Fork Media picks equity in Wi-Fi ad network Spid

NEW DELHI: Ad tech company Fork Media has invested in Wi-Fi ad network Spid Info Media Pvt. Ltd to leverage Spid’s technology for advertisers and publishers by offering them one of the largest audience platforms, targeting on-the-go consumers.

The partnership is in line with Fork’s vision of broadening its core offerings.

Spid currently has a bouquet of over 1,200 locations including all major airports, QSRs like McDonalds, KFC, Starbucks, and Costa Coffee, malls and other retail locations.

According to the company, his number is rapidly growing as it partners with ISPs and telecom providers to help monetise inventory. Fork Media aims to use Spid’s platform to leverage the locational behavior of consumers and target them for relevant advertising.

Fork Media CEO Samar Verma said, “Having Spid as a part of the Fork Media group is a strategic move for us. We see Wi-Fi as an alternative eco-system – a parallel economy, that’s growing rapidly. With the onset of 4G, a lot of telecom players are investing in Wi-Fi infrastructure to offset the costs involved in setting up 4G. Additionally, the Wi-Fi ecosystem takes location targeting to the next level by not only delivering relevant content to the consumer in and around a certain location, but also offering destination targeting. We are steering Fork Media to be less device-centric and more consumer-centric in our ad solutions. Therefore, this is an extremely important link in the chain for us in the consumer’s journey.”

The acquisition of equity in Spid is a part of Fork Media’s larger expansion plans. It had recently made its foray into international markets with the launch of its operations in Dubai – targeting the GCC region. Through its tie-up with Spid, the company is now better equipped to provide well-timed offers that consumers are seeking. Fork Media is now poised to tap the immense opportunity that exists in the digital marketing space in India.

Spid CEO Harsh Nagpal said, “Our partnership with Fork Media is a marriage of strengths. Fork’s reach and expertise in business development will enable us to leverage this unique proposition, further enabling brands to reach out to relevant audiences. With Samar and the entire Fork team’s collective experience and expertise, we foresee Spid deriving maximum value and growing manifold.”

  • A ‘Milestone’ Journey…

    A ‘Milestone’ Journey…

GOA: It is myth that in GoaFest it is only the glamorous agencies which participate. Over the last two years, it can be noted that many new specialised agencies have taken home Abbys for impressive pieces of advertising. Among this set of newbie winners is Milestone Brandcom.

Indiantelevision.com asked Milestone Brandcom MD Nabendu Bhattacharyya how it feels to sweep away Abbys amongst many other mainline agencies.

Take a look at what he had to say…

“Looking back at our four year journey in the dynamic industry that we call advertising, I am filled with pride at Milestone Brandcom’s journey and success. Yesterday at the GoaFest, we won five out of the seven awards that we were shortlisted for and placed third on the table, competing with industry stalwarts. It is a very big moment for us at Milestone Brandcom and we hope to accomplish much more.

I grew up in Kolkata, surrounded by art, football and culture but my first love was always advertising. Two of my brothers were creative directors in advertising agencies so naturally I set the bar high for myself. In 1993, I kick started my career as a summer trainee at Ulka when advertising was just coming into its own. It was obvious that the possibilities in Indian advertising were endless and largely unexplored. I went on to leave my family and girlfriend who later became my wife behind in Kolkata to work at Selvel’s Delhi office where I had my first brush with the OOH industry. After five years at the company, I decided to move on to Emirates Neon in Dubai, hoping to learn more. As I never really fell in love with Dubai, I returned to join Mudra’s JV with Vertigo and a year later I joined Ogilvy in 1999 where the idea of Milestone Brandcom was conceived.

Starting as a senior consultant, my journey at Ogilvy has made me who I am today and has had a considerable effect on Milestone Brandcom’s journey as well. After 10 eventful years at Ogilvy and over 16 years in the industry, I decided to start Milestone Brandcom with four colleagues after the bottom line started to restrain our creativity. Today, we at Milestone Brandcom put creativity and delivery above everything else and the success of our campaigns stand testament to that.

We started with just 25 passionate employees in six offices, our head quarters being a tiny space in Andheri. We had a few clients and many skeptics. We wanted to change industry standards, we wanted to weed out the hurdles that came along with corporate culture and we wanted to deliver. Due to our persistence and knowledge, we quickly went on to win some of the biggest OOH accounts such as Colors, McDonalds, Binani Cement, Axis Bank, Dish TV, Tanishq and Tata Docomo within six months. Through strategic planning, innovative technology and creative solutions, Milestone Brandcom has completely transformed the outdoor landscape to bring about a forward looking, healthy and positive outlook towards the industry.

As I write this, Milestone Brandcom is a game-changer in the industry that employs over 200 employees with offices/representatives in 42 cities in the country and over 100 active brands. The story of the underdog doesn’t end there. We are also the largest OOH agency in India.

I hope we add many more ‘milestones’ in our journey ahead…”

  • IAMAI talks digital

    IAMAI talks digital

MUMBAI: It’s time to take conversations on digital to the next level believes CMOs. At the 10th marketing conclave hosted by Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) the point of discussions revolved around how brands are and should revise digital business and promotional strategies.

While it is understood that for brands today ‘digital’ is a must have platform in its media mix; marketers are willing to go beyond the traditional line of communication. It is interesting to note how CMOs are thinking digital to push business as not just another medium of promotion, but are now ready to revise digital strategies too.

Today, traditional advertisements are created thinking whether or not it would be shared online. Word-of-mouth now happens more on digital platforms like social and mobile.

According to Taj Group’s director internet marketing Namrita Sehgal, the change will begin when marketers start thinking digital. “Humanising communication and offering personalised experiences is what brands need to start doing on digital. Consumers should be spoilt for choices because today there are multiple windows to cater to.”

There will always be price parity and someone will always give you that extra per cent off believes Pinstrom founder Mahesh Murthy.

Different brand categories have different needs to take care of on digital but the bottom line of every move needs to revolve around the engagement factor. Vodafone Group head- marketing Vodafone Solutions- Emerging Markets advices, “Brands shouldn’t shy away from the changing dynamics of communication.”

MoneyControl.com chief operating officer Rubeena Singh thinks this challenge comes from the ever changing consumer need. Brands need to start looking at integration with more seriousness; if the plan is to make a mark. Valuefirst chief executive officer, Vishwadeep Bajaj is of the opinion that the need of the hour is to make content contextual. On the other hand, Puma India’s head-marketing Isaac John, thinks that brands should focus on putting across content to the point and not bombard them. “The art of storytelling needs to be crafted well if brands want to make a mark on digital too,” added John.

For Sehgal, spotting loyal consumers and building communities on digital media is on his to-do list for the days to come. Singh too believes that content marketing is the way to go. Marketers have started looking at roping in the right talent to enhance digital business and communication. It can also be observed that SMEs are getting it right on digital. For these scale of businesses digital has been like a game changer. Mass brands are impressed by the way these small businesses are hitting the right cord on digital.

To create digital first strategies, brands over time have also transformed themselves to suit the current screen to screen era. McDonalds director marketing & PR Rameet Arora emphasises on the point that today a customer wants everything with just one click of a mouse. “For instance, if a person wants to know how many calories does a type of burger has, we at McDonalds have to give him that. Brands have to make sure that all the criteria’s of a customer’s needs are fulfilled.”

The CMOs feel that the digital model has helped smaller brands to compete and grow as well. Marketing Unplugged CEO Suman Srivastava pointed out the Zomato model.

MTV India digital head Ekalavya Bhattacharya went on say that the need today is not only to get a viewer on board but to also know his/her preference and work according to that so he/she comes to the medium again and again. “If a person listens to a particular kind of a song say on the website or on our app then we should be equipped enough to know that he/she needs to be contacted when say a musician of his/her choice plays in the city.”

    An idealist thought indeed.

It is impressive to see how serious marketers are towards digital. For marketers the road ahead on digital looks easy to discover because the communication has definitely gone to the next level. The only thing that might come as a hurdle is the challenge to decode big data smartly and get focused.
