Brands take centre stage at Mipcom Cannes 2025

PARIS: Brand money is flooding into television. At Mipcom Cannes  this month, the world’s largest TV market is rolling out the red carpet for corporate storytellers with the first international edition of BrandStorytelling, a summit that has spent a decade building its reputation at Sundance.

The two half-day event on 13 and 14 October brings together an unlikely crowd: global brands like Ancestry and Indeed, creative agencies including Dentsu and McCann, and heavyweight studios such as Banijay, Fremantle and BBC StoryWorks. Their mission is to turn corporate cash into compelling content—and to do deals that make it happen.

Rick Parkhill, the producer and media entrepreneur who founded BrandStorytelling, reckons the sector has come of age. “Brands are increasingly behind some of the biggest stories on our screens globally,” he says. The event’s expansion from Park City to the French Riviera suggests he’s onto something.

Among the speakers are Doug Scott, founder of Unxnown and an alumnus of Endeavour and Ogilvy, and Kim Miller Olko, global chief marketing officer at Toys”R”Us and president of its in-house studio. Representatives from over 20 organisations will take the stage, from the Branded Content Marketing Association to entertainment giants like UTA.

Mipcom Cannes director Lucy Smith says the “overwhelming response” from the industry confirmed the appetite for a dedicated brand-content forum. The summit promises to unlock new funding streams and co-production opportunities at a time when traditional television budgets are under pressure and brands are hunting for more sophisticated ways to reach audiences.

The event, sponsored by Fell + Co., Storybones Media and IPG Mediabrands Entertainment is part of Mipcom’s broader embrace of the creator economy. Last year’s market drew over 10,500 delegates from more than 100 countries—a captive audience for anyone peddling the promise of brand-funded programming.

TBWA India names Rohit Mukherjee executive creative director in Gurgaon

MUMBAI: TBWA India has hired Rohit Mukherjee as executive creative director at its Gurgaon office, tasking him with sharpening the agency’s disruption philosophy and raising the creative bar for clients.

Mukherjee, who brings close to 20 years in advertising, joins from Dentsu Creative Isobar where he rose to group executive creative director, leading integrated, digital-first campaigns for major Indian brands. He began his career with an internship at Rediffusion Y&R and went on to stints at Publicis, Mccann, DDB Mudra and Bates, shaping campaigns for Airtel, Nestlé, Colgate-Palmolive, Dabur, Diageo and Kia Motors. Among his best-known works is Colgate’s “Kya aapke toothpaste mein namak hai?” platform.

TBWA India, chief creative experience officer, Russell Barrett called Mukherjee “an accomplished creative individual with a great pedigree of ideas and executions,” adding that he was “just the right kind of pirate to lead and inspire the office forward.”

For his part, Mukherjee said he relished the agency’s disruption credo. “To create in any field, you need to disrupt. The very fact that for tbwa, disruption is its raison d’être is provocation enough for any creative,” he noted.

  • Sebi probe against Zeel, Chandra & Goenka to continue; fresh show cause notice to be issued

Sebi probe against Zeel, Chandra & Goenka to continue; fresh show cause notice to be issued

MUMBAI: The regulatory investigation against  the father-son duo of Subhash Chandra and Punit Goenka seems to be never ending.

Securities watchdog the Securities Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on 2 January said that it will be filing a fresh show cause notice (SCN) against the two and will continue its investigation into listing guidelines violations by Chandra and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (Zeel). This was spelt out in the  adjudication order issued by adjudicating officer (AO) Amit Kapoor on 2 January 2025.

In the order Kapoor stated  “that the contents of the SCN dated 6 July 2022 issued by the AO will also be incorporated in the SCN to be issued in the instant matter.”

Zeel and its promoters are under Sebi investigation for not following Listing Obligations & Disclosure Requirements (LODR) 2015. The regulator had issued a show cause notice against them on 6 July 2022.

Both Zeel and Punit Goenka had filed settlement claims to settle the adjudication proceedings. Sebi normally allows entities against whom investigations have been initiated to apply for settlement by paying a certain fee or complying with the rules that the watchdog lays out.

Their application was rejected by a panel of whole time Sebi members who also instructed it to continue with the investigation.

Kapoor’s  adjudication order  states that once the investigation into the instant matter is complete, the competent authority should proceed against Zeel, Chandra, and Goenka under section 11B of the Sebi Act 1992. (Section 11B gives Sebi the powers to levy penalties. Penalties can vary from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1 crore or to Rs 25 crore or 10 years in prison or both depending under which section of the Sebi Act or Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act, 1956 they are being levied)

Kapoor’s order further states that the allegations contained in the SCN  of 6 July 2022 are to be subsumed with the findings of the further investigation carried out by Sebi in the instant matter.

“Accordingly, the contents of the SCN dated July 06, 2022 issued by the AO including the examination report and all the relied upon documents will be treated as integral part of the further investigation report by Sebi in the matter of Zeel. The contents of the SCN dated 6 July 2022 issued by  the AO to Zeel, Chandra and Goenka  will also be incorporated in the SCN to be issued in the instant matter. The instant AO proceedings would be dropped against the three, ” he further states in his order.
