  • Netflix launches improved parental controls for families

    Netflix launches improved parental controls for families

    MUMBAI: Netflix, based on feedback from its members, has launched new, improved controls on its service to help parents, guardians and elders make the right viewing decisions for their families.

    Parents can now:

    ●      PIN protect individual profiles to prevent kids from using them;

    ●      Tailor their kids’ Netflix experience by filtering out titles that are not appropriate for their age;

    ●      Remove individual series or films by title. When this filter is used, the blocked title(s) won’t show up anywhere in that profile;

    ●      Easily review each profile’s setting using the “Profile and Parental Controls” hub within account settings;

    ●      See what their kids have been watching within the profile created for them; and

    ●      Turn off auto play of episodes in kids profiles.

    These controls can be added to the Netflix profile by going to account settings on a laptop or a mobile browser.

    “Choice and control have always been important for our members, especially parents. We hope that these improved controls will help parents make the right choices for their families,” said Netflix kids product manager Michelle Parsons.

    Recognising that every family is different and to give them more viewing choices, Netflix is investing in a wide variety of kids and family films and TV shows from all over the world, including award-winning animated films like Klaus, interactive shows like Carmen Sandiego: To Steal or Not to Steal and kids’ series such as Boss Baby. The Indian kids series Mighty Little Bheem is the most-watched preschool series on Netflix globally, and the second-most watched kids’ series for Netflix worldwide.

    Since its launch in April 2019, Mighty Little Bheem has been watched by over 27 million households worldwide, including in Latin America, Australia and New Zealand. Netflix has also announced Ghee Happy, an animated show about Hindu deities who, as children, attend a special daycare and discover their own powers.

    Netflix launches mobile plan for India at Rs 199/month

    MUMBAI: Netflix has announced the launch of a new mobile plan for India. At INR 199 per month, members will be able to enjoy all of Netflix’s content—uninterrupted and without ads—in standard definition (SD) on one smartphone or tablet at a time. This is its fourth Indian plan, in addition to the existing basic, standard and premium plans.

    “Our members in India watch more on their mobiles than members anywhere else in the world-  and they love to download our shows and films. We believe this new plan will make Netflix even more accessible and better suit people who like to watch on their smartphones and tablets—both on the go and at home,” said Netflix director, product innovation Ajay Arora.

    According to a FICCI-EY 2019 report, Indians spend 30% of their phone time—and over 70% of their mobile data—on entertainment. Netflix is investing heavily in Indian films and series across all genres and for all generations, including much-loved hits like Sacred Games, Chopsticks and Mighty Little Bheem. Thirteen new films and nine new original series are already in the pipeline.

    To sign up for the mobile plan:

    1.   Download the Netflix app or visit the website www.netflix.com

    2.   Select the mobile plan for INR 199/month

    3.   Add account details and try the first month for free (for new members)

    In addition, to the introduction of a new mobile plan, it has adjusted prices for the three existing plans as follows:

    ·       Mobile – INR 199/month (new tier)

    ·       Basic – INR 499/month

    ·       Standard – INR 649/month

    ·       Premium – INR 799/month

    Netflix continues to improve the mobile experience with features like Smart Downloads, mobile previews, and sharing to social media. Most recently, it improved the Android app—by making the sign-up flow for new members and the app load more quickly on entry-level smartphones.

  • Green Gold, Amazon Prime put Kerala martial art on the map

    Green Gold, Amazon Prime put Kerala martial art on the map

    MUMBAI: Green Gold Animation is rediscovering Kalaripayattu, a lost martial art form of Kerala. With the purpose to educate through entertainment, the animation studio is making an exclusive series for Amazon Prime titled Kalari Kids. The series will be launched around Christmas with 20 episodes of 11 minutes each in season one.

    Recently, the animation house also inked a deal with Netflix to digitally broadcast Mighty Little Bheem—a spinoff of its popular character Chhota Bheem.

    Talking about the new series, Green Gold Animation CEO Rajiv Chilaka said, “The IP rights of Kalari Kids will be with Green Gold but we may have co-producers as partners. Amazon Prime will hold the OTT rights and programming license. This is a multi-season deal between us. The first season will take a year of production to complete.”

    The show will be telecast on television later as one episode per week. Currently, the deal is under process to give television rights to the broadcaster. The production cost of Kalari Kids is higher than Chhota Bheem but lower than Mighty Little Bheem. Green Gold is making a total of 60 episodes for Amazon over three seasons with a dedicated team of 100. Twelve episodes are already in the bank.

    According to Green Gold Animation vice president (content sales) Bharath Laxmipati, Kalaripayattu is a dying art and not many kids are aware of it. “We have never made any show on Indian martial art form, so for us, it is an opportunity to entertain kids with a purpose. Therefore, through our show, we want to teach martial arts and talk about courage & bravery because a sport like Kalari builds strength and character in children,” he said.

    The marketing and promotions of the show will be done by the Amazon Prime team with heavy focus on digital. According to Laxmipati, Amazon is leaving no stone unturned to market the show.

    The animation or graphic style of the show is reminiscent of the beauty, sophistication and stylisation of the traditional Kerala paintings. The animation company has taken the best artists and culturally highlighted the beautiful creations of India.

    Kalari Kids is based on Kalaripayattu martial art form that has three variants, Arappa Kay, Pilla Thangi and Vatta Thiripp, which are distinguished by their attacking and defensive patterns. Surprisingly, this lesser-known martial arts form was developed in the 6th century BC. Let’s see how Amazon and Green Gold Animation bring Kalaripayattu back to life.
