  • Pro Kabaddi 5 hikes prize money by Rs 20 mn

    MUMBAI: The stakes for Vivo Pro Kabaddi Season 5 got even higher, with announcement of a consolidated sum of Rs 80 mn as the coveted prize money for the season, which commences on 28 July, 2017, in Hyderabad. This marks a significant and unprecedented increment from Rs 20 mn, which was the prize money scheme for Season 4 of the league in 2016.

    The first match will see Telugu Titans take-on new team, Tamil Thalaivas on 28th in Hyderabad. Fans can catch the tournament live on Star Sports network and Hotstar.

    Twelve teams will clash in 138 exhilarating matches to win the desirable title, set at Rs 30 mn. The runners-up will be awarded Rs 18 mn, while the team that finishes in the third place will win Rs 12 mn. The ‘Most Valuable Player’ prize, previously awarded to Kabaddi stars like Anup Kumar and Manjeet Chillar, is also receiving a substantial boost this season, with the awardee set to win Rs 1.5 mn.

  • PKL Day 2: Category B players cross 5-mn mark with Suraj Desai for Rs 5.25 mn

    MUMBAI: With the results of day one, Nitin Tomar had emerged with the highest bid of Rs 9.3 million in the PKL auctions.

    It was a day when quite a few bidding records were broken. Manjeet Chillar was the most expensive player in PKL history for the better part of the day. But Tomar came towards the end of the day and swept away his Indian team mate’s price tag. That concluded the bidding for Category A Indian players.

    Category B auctions today for Indian players also had many high bids, Suraj Desai went for Rs 5.25 million to Delhi, Jaipur Pink Panthers paid out Rs 5 million for Jaideep Singh and Telugu Titans bid Rs 4.9 million for Nilesh Salunke.

    No Pakistani player got picked at the auction. A total of 10 players from Pakistan were added to the list of players in the auction – including former Waseem Sajjad, former Patna Pirates defender who had even skippered the squad in a few matches over multiple seasons. But at the auction, none of the 12 franchises put up a bid for any of the candidates from the neighbouring nation.

  • Top notch Pro Kabaddi League auction commences; top player bid Rs 93 lakh

    MUMBAI: India’s second most watched sports  league – Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) – has begun the countdown to its fifth season. With Vivo fixed as the title sponsor for the next five seasons, the player auction got underway on 22 May and will end on 23 May. The 12 teams began bidding for players yesterday to constitute their teams who will battle over 130 matches and 13 weeks of matches for the title. Teams have been allowed to keep aside a team purse of Rs 4 crore each for the bidding, taking the 12 teams kitty to Rs 48 crore – 10 teams the scale it was when it commenced in the first season.

    Like earlier, the entire tournament – created by Mashal Sports in which Star India has a 74 per cent stake –  is to be telecast on the Stat Sports bouquet.

    With the older eight teams permitted  to retain only one player, the view was that the bidding would touch new highs. And the team owners did not disappoint. While the figures coughed up for the players have some way to go before they touch the cheques which are written out for the IPL, the numbers are only growing.

    Team Uttar Pradesh paid out Rs 93 lakh for Nitin Tomar, even as the Bengaluru Bulls signed up Rohit Kumar for Rs 81 lakh and the Jaipur Pink Panthers bid Rs 75.5 lakh for Manjeet Chillar.

    The auction is showcasing more than 400 players, including over 60 overseas players from Poland, Republic of Korea, England, Sri Lanka, Iran, Thailand, Japan, Pakistan, Mauritius, Malaysia, Bangladesh, China, Taipei, Kenya, Indonesia, Nepal and Oman. 

    PKL season 5 will start in the month of July till October with the new geographies for VIVO Pro Kabaddi – Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat have been  chosen primarily for their high affinity towards Kabaddi.

    This expansion adds to an already impressive line-up of 8 franchises based out of the major kabaddi centres  in the country – Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Patna, Pune and Jaipur.

    Team Tamil Nadu: Iquest Enterprises – a consortium) owned by N Prasad & Sachin Tendulkar

    Team Haryana: JSW Sports, JSW Group

    Team Uttar Pradesh: GMR League Games Pvt Ltd, GMR Group

    Team Gujarat: Adani Wilmar, Adani Group
