    ‘Lost’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy, ‘Weeds’ competing at Golden Globe Awards

    MUMBAI: Nominations for the 64th edition of the Golden Globes have been announced.

    ABC’s hospital soap Grey’s Anatomy and Showtime’s Weeds got four Golden Globe nominations, including best drama and best comedy, respectively.

    Keeping Grey’s Anatomy company for best drama are Lost, 24, Heroes, and Big Love. For comedy the nominees are Desperate Housewives, Weeds, Entourage, The Office and Ugly Betty. In India the Golden Globe Awards will air on Star World next month.

    HBO led the television categories with 14 nominations, followed by ABC with 11, NBC with nine and Showtime with six. HBO’s Elizabeth I and Mrs. Harris got nominated for best mini series or TV movie. Tsunami The Aftermath which will air in India on HBO on 26 December picked up acting nominations for Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sophie Okonedo and Toni Collette.

    On the film side Babel with its multiple narrative threads picked up six nominations along with Martin Scorcese’s gangster epic The Departed. Director Clint Eastwood got two nominations for directing the war films Flags Of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima. So it is a Clint vs Marty showdown again. Leonardo Dicaprio got two nominations for acting in The Departed and Blood Diamond. On the actress side Helen Mirren is the favourite for the playing Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen.

    Star Movies to present a recap of ‘Lost’ tomorrow

    MUMBAI: Fans of the action adventure show Lost which airs on Star Movies can catch up if they have missed certain episodes.

    On 7 September 7th at 9 pm the channel presents Lost: Revelation. This offers a recap of the first season and what has happened so far in the second season in a one-hour package. This special episode offers viewers a fresh perspective of the show.

    For the uninitiated the show deals with survivors of a plane crash who are stranded on an island. Viewers will discover the complete story of the grueling first 48 days on the island for the fuselage survivors and tailies after the crash of Oceanic flight 815.

    The channel says that since the beginning, Lost has mystified and intrigued viewers with its characters and storytelling. The first season dealt with the fuselage survivors, the hatch and a failed attempt to get off the island. Season two continues these stories and also introduces viewers to the survivors of the tail section.

    Lost: Revelation puts these two seasons together in a linear fashion that provides an illuminating view on one compelling story. See the sequence of the aftermath of the failed raft attempt, the opening of the hatch, how the tail section and fuselage survivors lived separately and the unwitting intersections of their lives, and how both groups ultimately collided in one catastrophic moment.

    MUMBAI: In order to expanding its network and channel brands across multiple platforms and connecting viewers with their favorite shows anytime and anywhere, the Disney-ABC Television Group in the US has announced that it will offer enhanced features and additional content, including over 100 short-form videos each week at www.ABC.com.

    ABC Entertainment VP digital media Alexis Rapo says, “We are adding a significant amount of unique content, especially video, to ABC.com to make it the primary destination for fans of our programming.”

    “We have increased the amount of short-form video content including, trailers and originals, by 330 per cent from last season. We are seeing success already — on the premiere day for Dancing with the Stars. 60 per cent of the video viewed on the site was for that show alone.”

    Fresh to ABC.com this year are new sites for five returning series The Bachelor, Dancing with the Stars, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Greys Anatomy and Lost. There are also sites for four new series The Knights of Prosperity, The Nine, Six Degrees and Ugly Betty. Additional content includes blogs, podcasts, behind-the-scenes footage, and interviews with the cast and producers.

    Dancing with the Stars gets a new website design with enhanced features and content. There is original online video content backstage interviews, dancer/celebrity spotlights, rehearsals. There is also an online voting component, a mobile SMS campaign, an online dancing game and blogs.

    Greys Anatomy has weekly podcasts with producers, weekly blogs from show writers, exclusive online behind-the-scenes features.

    For Lost ABC will be coming out with a new website design with many interactive features created for fans, as well as new viewers, including The Lost Theories Board, Lost Connections backstory feature Weekly podcasts and video podcasts with producers.

    ‘Lost’ interactive game gathering steam

    MUMBAI: In a bid to enhance the brand of the action adventure television show Lost US broadcaster ABC had launched an interactive web-based game Lost Experience in May in the US, UK and Australia.

    Currently in phase three of five of the interactive challenge, the meaning behind the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42, which play a significant role on the television series, will be revealed.

    So far, the Lost Experience has unveiled information regarding the Black Rock. The Lost Experience will continue to the premiere of the third season revealing secrets behind the mysterious Alvar Hanso and the Hanso Foundation.

    Those wishing to participate can do so by viewing a synopsis at blogs.abc.com/inside_the_experience/ which allows new participants the chance to enter into the Experience with ease.

    For the uninitiated, the Lost Experience follows a parallel storyline not featured in the television broadcast and is designed so that both fans of the series and those unfamiliar with the show can participate. The Experience provides insight to unlock some of the island’s secrets for those savvy enough to collect the clues, make the connections and find the answers.

    Although the Lost Experience is internet-based, participants should not assume that clues and story content will be limited to the online world. Any and every platform has the potential to contain hidden secrets. Given the different broadcast windows around the world, this challenge is designed in a manner that is not dependent on information specific to either Season One or Season Two, allowing those who have not yet seen either season of Lost to participate.

    Indian fans might be interested to know that the second season will see new characters coming in. Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), joins the cast as a resident of the island whose story is one of the mysteries that will be explored as the season progresses. In addition, one will discover that there are more previously unknown survivors of the crash of the ill fated flight 815 who all crashed in the tail section of the plane – Ana Lucia playde by Michelle Rodriguez who starred in the films Girlfight, The Fast and the Furious — the mysterious woman Jack met at the Sydney airport bar, Rose’s husband Bernard (Sam Anderson), Libby (Cynthia Watros)

    The most mysterious, and perhaps most important of all the new characters is Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick), who begins the second season inside the hatch, explaining the importance of the button before taking off into the woods.

    The Lost Experience is a collaboration between the executive producers from Lost, ABC, Channel 4 in the UK and Channel 7 in Australia. Lost deals with the travails and experiences of a group of survivors from a plane crash.

    Talking about the online extension in the US, UK and Australia ABC senior VP marketing Mike Benson says, “The reward we’ve always promised from the Lost Experience is information, which is currency to anyone who is a fan of the show or a participant in this game.

    “This additional form of storytelling allows us to engage current and new fans in a genuinely innovative way while delivering the same extraordinary content that ‘Lost’ provides as a television series.”

    In India, the second season of Lost will air on Star Movies from 3 August at 9 pm.

    ‘Lost’ producer Abrams leaves Disney for Warner, Paramount

    MUMBAI: With one of the biggest television shows in the US Lost under his belt J.J. Abrams is hot property. The man who also directed Mission Impossible 3 has signed a five-year film deal with Paramount Pictures and a six-year TV contract with Warner Bros.

    Together, they are worth more than $55 million.
    With this, Abrams leaves Disney’s Touchstone. ABC later this year will unveil three Abrams-produced shows. Media reports indicate that he had been there for seven years making many shows.

    However what made the difference was the fact that Disney was firm on the fact that revenue from his current shows would be included in the amount of money it would have guaranteed him each year under a new deal.

    Reports add that if Abrams’ shows for Warner are successful the sky is the limit. He will get around 35 per cent of the backend. This means revenues from syndication, DVDs, net downloads etc. His production firm is called Brad Robot.

    Abrams will get around $five million for directing a Star Trek film for Paramount and he will get some backend, should the film make a tidy profit. He is said to be keen to make films that cost less than $25 million as there are important stories that can be told.

    MUMBAI: US broadcaster ABC’s show Lost received two 2006 DVD Technical Awards for Best Commentary and Best Overall Presentation — Television Release at the VSDA Awards Show in the US.

    Entertainment Merchants Association president Bo Andersen says, “The DVDs available today feature an unprecedented amount of visual and audio quality as well as interactivity and special features for the die-hard movie fan. DVDs of Lost allow viewers to have a richer experience than when watching the programmes on television or pay-per-view, and the features that are included give legitimate retailers a huge advantage over pirated copies.”

    VSDA’s 2006 DVD Technical awards honour DVD titles that have demonstrated the most innovative and entertaining features through the use of the latest DVD technology.

    MUMBAI: Buena Vista International Television-Asia Pacific (BVITV-AP) which distributes Disney’s content has concluded its first package deal to license live action series and library features in high-definition (HD) format to the Chinese market.

    US broadcaster ABC’s show Lost and Grey’s Anatomy, which are licensed to more than 200 territories worldwide, will air on CCTVHD Channel, China’s first HD channel, by the end of this year.

    BVITV-AP senior VP, MD Steve Macallister says, “This is a groundbreaking deal and underscores our commitment to deliver the best television content to our clients in the highest quality format possible. We are delighted to bring these shows to CCTVHD viewers in China.”

    Lost won six Emmys last year and is about survivors of a plane crash who are stranded on an island. Grey’s Anatomy is a medical drama which focusses on five interns who discover that medicine and relationships can sometimes be defined in shades of grey.

    MUMBAI: Nominations for the 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in the US were announced by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

    Among the networks, HBO got 95 nominations. ABC got 64 nods while CBS managed to get 47 nominations. Surprisingly, ABC’s two hit shows Lost and Desperate Housewives failed to be nominated in the main categories.

    The awards presentation telecast awarding Emmys in 27 categories before a black-tie audience will be televised by NBC on 27 August from the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium and will be hosted by talk show host Conan O’Brien.

    The nominees for best drama series are Grey’s Anatomy, House, The Sopranos, 24 and The West Wing. Competing in the comedy series are Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office, Scrubs and Two and a Half Men.

    Discovery’s The Flight That Fought Back is competing in the television film category along with A&E’s Flight 93, and three HBO films The Girl in the Cafe, Mrs. Harris and Yesterday.

    The nominees for actor in a drama are Denis Leary for Rescue Me, Peter Krause for Six Feet Under, Christopher Meloni for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Kiefer Sutherland for 24 and Martin Sheen for the Presidential drama The West Wing.

    The actresses nominated are Kyra Sedgwick for The Closer, Geena Davis for the now cancelled ABC show Commander in Chief, Mariska Hargitay for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Frances Conroy for Six Feet Under and Allison Janney for The West Wing.

    The comic men who have ben nominated are Larry David for Curb Your Enthusiasm, Kevin James for The King of Queens, Tony Shalhoub for Monk, Steve Carell for The Office and Charlie Sheen for Two and a Half Men.

    Among the women, the nominees are Lisa Kudrow for The Comeback, Jane Kaczmarek for Malcolm in the Middle, Julia Louis-Dreyfus for The New Adventures of Old Christine, Stockard Channing for Out of Practice and Debra Messing for Will and Grace.

    The nominations have received a mixed response from critics. Some feel that the snub of Desperate Housewives which is a non traditional comedy might mean less glamour. There seems to be some agreement though that the drama shows nominated are better than Lost.

    MUMBAI: Walt Disney Co. Networks, ABC today claimed that over three million viewers have watched their online television shows, launched in May 2006. As part of a two month internet trial, the company offered full episode streaming of four of its most popular shows Desperate Housewives, Lost, Alias and Commander in Chief.

    Reuters reports that the numbers provide an early sign of demand for television content on the Web and challenge the “ad-free”, but paid content available via Apple’s iTunes.

    “The evolution of ABC.com is just one piece of our comprehensive, digital media multi-platform business initiative,” said Disney Media Networks co-chair and Disney-ABC Television Group president Anne Sweeney.

    These episodes are available online the day after they are broadcast on TV and only the last aired episode is currently available for streaming. Each online episode includes a 10-second sponsorship message from a single advertiser, followed by three commercials that air during breaks in the program.

    This allows users to rewind, fast-forward and pause shows, however, they can not skip advertisements, which automatically play at certain segments. The same shows are also available to download through iTunes for $1.99 an episode without commercials.
