    SonyLIV launches first Malayalam offering ‘Kaanekkaane’

    Mumbai: SonyLIV’s first Malayalam offering “Kaanekkaane” is set to premiere on 17 September.

    Directed by Manu Ashokan, the film features Aishwarya Lekshmi and Shruti Ramachandra in lead roles. “SonyLIV has opened a door of opportunities for the Malayalam film industry to showcase its content. Kaanekkaane is my second project as a director, and I am happy that I got to team up with writers Bobby and Sanjay once again,” said Ashokan, who is also known for the Malayalam film “Uyare”.

    “After successfully exploring content in various languages, we are delighted to announce our first Malayalam offering. The film promises to keep viewers on the edge of their seats as we connect with the Malayalam speaking audiences in India and across the globe,” said Sony Pictures Networks India head of content for SonyLIV and Sony Entertainment Television Ashish Golwalkar.

    Written by celebrated writers Bobby and Sanjayhe, the film is a mix of family drama and murder mystery. Produced by TR Shamsudheen, under the banner DreamKatcher, the film also features actors Dhanya Mary Varghese, Rony David Raj, Prem Prakash, Binu Pappu, Sruthy Jayan, and Alok Krishna in prominent roles.   

    “Each character in Kaanekkaane has been brilliantly written, and I had a great time working with Tovino and Aishwarya. My character has many facets to it and I enjoyed unravelling each layer in the film,” said actor Suraj Venjaramoodu.

    “It feels great when you have such a brilliant team of cast and crew to work with. After a long time, I had the opportunity to work with Aishwarya Lekshmi and director Manu Ashokan and the experience was amazing,” said actor Tovino Thomas.

    JP Dutta’s war epic jinxed

    MUMBAI: J P Dutta, who was recently in the news when he announced the remaking of the Malayalam film Adaminte Makan Abu, is miffed with the Ministry of Defence for not granting permission to start shooting his war epic.

    The film is about how a war brings the unlikeliest of companions and allies together. It is said to be a tribute to patriotism.

    It is said that Dutta wanted to begin shooting on the film soon after his last film LOC Kargil was released nine years ago and had even signed artistes like Abhishek Bachchan, Suniel Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Vinod Khannaand Akshaye Khanna among others but the permissions of the ministry came in the way.

    Dutta has been pursuing the ministry to get the related permissions since the last two years but to no avail.

    Malayalam film Adaminte Makan Abu out of Oscar race

    MUMBAI: Malayalam film Adaminte Makan Abu, India‘s official entry to the upcoming Academy Awards, has failed to make it to the top nine shortlist for the Best Foreign Film for 2011.

    With the Indian entry out of the race, nine films including Bullhead (Belgium), Monsieur Lazhar (Canada), Superclasico (Denmark), Pina (Germany), Footnote (Israel), Omar Killed Me (Morocco), In Darkness (Poland) and Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale (Taiwan) are among the shortlisted entries, according to a statement on the official Oscars website.

    These will be further winnowed down to the five nominees by specially invited committees in New York and Los Angeles. Over the weekend, the committee will review the films again and cast their ballots.

    India is, thus, left out with the only remaining hope at this year‘s Academy Awards, director Sohan Roy‘s DAM 999. It featured among the 265 films contending for the ‘Best Picture’ nomination at the Oscars. Along with it, three of its songs were among the 39 shortlisted for nominations in the Original Song category for the upcoming 84th Academy Awards.

    The final Oscars presentation ceremony will take place on 26 February at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

    Akshay Kumar to remake Pokkiri Raja in Hindi

    MUMBAI: Akshay Kumar has bought the remaking rights of Malayalam film, Pokkiri Raja.

    Titled Naam Bhai Boss, the film will have Kumar and Imraan Abbas reprise the roles that Mammootty and Raavan star Prithviraj essay in the original.

    The film revolves around Madhavan Nair who unknowingly kills a teenager and his eldest son, Raja, take the blame and is sentenced to jail for five years.

    After returning from jail, Raja moves to Madhurai where he rescues the life of the daughter of Maniannai. The village landlord hen turns his right hand. He is named as Madhurai Raja. Years later, he started being known as Pokkiri Raja.

    The film will be directed by Antony D‘souza.

    Incidentally, Kumar has also bought the rights of the super hit song ‘Appadi Podu‘ from the Tamil film Ghilli and plans to use it in Naam Bhai Boss.

    The film is expected to hit the screens by the end of this year.

    Vidya Balan accepts second Malayalam film

    MUMBAI: Even as Balaji Telefilms, the makers of The Dirty Picture are promoting the film in whichever way they can, Vidya Balan, who made a brief appearance in the Malayalam film Urumi has given her consent to play a role in Malayalam film director Amal Neerad‘s next Arival Chuttika Nakshathram.

    The film being produced under the banner of August Cinema is said to be a period drama set in the pre-Independence era between the 1930s and 40s when the Communist movement started in Kerala.

    The film that marks the coming together of Mammootty and Prithviraj after Pokkiri Raja will have the former playing the hero and Prithviraj essaying the role of the villain.

    Shah Rukh Khan to promote Malayalam film

    MUMBAI: Besides promoting his ambitious forthcoming film Ra.One, Shah Rukh Khan is also promoting a Malayalam film titled Father‘s Day.

    As part of the promotional campaign, Khan will play a cameo in the promos of the film along with Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty.

    In fact, it was Pookutty who helped director Kalavoor Ravikumar to get Khan doing the promos. After Ravikumar met Khan and narrated the script, the actor readily agreed to provide a helping hand to the promos.

    Father‘s Day stars Shaheez and Miss Kerala Indu Thambi in the lead along with Revathy, Shankar, Suresh Krishna, Vineet, Jagathy , KPAC Lalitha and Lal among others.

    The film has been produced by Bharat Cinemas.
