    ITV celebrates 50th birthday in May

    MUMBAI: UK commercial network ITV will celebrate its 50th anniversary in May be entering the Rose d’Or Hall of Fame.

    The channel will be hosting its 50th Anniversary Press launch event and dinner at the Rose d’Or Festival in Lucerne, to launch its celebrations and special anniversary programmes. The Rose d’Or Festival runs from 3 – 8 May 2005 in Lucerne, Switzerland.

    To start the festivities ITV will be inducted into the Rose d’Or Hall of Fame in the presence of ITV programme director Nigel Pickard, ITV executives and ITV stars. The honour recognises ITV’s achievements as the most popular broadcaster and producer in Britain since its first transmission, back in 1955. The channel has made soaps and entertainment shows as well as the prestigious and influential South Bank Show.

    Pickard says, “It’s a great honour for ITV to be inducted into the Rose d’Or Hall of Fame, especially in this our 50th year. This year’s festival provides us with the perfect backdrop for unveiling our anniversary plans and we are very much looking forward to the event in Lucerne.”

    Rose d’Or CEO Georges Luks said,” The Hall of Fame is where we honour those who have made the greatest contribution to the industry, the most creative, the most original and the most successful. We are privileged to see ITV join the roll call of honour in the Rose d’Or Hall of Fame, in well deserved recognition of ITV’s fantastic 50 years of broadcasting and its unparalleled editorial achievements.”

    A popular television show that will be inducted into the Hall of Fame is Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Considered by some to be the most innovative cult television show of all time Monty Python’s Flying Circus was and remains a phenomenon.

    On the BBC for four seasons between 1969 and 1974, the total of 45 episodes were the showcase for classic scenes such as Dead Parrot and The Lumberjack Song which are considered seminal milestones in the history of comedy, both by industry practitioners and viewers alike.

    Meanwhile Sir Bob Geldof will recieve this year’s Rose d’Or Charity Award which will be presented in remembrance of the late actor Sir Peter Ustinov. Geldof’s is being recognised for his passionate determination to take action in the face of human suffering. He created Live Aid, the greatest fund raising concert ever, which commemorates its 20th Anniversary on July 13th 2005.

    Throughout his career Geldorf has highlighted political solutions to the global issues of poverty and disease. Calling upon governments to cancel third world debt and acting as a passionate advocate of Nelson Mandela’s fight against Aids, Geldof’s activism, fight against global inequity and compassion have earned him this tribute

    MUMBAI: The Rose d’Or Festival announced winners of the 44th annual Golden Rose awards at a ceremony held at the KKL building in Lucerne, Switzerland on 17 April.

    Ant and Dec took double golds, winning in both categories the Best game show host and the Best variety for their Saturday night take away. Martin Freeman picked up the best sitcom actor Golden Rose for his role in Hardware and Harry Hill took away the best comedy actor award for Harry Hills TV Burp.

    This year, for the first time, Golden Roses for best actor, actress and host were awarded along with Golden Roses for best programs. UK’s Shane Richie scooped the top prize as best actor in soap for his role in East Enders , which is the first soap to be honoured at the festival, says a company release.

    Golden Roses awarded the best programme awards in eight program categories including, comedy, sitcom, soaps, variety, game show, reality show, music, art and specials.

    The 2004 honorary Golden Rose was presented to one of worlds’ leading creators of innovative and successful television content John de Mol, chairman and chief creative officer of Endemol.

    Hosted by Jon Culshaw, the star studded event featured actors like Roger Moore, Harry Belafonte and Lord of the Rings star Christopher Lee.

    Rose d’Or Festival CEO George Luks said, “This was a dream night, we planned to emphasise on the glamour and entertainment of the prestigious Golden Rose Awards and the ceremony reflected this in everyway. I am delighted that so many stars of TV and film chose to be with us on this special evening, bringing the Golden Rose to Lucerne for the first time”.

    The honorary Golden Rose recognises performers, companies and individuals, who have made outstanding contribution to the entertainment industry.

    Rose d’Or Festival pays tribute to Peter Ustinov

    MUMBAI: The Rose d’Or Festival, commencing from 13 April – 18 April in Lucerne announced a tribute to Sir Peter on his demise in Geneva. He was aged 82. The Bal de la Rose d’Or is to be held at the lakeside Hotel Schweizerhof in Lucerne, Switzerland on Saturday, 17 April.

    Sir Peter was to have been the Guest of Honour at the Bal de la Rose d’Or, a charity gala on behalf of UNICEF, which takes place on April 17th. Actor, producer, playwright, novelist and raconteur, Sir Peter had received many awards and tributes throughout his extraordinary life and was knighted in 1990 in recognition of his artistic and humanitarian achievements; he was scheduled to attend the Bal de la Rose d’Or as the recipient of the first Rose d’Or Charity Award in honour of his thirty-five years as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Born in London in 1921 to Russian, German, French and Italian ancestry, Sir Peter said that he had ‘automatic loyalty to something like the United Nations’ and this was reflected in his tireless work for UNICEF.

    The Bal de la Rose d’Or marks the inaugural Rose d’Or Charity Award . Rose d’Or Festival CEO Georges Luks says “We were very saddened to hear the tragic news of Sir Peter’s death. It was a great honour for the Rose d’Or Festival that he was joining us for our first Bal de la Rose d’Or. The Rose d’Or Charity Award will now be given in honour of his memory and his humanitarian achievements”.

    Sir Roger Moore, Harry Belafonte and Nana Mouskouri, fellow UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors of Sir Peter’s would be among the stars attending the Bal de la Rose d’Or, as is Christopher Lee. Shashi Tharoor, the Under Secretary General of the United Nations will also be present at the event, which will now include a tribute in memory of Sir Peter and his achievements, as well as raise money for UNICEF projects around the world says the release.

    Meanwhile, Rose d’Or Festival has also announced the nominations of Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Host. . For the first time in forty three years, the coveted Golden Rose Award will be awarded to individual artists as well as to programmes. The winners will be announced on Saturday 17th April at the Rose d’Or Award Ceremony.

    Golden Roses will be awarded to the Best Actor and Best Actress in the Comedy, Sitcom and Soap categories. The Golden Rose for Best Host will be awarded in the Gameshow category.

    The Best Comedy Actor nominations are Harry Hill for his role in Harry Hill’s TV Burp (UK) and Matt Lucas/David Walliams jointly for their role in Little Britain (UK). The Best Comedy Actress nominations are Karen Dunbar for The Karen Dunbar Show (UK) and Anke Engelke for her role in Ladykracher (Germany).

    In Situation Comedy, the Best Actor nominations are Hugh Laurie for his role in Forty Something (UK) and Martin Freeman for Hardware (UK). Angela Finnochiaro is nominated for Best Actress in a Situation Comedy for Mammamia! (Italy) and Felicitas Woll for her role in Berlin, Berlin (Germany).

    Shane Ritchie is contending for a Golden Rose as Best Actor in a Soap for his role in EastEnders (UK) alongside Ryan Maloney of Neighbours (Aus). Sally Lindsay is nominated as Best Actress in a Soap for her role in Coronation Street and Benedicte Delmas is also nominated in this category for Saint Tropez (France).

    Best Game Show Host nominations go to Jimmy Carr for Distraction (UK) and Anthony McPartlin & Declan Donnelly (jointly) for Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.
