  • DDB MudraMax’s Operation Black Dot registers 40,000 first time youth voters

DDB MudraMax’s Operation Black Dot registers 40,000 first time youth voters

MUMBAI: Operation Black Dot is an initiative by DDB MudraMax and Thincquisitive Foundation to help make voting easy, engaging and fun for the urban youth. Operation Black Dot has successfully brought about a shift in the way youth looked at voting. The team OBD by breaking down politics and making it more engaging and inclusive has effectively registered 40,000 first time youth voters to exercise their fundamental right.

The aim was to present conventional political discourse in a format which interests below 25 age group as well as explain important political events/facts. At one level the team worked in 60 campuses across the city, helping students make their voter IDs by use of cutting edge technology to quicken the process and at another also conducting such engagements to generate awareness leading up to the 2014 General Elections.

Process: From October through January, all six constituencies of Mumbai had a group of 10 campus ambassadors per college. Their task was to get students to make their voters’ ID card. Two cause ambassadors per constituency supported their outreach campaign. To simplify the process, the OBD team worked in collaboration with the Election Commission.

Hangouts: Given our current socio-economic and political scenario, 2014 general elections will play a key role in shaping the future of our country. Hence, every ‘thinking’ vote matters. Leading up to the date, OBD will help you understand current issues and interact with potential candidates in a manner which is relatable and interesting.

Operation Black Dot (OBD) hosted its very first Hangout with Priya Dutt (MP,Mumbai North Central) and latest with Mayak Gandhi, Member, Aam Aadmi Party at Bandstand Amphitheatre,Bandra West wherein students and young professionals from their constituency got a chance to have to engage with them to question, debate and deliberate as to how they can collaboratively find solutions to matters concerning them and their area in an informal setting. Through a series of such Hangouts with Elected representatives and candidates from other parties across the city, the team shall enable youngsters to make an informed vote in the upcoming 2014 general elections.

Said Pratap Bose, COO, DDB Mudra Group, “The whole concept of “Voting” has always been looked as an activity that is to be addressed and taken upon by the older generation. While it is the youth of our country who are going to play a significant role in building the Indian economy and tend to the future of our nation. It was hence important for us to not only change the face of voting, to make it appealing to the youth,  but also provide guidance, help them understand the nature of politics and also reiterate the fact that they can make a difference. This is what we set out to do with Operation Black Dot, and today it gives me immense joy to know that we’ve registered 40,000 first times voters, in our maiden year! I only wish to see this number grow and reach out to more citizens next year.”

Said Samyak Chakrabarty, Founder of Operation Black Dot & Chief Youth Marketer, DDB Mudra Group, “Operation Black Dot has been able to successfully convey that political discourse does notalways have to be conventional and can be disseminated in a format which appeals to theyounger generation. From putting Member of Parliaments on a Bean Bag at youth hangouts to catchy videos on complex parliamentary affairs, we are making an attemptto bridge the gap between policy makers and young citizens. Going forward, our intent is to continue this movement and find more innovative methods to keep young India engaged with political affairs.”

Said Mandeep Malhotra, President, DDB MudraMax,”Today, the demographics of India shows that 50% of the population is under the age of 25 years and more than 65% below 35-years of age. With this staggering figure in mind, Operation Black Dot aims to give the opportunity to young India to develop the nation from where it is today.  They are the future. Hence, these are the most exciting times for the first time voter. The youngsters have already realized their importance and are slowly starting to learn the ideologies of politics. For me on the other hand, it has been a great experience contributing on-ground, learning and observing. I felt like being the guy on the outside watching youngsters being wooed and educated about politics in India. They were all buzzing with exuberance and excitement to get there voters ID Cards and attend the sessions.”

  • Blackberry Q5 partners with UN India Centre and DDB MudraMax to celebrate International Day of Youth

Blackberry Q5 partners with UN India Centre and DDB MudraMax to celebrate International Day of Youth

Mumbai, 12 August, 2013: Blackberry Q5 partnered with the United Nations India Centre and DDB MudraMax, in Mumbai, to host a celebration to commemorate the “International Day of Youth” on 12th August 2013. With over 150 students from across the city’s colleges, young entrepreneurs, diplomats, changemakers and representatives from the media industry, the event included motivational talks by Dr Rajan Welukar (Vice Chancellor, Mumbai University), Dr Satyapal Singh (Commissioner of Police, Mumbai), Mr Mathew Spacie (Founder, Magic Bus), Mr Shailendra Singh (Jt M.D, Percept India) and Ms Shaili Chopra (Business Editor, Tehelka Maganize), film maker Madhur Bhandkar, Devita Saraf CEO VU Technologies amongst others.

On 17 December 1999, in its resolution 54/120, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.
The theme of International Youth Day 2013 is “Youth Migration: Moving Development Forward”.

Mr. Rajiv Chandran, National Information Office, United Nations India Centre also presented a special message by UN Secretary General
    Mr. Ban Ki-Moon.

“The power of youth is hard to ignore for any country now. At BlackBerry we believe that young people are often the vanguard of technological and social changes that are brought in the world. Technology and Youth is a combination which would be driving the era we belong to. New high-tech gears are growing and essentially changing the means youngsters can interact and communicate. Not surprisingly they are using the most technologically innovative mediums to express themselves, be it to their friends, family or society at large. Keeping this in mind, to address this segment we came up with a youth-targeted BlackBerry Q5. With the revolutionary BlackBerry Q5, running on the BlackBerry 10 platform, our aim to empower the youth further and enable them to express themselves in the most progressive way possible,” said Ashish Gupta, Director, Marketing, Blackberry India.

“This day signifies the role of youth in transforming dialogue to action. The under 35s today enjoy great power to influence our society and it is critical that we create platforms for them to engage with leaders by whom they can be motivated and inspired. At DDB Mudra Max, we are proud to have collaborated with Blackberry and the United Nations to celebrate India’s continuously growing and extremely diverse youth segment”. Mandeep Malhotra, President, DDB MudraMax – OOH, Retail & Experiential.

“Young people make up a significant share of the global number of international migrants. In 2010, there were an estimated 27 million international young migrants. While migration can often offer valuable opportunities and contribute to the development of communities and society at large, it can also pose risks and lead to unacceptable situations, including discrimination and exploitation. The 2013 observance of International Youth Day will raise awareness of the opportunities and risks associated with youth migration, share knowledge and information stemming from recent research and analysis on this topic, and engage young people in discussions on their migration experiences” explains Samyak Chakrabarty, Chief Youth Marketer, DDB Mudra Group.

  • DDB Mudra readies Terra for high growth

MUMBAI: With rural and semi-urban India seeing rapid growth in income and consumption, DDB Mudra Group‘s rural marketing agency Terra is gearing up to seize the opportunity.

Almost four years into existence, Terra is drawing up plans to expand. The workforce has been built gradually over the years to a strength of 100, skills have been acquired through a process of learning from experience, and the agency is ready to pitch aggressively for more business.

Says DDB Mudra Max head and president (experiential, retail and OOH) Mandeep Malhotra, “India is a country where media darkness is significant considering the population of the towns and villages. As an agency Terra has come a long way in a short time. Our work force stands at 100 today and we have teams that can cater to a population of 5000 people at a time. Whenever a corporate or public service body calls for a pitch for rural marketing, Terra is definitely considered.”

Having recently appointed Rohit Samarth as senior vice president to assist Malhotra, Terra is looking to target the virgin territories of the heartland.

Says Samarth, “Though 2011 was not so good, we expect 2012 to be a good year in the communication sector. We as an agency have a well spread network with people actually living in the areas where the communication has to be carried out. We expect to cash in on the momentum we have built over the years and gain pace into our operations.”

Industry experts believe that the rural marketing space itself has evolved to a great extent in the past five years. At a time when telecommunications and mobile has penetrated the semi urban and rural spaces, the population in these areas has seen a sea change in outlook and exposure. This has altered their attitudes and increased their needs, wants and desires. Fundamentally speaking, the rural audience has evolved.

Samarth says, “Today we find rural pockets around big cities like Delhi and Mumbai. Rural marketing is becoming more about experiential marketing in this age.”

Though the industry as a whole may still be struggling to find its ground, Malhotra is sure that the agency has a bright future. “We are confident that the future for Terra is bright considering the growth and learning it has registered for the past four to five years. As an industry on the whole, the future is a tad bit uncertain considering its unorganised nature. The margins are also not that lucrative,” he explains.

Recognising the challenges of the market, Malhotra is not yet ready to share his growth targets. “We will be aggressive,” is all that he is willing to say at this stage.

So get ready to hear more from Malhotra as he presses the accelerator to post high growth this year.
