,” said TiVo Chief Executive Mike Ramsay.

While regretting that other obligations prevented him from further fulfilling his duties of a TiVo director, Hartenstein has expressed his interest in continuing the strong business relationship between DirecTV and TiVo.
