Livon’s digital play to connect with today’s consumers

MUMBAI: Indian consumer goods company Marico has its consumers spread across the country and a majority of them come from the smaller section of society. The homegrown company has a wide portfolio of products including Set Wet Gel, Parachute coconut oil, Nihar oil, Saffola and Livon.

It was at the recently concluded The Advertising Club’s maiden edition of D-CODE where Marico CMO Anuradha Aggarwal gave insights about how important digital is for brands in general and how it helped in shaping Marico’s communication. She listed out three key tips to crack the digital code.

She said that anybody who claims they know digital, is kidding themselves and you! “We as an industry haven’t been able to crack the digital code yet and are still trying to understand it and learn as we go about it as the digital ecosystem is changing every minute.”

Marico is a small brand, as compared to the Amazon and Netflix of the world, which sells parachute oil, Nihar oil in the deep rural pockets of India. Aggarwal said that while everyone is busy watching Amazon or on Facebook, Marico is trying to sell products to15-year-old girls and 50-year-old women sitting in deep rural pockets of India.

While the brand is relatively small and its core consumers aren’t digital rich, how do they connect with them on digital is a hefty challenge for Marico. We are in a digital world where brands are trying to seek attention from the consumers. They are on an endeavour to seek out the truth in this hyper-complex digital world.

Every marketer around the globe swears by the AIDA (Awareness, Interest, Desire, Action) model and has probably learnt it in the marketing school. AIDA is an advertising effect model that describes the effect of advertising media. The sales process should be sustainably optimised on the basis of this model. Aggarwal, however, believes that the traditional model of AIDA isn’t applicable anymore. The purchase journey doesn’t start with awareness about the product; it may start with a desire or interest.

Her first key tip to crack the digital code is to seed your brand idea in the mind of the consumers. Korean pop inspired Marico to implement the same strategy for one of its brands-Livon in India. The brand didn’t have the money, scale and awareness and it was a strenuous task to get the word about the product on digital. “It’s a challenge for us to connect with the digital consumers when we don’t own the medium or are active on it,” she added.

The penetration in the serum category was static between 2006-2016 and there was no new entrant in the market. This was a huge opportunity for the brand to create awareness about its product. Her second tip is to be personal where brands need to do local targeting and create personalised ads. Can you imagine a consumer being excited about applying serum on their hair? The team didn’t know what this activation will generate.

Taking a leap of faith, Marico conducted college activation for Livon across India to target the youth and young teenagers. They made 100 brand ambassadors across colleges in India and engaged real time in transforming their hair. The word of mouth helped Livon in marketing and shot up its sales in a month’s time. The third and most important of all is to just let go once you’ve executed the campaign and trust in your audience to come back to you.

On a concluding note, Agarwal said that brands have to ditch the target audience and embrace the audience at large. Only then will they be able to tap a larger audience which will eventually lead to higher revenues and sales.

  • Nihar Naturals celebrates progressive, strong women

Nihar Naturals celebrates progressive, strong women

MUMBAI: Women today are free-spirited, courageous and strong, irrespective of their age and economic backgrounds. Nihar Naturals coconut hair oil, a market leader in eastern India, has unveiled its latest campaign, “Akai Aiksho” to highlight the power and strength of the modern woman. The brand caters to progressive Indian women and has always celebrated their innate strengths and successes through all its communication.

The campaign is a colloquial Bangla phrase which means “One is equal to hundred” and is aptly captured in the TVC through the spirit of modern Indian women who are independent, powerful and self-sufficient. Nihar Naturals has always championed a progressive and modern depiction of women and continues to do so through this new campaign conceptualised and created by BBH India. It features Nihar Naturals’ long-term brand ambassador, Vidya Balan and drives a strong message celebrating the essence of womanhood.

The TVC depicts stories of three women demonstrating strength in their daily lives – the strength to achieve, to show compassion and nurture and the strength to protect. It celebrates women through a symbolic manifestation of Goddess Durga, who is hailed for her virtues beyond the realms of religion, social or economic divide. Nihar Naturals embodies this same spirit of Akai Aiksho.

Marico chief marketing officer Anuradha Aggarwal says, “Over the years, Nihar Naturals through its campaigns has aimed to break all stereotypes against women and celebrated their courage and strength. Through this new campaign, the brand builds on this core belief to say that every woman is Akai Aiksho – She alone is enough to handle all the vicissitudes in life. Nihar Naturals a nourishing coconut hair oil enriched with the goodness of methi, promises strong hair for this strong woman of today.”

BBH creative director of art Shruti Das adds, “Women have always had the inner strength that makes them capable of doing anything. The idea is brought alive through small stories of strength displayed by women in their everyday lives and through the visual symbolism of these regular women juxtaposed as an avatar of Goddess Durga, the epitome of strength in a woman. Even the music is created using a contemporary rendition of a famous Durga chant, thus leaving the woman with a feeling of empowerment.”

Saffola launches campaign to beat food cravings

MUMBAI: WATConsult, the digital and social media agency from Dentsu Aegis Network, and Marico’s Saffola, launched a new campaign for its newly introduced offering, Saffola Active Slimming Nutri-Shake, titled ‘Beat The Crave’.

The campaign is a first-ever audio-driven digital initiative that aims to distract the audience from unhealthy food cravings.

The campaign undertakes an array of social media activities along with a microsite that has been created for users to visit and distract themselves whenever their craving strikes, thus enabling them to maintain their diet plan. The microsite will have multiple audio skits; also available on WhatsApp to encourage people attain their fitness goals. While each audio skit is crafted to help people distract from their cravings, it also allows them to learn the psyche behind these cravings and provides solutions to avoid them.

Marico chief operating officer Sanjay Mishra says, “In line with Marico’s commitment to support a healthy lifestyle, we have teamed up with WATConsult and created a digital buddy which helps distract people from unhealthy food cravings in a fun way. These cravings just add inches to the waist derailing the efforts toward slimming. So, the digital audio buddy will work by distracting the user from any food craving and support consumers to find the right alternative healthy options”.

The campaign also features several personalities from different walks of life who have been roped in to join the ‘Beat the Crave’ way. Healthy alternative recipes are also on offer to beat those cravings.

WATConsult founder and CEO Rajiv Dingra adds, “Anyone trying to lose weight and get in a better lifestyle/better shape has to first and foremost deal with the very human problem of craving. But if you can distract your mind for around three minutes, you can survive a craving incident. With this insight and to avoid facing a conflict between the love for junk food vs the weight loss goals, we created a digital friend who helps you beat the craving.”

  • Livon extends salon-in-purse proposition in latest campaign

Livon extends salon-in-purse proposition in latest campaign

MUMBAI: Marico Limited’s Livon Serum has launched its latest ad film, an extension of its campaign thought – Salon Nahin Livon.

The brand caters to the young girl who always strives to look her fabulous best and being ‘selfie ready’ is of utmost importance to her. In a fast-paced life of impromptu plans and unplanned outings, she wishes to have that luscious flowing hair without entering a salon. Taking cognizance of this, Livon Serum aims to instantly deliver an overall spectacular look with salon-finish hair – free of fizz and ultra-glossy, on demand.

The tongue-in-cheek TVC depicts two girls seated in a library, who have to go for a last minute outing planned by their friends. Momentarily excited, one of them expresses dismay due to her frizzy hair and wishes she could have fab hair before she steps out. Asking her friend to wait, she pulls out a large mirror, steamer, blow-dryer et al, basically everything one can find in a salon, from her bag. Looking at her with shock, the friend wonders what she is up to, when the voiceover says – You can’t carry your salon everywhere you go, that’s why carry Livon Serum ”.

Marico Limited chief marketing officer Anuradha Aggarwal says, “Livon exemplifies the contemporary young girl who is out there to make the most of her life. She loves all the surprises and sudden plans that come her way, but looking good is a priority for her! The brand has consistently been an ally in giving her an edge and that added confidence.”

Ogilvy & Mather Mumbai office chief creative officers Harsad Rajadhyaksha and Kainaz Karmakar, add, “Impromptu plans are a way of life for the young girls. Also, looking good for impromptu plans is a necessity of life. This campaign exaggerates these insights in a funny way. The girl carrying an entire salon in her bag or the girl who has a ‘salon practitioner’ hidden in her dressing table, are both wild situations and will bring a smile to the viewers, while making a sharp point about the salon-like finish of Livon Serum. We believe the tone and manner of these films will stand out in the category and make the brand memorable.”

Furthermore the brand has also undertaken a pan India multimedia campaign approach across TV, digital, on-ground activation and PR.

Livon faces competition from brands like Matrix, Streax, Dove among others in the hair serum category.

  • Marico’s hair oil campaign depicts ingredients’ visual delight

MUMBAI: Marico’s youthful and contemporary hair nourishment brand, Hair & Care, has launched a new campaign for its revolutionary fruit hair oils. With this campaign, the brand aims to reignite a feeling of exhilaration and excitement towards hair oiling amongst its youthful consumers.

Hair & Care Fruit Oils caters to the modern, young woman between the age group of 18-30 years, who is on a constant look out for exciting products across categories, especially beauty and personal care. The brand has introduced one-of-a-kind range of hair oils with a distinctive mix of fruits that moisturise and energise hair.

The brand plans to make a big impact in the market through a multimedia promotion exercise led by a TVC being showcased on various shows and channels. Starring Hair & Care’s ambassador, Shraddha Kapoor, in a never seen before avatar, the new ad highlights the brand’s core benefit – hair full of energy. Conceptualised and executed by BBH India, the film has been shot in a manner that makes consumers actually experience the elation and vigor of the new offering.

Commenting on the new campaign, Marico CMO Anuradha Aggarwal said, “The new Hair & Care fruit oils address the hair nourishment needs of its young contemporary consumers. It redefines the traditional source codes of nourishment and introduces the much needed stimulating oiling experience amongst today’s youth. The campaign is built to disrupt the category by presenting this product innovation, not through a narrative but by demonstrating the visual delight of its ingredients and hair that is full of energy.”

The launch, driven by the campaign, focuses on key markets of the Hindi speaking belt. In addition to the TVC, it is being promoted through high impact outdoor and print campaign, an engaging digital campaign and cinema branding, amongst others.

BBH India CCO & managing partner Russell Barrett added, “Hair & Care Fruit Oils is a first of its kind hair oil for a younger audience and hence our advertising had to reflect that. What excited us was the innovation of the product, so, we wondered what if we could have people feel the energy and goodness of fruit rather than merely present a logical argument for it. And our partners at Marico said, why not!”
