    Dubai fest to celebrate Indian cinema this year

    MUMBAI: The eighth Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), to be held from 7-14 December, will, in its ‘Celebration of Indian Cinema‘ programme, will feature three world premieres, two international premieres and several first-ever regional screenings of films in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Bengali.

    “With our selection this year, we wanted to bring the true diversity of Indian cinema to DIFF,” said DIFF consultant for the subcontinent programme Dorothee Wenner.

    The celebration will flag off with the premiere of Yash Raj Films‘ Ladies vs Ricky Bahl on 8 December. The film, directed by Maneesh Sharma depicts the story of suave and charismatic conman Ricky Bahl (Ranveer Singh) who makes a living by deceiving women until he meets his match in the form of Anushka Sharma‘s character.

    Also making its world premiere will be Shalini Usha Nair‘s Palas In Bloom (Akam), based on renowned author Malayattoor Ramakrishnan‘s celebrated Malayalam novel Yakshi. Debutant director Muthusamy Sakthivel‘s Tamil film Life is a Game (Maithanam) will also make its international premiere at the festival.

    Srijit Mukherji‘s 7th August (Baishe Srabon), that will also making its international premiere, explores the dark underbelly of Kolkata. On the other hand, Karan Gour‘s Corrode (Kshay), that makes its Middle East premiere, is a psycho drama based on the story of a woman‘s need for an unfinished sculpture that blossoms into an obsession.

    Competing in DIFF‘s Muhr AsiaAfrica Awards for feature films will be Kaushik Ganguly‘s Laptop that shows how a single commodity – a laptop – connects several lives and narratives as it changes hands to change lives. The film will make its international premiere at DIFF.

    Also, making its world premiere and contending in the Muhr Asia Africa Awards for short films would be Rohit Pandey‘s Safe (Mehfuz) that depicts the story of a city shaken by violence, a man who looks after its dead, and a woman wandering its empty streets.

    Vying for honours in DIFF‘s Muhr AsiaAfrica Awards for documentary films will be Sandeep Ray‘s Sound of Old Rooms (Kokkho-Poth) and Anand Patwardhan‘s Jai Bhim Comrade which follows the music and the tradition of Vilas Ghogre, a leftist poet and singer, who hung himself in protest against the deseceration of Dr Babasheb Ambedkar‘s statue. Both films will be screened in the Middle East for the first time at DIFF.

    TV18 stalls plans of Gujarati and south language biz news channels

    MUMBAI: TV18 has stalled its plans to launch three regional business news channels and will wait till the economic downturn reverses before it revives its growth plans in this space, a source tells Indiantelevision.com.

    TV18 is looking at launching a Gujarati and a south-language business news channel. The plan is also on to launch another regional business news channel, the language of which is kept under wraps.

    “We will launch these channels only when the market improves,” says the source.

    CNBC TV18 South will be a single channel that will beam out business news in all the four southern languages – Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

    TV18 believes that there is potential to grow its business by making strategic investments, both through organic and inorganic routes, in regional and local language news channels.

    TV18 is planning to raise Rs 5.1 billion through rights issue, out of which Rs 3 billion will be utilised towards repaying debt and Rs 300 million on the Forbes project. The company will also invest Rs 450 million for subscribing to the rights issue of Infomedia.

    “Mind it!”

    A phrase immortalized by Channel [V]’s south Indian cowboy character Quick Gun Murugun in the nineties. And one that is most relevant to the regional language market in 2007. The year saw a flurry of launches or announcements of launches, a change in long-running political equations, continued growth, and an increasing intensity of competition in almost every language segment – whether Tamil or Malayalam or Kannada or Telugu – of the regional market.

     

    The big news of the year in this space was the public parting of ways between Kalanidhi Maran’s Sun Network and his grand uncle Karunanidhi, the chieftain of the DMK party. The breakup was bitter, and it was almost as if the floodgates were let open and a flurry of launches followed.

    The DMK launched its own channel Kalaignar TV with a little bit of help from former Maran friend Sharad Kumar, a few Sun TV employees and Sun arch rival Raj TV. The latter offered it uplinking facilities for Kalaignar TV which has a menu consisting of film and entertainment programs and news. The DMK appeared to be in in a hurry to make up for time it lost – over the past decade during which it supported the Sun Network – and announced plans to build a channel bouquet with a 24-hour news channel and music or a movie channel. This apart, it initiated steps to set up its own cable network in the state to counter any moves by the Maran-owned MSO Sumangali Cable Vision as well as to gain control of the last mile.

    DMK ally, Raj TV announced plans to introduce its DTH service, again as if to darken the Sun Network’s DTH prospects. In May 2007, the Raj TV management said that it would roll out 11 channels, and would take the acquistion trail to expand nationally in other languages, without disclosing any time frame. In August, 2007, it unveiled a FTA music channel Raj Musix.

    Besides Musix, Raj TV telecasts two channels – Raj TV and Raj Digital Plus’.
    On the Raj TV horizon are Tamil and Telugu news channels.

     

    Jaya TV, backed by the AIADMK party, and a comparatively smaller player, recently started testing two new Tamil channels – music and news, which are expected to start full time transmissions sometime this month. As the year drew to a close, Tamil Nadu Congress member of parliament, KV Thangabalu’s flagged off Mega TV, a 24 hour FTA Tamil news, current affairs, and entertainment channel, while Tamil Nadu Congress MLA Vasanth Kumar said he intends to start Vasanth TV.

     

    For the Sun Network, 2007 was business as usual, the political setbacks notwhithstanding. The network, which has the highest number of channels in south India, dominates the region, with the exception of Kerala where it trails Asianet as a close No 2. It drew the curtains on its DTH service using transponders on Insat 2B, offering subscription packages that looked extremely competitive and attractive. Industry watchers expect Sun’s dominance to get eroded over time, but 2008 is unlikely to be the year when we will see that happen.

    “Sun’s biggest strength has been content, be it GEC or movie. Just because Sun may be not be gaining numbers and Kalaingar is showing unprecedented growth, it doesn’t mean that advertisers are going to run away from Sun to its next biggest rival. At present, Sun has retained a firm grasp on its slowly reducing share in percentage terms, its share has not reduced in numbers,” says an ad executive.

     

    So far, Sun has been able to maintain a lead over all the others in most of the space it operates in. In a few places, even its second channel has performed better and attracted far more viewers than its nearest competition’s main channel has. In a very dynamic space, how the new equations will work out only time can tell.

     

    For Telugu print and TV baron Ramoji Rao, however, 2007 would be a year he would prefer to write off as a bad dream. For Rao, who owns TV network ETV and leading Telugu newspaper Eenadu, it was reportedly his close alignment for the past quarter century with the Telugu Desam and his run-ins with the Congress chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, Y Rajshekhar Reddy that cost him dear. It is pertinent to note that a deal signed between US-based Blackstone Group and Rao’s holding company Ushodaya in January 2007 for the sale of a 26 per cent stake is yet to see closure. If Blackstone’s proposal to invest $275 million in Ushodaya had gone through, it would have been the biggest ever media investment in an Indian firm.

    2007 will also go down in the annals of regional television history as the year of TV9. Promoted by Associated Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABCL), it appears to have ambitions to get its foothold into almost every language segment. In Andhra Pradesh, TV9 News got the better of Gemini News and ETV2 News, with its Telugu religious channel Sanskruti beginning to get noticed.

    In Karnataka TV9 Kannada surpassed the biggest player Sun’s Kannada news offering Udaya Varthegalu. It has also been itching to get control of Kerala’s fledgling news channel IndiaVision, but has only managed to start selling air time for it.

     

    Karnataka witnessed the launch of two GEC channels Asianet’s Suvarna and Kasthuri (the latter headed by then chief minister HD Kumaraswamy’s wife) during the year. Another channel ‘Real Estate TV’ for national consumption by a construction group made a lot of noise, but failed to get its signals carried.

     

    “Kasthuri could be eating into DD Bangalore’s ad shares, especially ads by the state government and public sector undertakings based in Karnataka,” said an executive from an advertising agency. “Having been the chief minister, Kumaraswamy could leverage his contacts in these companies. Even if these pickings are small, they are very good for a new entrant,” he avers.

     

    Observers expect the action in the southern space to continue. Balaji Telefilms is expected to launch TV channels in partnership with Star TV either in 2008 or 2009. And there is no doubt that others will also make a try for the southern pie.

    MUMBAI: Amrita TV, the Malayalam satellite channel set up in April 2005, has within a short span of time, established itself for innovative and quality programming targetting the entire family .Recently various forums presented Amrita TV with accolades including the Best Channel Award.

    The Forum for Better Television, presented Amrita TV with six Awards in the telefilms category out of which ‘Errul megangalkkum sooryres mikalkkum madhyee’ won three awards for best tele-film, best script writer, best editing ;while Neermathalathende pookal bagged three awards for best direction, best cinematography and best sound recording. Both these tele -films are in-house productions of the channel.

    The Kerala Film Audience Council also presented the best tele-film Award to Neermathalathende Pookal, an in-house production. The LIVE Chancellor awards honoured Amrita TV with best TV channel award. The other Awards comprised the best interview-based programme for Samagamam , an interactive show of the channel which is running since April 2005, and has been recognized as a channel identity programme; and special jury mention for Ularakal, an investigative current affairs programme –both these programmes are produced in-house by Amrita TV.

    The Chitram Television Awards adjudged Amrita TV as best TV channel. It also bestowed the best anchor award for Samagamam.

    A commissioned serial of the channel – Chitrashalabham- got three Awards for best direction, best serial and best actress.

    To maintain the quality and integrity of the channel’s programming character nearly 74 per cent of Amrita TV’s programmes are produced in-house by its team of talented and experienced directors.In May 2006, Amrita TV was bestowed with 15 of the 29 Kerala state awards for excellence in television in different categories–the first channel to be so honoured in its very first year of operation.

    Kappa TV asks viewers to shoot an idea

    MUMBAI: First, it dared to go off the beaten track with a programming mix in four languages including Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi and English. And now, Kerala Mathrubhumi Group’s youth-centric music channel – Kappa TV – will telecast a new contest show for a month starting end-November.  

    The contest is about being creative with your mobile gadgets and though a date and time hasn’t been fixed yet, it will be a half an hour show with 24 minutes of content and 6 minutes of advertising during prime time from Monday to Friday with repeats over the weekend.

    Participants will be required to click/record a short film or photo gallery/music album and submit online to the channel, with entries of not more than 3 minutes’ duration. The second level will see 30 people selected from each category, whittled down to 10 each. Three winners will be chosen from each category in the third and final level, with prizes worth Rs 3.5 lakh distributed among the nine winners, who will be featured on Kappa TV. Of the three levels, the first has no particular theme while the second and third rounds will be more specific.

    “We want to see to what extent people can extend their imagination,” says Mathrubhumi TV CEO Mohan Nair, who is helming the eight-strong in-house team producing the show.

    What about the authenticity of the clips being received? Nair says they won’t know in the first round but for the next two rounds, a separate team will monitor the participants.

    While the show host and three judges are being finalised, it is certain they will be popular local personalities. Each episode, shot in Malayalam at the Mathrubhumi TV Studio, will feature six people demonstrating not only their creativity but also delving into their work, family and aspirations.

    Promotions are on since 22 October, and will go on till 21 November, involving the Mathrubhumi Group’s strong media line up of news and radio channels, newspapers and website, as also outdoor hoardings and college activities in the form of game shows.

    “The contest is open to all but we are getting the youth involved because they are very much in tune with mobile phones and they are also keen to be involved with channels. Our research revealed that not just students but also parents are watching Kappa TV,” says Nair.

    Not surprisingly, Kappa TV has 22,773 subscribers on YouTube while its Facebook page boasts 31, 632 likes. In keeping with the concept of the show, Kappa has roped in Idea Cellular as on-ground and on-air sponsor.

    Hope this ‘idea’ works for Kappa TV gets in youngsters as well as elders to spin their creative ideas.

    MUMBAI: With the sixth anniversary celebrations of MSN India under way, MSN India has announced the launch of five new portals, MSN Hindi, MSN Tamil, MSN Telugu, MSN Kannada and MSN Malayalam apart from unveiling Windows Live Messenger in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

    MSN India also unveiled the new MSN India Homepage and Windows Live Domains. Prominent amongst these announcements is the launch of its new language portal homepage on http://in.msn.com along with launching Windows Live Messenger in the Hindi and the other regional languages (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam).

    This new introduction enables MSN users to now chat in their regional language with their friends and family on MSN Messenger. The MSN Hindi and regional language portals was launched by renowned singer Shubha Mudgal in an event organized recently in the capital.

    The new MSN Hindi other regional languages (MSN Tamil, MSN Telugu, MSN Kannada and MSN Malayalam) feature of Windows Live Messenger is also integrated with the MSN portal and has plenty of content which is of desi flavor such as Movies featuring film previews and interviews with the stars.     Symphony TV announces life-time achievement award to Malayalam poet

    MUMBAI: Thiruvananthapuram-based production house Symphony Television has announced its life-time achievement award to eminent Malayalam poet and top lyricist P Bhaskaran.

    Bhaskaran was chosen for the honour by the Symphony TV advisory committee headed by Malayalam poet and lyricist O N V Kurup.

    The award, comprising Rs 50,001, a citation and a memento, would be presented to Bhaskaran at a function here on 14 August, according to a Symphony TV press release.

    “Bhaskaran is a multi-faced personality who has made outstanding contribution to Kerala society and culture as freedom fighter, poet, lyricist, actor, singer and director,” the selection committee said.

    MUMBAI: The Thiruvananthapuram-headquartered media house Asianet Communications Ltd is planning to launch two more channels in the Malayalam television space. One of these two projects will deal with a television channel covering the education genre.

    Speaking on the occasion of the second anniversary celebrations of the media firm’s youth-oriented entertainment channel Asianet Plus, Asianet chairman Reji Menon revealed the company’s long term plans. “Asianet targets to have a total of five television channels and one of these will be an educational channel,” he said, without offering any time frame on the plans.

    “Asianet will be launching India’s first ever educational channel. We are still working out the plan and the project is presently in its preliminary stage,” Asianet managing director K Madhavan told indiantelevision.com.

    According to market sources, Asianet is seriously looking at expanding its presence in the Southern television space by entering the non-Malayalam (Kannada, Telugu and Tamil) market. “The fifth channel might possibly target one of these three languages,” says a source.

    Flagship entertainment channel Asianet, the youth channel Asianet Plus and the news channel Asianet News constitute Asianet’s television force at present.

    Asianet music talent hunt ‘Idea Star Singer’ semifinals to kick off

    MUMBAI: Malayalam channel Asianet’s reality music talent hunt show Idea Star Singer has entered the semifinal stage now. The programme, telecast on Sundays at 7 pm, is an initiative to spot talented singers in Malayalam.

    The judging panel lead by Malayalam music director M Jayachandran has now selected 24 singers out of 40 from the quarter finals. These 24 singers will now clash for the final slots in the coming weeks.

    Asianet has promised the winners with singing assignments in Malayalam films and music videos.

    Asianet also telecasts a talent hunt to spot comedy talents, Minnum Thaaram (The Shining Star), as well. The programme, anchored by popular Malayalam actor Jagadish, brings Malayalam’s budding comedy talents to the limelight.
