    Ambi MG Parameswaran re-elected as AAAI president

    MUMBAI: Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) has re-elected FCB Ulka Advertising executive director Ambi MG Parameswaran as president for the year 2015 – 2016.

     

    Additionally, Publicis Communications CEO-South Asia Nakul Chopra was also re-elected as vice president of the association.

     

    Parameswaran and Chopra were re-elected at AAAI’s annual general body meeting held on 31 July, 2015.

     

    The other members of the executive committee are as follows: Ashish Bhasin, CVL Srinivas, Ganesh Baliga, Jaideep Gandhi, Kunal Lalani, Nagesh Alai, Pranav Premnarayen, R Sridhar, Rana Barua, Sam Balsara, Srinivasan K Swamy, Tarun Rai and Vivek Srivastava.

     

    AAAI immediate past president Arvind Sharma will be the ex-officio member of the new AAAI executive committee.

    Rohit Ohri to join FCB Ulka as group chairman & CEO

    MUMBAI: Former Dentsu Asia Pacific CEO Rohit Ohri, who recently stepped down from his post, is all set to join FCB Ulka India as group chairman and CEO, effective January 2016.

     

    Ohri will be the successor to current CEO and group chairman Nagesh Alai who, after 25 years with FCB, is moving into a global role.

     

    Alai will assume the role of global vice-chairman at FCB, working on special initiatives for FCB worldwide CEO Carter Murray. With FCB’s newly restructured global company, Ohri will serve as a member of the global operating committee and report directly to Murray in New York. He will be one of the CEOs helping to guide the global company.

     

    “I want to thank Nagesh for dedicating his career to our FCB operations in India and for helping FCB Ulka become one of the strongest agencies in the country. I look forward to working with him on special global initiatives,” said Murray.

     

    “When Nagesh and the Board introduced me to Rohit as someone they felt fitted the culture of the company, I was struck by his passion for what we do, his focus on great work and strong client relationships, and his natural gravitas. If you add his track record in the industry, Rohit is someone whom I think will lead FCB Ulka forward with vision and energy, and keep the flame strong,” he added.

    An advertising person constantly strives to connect market research data to insights to come up with a winning campaign and who better to understand it than MG Parameswaran aka Ambi. The brain behind the transformation of Ulka Advertising into Draftfcb Ulka Group (now FCB Ulka), the former IIT-ian with a sharp wit and a way with words knows his subject at the back of his hand.

     

    The man, who has seven books to his credit in which he has penned down insights from his 35 year long working career in advertising, is the new president of Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI).

     

    The newly elected executive council will meet in next 10 days and as he takes charge for the year 2014-2015, Indiantelevision.com’s Meghna Sharma speaks to him on the key focus areas, awards and much more…

    What are the five things you will focus on as the new AAAI president?

     

    The new elected executive council will meet to deliberate on what should be the key initiatives, but from the top of my head, I think we need to move on the following points with speed:

     

    – AAAI will literally move to its new office in the next six months; this is a spacious office located mid-town. We will create facilities for our member agencies to use (for outstation agency members it can be a big boon).

     

    – AAAI will endeavour to work closely with IBF and ISA to ensure that the BARC deadlines are met and we have a world-class television measurement system in place soon.

     

    – AAAI will try to help member agencies face the challenges of the future; targeted seminars and workshop on the business of advertising will be a priority going forward; but first we will ascertain the demand for such programs.

     

    – Talent development at the grassroot level will be a priority; we will see if we can leverage the online medium to help reach top class training to smaller cities and towns of our country.

     

    – AAAI has played a vital role in the development of sister organisations; we will endeavour to build strong bridges to all the other industry organisations including ISA, IBF, INS, Ad Club, IAA, IMAI, Outdoor Association, Radio Association, Cinema Association etc.

     

    To sum it up, we will ensure that AAAI serves the purpose of all its member agencies, big and small, in big cities and in small cities and help them stay vibrant and profitable, play a more meaningful role in helping their clients and the society at large.

     

    In the next year, what will be the focus area – seminars or awards – for the organisation?

     

    Awards were never the be-all and end-all of the AAAI. Unfortunately, that gets the maximum media coverage. Many things that AAAI does, like helping member agencies collect outstanding amounts from clients or helping media organisations collect their rightful dues are not as exciting to write and read about. Further, many of these are really in the private domain. AAAI is an industry body set up the help ad agencies do their business better, serve clients better and do well. Towards this end AAAI has held workshops, created forums and also hosted award shows. We will continue to do all that.

     

    In the recent past, many objections have been raised regarding obscenity in advertisements. Do you think there is a need for stricter rules?

     

     All ads have to follow the norms laid down by society. AAAI was one of the founding partners of ASCI and I think ASCI, in the last few years has made its process a lot more efficient and effective. All the big advertisers have signed off that ASCI will have the last word. Similarly all media organisations have agreed to abide by the ASCI rulings.

     

    Obscenity can come at you from any category, undergarments, perfumes etc. If readers feel any specific ad needs to be pulled off they should complain to ASCI. The process is well laid out on its website.

     

     Having said that, let me reiterate, an ad has to be measured against what is prevalent in society at large. At one time no Hindi movie showed a man and a woman kissing. That has become a norm today, and some heroes / heroines are vying to set new records. The society is also changing rapidly enabled by the rampant spread of digital medium. So our standards for measuring ads should also become more flexible. What was obscene 10 years ago may not be seen as obscene today. One needs to factor in the variable that consumers are not morons; they do see ads with a tinted pair of spectacles, especially ads that promise miraculous results, like deos.

     

    Finally, it is ASCI’s turf to decide what they think is permissible and what is not.

     

    Also, how do you plan to get back the lost glory of Indian awards?

     

    Awards play a useful purpose to motivate young people to stay engaged in the advertising industry. There is nothing to beat the joy of receiving an award in front of your industry peers. AAAI will work closely with Ad Club to ensure that we have a transparent mechanism in the jury process. Efforts will be made to ensure all the key agencies participate in the Awards. Please remember the Abby Awards belongs to Ad Club and has a wonderful history backing it. That will not be allowed to fade away.

    MUMBAI:  In his three-decade-long career, chemical engineer-turned-adman MG ‘Ambi’ Parameswaran has handled a wealth of assignments across advertising, marketing and sales. The brain behind the transformation of Ulka Advertising into Draftfcb Ulka Group, this former IIT-ian not only knows his subject like the back of his hand, he has a sharp wit and a way with words to boot.

     

    Ambi, who has a slew of articles and six books on advertising and brands to his credit, has just finished penning his seventh book titled For God’s Sake – An Adman on the Business of Religion slated to hit stands next week. He spoke to indiantelevision.com about his new book and what he does best – writing and advertising…

     

    Why did you choose such a topic?

    I did my PhD on Religiousity and Consumer Behaviour from Mumbai University and it took close to five years of research to file my thesis. In so doing, I read over 500 books and articles on the subject and thought it was an interesting topic. Besides, not much had been written on religion and consumer behaviour. So, I thought of converting my thesis into a book which people could use and appreciate.

     

    What inspired you to write this book?

    The fact that when I write, I learn, is one big inspiration for me. Secondly, one is adding in some way to the knowledge depository of the country. Unfortunately in India, we are very possessive about knowledge and information, so my books are all about sharing whatever little I know with people who are interested in knowing more.

     

    How different is this book from your previous ones?

    I have written several books on advertising, a couple of books on branding, and a book on the Indian consumer. This book cannot be slotted into advertising or branding categories because it is more of a neutral book which is more about business, religion and consumers. There is a lot of reference to advertising in the book, and there is also a lot of reference to a lot of business ideas that have emerged in the book. Also, there are a lot of consumer segmentation issues that I have raised in the book.

     

    Whom are you targeting with this book?

    It would be the 28 or 29-year-old executive who wants to understand a little more about the Indian consumer or the 31-year-old businessman who wants a new idea for a business.

     

    This is your seventh book. What motivates you to write?

    Well, I have always wondered why there aren’t enough books on Indian consumers and Indian brands. From a historical perspective, the first person to really write a book on branding in the Indian context was Subroto Sengupta of Clarion Advertising. He was also my professor at IIM Calcutta and after him, for many a year, no one really wrote on Indian brands or advertising.

     

    My first book was published in 1999 and since then, we have had a lot of people like Santosh Desai, Rama Bijapurkar, Harish Bhatt and Anand Halve writing interesting books on such topics. It is a good and healthy thing that a lot of practising executives are putting down their knowledge and experience into books.

     

    Just how easy or difficult is it to put all this into a book? In your case, are you usually content once you are done with the final draft?

     

    I don’t think you can capture all the things you know in just one book because one is always reading and observing things all the time. For me, writing a book is also a learning process, so when I write a book, I read a lot more.  Even before you get down to writing the first paragraph, you have read and learnt so much. This book, for instance, took six months of writing, but for almost three years, I was researching and reading. So, it is a learning process and after you finish writing a book, one always thinks that you could have added something more. Overall, I’m happy the way the book has come out. It is very racy and it’s easy to read. That was my objective; it is in fact much lighter to read as compared to my previous books. It was planned!

     

    Which is your favourite book on advertising, and why?

    There are many books, so it is difficult to name any one. There are books on branding and advertising globally, and in India too, we are seeing some very good books.

     

    Do you feel youngsters today read books or are influenced by them?

    There is still a very significant section of the youth which reads books. If you look at what Amish Tripathi has been able to achieve, it is commendable. He is a guy who has brought a million new readers to the English books’ market. His books cut across age groups and that is amazing.

     

    Coming to advertising, do you think advertisers are stereotypical in their portrayal of characters, be it gender or religion-wise?

    No, I don’t think there is any stereotyping. Advertisers and advertising agencies tend to borrow from the popular culture around them. And they are normally ahead of the curve. That is why in the book, there is a chapter on ‘The mystery of the missing bindi’ and you will see advertisers are showing lesser and lesser women wearing a bindi because not wearing one is perceived as a symbol of modernity, which wasn’t the case some 20 years ago. However that doesn’t mean women aren’t wearing bindis. You will still see a lot of women wearing them. But the modernity has been picked up and used by advertisers.

    It will be available with e-book merchants, both as hardcover and as an e-book. It will also be available at all bookstores.

     

    Last but not the least, will we see another book from you?

    Not yet, maybe something after two years…
