“We are being encouraged to flex our creative stamina”: Viacom18 Hindi mass entertainment chief content officer Manisha Sharma

Mumbai: She’s been adding a lot of colour to Colors programming line up and ratings chart over the past decade that she has been in charge at the GEC. Whether it has been top fiction properties such as the various seasons of Naagin or non-fiction winners such as Bigg Boss, the broadcaster’s mass entertainment chief content officer Manisha Sharma has somehow or the other got her pulse on what viewers want.

And in 2022, Manisha is once again putting her bets on a show she has revived after putting it in the cold freezer for five years – the celebrity dance show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (Jhalak). In its tenth season, the BBC-format based, Jhalak, is being produced under the umbrella of BBC Studios India Production and premiered on 3 September.

In its tenth season, it airs at 8 pm on Saturday and Sundays and is being tomtommed as a celebration of dance, glamour, entertainment, and the journeys of the contestants. And it follows in the footsteps of other 2022 releases such as Dance Deewane Juniors, Khatron Ke Khiladi, Naagin, Harphoul Mohini, Muskurane Ki Wajah Tum Ho, Pishachini, and Saavi Ki Savaari.

The generally reticent Manisha got into a conversation with Indiantelevision.com’s Deven Lad about all things Jhalak , content creation, challenges, and OTT platforms.

    Edited Excerpts

    On what works for Colors

Manisha: What works for Colors are the riveting storylines of its shows mounted on relevant themes and driven by relatable characters. Both fiction and non-fiction shows are loved and enjoyed by viewers especially since we have managed to achieve a balance between them. Colors’ numero uno status can be attributed to the fact it offers something for everyone. Our content slate is carefully curated, and it encompasses a wide variety of genres. At Colors, the presentation of content is paramount. It is pertinent to package the shows in a way that keeps the audience intrigued and hooked to the narrative and the cultural resonance.

    On the emergence of OTT

Manisha: In my opinion, there’s no substitute for television in India. As a nation, we are very family-oriented and millions of households still watch television with their family at the dinner table. The medium provides a collective viewing experience to viewers and enables families to bond. The growing TV consumption is proof that TV is here to stay.

While the viewing patterns are changing at a fast pace with evolving technology, the core remains the same which is ‘storytelling! ‘There will always be an audience for a good story and there’s ample opportunity ahead in understanding these changes and adapting to them.

OTT will be more and more personalised. It is likely that the streaming players will customise their content keeping in mind their preferences. New genres will surface and the experience of watching content will become more immersive.

The preference for OTT is expected to extend from metro cities to tier II and tier III towns too as the amount of time spent watching content on OTT platforms has seen enormous growth since the pandemic. With the huge Indian population waking up to quality content available on OTT platforms, the viewership is only expected to increase in the coming years. While OTT continues to grow, it still is predominantly a form of individual entertainment, whereas TV continues and will be the dominant form of wholesome family entertainment!

    On  Jhalak season 10

Manisha: A whole new set of contestants who are achievers in their arena bring their star power to this season. The choreography is top-notch, exciting, and experimental. The channel has fortified its social media strategy for the show so that viewers can be part of the contestants’ journey.

To amp up the season, we have introduced new elements such as the ‘Judges Popularity Contest’ along with the main competition, off takes of the contestants before and after the performance, and a Golden Chair immunity which the contestants will be competing for week on week. In every episode, we shall bring a strong streak of competition amongst the contestants, making the show even more exciting and engaging.

On the challenges for the new season

Manisha: The show comes back after a hiatus of five years hence getting together the right team was of utmost importance. Choreography is the backbone of this show and so our team went all out to secure the right talents for the choreography team. Putting together the right mix of talents was also a big challenge that we managed to overcome.

On the team involved in the creation

Manisha: There are several people involved in the creation of any show. Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 10 has a core creative group of four members and a backend production team of four to five members and both the teams are assisted by an extended group of creative producers, a reality team, a post-production team, and a production team that manages logistics and operations.

On  Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa streaming on OTT

Manisha: Yes, it is being streamed on OTT. Considering that we are implementing a full-fledged digital strategy, we estimate that it will reflect positively on its viewership. We have received an incredible response to the promos and the premiere episodes of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa season 10 and we hope to live up to the expectations of the audience, who have waited for the show for five years.

On expectations from Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 10

Manisha: Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 10 is all about celebrating dance, glamour, entertainment, and the journeys of the contestants with the fanfare that befits its revival after five years. We have contestants who are achievers and who draw creative energy under the mentorship of celebrated choreographers with a power-packed panel of judges and a super-talented host. We look forward to the continuous love and support of the viewers.

    On fiction vs non-fiction

Manisha: Yes. Both have their challenges and pros. For reality shows, one needs to focus on getting real-life stories of the talent to connect instantly with the audience as the longevity of non-fiction shows is finite; whereas fictional shows are scripted and can be altered as per the requirements.

    On opportunities in television content

Manisha: The audience is open to a wide variety of genres because of the content exposure that they’ve got in the past three years. This encourages us to flex our creative stamina and bring shows that are one-of-a-kind. We see this as an opportunity to provide a platform for talent, showcase unique concepts, and curate content that is aligned with international standards.

    On the continuing TRP race

Manisha: Yes, TRP definitely is a key influencer in today’s time, and it is also a unifier for all broadcasters. Despite all the conviction and belief, we have in the concept and story, the characters and storytelling do get altered basis the ratings show garner.

    On the future of television

Manisha: The swiftly changing market landscape and ongoing diversification make it difficult to project long-term predictions about the future of television. Traditional media will continue to hold a prominent share in the M&E industry as we continue to witness a growth in C&S penetration across India.

Also, there is still high headroom for penetration within the Indian households for a pay TV connection. For many households, TV continues to be the centre of the home and a significant part of family time. However, broadcast players have started realigning their goals, understanding these changing patterns, and adopting agile approaches for content development. As a result, broadcasters have been working towards tailor-making their content that is adept to multiple platforms’ front-end user interfaces.

  • Namak Issk Ka looks into the societal gaze at female performers: Gul Khan

Namak Issk Ka looks into the societal gaze at female performers: Gul Khan

MUMBAI: Can a nachaniya (dancing girl) not be accepted as a dulhaniya (bride) or bahu? Colors’ latest romantic drama, Namak Issk Ka, questions this very outlook. Set in the heartland of Bihar, Namak Issk Ka is the story of Chamcham, who is looked down upon for her profession, but in a twist of fate is married off into a reputable family in Mumbai. But as she tries to fend off prejudice, she sets out on a journey to find her footing in the new family and, eventually, love. Produced by Four Lions Film founder and producer Gul Khan and co-produced by Sunny Side Up Films’ Dipti Kalwani, the show started airing 7 December onwards.

Both Khan and Kalwani clarified that the serial is not inspired by any particular person, but is based on the life of dancers that populate that belt, and how these performers are a part of every celebration in the family.

Everybody appreciates these dancers and their performances, but still people look down upon them. It’s not about the male mindset, but the societal gaze in general. While the entire family will be a part of the function with the dancer, somehow, they will consider her beneath themselves. This is what the makers have tried to bring out through the show.

Kalwani went on to elaborate that while a love story is at the core of Namak Issk Ka, the show is a romantic thriller with multiple interesting genres running in parallel, including a murder mystery and family drama. “With Namak Issk Ka, we have made a fast-moving, plot-driven potboiler of a show which is not just relegated to romance, and where every character has a very interesting backstory,” she said.

It was last year when Khan and Kalwani decided to do Namak Issk Ka. But then the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown happened, delaying the show. However, it also gave them a chance to iron out the details, and once the lockdown was lifted, they began shooting.

Due to Covid2019, the makers could not risk traveling to Bihar hence recreated the entire set in the backdrop of Maharashtra and outskirts of Mumbai. Khan mentioned, “We are very skilled at recreating the places that we feature. We shot in Wai, in and around Maharashtra. We tried to match the landscapes and terrains with those of Bihar. We also had people from Bihar help some of our actors with the language, dialogue and diction training.” She said they have ensured that viewers get the authentic experience of the place in the way she has shot the show.

Still, filming during the age of Coronavirus has been no easy task, shared Kalwani.
Additional challenges notwithstanding, the makers of the show have strictly adhered to all the safety protocols and are fumigating and sanitising the set regularly. They have conducted regular and compulsory medical checks for cast and crew members. They have, in fact, reduced the size of cast and crew present on the set.

The show also marks Khan’s first production venture with Colors. “We were trying to work with Colors for a very long time. After conceptualising the story, we pitched it to Colors and the team really liked it. From then on, we have gone ahead all guns blazing! So far, my experience has been amazing while working with Manisha Sharma and the entire team. We are happy to be associated with a channel that has always presented unique and entertaining concepts, and look forward to a great partnership,” she further added.

The producers discussed with Colors the language, casting, music and background score, the look of the show along with the level of glamour quotient that they wanted to have in Namak Issk Ka, and the audience it would cater to. The broadcaster and showrunners have been pretty much on the same page on all parameters before it went on the floors, Khan said.

Namak Issk Ka stars Shruti Sharma as Chamcham, and famous Bhojpuri actor Aditya Ojha as Yug Pratap Singh. According to Khan, there is a particular requirement for this show. The actors have to connect with the audiences and they have to look like they are from the heartland. While Aditya Ojha and Monalisa are from the Bhojpuri entertainment industry, Shruti Sharma, with her inclination and her talent, fit the bill as Chamcham. While casting for the show, the makers had to look for people who looked like they belonged in this universe.

The show is aired Monday to Friday at 9 pm, which is a very competitive slot – Sony TV airs Indian Idol, whereas Star Plus telecasts Maharaj Ki Jai Ho. Revealing how the production house is trying to make Namak Issk Ka stand out, Kalwani detailed, “The trick is to make a great show that the audience can relate to and narrate a story that you enjoy telling. In this case, we were very excited about telling the story coming from the Hindi heartland. We wanted to talk about music and dance, the people and their language, their food and everything about them. So, culturally we were very keen to do something from this belt, and we have woven a story around it. The story has its own element of love, hatred, thriller, mystery. There is no such exact formula to success. This is what we wanted to do.”

  • Colors launches new social drama, ‘Molkki’

Colors launches new social drama, ‘Molkki’

MUMBAI: All she ever wanted was her freedom: to learn, to dream, to study and to empower others, and to truly love someone. But all her dreams and aspirations shattered when she was tagged as a ‘sold bride’- a molkki. Colors presents yet another hard-hitting concept, a family drama, Molkki, that outlines how the skewed sex ratio led to the bride buying custom which is still prevalent in Haryana. It’s the story of 19-year-old Purvi, who is a mol ki dulhan, which means a bride bought in exchange for money. The show follows the relationship of Purvi and Virender Pratap Singh who are bound by this custom and find themselves in a transactional relationship. From the house of Balaji Telefilms, Molkki will premiere on 16 November and air Monday to Friday at 10 pm only on Colors.

Viacom18 Hindi mass entertainment and kids TV network head Nina Elavia Jaipuria said, “At Colors, we have always believed in the power of storytelling and the impact that it can create. Over the years, through powerful stories like Balika Vadhu, Udaan, Shakti, Barrister Bahu, we have highlighted pertinent social issues. Taking forth this tradition, we bring to you a family drama series set against the lesser-known custom of bride buying. Molkki will chronicle the journey of Purvi, who falls prey to this custom, is married to a widower twice her age but fights it all in her stride.”

The story of Molkki revolves around Purvi (played by Priyal Mahajan), an upright girl with a strong moral compass, who is unknowingly sold as a bride to a sarpanch, a man twice her age, Virender Pratap Singh (played by Amar Upadhyay). Purvi is a self-sufficient, headstrong girl who has always made sure she paved her way in life. She paid for her education by tutoring kids and never footed for any privileges. On the other hand, Virender Pratap Singh is still overcoming his first wife's death and is soaked in the guilt of not being a part of his kids’ life while in their growing up years. But now that he has married for a second time to a bought bride, he does not view it as a real relationship. Transporting viewers to Haryana, Molkki reflects on how Purvi finds her space in society, wins the respect of the people around her, and manages to establish a relationship based on trust and mutual respect with her much-older husband. But will she be a wife, a mother or will she forever be just a bought bride? Will a relationship born out of a money deal, blossom into love?

Viacom18 hindi mass entertainment CCO Manisha Sharma said, “With this show, the aim is to continue giving our viewers variety of entertainment with path breaking concepts and engaging story plots.”

Balaji Telefilms producer Ekta Kapoor said, “At Balaji Telefilms, we have always worked on presenting stories that are realistic, relatable and have a high entertainment quotient. Molkki is one such show that puts the spotlight on the custom of buying brides that is prevalent in India even today. We are happy to be partnering with Colors who are known to present such hard-hitting and socially relevant topics, and I am sure that the viewers will admire this unique story.”
