IFP rings in fifteen years of creativity and culture

MUMBAI: Fifteen and fabulous! India Film Project (IFP) is all set to celebrate its milestone 15th edition, returning to Mumbai’s iconic Mehboob Studios on 29 and 30 November for a weekend bursting with stories, art, and unfiltered creativity.

What started as a spark between a few passionate creators has now grown into the world’s largest festival celebrating creativity x culture, a global platform where filmmakers, writers, designers, musicians, and dreamers come together to create, collaborate and reimagine storytelling.

This year’s line-up is nothing short of stellar. The jury features cinematic heavyweights and creative icons including Dibakar Banerjee, Sheeba Chaddha, Hariharan, Bilal Siddiqi, Santhy Balachandran, Ravi Jadhav, Kanu Behl, Mukesh Chhabra, and Gajesh Mitkari, among others.

At the festival’s heart lie the 50 hour creative challenges, IFP’s signature event where imagination meets the ticking clock. From filmmaking and music to design, photography, writing, and performing arts, this year’s challenges drew over 40,000 participants from 350 cities across 23 countries, a testament to IFP’s ever-growing creative tribe.

Reflecting on the milestone, IFP founder Ritam Bhatnagar shared, “What began as a small dormitory idea is now one of the world’s biggest celebrations of creativity. Fifteen years later, IFP continues to be that space where creative people come together, experiment, and grow.”

For filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee, being part of the jury felt like coming full circle. “Storytelling thrives on curiosity, and that’s what IFP embodies. Fifteen years in, it still surprises and inspires.”

Echoing the sentiment, Sheeba Chaddha added, “There’s a rare joy in being part of IFP. It’s a space that lets artists express freely and evolve without boundaries.”

Over the years, IFP has hosted over 1.2 lakh creators, 1400 speakers, and creative legends like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mira Nair, Vicky Kaushal, and Javed Akhtar, proving that it’s not just a festival, but a movement.

This November, IFP once again promises two unforgettable days where every idea, big or small, finds its spotlight. So if creativity runs in your veins, Mehboob Studios is the place to be.

  • National Film Museum to finally open next week in Mumbai

National Film Museum to finally open next week in Mumbai

NEW DELHI: The long-in-the-making National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC) showcasing India’s rich film heritage over the past 100 years will finally open in Mumbai next week to coincide with the Mumbai International Film Festival for shorts, documentaries and animation films.

Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister Manish Tewari will be the chief guest at the opening of the Festival on 3 February.

“As the Indian cinema enters a new century, the national museum of Indian cinema coming up in Mumbai is a small tribute of the Ministry to the great film heritage of India. We have also launched a Rs-600 crore National Film Heritage Mission to digitise best of Indian cinematic works and archive them for the benefit of future generations,” said Tewari recently while outlining various steps taken by the government to promote cinema in India.

The Minister also reviewed the preparations for the museum’s inauguration with Films Division officials and experts. The inauguration will coincide with the Mumbai International Film Festival for short, documentary and animation films that commences on 3 February.

The National Museum of Indian Cinema is situated in the 6,000 square-foot Gulshan Mahal – a heritage building on Pedder Road in South Mumbai. Gulshan Mahal’s interiors have been refurbished to house an interactive walkthrough down cinema’s memory lane. It is part of a larger complex of 50,000 sqft that will come up in phases.

The museum will be a ready-reckoner of the history of Indian cinema showcasing technological aspects of production and screening of films, as well as its social aspects during the past 100 years. Through its interactive galleries, it will trace the evolution of celluloid from the Lumiere Brothers, Raja Harishchandra onwards, and showcase Indian cinema in three stages – silent era, golden era and the modern era. It will portray the footsteps taken by Indian cinema, from the period of silent films to the studio period, and then recreate the times when stars and mega stars dominated the silver screen.

An Advisory Committee headed by renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal has guided the Films Division in establishing the museum.

Visitors can also watch clips of old classics on a number of monitors or listen to rare film music from the past. There is also an interesting collection of posters of landmark movies from across India. A section on regional cinema is also on display.

Many famous studios of yesteryears like Mehboob Studios, RK Studios and Prasad Studios have donated equipment to the museum. Some private collectors too have come forward to donate items. The Films Division, which was set up in 1941, to produce short films to disseminate information during war time, has also displayed old Eymo and Mitchel cameras, recording equipment etc. Also of interest are some older instruments that created an illusion of movement, which were precursor to the movie camera.

NMIC has been curated by the National Council of Science Museums, Kolkata, under the Ministry of Culture, which manages 55 various kinds of museums in the country.

  • Mumbai HC relief for Sanjay Gupta

Mumbai HC relief for Sanjay Gupta

MUMBAI: In a case of cheating and forgery against filmmaker Sanjay Gupta for allegedly copying the letterhead of the Mumbai Police Commissioner registered by the Mumbai police, the Bombay High Court has granted him anticipatory bail against a bond of Rs 10,000. Earlier, the Sessions Court had rejected anticipatory bail for Gupta.

Soon after, Gupta approached the HC for justice. Justice A V Nirgude, who was officiating in the matter, said in his order: “This is an innovative invitation, that’s it. The police officers who registered the offence have lost their sense of humour,” he observed.

It was alleged that Gupta Wadala carried the rubber stamp of the Mumbai Police that was used on invites sent out for the unveiling of his film Shootout At Wadala for a press conference at Mehboob Studios last week.

The court observed that no intention to commit fraud was disclosed by the police in the case. The police could not prove any wrongful gain or loss on part of the producers of the movie, the court remarked.

However, additional public prosecutor Rajeshree Gadhvi said that the invitation was misleading and the producers had not taken prior permission from the CP to issue it using the seal of his office.

Shootout at Wadala, based on the first-ever registered encounter by Mumbai police who shot dead gangster Manya Surve at Wadala in 1990s, is being produced by Balaji Motion Pictures along with Gupta’s White Feather Films. The film stars Anil Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, John Abraham and Tusshar Kapoor.
