“Asia is a priority market for Lionsgate”: Kevin Beggs

CANNES: Lionsgate is scrutinising the Asian market.  For the company which has been in the channel business in Asia through joint ventures for the past five years, the region now features in the priority market list.

Addressing the audience at MIPCOM 2014, Lionsgate chairman Kevin Beggs said that with its Hong Kong office, the company is also pushing into India. “Shows like Orange is the New Black in China represent a huge revenue growth for us, which before was pretty close to nothing,” he said, adding that while the region is temperamental in a way, it is also very promising.

The theatrical side of Lionsgate is in deep discussions about bringing more films into Asia. “We are looking at developing shows that could find itself in the market now. It’s a priority for the company, but it is also an emerging market for us, that will go a long way at making us strong, and we are focused on it,” informed Beggs.

Lionsgate, the creators of ‘Orange is the New Black’, ‘Manhattan’, ‘Mad Men’ is a firm believer of having a global look, while making a show. “Both Mad Men and Orange Is The New Black are high quality shows, which we were hoping would be liked by the global audiences. It has exceeded expectations,” he said.

The company keeps its eyes open for finding great partnerships across the globe. “We are talking to people all the time. We are finding the perfect shows that we can co-commission or commission simply for the UK or Germany or France pay market. It is a high priority for us,” informed Beggs.

Lionsgate has auctioned many formats so far in different markets. “We always look for the right thing to adapt,” he added.

Beggs also touched upon the streaming services that have started playing a key role. “While television has ad breaks with 42 or 43 minutes of drama, the streaming services have no advertising obligation. And they have a much longer running time and no breaks. The storytelling of ‘Orange is the New Black’ on Netflix is very different. It takes a lot of digressions on the shows, and because people will re-watch, one has a lot of freedom to tell a story in a much more serialised and novelised way. There is no need for a dramatic ending before a commercial break, so that people can come back. So the pacing is interesting from our standpoint as well,” he said.

He feels that in a scenario like this, the writers have to do a great job and also as producers “we need to understand the audience and what would hold them back. Audiences can watch the whole season of a series in a few hours and would wait for the next season, which would take a year. So this is different,” he informed.

Beggs believes that there will be more streaming players in the future. “It the next two years or so, there will be six to seven new streaming services or may be more,” he stated. Citing the reason for the change, which could see some big players jumping into it, he said that streaming business, on a pay basis, does not need a huge number of subscribers to breakeven.  “Brands will follow where the audiences are,” he concluded.

  • MGM Channel is now AMC

    MGM Channel is now AMC

MUMBAI: AMC Networks has announced that its premiere movie channel MGM will now be renamed as AMC, starting today. This will give way to the first distribution of AMC Networks outside of North America, showing the company’s intent to extend itself beyond the US.

Later this year, AMC will be launching locally-versioned channel feeds across Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. This will be accompanied by AMC VOD, HD and TV Everywhere services.

AMC Networks’ original series Halt & Catch Fire and The Divide, produced by AMC Studios, will be one of the first original series to premiere on the channel internationally this year. This apart, the channel will also feature films from big libraries including MGM, Paramount and Sony.

AMC Networks COO Ed Carroll said through a statement:  “In recent years, AMC has re-defined dramatic storytelling on Pay-TV via its cinematic approach to original series, including ‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Mad Men,’ and ‘Breaking Bad.’ It is our intention to replicate our successful US strategy, extending the AMC brand worldwide and creating a broad pipeline for our original content.”

AMC Global and Sundance Channel Global president Bruce Tuchman said, “There is a huge appetite for AMC original programming abroad. That interest, coupled with our successful history of curating films from all the major studios to complement our original programming, gives us a great opportunity to make AMC Global a top-tier entertainment destination worldwide. We are confident AMC Global will be a valuable addition to our distribution partners’ platforms as we continue to work together to grow their business.”

Tuchman is responsible for the programming, marketing, business and strategic development of its global networks.

Liberty Global managing director programming Jeroen Bergman added: “AMC Networks has an excellent creative and business track record and we are pleased to offer this premier entertainment destination to our subscribers.”

Telefónica Director Global Content Ignacio Fernandez Vega stated: “We are delighted to add the new AMC channel to Movistar TV.  With this new addition, we continue to consolidate our content offering and positioning the channel as a leading pay TV platform in Spain and Latin America.”

Indovision VP director Handhi Kentjono said: “AMC has established itself as a high quality popular network with outstanding entertainment and we are confident that our subscribers will respond strongly to this new offering. We are thrilled to continue our long and successful partnership with AMC Networks and its channels.”

Last month, the company announced the re-brand of its recently-acquired Chellomedia business (which included the MGM Channel) to AMC Networks International. AMC Networks International consists of six operating units namely Asia-Pacific, Central Europe, Iberia, Latin America, Zone (EMEA) and DMC, a global media technology and distribution company.

Halt and Catch Fire hails from the executive producers of AMC’s celebrated series ‘Breaking Bad.’ The series captures the rise of the personal computing era in the early 1980s, during which an unlikely trio – a visionary, an engineer and a prodigy – take personal and professional risks in the race to build a computer that will change the world as they know it. The 10-episode series is created by Chris Cantwell and Chris Rogers and executive produced by showrunner Jonathan Lisco (‘Southland’) and Gran Via Production’s Mark Johnson (‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Rectify,’ ‘Diner,’ ‘Rain Man’) and Melissa Bernstein (‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Rectify’). Filmed on location in Atlanta, the series stars Lee Pace (‘Lincoln,’ ‘Pushing Daisies’) as Joe MacMillan, Scoot McNairy (‘Argo’) as Gordon Clark, Mackenzie Davis (‘Smashed’) as Cameron Howe, Kerry Bishé (‘Argo,’ ‘Red State’) as Donna Clark and Toby Huss (‘Cowboys & Aliens’) as John Bosworth.

‘The Divide’ is an eight-episode series written by and co-created by the Academy Award and Emmy nominated Richard LaGravenese (‘Behind the Candelabra,’ ‘The Fisher King,’ ‘Water for Elephants,’ ‘The Ref,’ ‘The Bridges of Madison County’) with Tony Goldwyn (‘Scandal,’ ‘Conviction,’ ‘Justified,’ ‘Damages,’ ‘Dexter’) co-creating the series and directing the premiere episode. ‘The Divide’ is a thought-provoking and suspenseful drama that explores the personal cost of morality, ambition, ethics, politics, and race in today’s justice system through the eyes of Christine Rosa played by Marin Ireland (‘Homeland,’ ‘Boss,’ ‘Side Effects’), an impassioned caseworker with The Innocence Initiative, and Adam Page played by Damon Gupton (‘The Newsroom,’ ‘Prime Suspect’), an equally passionate district attorney and political rising star.

  • A.R. Rahman gives music for ‘Million Dollar Arm’

A.R. Rahman gives music for ‘Million Dollar Arm’

NEW DELHI: Suraj Sharma, who played the young man stranded on a raft with the tiger in Ang Lee’s ‘Life of Pi,’ and Madhur Mittal who portrayed Salim in the best Oscar winning movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ along with actor Jon Hamm feature in the new Disney film ‘Million Dollar Arm’ being released this weekend in the United States.

With its release last Friday, ‘Million Dollar Arm’ clashed with the giant ‘Godzilla’ remake distributed by Warner Bros.

The film has been directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay written by Tom McCarthy. The film is based on the true story of baseball pitchers Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel who were discovered by sports agent J.B. Bernstein after winning a reality show competition. The film also stars Bill Paxton as pitching coach Tom House, Alan Arkin and Lake Bell. The film’s music is composed by A.R. Rahman. The movie is produced by Joe Roth, Mark Ciardi, and Gordon Gray for Walt Disney Pictures.

By the standards of the studio known for big-budget blockbusters, ‘Million Dollar Arm’ is a small film, with a budget of $25 million, a fraction of the $200 million it cost to make the soon-to-be-released ‘Maleficent’ with Angelina Jolie.

But Walt Disney Studios’ executive vice president of film distribution Dave Hollis said, “We believe in great stories, both big and small, that depict values such as courage, ambition, hard work and family. ‘Million Dollar Arm’ is a great story that has those unique human themes throughout.”

‘Million Dollar Arm’ was shot partly in India. Jon Hamm – who played the ‘Mad Men’ character Don Draper – plays sports agent J B Bernstein who in a desperate bid to drum up clients goes to India to find baseball pitchers among the country’s cricket-loving sportsmen. It is a real-life story that warmed hearts over at the Walt Disney Co.

The first part of ‘Million Dollar Arm’ shows a hot and chaotic Mumbai where JB struggles to get his improbable venture off the ground with a reality show. After frustrating rounds of tryouts, the American agent finds two strong arms in Rinku and Dinesh in rural India and brings them to Southern California, where they undergo training before being shown to Major League Baseball scouts.

The young men find themselves struggling with the culture, the lifestyle and, most importantly, the business expectations that JB has from them. His neighbour Brenda, a doctor played by Lake Bell, works to suture the fraying relationship in time to save their chances of making it in American baseball.

Despite working in conditions Hamm termed “remarkably warm and challenging,” the baseball tale with a global twist gave Hamm not only his first lead role in film but one that was decidedly more upbeat than the ad man that made him famous on television.

“I love the fact that it has a family component to it and it has redemption,” said Hamm. “You leave the movie theater with a smile on your face. It’s a nice alternative to my other on-screen persona, who is a little bit darker.”

Bell and Hamm, who are friends in real life, both highlighted one of the great advantages of working on a Disney film: for a change, they can send anyone in their families to see it and not have to worry about uncomfortable scenes. “It is nice to be part of a project that my sister can take her kids to,” said Hamm.

Prior to ‘Million Dollar Arm,’ Hamm played an FBI agent in Ben Affleck’s 2010 crime caper ‘The Town’ and a part as the loathsome lothario in the 2011 women-driven comedy ‘Bridesmaids.’

“I think you can make an argument that I was actually the star of ‘Bridesmaids,’” he joked.

As he films the final episodes of ‘Mad Men’ to air next year on the AMC cable network, Hamm said he has no road map for his career post-Don Draper, although ‘Million Dollar Arm’ fit perfectly into his loose plan.

The movie stars actors Suraj Sharma of ‘Life of Pi’ fame and Madhur Mittal of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

“I just want to work on things I find interesting in some way and this is a perfect example of something I find interesting,” said Hamm, who happens to be a big baseball fan.
