Mumbai: Former Twitter India head Manish Maheshwari has moved on from the company to work on an ed-tech venture, Metaversity.

Maheshwari, who had moved to San Francisco in August as Twitter senior director for new markets, announced his decision in a tweet late Tuesday.

“After close to three years, I am leaving Twitter to dedicate myself to #education and #teaching. While it is with a heavy heart that I leave Twitter, I am excited about the impact that can be created globally through education,” he wrote.

Maheshwari said he is collaborating with Tanay Pratap, who has worked with Microsoft as a senior software engineer. “We will start by imparting employability training via a virtually immersive platform, which we are calling #Metaversity,” Maheshwari said in a series of tweets.

“COVID-19 has fundamentally changed not only the skills needed to be successful in the new economy, but also how those skills are imparted. I am thrilled about how technology, particularly metaverse, can be leveraged to improve education and employability,” he further said.

Maheshwari is a graduate of Shri Ram College of Commerce and has completed his MBA from Wharton Business School, where he served on the MBA admissions committee, was elected the Asia Club co-president and had won Shils-Zeidman Award, the highest award for entrepreneurship at Wharton.

He had joined Twitter in April 2019 to head its Indian operations, after spending over three years at Network18 Media and Investments where he was the chief executive officer, digital. Prior to Network18, he worked with companies like Flipkart, Intuit, McKinsey & Company, and Procter & Gamle since May 1999.

MUMBAI: In the last two years, Twitter has just seen a rise in the number of users. It has become a phenomenon. But the microblogging site was criticised time and again for gender imbalance in the top ranks. However, the social media platform seems to have rectified it by bringing on to board executive Marjorie Scardino to its director ranks.

Scardino is not just Twitter’s first female director; she’s also one of the first person with an experience in old media. Scardino with whom the Twitter board to expand to eight members, is a former chief executive of publishing company Pearson and has served as an editor for the Associated Press, a publisher of a Georgia Gazette newspaper and is also the former CEO of The Economist Group and a former board member of phone maker Nokia.

In a regulatory filing, Twitter said that Scardino will replace David Rosenblatt on Twitter’s audit committee. However, Rosenblatt will continue to be on the compensation committee.
