    Indian startup claims to solve Bollywood’s dubbing dilemma with AI lip-syncing

    MUMBAI: An Indian artificial intelligence startup reckons it has cracked one of cinema’s most vexing problems: making dubbed films look authentic. NeuralGarage’s VisualDub technology has been deployed on War 2, releasing on 14 August, to create what the company claims is the world’s first film visually transformed from one language to another whilst maintaining the illusion of native production.

    The Bollywood sequel, originally shot in Hindi, has secured a straight film certificate for Telugu distribution—not as a dubbed version but as an ostensibly original Telugu production. Neural Garage co-founder & chief executive Mandar Natekar describes this as a “fundamental shift” in content production and distribution.

    The technology addresses a chronic irritant in global film distribution: poorly synchronised dubbing that breaks audience immersion. Traditional dubbing overlays foreign-language audio whilst retaining the original actor’s mouth movements, creating a jarring disconnect that many viewers find off-putting.

    VisualDub purports to solve this by digitally altering actors’ facial movements to match the target language’s phonetic patterns, creating the visual impression that performers originally spoke in the dubbed tongue. The result, Natekar claims, allows producers to sell multilingual versions as distinct original films rather than mere translations.

    The commercial implications could be substantial. Indian cinema’s linguistic fragmentation has long constrained box office potential, with Hindi films struggling in southern states where Telugu, Tamil and other regional languages dominate. Conversely, southern blockbusters rarely achieve pan-Indian success without extensive dubbing campaigns.

    If VisualDub delivers on its promises, producers could command premium pricing for what appears to be multiple “native” productions whilst incurring costs for just one shoot. Natekar suggests this could double or treble pre-release distribution revenues.

    The startup, which has garnered backing from Google’s GenAI Accelerator and AWS’s Global GenAI programme, also won TechCrunch’s Battlefield competition in 2024 and this year’s SXSW innovation award. Such endorsements suggest the technology has impressed seasoned investors and technologists.

    Yet scepticism is warranted. Previous attempts to digitally manipulate actor performances—from CGI de-aging to deepfake technology—have often fallen into the “uncanny valley”, where near-human animations feel disturbingly artificial. Moreover, the cultural nuances embedded in regional cinema extend far beyond language, encompassing gestures, expressions and performance styles that may prove difficult to algorithmically adjust.

    The broader implications stretch beyond Bollywood. Hollywood studios spend millions dubbing blockbusters for international markets, whilst streaming platforms like Netflix invest heavily in local-language content production. A reliable visual dubbing solution could dramatically reduce these costs whilst expanding addressable audiences.

    Natekar envisions actors transcending linguistic boundaries entirely: “Hrithik Roshan can now be a Telugu, Tamil, or even a Spanish actor. Tom Cruise in Bhojpuri? Now possible.”

    Such grandiose claims invite scrutiny. The proof will lie not in technical demonstrations but in audience acceptance. If War 2 performs strongly in Telugu markets without viewers detecting artificial manipulation, VisualDub may indeed herald a new era in global content distribution.

    For now, the technology represents another front in artificial intelligence’s assault on creative industries. Whether it liberates content from linguistic constraints or merely creates more sophisticated fakery remains to be seen. What’s certain is that traditional dubbing studios should be paying attention.

    On identifying the need for VisualDub in the audio-visual domain

    Consider for a moment that you are watching a Korean film with English audio. Your audio input is English while your visual input remains Korean since the visual spoke expression does not match the audio. VisualDub solves for this visual discord, so now when you watch a Korean film with English audio, you feel as if you are actually watching a film shot in English itself. With localization content becoming the biggest currency for the content creation industry, this problem of Visual Discord is amplified exponentially. VisualDub was built to specifically solve this at scale and make content accessible seamlessly to every single person in the world in a language of their choice and which looks truly native and authentic visually in every language.

    On the technological innovations behind VisualDub that differentiate it from existing solutions in the market

    VisualDub has been built in India by NeuralGarage using its own original research and foundation models and without using third party wrappers. This tech is completely proprietary and is patent filed. It has been built specifically to cater to high impact industries like Films, Streaming, Broadcast Networks and Advertising where preservation of resolution and sync of the original is of paramount important across temporal and spatial movements including background and talent IP. The technology delivers at 2k resolution on pre shot footage without the need to create 3D models or avataars and works across screens of every size from theatrical to mobile phones. This differentiates it completely from any other tech available.

    On the role does original research play in the development of NeuralGarage’s models for VisualDub

    Original research ensures that you are building the tech from a top-down approach, and it’s built with a single focus of specifically meeting the high capability demands of the industries you are building for. Unlike horizontal tech that meets some requirements of many industries with generalized models, VisualDub has been built as vertical SaaS to meet all mandatory requirements of key industries like Films, Streaming Platforms and Advertising. We ensure that we are at the forefront at innovation by staying focused on original research that leads to differentiated tech innovations.

    On considering the diverse applications of VisualDub in the entertainment and content creation industry

    Currently we are offering it as a service to select large customers to ensure that technology is used correctly to deliver the right results and creates a playbook for the industry. Our ultimate goal is to create a desktop version of our VisualDub that can be licensed across both individual and enterprise level solutions depending on the size of the business and the annual contracts. We are currently raising capital to be able to move in the direction.

    On NeuralGarage anticipating VisualDub revolutionizing the content creation landscape and some potential impact you foresee it having on the overall quality of dubbed content across languages

    The biggest problem in dubbed content is the visual discord that makes it unrelatable and unauthentic. Content today is monetized across multiple revenue streams, and this is achieved through dubbing. This opens up massive global geographies for content monetization. With VisualDub, dubbed content as we know it ceases to exist. Now with technology it actually gives studios, streaming platforms to create content in every language without incurring additional production cost! VisualDub will allow you to shoot in one language and recreate it authentically in every language on earth without making it look like dubbed content.

    On your aspirations in terms of market penetration and becoming the go-to solution for audio-visual synchronization in dubbed content

    VisualDub has been made in Bharat for the globe. It solves a very pertinent problem for the entire Entertainment, Media & Content industries across the world and we intend to be the default technology for the post production pipeline across these industries. We are creating a new category “Visual Dubbing” in the post production workflow and VisualDub will define this through original innovation and globally scalable use cases.

  • Viacom18 elevates Namrata Tata & Mandar Natekar

    MUMBAI: Viacom18’s national brands aimed at youth and the adult audience, viz. Hindi, youth, music and English entertainment under the leadership of Viacom18 COO Raj Nayak, has announced a rejig of its business and revenue leadership team.

    Namrata Tata, who was responsible for ad sales for English entertainment, will now take on the new and expanded role of head, ad sales – youth, music and English entertainment.

    Mandar Natekar, who was earlier heading Ad Sales – Youth and Music, will be moving into a business role and will be responsible for one of the newest ventures of the network, the MTV Music Project.

    Both Namrata Tata and Mandar Natekar will continue reporting into Ferzad Palia.

    Speaking on the management restructuring, Nayak said, “With the recent consolidation of Hindi, Youth, Music and English Entertainment clusters, Viacom18 is carving out anidentity for itself in the ecosystem that cohesively speaks to adults, youth and millennials, and create opportunities that are multi-dimensional and multi-platform. Namrata and Mandar have been instrumental to the success of the youth, music and English entertainment genres and as we look to dial up synergies and expand to capture white spaces within the genres, they are best suited to support Ferzad in further strengthening our influence in these genres.”

    Under Mandar’s leadership, the MTV Music Project will nurture an ecosystem of new and established artistes and create original music content. Namrata, who has been associated with Viacom18 for the past 6 years and has been instrumental in growing the revenues of the English Entertainment unit will now oversee sales revenue for the consolidated cluster of Youth, Music and English Entertainment.

    Speaking about the role expansions, Viacom 18 Youth, Music and English Entertainment head Ferzad Palia said, “In an increasingly dynamic environment, these genres need to look beyond traditional avenues to dial up growth. As a network, our leadership plays in the Youth, Music and English Entertainment genres have set the ground for us to explore synergies within them to dial up revenues. Namrata, with her understanding of the genres particularly and broadcast as a whole, is well equipped to lead the charge for maximizing the revenue opportunities for these related business units. Mandar, with his nuanced understanding of the youth and music genre – both from content and revenue POVs, is best suited to lead the MTV Music Project, as we look to explore our latest business opportunity in this genre. I am confident that we can further dial up our plays across these wide set of brands and solutions in this space.”

    Mandar Natekar is Movies Now national ad sales head

    MUMBAI: Times Television Network has appointed Mandar Natekar as national ad sales head for its upcoming English movie channel – Movies now.

    In his new role, Natekar will report in to Movies Now channel head Ajay Trigunayat.

    Prior to Movies Now, he was with Reliance Big Entertainment‘s new media venture – BigAdda as the revenue head and CMO wherein he set up the entire team, operations and revenue template for social networking monetisation.

    Trigunayat said, “We are pleased to have Natekar on-board; he brings along a decade of TV and digital space experience; an ideal mix to develop a robust strategy and revenue pipeline for Movies Now.”

    Natekar comes with over 10 years of experience in the field of sales and marketing. As the national ad sales head, he will drive the new brand to the market. His mandate will be to establish Movies Now as a preferred platform for advertisers across the country.

    He has also worked with Turner International for over five years where he last held the post of HBO ad sales head – West & North. 

    Natekar has also worked with Sony Entertainment Television, where he was a part of the startup ad sales team for Max. He started his career with the response team of Times Group‘s parent company, Bennett Coleman & Company Limited.
