  • Star Sports pockets Rs 150+ crore in sponsorship for India – SA cricket series

Star Sports pockets Rs 150+ crore in sponsorship for India – SA cricket series

MUMBAI: Star India president – sports Nitin Kukreja is a happy man. With three co-presenting sponsors and seven associate sponsors on board for the India – South Africa cricket series, Star Sports has so far pocketed more than Rs 150 crore in sponsorships, even as more deals are being negotiated.

Beginning 2 October, the Mahatma Gandhi – Nelson Mandela series will have three T20s, five ODIs and four Test matches, which will be played over a span of two months. This in turn offers the channel a huge inventory to generate revenue.

A source close to the development informs Indiantelevision.com that the three co-presenting sponsors for the series namely PayTM, Raymond and Lava have paid approximately Rs 20 crore each. On the other hand, the seven associate sponsors – Maruti Suzuki, Airtel, Idea, Intex Led TV, Hero, Pernod, and OLX have shelled out approximately Rs 13 crore each, taking the total amount that Star India has earned in sponsorship to Rs 151 crore. Moreover, the broadcaster is in final stages of negotiations with a few more brands for the India – South Africa series.

In terms of ad rates, the 10 second slot during T-20 matches has been priced between Rs 2.5 – 3 lakhs. ODIs and Tests have been priced at Rs 1 lakh and Rs 70 thousand respectively, the source adds.

This is PayTM’s first series in the four years title sponsor deal, which it earned by outbidding Micromax. PayTM sealed the deal for Rs 203.28 crore, which is to be paid over the four year term. Maxus in association with GroupM ESP properties was instrumental in cracking the deal for PayTM.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Maxus managing partner Navin Khemka says, “We could not have asked for a better series to kickstart the deal. It’s bang in the middle of the festive season, a period where brands spend maximum. The success or failure of the cricket series will be decided by the quality of cricket played on the field.”

CAA Kwan COO Indranil Das Blah is of the opinion that the series will spell success for BCCI and broadcaster Star Sports. “India VS South Africa is a marquee contest and hence advertisers and sponsors will show interest in the initial stages but the annual fate will depend on the performance. The festive season is when brands unveil a lot of new launches, so timing-wise, it cannot be better,” he says.

Another media planner with condition of anonymity adds, “To me, the Rs 20 crore figure seems inflated. I think Rs 13 – 14 crore is what they are getting and that’s a good bet. If the series starts well, the numbers will be delightful for Star. The ad rates are realistic and can go much higher for last moment entrants if the series gets poised.”

  • Freedom of speech and expression cannot be “absolute”: Supreme Court

Freedom of speech and expression cannot be “absolute”: Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: While holding that freedom of speech and expression cannot be “absolute,” the Supreme Court refused to quash criminal charges against Marathi poet Vasant Dattatraya Gurjar for penning an alleged vulgar and obscene poem on Mahatma Gandhi in 1994.

Putting vulgar and obscene words in the mouth of “historically respected personalities” like Gandhi cannot pass the “contemporary community standards test” meant to adjudge the obscenity of an alleged literary work, Justices Dipak Misra and P C Pant said.

At the same time, the court upheld the Bombay High Court’s decision of not quashing charge under section 292 (sale, publication of obscene books) under the IPC framed against bank employee Devidas Ramchandra Tuljapurkar for publishing the “vulgar and obscene” poem on Gandhi in 1994 in an in-house magazine of which he was an editor. The bank employee had challenged framing of charges against him.

However, the Court quashed the criminal proceedings against the printers and publishers of the magazine in which the poem penned by Gurjar was published, saying they have already tendered an unconditional apology.

The bench asked Tuljapurkar, the then editor of in-house magazine of Bank of Maharashtra Employees Union, to express his point of view before the lower court during the trial. The bench noted that the publisher published the poem “Gandhi Mala Bhetala” in 1994 and “immediately” after coming to know its impact; he tendered an unconditional apology in the next issue of the magazine.

“Once he has tendered the unconditional apology even before the inception of the proceedings and almost more than two decades have passed, we are inclined to quash the charge framed against him as well as the printer. We are disposed to quash the charge against the printer, as it is submitted that he had printed as desired by the publisher. Hence, they stand discharged,” the bench said.

“Freedom of speech and expression has to be given a broad canvas, but it has to have inherent limitations, which are permissible within the constitutional parameters. We have already opined that freedom of speech and expression as enshrined under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution is not absolute in view of Article 19(2) of the Constitution. We reiterate the said right is a right of great value and transcends and with the passage of time and growth of culture, it has to pave the path of ascendancy, but it cannot be put in the compartment of absoluteness. There is constitutional limitation attached to it,” the bench said.

Amitabh Bachchan unveils Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in London

NEW DELHI: Amitabh Bachchan unveiled a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Parliament Square in London in the presence of British Prime Minister David Cameron and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Bachchan said he was honoured, humbled and felt touched.

Bachchan also read out an excerpt from Gandhi’s The World of Tomorrow on the occasion at the unveiling over the weekend. Gopal Gandhi, grandson of the Mahatma, was also present, apart from Lord Meghnad Desai and his wife.

In a message on Twitter, Bachchan later said the respect and dignity given to him was so humbling. Prior to the unveiling, he described the forthcoming event as ‘nerve trepidation.’

“A historic moment and a historic presence. I am honoured and humbled. I am so touched and honoured to have been given this pride of place at this most prestigious occasion,” Bachchan wrote on his official blog srbachchan.tumblr.com.

The statue is the result of efforts of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust (London) and its trustee Lord Meghnad Desai. The large size nine foot bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi has been made by British sculptor Philip Jackson, who depicted it from Gandhi’s photographs wrapped in a shawl to shield himself from London’s cold during his visit to 10 Downing Street, London, in 1931 as the leader of Indian National Movement.

  • American brewery apologizes for beer bearing Gandhi name but claims it meant no harm

American brewery apologizes for beer bearing Gandhi name but claims it meant no harm

NEW DELHI: A brewery from Connecticut which has brought out a beer with an image of Mahatma Gandhi has apologized for the name of its double India pale ale – Gandhi-Bot – but maintains the drink is meant as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

The New England Brewing Co., located in Woodbridge, describes the beer as “aromatic and fully vegetarian,” adding that Gandhi-Bot is “an ideal aid for self-purification and the seeking of truth and love.” The can in which the beer is sold features an image of the Mahatma who shunned liquor describing it as social evil and led non-violent movements against the British rule in India.

The brewing company has apologized for the label saying their “intent was not to offend anyone but rather pay homage and celebrate a man who we respect greatly.” The company said they apologize to any Indian who finds the label offensive.

“Our intent is not to offend anyone but rather pay homage and celebrate a man who we respect greatly. We take great care in creating a product we hope will not be abused in the manner that Mahatma Gandhi spoke of when referencing alcohol,” it said.

“We also ask our supporters and fans to refrain from arguing on our page with those who may be upset by our label. We want to do our best to be culturally sensitive and respectful,” the company further stated on its Facebook page.

The apology comes after a lawyer filed a petition in Hyderabad saying that Gandhi’s image on alcohol cans was “condemnable” and punishable under Indian laws. The petition states that the beer can amounts to offenses under the Indian Prevention of Insults to the National Honour Act of 1971, a local newspaper reported.

“So many Indian people here in America love our tribute to him. Gandhi’s granddaughter and grandson have seen the label and have expressed their admiration of the label. We hope that you understand our true intent and learn to respect our method and the freedom we have to show our reverence for Gandhi,” the apology read.

According to a BBC report, it was unclear which relatives of Gandhi the company was referring to.

However another newspaper reported from New Delhi that several of Gandhi’s relatives are critical of the American company’s product. Tushar Gandhi, a great-grandson, reportedly said the family was not consulted in advance about the use of Gandhi’s name or image and that family members are considering legal action over what he described as an insult to Indians. “How can anyone think of using Mahatma Gandhi’s picture on a bottle of alcoholic product? All his life he abhorred alcohol drinking and spoke against it,” he said.

A grandson, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, said the use of his image was “crass and silly” and expressed concern about the commodification of his grandfather’s image.

Meanwhile, many Indian-American liquor store owners in the state are torn between the strong demand for the beer and their reaction to its name. Bhaskar Sureja, owner of Essex Wine & Spirits, told the Hartford Courant that though he finds the name insulting, he will continue to sell the beer, which is very popular. “A lot of customers ask for it. I have to do my business according to what my customers need,” Sureja told the Hartford Courant. “My personal feeling is not how I do business,” he added.

However, Ashok Patel of the Liquor Outlet in Southington told the paper that he would not sell the beer “out of respect.” “It’s about the image of the country,” he said.

But beyond its apology, the company has not said whether it would withdraw the beer or change its name, but has said on its Facebook page that it has doubled its production of Gandhi-Bot every year since it was released several years ago, and that customers still struggle to find cans of it on shelves or wait in long lines at the brewery to fill large glass of the beer.

But this isn’t the first time that New England Brewing has felt friction over one of its beer labels. Its Imperial Stout Trooper label featured a Star Wars storm trooper helmet, which resulted in a cease-and-desist letter from Lucas Films. In response, the brewery disguised the storm trooper helmet with Groucho Marx glasses, the Hartford Courant reported.

Names of other New England Brewing beers include: Fuzzy Baby Ducks, Sea Hag, Elm City Lager, 668 The Neighbor of the Beast and Wet Willie. The brewery also makes a brew called Zapata-Bot, named after Emiliano Zapata, a leader of the Mexican revolution

On Vijayadashami, the traditional Dasara procession (locally known as Jamboo Savari) is held on the streets of Mysore city. The main attraction of this procession is the idol of the Goddess Chamundeshwari which is placed in a golden howdah on the top of a decorated elephant. This idol is worshipped by the royal couple and other invitees before it is taken around in the procession. Colourful tableaux, dance groups, music bands, armed forces, folklores, the royal identities, decorated elephants, horses and camels form a part of the procession which starts from the Mysore Palace and culminates at a place called Bannimantap, where the Banni tree (Prosopis spicigera) is worshipped. According to a legend of the Mahabharata, Banni tree was used by the Pandavas to hide their arms during their one-year period of Agnatavasa (living life incognito). Before undertaking any warfare, the kings traditionally worshipped this tree to help them emerge victorious in the war.

The Dasara festivities would culminate on the night of Vijayadashami with an event held in the grounds at Bannimantap known as Panjina Kavayithu (torch-light parade).
