    Katie Holmes to be part of The Giver

    Mumbai: Katie Holmes has finalised a deal to be a part of ‘The Giver’, a drama from the Weinstein Company and Walden Media. The movie is directed by Phillip Noyce.

     

    Brenton Thwaites plays the lead role in the movie that talks about a world where there is no sickness, racism or conflict.

     

    Thwaites plays the role of a young boy who is selected for his life service as Receiver of Memories with ‘The giver’ (Jeff Bridges) who is an old man teaching the boy to use his unique gifts of the senses.

     

    Meryl Streep plays the society’s chief elder, an authoritarian woman who assigns young kids tasks to do.  Holmes will be playing the mother of Thwaites. Her role is that of a strict obeyer of the rules of the society that can be named as an antiseptic society.

     

    Michael Mitnick has scripted the adaptation and will be shot in South Africa.
    The movie is eying a budget of around $25 million.

    MUMBAI: The famous Devil Wears Prada actress will be playing Chief Elder in the film – The Giver. The movie is an adaptation of the Lois Lowry novel of the same name that will be directed by Phil Noyce.

    A co-production between the Weinstein Company and Walden media, it will start shooting in South Africa in eight weeks. Streep will play the Elder, who is the authoritarian in charge of keeping order in a society that seems utopian. The trouble begins when the man who receives the ‘memories of life‘ brings out a rebel in him.

    The book had won the Newbery medal in 1994. The movie is being produced by Bridges and Nikki Silver. Streep is repped by CAA.

    MUMBAI: Hollywood‘s biggest night, The Oscars, will feature special appearances by Academy Award winner Charlize Theron, Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Daniel Radcliffe at the upcoming Awards ceremony this month.

    Telecast producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said, “We are quite excited to have Charlize, Chan, Joe and Dan join us on the show. We are happy to feature them as special guests in our production.”

    This will be Gordon-Levitt, Radcliffe and Tatum‘s first time appearing on the Oscar show.

    They join a stellar list of previously announced Oscar presenters including ‘The Avengers‘ cast members Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo; returning 2011 Oscar winners Jean Dujardin, Christopher Plummer, Octavia Spencer and Meryl Streep; co-stars Mark Wahlberg and Ted; and musical performers including Adele, Norah Jones and Barbra Streisand.

    MUMBAI: Noted director Quentin Tarantino wants to work with superstar Johnny Depp. The 49-year-old director, who has done films like Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Kill Bil‘, said that Depp features on his wish list of actors that he would love to work with, it is reported.
    "We would love to work together. We have talked about it for years. Not that we get together and talk about it for years, but from time to time. We‘re obviously fans of each other. It just needs to be the right character.
    I just need to write the right character that I think Johnny would be the right guy to do it with. And if he agrees, then we‘ll do it. And then it‘ll be magical. I haven‘t written the perfect character for him as of yet but maybe someday I will," the director has been quoted to have said.
    The Django Unchained helmer is also keen to work with Meryl Streep as well as Michael Caine.

    MUMBAI: Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts will star in the film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play August: Osage County.


    The John Wells directed film, based on the play written by Tracy Letts, follows the women of a family whose lives have splintered in many directions until a crisis bring them back to their childhood home and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them, the Hollywood Reporter said.
     
    Streep, who has endeared herself by playing Britains strong lady Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady will play the pill-popping matriarch Violet Weston. On the other hand, Roberts will play her daughter Barbara.


    Streep is currently in the best actress Oscar race for The Iron Lady.

    MUMBAI: Academy award winner Meryl Streep will be awarded an Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival on February 14.
     
    This will be followed by a screening of her latest work The Iron Lady in which she portrays Great Britain’s former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.


    Streep who has appeared in over 40 films has received 16 nominations for the Academy awards (two wins) and 18 Golden Globe nominations and seven wins.
     
    “We are delighted to be able to award the Honorary Golden Bear to such a terrific artist and world star. Meryl Streep is a brilliant, versatile performer who moves with ease between dramatic and comedic roles,” Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick has been quoted to have said.


    Meryl Streep won her first Oscar for the divorce drama Kramer vs. Kramer and the second for her performance in Sophie’s Choice. Recently, she received a Golden Globe nomination for her role as Margaret Thatcher in the upcoming film The Iron Lady.

    Veteran film director Robert Altman dies

    MUMBAI: Veteran filmmaker Robert Altman who influenced film narrative with classics like Nashville and Short Cuts has passed away. He was 81 years old and died in a Los Angeles hospital.

    Altman was known for his experimental style. One of his unique traits including his last film released a few monthsd back A Prairie Home Companion was overlapping dialogue. Another trait was having multiple storylines skillfyully interwoven into one another with a large ensemble cast. The subjects varied. There was Nashville which looked at country music. Short Cuts dealt with life in Los Angeles. Gosford Park was a classy British film about a murder and secrets as well as class conflict. The one challenge in these films particularly Gosford Park is that the viewer has to pay careful attention.

    Altman like Martin Scorcese never won an Oscar. However he was given a lifetime achievement Oscar at this year’s ceremony by Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin who both star in A Prarie Home Companion.

    Tommy Lee Jones who also starred in that film says that Altman was very good at letting actors think that they had more control than they actually did.

    ‘Go, Diego, Go!’ slated to air in October on Nick Jr

    MUMBAI: The kids’ channel Nickelodeon has ordered 20 new episodes of the second season of Go, Diego, Go!. Nick Jr. is a specially designed programming block airing on Nickelodeon has commenced production activity of the show.

    The second season of Go, Diego, Go! is slated to kick off in October 2006.

    According to an official release, on the heels of its hugely successful cousin Dora the Explorer, Go, Diego, Go! made its Nick Jr. debut in September 2005, and has quickly become the number one preschool show on all of commercial TV.

    Series star Jake T. Austin returns for season two as the voice of rough- and-tumble animal rescuer Diego. Jake can also be seen this July in the animated feature film The Ant Bully with Julia Roberts, Nicolas Cage and Meryl Streep. Academy Award-nominated actress Rosie Perez also returns as the voice of “Click” the Camera.

    “Diego is an irresistible action hero with a heart, and we are thrilled he has followed in his cousin Dora’s footsteps to become the number one TV choice among preschoolers,” said Nickelodeon preschool television executive creative director Brown Johnson. “We are excited to be working with Chris Gifford and Valerie Walsh on a new season of Diego’s animal rescue adventures.”

    Go Diego Go! was created and is produced by Chris Gifford and Valerie Walsh, the team behind the phenomenal hit show Dora the Explorer.
