    NEW DELHI: Kerala swept the publicity awards in the National Tourism Awards for the year 2014-15 with as many as three awards apart frpm an award to a foreign tourist for writing about the state.

    The Tourism Departments of Kerala and Gujarat jointly shared the Tourism award Most Innovative use of Information Technology – Social Media / Mobile App.

    Ms Stephanie Pearson of the United States received the award for feature on Kerala, “The Green Heaven”.

    The Tourism Department of Kerala received two other awards: for the coffee table volume on“Kerala & The Spice Routes”, and their Brochure “The Great Backwaters (Das Faszinierendste Gewässer der Erde)” in German Language in the category of Excellence in Publishing in Foreign Language other than English.

    The Best Tourism Film award went to Department of Tourism of Daman & Diu for the film “Ilha De Calma”.

    The Department of Tourism of Telangana for their coffee Table Book “Ancient Temples of Telangana” in the category of Best Tourism Promotion Publicity Material by States and Union Territories.

    The awards were given away over the weekend by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan who said tourists are the Brand Ambassadors of their respective countries and Tourism is a mode of improving the image of their countries abroad.

    All the persons involved in Tourism industry are the Flag Bearers of the country. The continuous strive for service excellence is all the more important as India’s Tourism Sector is on an upward growth track.

    Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma and Secretary Vinod Zutshi also spoke on the occasion.

    In all, 74 Awards were presented in various segments of the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. Tourism Ministers of many States, Central and State Government Officials, Members from the Travel and Hospitality Industries, including leading Hoteliers, Travel Agents and Tour Operators and Travel Media attended the function.

    NEW DELHI: Awards for the most Film Promotion Friendly State/Union territory, tourism promotion and publicity and the best foreign journalist and photographer for India are among the various categories of the National Tourism Awards to be presented this month.

    The awards for 2014-15 will be given away by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on 30 July 2016 at a function organized by the Tourism Ministry in the presence of Minister Mahesh Sharma.

    The awards in Tourism Promotion and Publicity include Excellence in Publishing; Best Tourism Film; Best Tourism Promotion Publicity Material (produced by State/Union Territories and Private Stakeholders); and Most Innovative use of Information Technology – Social Media/ Mobile Apps.

    An award for best film friendly state was introduced in the National Film Awards this year and was presented to Gujarat for 2015.

    The Ministry annually presents National Tourism Awards to various segments of the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. These awards are presented to State Governments / Union Territories, classified hotels, heritage hotels, approved travel agents, tour operators and tourist transport operators, individuals and other private organizations in recognition of their performance in their respective fields and also to encourage healthy competition with an aim to promote tourism. The National Tourism Awards have over the years emerged as a prestigious recognition of achievements in the travel, tourism and hospitality sectors.

    Other categories include awards for Comprehensive Development of Tourism; Best Civic Management of a Tourist Destination in India and in various categories for travel agents or tour operators, apart from awards for hotels in different categories and states and private entrepreneurs for various initiatives.

    NEW DELHI: The Delhi-based National School of Drama, which has formed the training ground for some of the best television and film personalities, is to get five regional centres in different parts of the country, Parliament has been told.

    This follows the recommendations made by the Broad Based Committee for opening up of five regional centres across the country.

    The NSD Society proposes to establish one regional centre each at Kolkata, Mumbai/Goa, Jammu and Kashmir, and the North-East besides upgrading the existing Regional Resource Centre (RRC) at Bengaluru to become a full-fledged regional centre.

    Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma said these regional centres are to be established in consultation with the concerned State Governments who were required to provide accommodation for the purpose.

    So far, only Karnataka has allotted land for the purpose at Bengaluru. NSD has started one year teaching training programme in the Bengaluru Chapter commencing from academic session 2014-15.

    In addition, under consolidation of Out-reach Programme in the North-East Region, NSD has opened its Centres in Sikkim and Tripura. 

    Several actors like Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Nadira Babbar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and others and filmmakers like M S Sathyu have made major contributions to the NSD, many of them beginning their careers here.

    Media campaign to popularise Odisha’s Nabakalebar festival

    NEW DELHI: The Central Government is planning to release a media campaign across electronic, print and online to publicise Odisha’s Nabakalebar festival as an international event.

     

    Tourism minister Mahesh Sharma gave the assurance to Odisha Tourism and Culture Minister Ashok Chandra Panda.

     

    Sharma said funds will also be released at the earliest for three light and sound shows proposed to be held at Dhauli, Udayagire / Khandagire Caves and Konark.

     

    He said a special media campaign would be mounted to popularize Nabakalebar as an international festival.

    Tourism Ministry of India to launch ‘Know Your India’ drive

    MUMBAI: The Government of India is looking at engaging the youth and kids of the country via a new initiative called ‘Know Your India’ or ‘Bharat Ko Jaano’ drive. The government is urging kids to see concealed gems all over India head overseas for vacationing with this drive.

     

    Union minister of culture & tourism Mahesh Sharma said, “India is an undiscovered treasure hunt, so if powers are channelized in the proper direction, we’ll have more Indians lingering to discover the anonymous locations in India,” said Sharma.

     

    “How many of you’ve toured Delhi zoo? We sense tours to domestic destinations that provide knowledge regarding our culture and history will benefit if initiated in school set of courses,” he added.

     

    However, Sharma added that the proposal was in a primary phase.

     

    When queried as to how the culture ministry planned to make sure the security of tombstones that are still ignored in spite of being taken care of by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India), Sharma said, “We’ve heard that Archaeological Survey of India isn’t working properly and we believe it. But we expect to handle this problem, along with many others quickly and definitely.”
