In Black & White: Sudhir Chaudhary’s prime time show on Aaj Tak tops viewership charts

MUMBAI: When the late Michael Jackson sang the hit single Black or White in 1991, little did he know the title would inspire a news program’s title Black & White two decades later, which would become a massive hit in India. Of course MJ’s song was all about respecting colour, and Black & White, hosted by consulting editor Sudhir Chaudhary on Aaj Tak, dissects developments of the day during prime-time.

So strong has been Black & White’s  grip on viewers, according to research data provided by TV Today, that it has held on to the leadership position across television and digital platforms in early February. The programme topped Hindi news viewership in week five of 2025, recording a gross average minute audience of 9,746 during its 9 pm slot, according to ratings agency Barc. News18 India followed with 9,355 viewers, whilst Republic Bharat drew 8,752.

On YouTube Live between 3-7 February, the show averaged 136,000 concurrent viewers, significantly ahead of India TV at 68,100 and Republic Bharat at 46,700. Times Now Navbharat and ABP News recorded 32,600 and 29,200 viewers respectively.

Chaudhary, who joined Aaj Tak in 2022 after senior roles at Zee News and Wion, presents the nightly analysis programme across television, digital platforms and out-of-home screens. He was previously awarded the Ramnath Goenka journalism excellence award in 2013.

The show’s cross-platform performance has helped cement Aaj Tak’s position as India’s most-watched Hindi news channel, according to a release issued by the company.

Sony Music ties up with The Estate of Michael Jackson to release ‘Thriller 40’

Mumbai: Thriller 40, a double CD set featuring Michael Jackson’s original masterpiece Thriller, including never-before-released tracks that Jackson worked on for the Thriller album, has been announced by Sony Music and the Estate of Michael Jackson in honour of the album’s 40th anniversary. More than 100 million copies of the album have been sold worldwide.

Thriller‘s immersive audio mixes by Serban Ghenea and John Hanes are now accessible at several DSPs, such as 360 Reality Audio on Amazon and Spatial Audio on Apple Music.

Walmart and Target both sell the original Thriller album on vinyl. The Target exclusive comes with a Thriller 40 slipmat, but the Walmart exclusive has a different cover. The original Thriller album is available as a hybrid SACD and an ultradisc one-step 180g LP via Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MoFi). The MoFi one-step is produced at RTI and is strictly limited to 40,000 numbered copies. It is derived from the original 1/2″ (or 30 IPS) analogue master tapes, which are converted to DSD 256 and then to analogue console and lathe.

The 40th anniversary of the best-selling album of all time is commemorated by the publication of Thriller 40. Last week, the immersive experience in Düsseldorf, Germany, marked the beginning of the pop-up events and global activations planned to celebrate the masterpiece created by the ‘King of Pop.’ Next up is the weekend-long immersive event beginning 21 November in New York.

The Michael Jackson channel will be available exclusively on SiriusXM and will run for a short time to honour the illustrious career of ‘The King of Pop,’ from his early work with The Jackson 5 through his solo work.

From 23 November until 22 December, The Michael Jackson channel, which features a Thriller special hosted by Steven Ivory, a friend of the Jackson family and a musicologist, will be broadcast on Limited Edition 2 (channel 502) and The Groove (channel 50).

Michael’s monumental achievement broke Grammy records, broke down musical barriers, and permanently altered the boundaries of pop music and music videos.

Since its debut on 30 November 1982, Michael Jackson’s Thriller has spent more than 500 weeks at the top of the Billboard album chart and has amassed over 100 million sales.

  • ‘Shaandaar:’ Not really!

    ‘Shaandaar:’ Not really!

Director Vikas Bahl has made a wedding movie of 146-minute duration. But, at the same time, he wants to be different from similar ‘wedding videos’ made in the past. After all, a comparison to the pioneer wedding movie, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun would be inevitable. To avoid this, Bahl tries to treat his film in a fairytale style. To this end, the film has been shot in a huge country side palace. The film even starts with Naseeruddin Shah narrating what is to follow a la ‘once upon a time’.

Sushma Seth is a billionaire tycoon occupying the palace with her family of three sons, a daughter-in-law and the older son Pankaj Kapur’s two daughters, Sanah Kapoor and Alia Bhatt; Alia being an adopted child. Pankaj and his two brothers as well as the rest of the family are totally under Sushma’s thumb. She rules the palace like her own domain and its inhabitants like her slaves.

Sushma has made it to the cover page of Forbes magazine but also sharing the cover with her is her relative to be, Sanjay Kapoor, who goes by the name of Fundwani. He is also a local tycoon. The wedding between Sanjay’s son and Sanah is actually a business deal for Sushma for her enterprise has gone broke and she expects this liaison with Sanjay’s family to give her bank balance some stability.

For Sanjay, being a Sindhi is the ultimate thing to be and all those who are successful, including Queen Elizabeth and Michael Jackson are, in fact, Sindhi. Sanjay wears a huge pendant with the dollar sign, which he says stands for Sindhi. Well, that is meant to be the comic content in the film.

Sushma wants the wedding to be a big tamasha and has appointed Shahid Kapoor to manage the event. Shahid has his first encounter with Pankaj and, soon enough, with Alia. Love happens at first sight. The rest of the film is about Shahid and Alia coming closer while Pankaj does his best to keep them part. All this while the rest of the wedding programme, including the sangeet, mehndi etc, takes place in the background. An attempt is made to make it funny by having Karan Johar in a cameo to compere Mehndi with Karan. Actually, there is nothing worthwhile happening in the film.

The film has no story to tell and tries to weave this wedding video with a series of gags (poor), song-and-dance numbers and useless nothings. The attempt to give the fairytale touch to the story does not work despite gimmicks like bringing in a frog called Ashok or even choreographing a song in a Dick Tracy kind of setting. Some secrets tumble out through the course of the story. Sanjay himself is on the verge of bankruptcy and expects to benefit with this wedding deal into Sushma’s family. Meanwhile, Alia is actually Pankaj’s own daughter born out of an affair he had while training as a pilot.

Scripting is very poor and patchy. Direction lacks imagination and the outcome is juvenile. The film has two hummable songs in Shaam saaandar…. and Nazdeekiyaan; a variety has been tried in song presentations to little effect. Editing needed to be crisper. Visually, efforts are made to give the film a pleasant look.

No actor has a defined role to make an impression. While Pankaj is a pleasure to watch, Shahid and Alia play the usual romantic pair, Sanjay sticks to buffoonery. Of the rest, Sanah does well.

Shaandaar caters to low IQ viewers which, at prevailing tickets rates, will be hard to find.

Producers: Anurag Kashyap, Vikramditya Motwane, Karan Johar, Madhu Mantena.

    Director: Vikas Bahl

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Pankaj Kapur, Sanjay Kapoor, Sanah Kapoor, Sushma Seth, Karan Johar (cameo).

Akshay’s fan club, which calls itself Team Akshay, decided to swing into action. Logistics were put into place and work had begun to make a special poster of Boss that would be the largest poster in the world which was completed in four months.

The largest poster in the world was achieved and unveiled at Little Gransden Airfield, Little Gransden, UK, on 3 October. Macro Arts (UK) did the manufacturing of the poster. Incidentally, Macro Arts is the same company that had made Michael Jackson’s poster.
