    Net users: India follows leader China; Japan, Indonesia next in queue: Report

    MUMBAI: South Korea and Japan are the leading two countries in Asia with regards to internet penetration reaching 91 per cent in 2016. The two are followed by Singapore (84pc), Taiwan (83pc), Azerbaijan (79pc), and Hong Kong (79pc).

    China leads in terms of overall number of internet users in 2016 (730 million), followed by India (290 million), Japan (115 million) and Indonesia (63.1 million). The expansion of broadband was for a long time a phenomenon limited to the developed economies, with narrow-band dial-up access being the norm in the majority of the developing countries of the region, WiseGuy Consultants reported Marketers Media as stating.

    However this has been gradually changing. In those economies, there is now increasing access to broadband, both DSL and cable modem platforms have both proved popular, with DSL establishing a clear advantage. More recently, one ha sseen the arrival of FttX as an alternative platform for broadband access in Asia. There also continues to be considerable activity in the broadband markets across Asia including amongst the many number of smaller countries such as Azerbaijan, Maldives and Macau.

    China leads the fixed broadband market in terms of both overall subscribers and market penetration. Subscribers reached 213 million in 2016 and market penetration reached 53pc. Although China boasts the largest number of broadband connections in the world, annual growth rates are subsiding as housing penetration reaches levels indicative of market maturity.

    China Telecom and China Unicom are the largest suppliers of fixed broadband. Fixed broadband levels in China are expected to continue rise more gradually due to a confluence of factors that includes telecom operators seeking revenue growth, a government seeking to reach ambitious targets, the increasing wealth of end users and digital media giants seeking new audience.

    However, fixed broadband services will continue to grow based on the sheer volume of data traffic as the market shifts from:
    • Connecting people to connecting devices;
    • Increasing usage of cloud services;
    • Increasing bandwidth demands from higher quality HD and 4K streaming services.

    Key highlights of the fixed broadband market in Asia in 2016:
    • South Korea and Japan are the leading two countries in Asia with regards to internet penetration.
    • Behind South Korea and Japan are Singapore, Taiwan, Azerbaijan, and Hong Kong.

    NEW DELHI: The Cable and Satellite Broadcasters Association of Asia is holding its next convention in Macao later this year for senior executives from across the region and around the world to come together to tackle issues facing the industry.

    CASBAA, Asia’s largest non-profit media association serving the multi-channel audio-visual content creation and distribution industry, will hold the 22nd annual Convention at Studio City in Macao from 7 to 10 November.

    CASBAA CEO Christopher Slaughter said: “It will be the first time CASBAA has ever held an event in Macau, and we are thrilled to be able to bring the region’s pay-TV industry together to experience all that this exciting enclave has to offer.”

    CASBAA Board of Directors Chairman Sompan Charumilinda of True Visions agreed, adding, “The Board has overwhelmingly endorsed the move to Macau as part of the Association’s ongoing efforts to keep our annual Convention fresh and invigorating.  We are confident delegates, speakers, and sponsors will find that the new venue and location will both contribute to another excellent CASBAA Convention. Furthermore, Studio City provides us with a bigger footprint for the Convention than we’ve ever experienced, which will offer many advantages for networking functions and private meeting rooms that our delegates are sure to enjoy.”

    “The CASBAA Convention has always been a great opportunity for senior executives from across the region and around the world to come together, strategically timed to be the most important industry event in the fourth quarter of the year,” said Co-Board Member Responsible for Convention Todd Miller, who is CEO of Celestial Tiger Entertainment. “This year, by choosing Macau’s Studio City, we’re adding a certain ‘show-biz’ quality to the event.”

    Property President of Studio City JD Clayton said, “We’re very delighted to welcome CASBAA to Macau for the very first time. As a Hollywood-inspired and cinematically-themed integrated resort, Studio City is definitely the perfect venue for the CASBAA Convention. We look forward to collaborating with CASBAA to create a successful event this year and to showcase the unrivaled excitement of Studio City, Asia’s Entertainment Capital, to the participating delegates, in addition to our TV studio facility for production-oriented attendees.”

    The move is just one of many innovations for the annual industry gathering.  “This year, we are making a concerted effort to ensure that all the links in the value chain are present at the Convention,” said Co-Board Member Responsible for Convention Amit Malhotra, VP & GM Studio Entertainment at The Walt Disney Company. “In particular, we’re working together to bring a critical mass of operators from across the region to Macau.”

    The CASBAA Convention will feature two full days of conference plenary sessions, keynote speakers, panel discussions, workshops, networking opportunities, and social activities. Topics will include best business practices, emerging market trends, technological developments, new programming strategies and offerings, and the broadcast regulatory landscape in the region.   In addition, the Convention will also feature CASBAA’s annual Policy Roundtable and Executive Roundtable. Both Roundtable events are invitation-only, closed-door forums, dedicated to in-depth discussions among select groups of industry stakeholders.

    “With a host of new market entrants, new business models, and ongoing disruption and technological innovation, the industry is embracing change at a deep level,” said Slaughter.  “The Convention will present a wide array of eminent speakers and panelists to explore various aspects of change at this critical juncture in our industry’s history.”

In sharp contrast to December’s Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA), there are no nominations shared with the remainder of Asia or the Middle East. The festival defines the Asian Region as “East of the Suez”. It still maintains several voting members from Iran, a country that has previously won big at the awards.

    With five nominations, Ann Hui’s biographical drama The Golden Era (China – Hong Kong) has the highest number of nominations for any single film, but it has not been recognised for Best Film.

    Overall, films from China – including Hong Kong co-productions – are the most recognised with 26 nominations out of 74 in all categories. Three local Hong Kong films – That Demon WithinGolden Chickensss and The Midnight After -score an additional three nominations.

    Along with Haider, China’s Black Coal, Thin Ice and Blind Massage are the next most recognised films, with four nominations apiece. They will compete for Best Film with Japan’s The Light Shines Only There and from South Korea, Hill of Freedom and Ode to My Father.

    From South Korea, 10 films have received 16 nominations. Two films received three nominations apiece: Hong Sang-soo’s Hill of Freedom (including Best Actor for Japan’s Kase Ryo) and Kim Seong-hun’s A Hard Day. The two films screened in Venice and Cannes last year.

    From Japan, 12 films have received 15 nominations. Only two films received more than one nomination: Oh Mipo’s The Light Shines Only There and Miike Takashi’s Over Your Dead Body. In addition to Best Film, Oh’s film is nominated for Takada Ryo’s screenplay and Ikewaki Chizuru’s supporting actress performance.

    The cinema of Southeast Asia is almost completely overlooked in the nominations. Just two films are recognised: Indonesia’s The Raid 2 directed by Gareth Evans, and the Philippines’ From What is Before directed by Lav Diaz. Diaz has a Best Director nominee for his 338-minute drama.
