    Ogilvy apologises to Malala Yousafzai

MUMBAI: Looks like Indian advertising is coming under the radar for constant controversies. This time Ogilvy & Mather India’s series of ads for Kurl On titled ‘Bounce Back’ trigged negative conversations. The ad series features Malala Yousafzai, Mahatma Gandhi and Steve Jobs.

The art work showcases a cartoon depiction of Pakistani young activist Malala being shot, and then miraculously coming back to life after a night’s rest on a Kurl On mattress. Social media was buzzing with thoughts that the ad is offensive at various levels. Considering the gravity of the situation, Ogilvy went ahead to undertake an investigation into process. There are no talks initiated for the other creatives that use Mahatma Gandhi and Steve Jobs as central characters.

The official release issued by the agency on its website stated, “We deeply regret this incident and want to personally apologise to Malala Yousafzai and her family. We are investigating how our standards were compromised in this case and will take whatever corrective action is necessary. In addition, we have launched a thorough review of our approval and oversight processes across our global network to help ensure that our standards are never compromised again.”

The agency also tweeted about the same.

It can be recalled that last year around the same time, the Ford Figo controversial posters caught the attention of the world. JWT’s Bobby Pawar and Ford India’s Sriram Padmanabhan had to take responsibility of this and had to step down.

So, who will take responsibility from Ogilvy? Any guesses?

  • Narendra Modi gets chatty with ETV

Narendra Modi gets chatty with ETV

JAIPUR: BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, while for the first time giving a long interview to ETV, during the electioneering environment, has expressed that in the Indian politics this will be an election of hope. Because, the people have lost faith not only on Congress Party and its Prime Minister, but also on the system named government. That is why the first priority should be to get back the faith of the people.

The interview of Narendra Modi has been telecast on all ETV channels. It will be re-telecast at 8.30 pm during Central Hall Programme. Head of ETV News Network, Jagdish Chandra on this occasion said that during the Lok Sabha Elections, the channel has started a series of programmes for bringing national issues and opinions of national leaders on those issues to the common people. This series has started with the interview with Narendra Modi. Narendra Modi is believed to be very near to be the next Prime Minister. Nearly 240 channels’ applications are pending with Narendra Modi for getting his interview. But, to make reach his voice to 35 crore viewers, he chose first ETV.

For ETV’s programme “Central Hall”, Senior Journalist Harishankar Vyas took interview of  Narendra Modi. In reply to his question on “Congress Free India”, Modi said that it means Corruption free India, Dynasty free India, Free from Undemocratic methods, Free from misuse of constitutional agencies of India, Free from price rise and free from threat to India. Because, Congress has become a medium for all these. Hence Congress Free India call has been given. When, he is saying Congress free India, that means he is calling to free from the work culture that has been developed in India over sixty years by Congress. And also for the free from vote bank policy adopted by Congress.

On a question that previously some non-Congress governments also functioned similar to Congress during their tenure, Modi replied that except Atal Bihari Vajpayee, all others heading non-Congress governments, were having Congress Gotra (lineage). They had been groomed in Congress. Only due to personal differences or for any other political reasons they had been separated from Congress.

Narendra Modi also said that he has a clear picture in mind on what will be his priorities after forming government. Administrative system has to be revived to uplift the poor. Modi asserted that he doesn’t consider himself as Hero. His commitment is for the poor, farmer, youth, women and jawans.

Narendra Modi during his 66 minutes interview openly discussed on National and International issues, safety and army related issues and also on economic reforms issues. In between, the interview, ETV News Network Head Jagdish Chandra presenting the reviews said that Modi wants to implement the Gujarat Model across the nation, which will be a big challenge before him. Modi during the discussion also hinted that RSS life vision can be seen in his work style.

Commenting on UPA government, Narendra Modi said that their policies are of vote bank policies. They run the government to win  the elections and we want to run the government to empower the people. For them, grabbing power is everything, and we want to empower the people. Vote bank based policies empty the government treasury and term these as economic reforms. There is a need to weed out huge obsolete laws. Even after the files complete 40 Dhams (holy places), it never completes the journey. Modi also expressed his views on development of agriculture, Shipping Industry and tourism. On replying to a question, Modi said that his think tank will be 125 crore public.

Narendra Modi, showed interest in Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Sashtri. Replying a question on Health issues, Modi said that Gandhiji had always talked about hygiene, but we couldn’t teach our children about those culture. We will present a Clean India on Gandhiji’s 150th anniversary. We should think on being healthier than suffer from diseases. We want to set up one medical colleges in each district. Modi cleverly avoided the reservation issue and said that he raised the number of seats in Engineering and Medical Colleges to such an extent that everyone can get opportunity to study. He gave priority to increase job opportunities for youths.

Narendra Modi, during his interaction with ETV, for the first time spoke about his personal life and interests. He said that he likes to listen music, especially instrumental music. He also likes to trek in mountains and Himalaya is his favorite place. He used to read lot of books in his village library during childhood. But, now he doesn’t get time to read. He also said that he never dreamed of being something, and never told young people to dream to become someone. But, yes, he dreams to do something and advises the young to dream of doing something. And he left home, left family, and left village, only to do something for Mother India. Not to be something.

Women leaders honoured at WWLC 2014

MUMBAI: Women who’ve reached top positions in business would understand the kind of courage, conviction and sacrifice it takes for a member of the fairer sex to achieve that kind of success.

And so the World Women Leadership Congress (WWLC) 2014 was recently held on 14 and 15 February at the Taj Lands End in Mumbai to honour such outstanding women and their achievements.

The WWLC Awards recognized the profound role played by women as leaders, decision makers and administrators in shaping the future of nations across the globe.

The panel was constituted by women from different walks of life from different nationalities who all but echoed Mahatma Gandhi’s saying: “Be the change you wish to see”.

The Social Business Company founder and MD Tania Ellis said: “Women play an integral part in driving the global consciousness movement.”

While several women still choose to be home makers, many others have broken the shackles and made it large in the world outside. According to BNY Mellon managing director, global head of diversity and inclusion Jyoti Chopra, “Women who have made it to that position share tremendous drive, mentorship, are risk takers, visionaries, have the skill to connect, to lead, inspire and motivate.”

During a session titled ‘Women leaders as architects of change’, Chopra expounded the qualities of a good leader. “You need to find solutions to the issues troubling you. Also, being a good listener helps,” she said while stressing that personal change was a prerequisite of social change.

Women’s Business Development Centre president and CEO Nancy Allen opined that women in leadership positions are always interested in giving back to the community. “It is great to be successful. But a woman knows that their success depends on the success of the community,” she said.

Zambia Media Women Association media consultant and board member Sally Chiwama was of the view that the future would belong to women, provided they ‘believed, dreamed and dared to do things.”

Hettigoda Industries company director Vidyani Hettigoda echoed the general sentiment that women had a long road ahead to leadership.

Africa Nazarene University vice chancellor Leah Marangu emphasized the importance of education. “There is a need to replace traditional teaching methods with integrated ones. This will not only help women increase their knowledge but also follow their passion,” she said.

A key point raised during the discussion was that women need to be more vocal about their thoughts and demands. “Women are shy in asking for what they deserve. It is high time we become more vocal and be the person we want to be,” concluded Standard Chartered Bank global head, mobile money, transaction banking, wholesale bank Namita Lal.

“I believe that commercial broadcasting is for consumers while public broadcasting is for citizens” says DD Sahyadri director general Mukesh Sharma, highlighting the need for a pubcaster at a time when commercial broadcasting has pipped it at the post.

Recorded at DD’s plush new studio using five high definition cameras, Shiledar Rashtranirmitiche comprises audio videos created for each of the twelve achievers by program executive Sunita Godbole. These clips have the chosen personalities talking about their achievements in various fields, along with anecdotes from the past.
In the show, Deo says: “Previously, songs were only meant for the ears, now, a song cannot be heard without watching it as well” while Tabassum revisits her 44 years with Doordarshan and how she evolved from AIR to DD.

Says public prosecutor Nikam: “I always make sure the DD camera is there when I am speaking after a case because it reaches the remotest corners. It is the only news that gives you correct facts.” Dr Goel too favours DD saying it covers news that is usually left aside by the commercial television channels. “Lots of health issues are brought out through shows on DD that aren’t done by other channels so much,” he says.

On his part, Singh urges DD to telecast shows that highlight the critical role played by policemen and doctors so that people are aware of how tough their job is rather than simply criticising them. Watch the show at 10pm on 12 November on DD Sahyadri.
