IPL 2021: Is it game over for the media and advertising biz?

KOLKATA: The Indian Premier League (IPL) returned to Indian soil after two years amid great excitement but no one had expected that the tournament would come to a halt midway. The steep rise in Covid2019 cases in the country had already led a lot of people to question why the league was being staged, and a PIL on the same was filed before the Delhi high court. Yet, the bio bubble had acted like the shield of Aegis for the event – until it was breached.

On Tuesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to “postpone” the season with immediate effect. It is not certain whether the 31 remaining matches will be played in another window. The move came after multiple players across teams tested Covid positive.

A tournament which is valued at thousands of crores, a season that was expected to fetch many more crores in sponsorship and broadcasting revenue is now faced with the pivotal question: what does the suspension mean for advertisers and TV viewership? It is undoubtedly a setback for an industry which is already battling the impact of Covid2019. But experts believe it was the right call to postpone the IPL and prioritise health and safety over monetary interests.

“Given the prevailing pandemic situation, I think it is the right decision to postpone IPL for now. The health and safety of all the players and everyone involved is paramount and keeping in mind the situation and the prevailing mood of the nation, in my view it is the right decision,” Dentsu APAC CEO & India chairman Ashish Bhasin said.

The breach in the bio bubbles is just one factor for calling off the league, noted business strategist & ex- PepsiCo, Motorola & HP APAC marketing head Lloyd Mathias, who held the view that it is simply insensitive to continue with the IPL due to the magnitude of the Covid crisis in India.

“I think brands and businesses should welcome this move in the larger interests of society and their consumers. Yes, there could be some financial impact, but this is insignificant when compared to the devastation all around. There are times when businesses need to set aside their commercial objectives – in the larger interest of society, and this is one such moment,” he commented.

Pulp Strategy founder & MD Ambika Sharma claimed that everyone from sponsors, broadcasters, to the BCCI will have to bear huge losses, but the current environment is least conducive to host matches. “The high stakes of IPL should have been looked into when we see players falling to Covid infections. The infection can have multiple manifestations on the health of the players which can lead to serious lifelong illness. A mutually agreeable formula by key stakeholders can be adopted transparently to arrive at a decision when the medical experts are warning us about the Covid peak,” she added.

Significant revenue impact for the IPL ecosystem

There is no denying that the IPL will suffer a significant downturn in revenue for the current season with loss of sponsorship and broadcasting revenues for the BCCI, said Duff & Phelps managing director & valuation advisory head- APAC Varun Gupta. The league was already coping with loss of revenues from ticket sales and in-stadia F&B, besides the loss of revenue last year due to Vivo pulling out for the 2020 season, he mentioned. The teams, too, will have to face reduced revenue from the central pool and loss of team sponsorship revenues.

For advertisers, the impact will be in terms of redrawing their plans, redirecting their investments to other mediums, shared Tonic Worldwide founder & CEO Chetan Asher. Deep-pocketed brands that had lined up to cash in on the IPL could now reallocate some of their ad budgets towards relief efforts. More so for first time advertisers, they can be nimble, drive change and emerge stronger, he quipped.

“Remember, the BCCI is a very rich body, and this financial loss is an insignificant price to pay in comparison to the larger catastrophe all around. Also, insurance may help cover part of the damages, suffered by the teams, the sponsors and the broadcaster,” observed Mathias.

    Brands must reformulate media strategy

Until now, brands like Cred, Dream11, PhonePe, Zomato have come out with buzzworthy IPL campaigns that captured audience interest. However, there are several creative works in the pipeline that were waiting for the league to enter its second phase, Grapes Digital COO and strategy head Shradha Agarwal pointed out. In May, many brands would have rolled out ad campaigns because the IPL advertising inventory is sold through long term contracts that are signed before the tournament begins.

“This will also impact digital agencies that are ready to launch their campaigns with influencers based on IPL. There are few possibilities, firstly, the IPL is suspended and not dropped hence, advertisers will wait for the league to resume or some clients would cease the campaign and work on Plan B because the budget was allocated for a specific period, and if the quarter changes they will back out. Small advertisers might take the route of moving to regular inventory instead of investing for the remainder of the season in one go,” she explained.

Mathias acknowledged that media planners will have to rework plans but given business sentiment is down and lockdowns are being enforced this is a good time to lay low, until the dark clouds clear. “We agree with BCCI’s decision to postpone the IPL. Focussing on tackling the current crisis in India, along with ensuring the health and safety of players, is far more important than any business impact,”  Dream11 & Dream Sports CEO and co-founder Harsh Jain said.

What does the official broadcasting partner say?

“Star India supports BCCI’s decision to postpone IPL 2021. The health and safety of players, staff and everyone involved in the IPL are of paramount importance. We thank the BCCI, IPL Governing Council, players,  franchisees and sponsors for their support. We are also indebted to our employees, on-air talent, production, and broadcast crews for trying their best to spread positivity by delivering the broadcast of IPL 2021 to millions of homes in the face of challenging circumstances,” the IPL broadcaster said in an official statement. But it remains to be seen how the broadcaster will strategise its content line up in the absence of IPL matches; reruns could be the easiest option.

Negative impact for overall TV industry

Advertising revenues had just started trickling back for the TV industry, with the IPL aiding this recovery the most. Now with the tournament suspended, there will be a significant impact on TV viewership, Elara Capital VP research analyst (media) Karan Taurani said. Fresh non-fiction programming on GECs – which have high going rates and contribute in a big way to ad revenue – has halted due to the filming ban. The movie genre may offer some succour with recent film releases on OTT platforms now landing on TV channels. On the other hand, viewers may again migrate to the streaming services to satiate their viewing needs.

Brands still game for the IPL

The IPL is the single largest property on television in India with an overwhelming appeal to a wide target audience, across geographies, said Dentsu’s Bhasin. It has unparalleled reach and has always proven to be an excellent vehicle for brands and it will continue to be so, he reaffirmed.

“One must also acknowledge that while it was ongoing over the last few weeks, the IPL provided three to four hours of much needed diversion and relief to the Indian masses who are reeling under a barrage of bad news on the Covid front. IPL’s ability to pull TV audiences continues unabated. Secondly, the value of any enterprise is based on its future cash earning capacity. To our mind, while there will be some revenue loss this year, the future revenue generation ability of the IPL is undiminished,” summed up Gupta.

  • Amazon Prime Video boasts 175mn+ viewers, investment in content & live sports to grow

Amazon Prime Video boasts 175mn+ viewers, investment in content & live sports to grow

KOLKATA: Video has emerged to be a key play for the tech giants, especially over the past year. After Google’s YouTube knocked over the industry with astounding ad revenue and viewership in the last quarter, and now, Amazon has also revealed how its streaming service Prime Video has fared in recent times.

In what may sound warning bells for market leader Netflix and upstart Disney+, Prime Video’s viewer base has surpassed 175 million. In a letter to shareholders, Amazon boss Jeff Bezos shared he’s proud to have Prime Video in the family.

“As Prime Video turns 10, over 175 million Prime members have streamed shows and movies in the past year, and streaming hours are up more than 70 per cent year over year. Amazon Studios received a record 12 Academy Award nominations and two wins. Upcoming originals include Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse, The Tomorrow War, The Underground Railroad, and much more,” wrote Bezos.

In mid-April, Bezos revealed that the e-commerce behemoth’s Prime service now has over 200 million subscribers, up 50 million from the beginning of 2020. The service includes fast free shipping, music, video, reading, gaming which is priced at Rs 129 per month, and Rs 999 per year in India.

The numbers are not only talking. Prime Video is making its way into critics’ mind too as it has shined in recent award ceremonies. It earned 12 Academy Award nominations across four films this year; moreover, Sound of Metal won an Oscar in the newly-created sound category.

Interestingly, the OTT is not limiting its video aspirations to original titles and movies but has thrown its hat into the competitive sports content too. “The live sports offering for Prime Video continues to grow internationally,” Bezos said in the letter. Very recently, it became the first streaming service to secure an exclusive national broadcast package from the prestigious NFL. It has ventured into cricket too, the most popular game in India, by acquiring the India territory rights for New Zealand cricket through 2025-2026. It may look at other popular cricket rights in India in the coming year to bolster its sports library.

The company looks at video as a component of broader prime membership. Prime members who watch video have higher free trial conversion rates, higher renewal rates, higher overall engagement, an Amazon spokesperson said in the earnings call.

“There’s great examples of places like Brazil where you launch a video only subscription for example that preceded the broader Prime membership with shipping components and that was as an example a great way to expose people to Amazon. And as we launched a broader Prime in Brazil, it was a great mechanism to get folks into that program,” he added.

The content spend is expected to grow and the investment will go beyond original content to boost the live sports portfolio.

Overall, the e-commerce giant has continued to cash in on our new shop-work-relax-from-home habits in the first three months of this year, reporting a huge rise in sales and a tripling of profits.

Amazon’s overall revenue has gone up by 44 per cent year-on-year basis to reach $108.5 billion revenue. Net income skyrocketed to $8.1 billion compared to the corresponding quarter of 2020, when it stood at $2.5 billion. As online shopping has been one of the businesses to benefit in the ongoing pandemic, the quarterly results show how the digital drive is still fuelling its business.

Net sales are expected to be between $110.0 billion and $116.0 billion for the next quarter, or to grow between 24 per cent and 30 per cent as against the second quarter 2020, the company guided. Operating income is expected to be between $4.5 billion and $8.0 billion. The company will also host its Prime Day event sometime in the second quarter.

KOLKATA: The India tour of Australia is underway and is making waves in a cricket-worshipping nation such as ours. Post a rough start, the Men in Blue are back to winning ways and have garnered a remarkable response on SonyLIV.

The high-octane tournament has more than doubled up viewership on SonyLIV, coupled with five times rise in daily average subscriptions on the platform. With simultaneous streams across English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, 50 per cent of viewership have flowed in from Hindi and regional languages feeds for the event so far.

Advertisers have also reacted with great interest, with as many as over 70 brands coming on board for the cricketing event. With brands like Winzo and McDowell’s No.1 Soda being brought in as co-powered sponsors, the platform has locked in businesses across categories like insurance, banking, gaming, tourism, electronics, FMCGs and more. Some of these sponsors are Proctor & Gamble, Lenovo, Seagram’s Royal Stag Packaged Drinking Water, Association of Mutual Funds of India, IIFL amongst others. Additionally, advertisers like Apple, Castrol, Horlicks, Dell, Vimal Elaichi, RBI, SBI Mutual Funds, Berger Paints, ICICI Pru Life & Mutual Funds, Australia Tourism, Acko General Insurance, and more have also come forward to advocate their support for the ongoing India Tour of Australia.

"The India tour of Australia has opened to a thunderous response from the audience and advertisers alike. Riding on the increase in viewership, we are expecting a 50-60 per cent revenue growth on the platform over the last series. We are already sold out for ODIs and T20s and have only 15-20 per cent inventory left for the Test matches. Cricket has always been a major consumption driver for us, and we hope to see the reactions spiralling in the upcoming matches of the tour," SonyLIV digital business ad sales revenue head Ranjana Mangla commented.

After registering their first win of the tour in the third ODI, Team India will now look to dominate in the T20I matches. The T20I will be followed by the much-awaited four Test matches for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

After a high-flying finish in the third ODI, where Team India handsomely registered their first win of the tour, the Men in Blue seem to have found their rhythm leading to the three T20I matches. The second white ball series will be a tight knit contest as both teams will take on the field with renewed focus and motivation to turn the tide in their favour ahead of the all-important test matches.

David Warner and Pat Cummins will miss the rest of Australia's white-ball matches against India, while D'Arcy Short has officially joined the T20I squad. Australia are currently ranked number one in the ICC Men’s T20I rankings and with the ICC Men's T20 World Cup scheduled for next year, these matches will form a crucial part for both the teams’ preparations in this format.

The T20I will be followed by the much-awaited four test matches for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The first Test will be a day/night affair, from 17-21 December at the Adelaide Oval. It will be India's first away day/night Test, adding historic significance to the contest. The other three test matches will be held at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Sydney Cricket Ground and the Gabba.

  • Disney+Hotstar thanks partner brands post IPL 2020

Disney+Hotstar thanks partner brands post IPL 2020

KOLKATA: Disney+Hotstar has seen massive traction during IPL 2020, both in terms of audience as well as advertising. More than 300 brands leveraged the platform’s scale and reach during the tournament. Thanking partners, the OTT platform tooted the horn of its success from the front page of The Economic Times’ last Friday.

“Thank you for partnering with us and ensuring we were sold 100 per cent during this Dream11 IPL 2020,” said Disney+Hotstar in the jacket spread. However, the platform did not share any metrics on engagement or viewership like it did the last two years.

Disney+Hotstar currently boasts 18.5 million subscribers, a figure shared by its parent company The Walt Disney. “Disney+ ended Q4 with 73.7 million paid subscribers or an increase of over 16 million subscribers versus Q3. Disney+ Hotstar subscriber additions were the largest contributor to this increase, driven by the start of the delayed IPL season. Disney+ Hotstar subscribers now account for a little over a quarter of our global subscriber base,” Disney senior executive vice president and chief financial officer Christine McCarthy said.

The platform decided to take IPL matches behind a paywall this year. It struck a deal with Jio and Airtel to boost subscriptions too. Hence, the bold move allowed brands to reach high spender quality audiences. It also added new features to the interactive Watch’N Play social feed. Replicating the exhilarating roar of the stadium, fans were able to use an interactive emoji stream, a move designed to boost engagement and social media traction.

Every year, once the tournament gets over, the platform advertises to thank its partner brands and share the overall metrics that it has achieved during the tournament. It helps in creating a strong perception for the tournament as well as about Disney+Hotstar and how it is preferred by the audiences across the country.

  • Brands eye live sports events for promotions: Procam International

Brands eye live sports events for promotions: Procam International

KOLKATA: With improved sentiments in the economy and companies exploring alternative ways to generate brand recognition, the concept of sponsoring sports events, though at nascent stage, has become popular in Kolkata too. And an example of this is Tata Steel becoming the title sponsor for India’s premiere 25K run event to be held in Kolkata.

Joining the steel maker, are brands like Oberoi Grand as hospitality partner, Reebok as sportswear and training partner, Himalayan as water partner, Nestle as food and beverage partner and Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM as radio partner among others.

Procam International, a sports management company involved in the promotion of national and international sporting events, sports consultancy and live television programming, which is also organising the first edition of the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K on 28 December 2014, feels that the company has good sponsorship from both sports and non-sports companies.

The city will run as one under the following race categories – the 25K (elite and amateurs), Open 10K (amateurs), Ananda Run (6 km), Sr. Citizens’ Run (4 km), and Champions with Disability (4 km).

“Sports events have become an important element for some businesses to promote their campaigns in other regions of India. It is common to see non-sport brands taking strategic decisions to sponsor sporting events,” said Procam International CEO Dilip Jayaram.

In 1988, with a vision to provide a more holistic spend to the advertising rupee and a burning desire to ameliorate the prevailing professional standards for sportsmen, Anil and Vivek B. Singh created Procam International. The organisation has based its corporate philosophy on an open culture, with an emphasis on values and integrity. Procam International has promoted and conducted over 45 world events, which have elicited player participation of the highest caliber, as well as huge public interest.

The Tata Steel Kolkata 25K event will give thousands of individuals a new opportunity to celebrate the birth of a sporting event that salutes perseverance and self-belief and makes lives brighter and better. “Kolkata’s runners can now lace up and join the running revolution that is not just engulfing India’s towns and cities but attracting the attention of the world’s finest runners,” said Jayaram.

“We aim to ink a number of new sponsorship deals with other brands also. We are looking for a medical partner,” he said adding that for this event, Radio Mirchi will run 18-20 promos every day.

Talking about below-the-line (BTL) activities, he said that Procam International has put up 37 hoardings and 30 bus shelters.

About 15,000 people are expected to participate in the five events to be organised through the day. The route for TSK 25K is in the process of being finalised under the guidelines set by the West Bengal Athletic Association and Kolkata Traffic Police.

Film actor, producer and television presenter Jeet, well known for his passion for fitness, will be TSK 25K’s ‘Face of the Event’.

In its first edition, the event will recognise the efforts of participants by offering total prize money of Rs 21,54,000. The top ten Elite athletes (men and women) in the 25K category stand to win attractive prizes. While the winner will receive Rs 2,50,000, Rs 1,75,000 is up for grabs for second place while third place finishers will receive Rs 1,00,000. Dividing amateur runners into six segments based on their age – 18 to under 30, 30 to under 40, 40 to under 50, 50 to under 60, 60 to under 70, and 70 and above – TSK Kolkata 25K will also award the top three amateur runners (men and women) in each of the above segments with prizes of Rs 12,000, 10,000 and 5,000 respectively.

“We urge people of Kolkata and beyond to come and experience the joy of running this December,” Jayaram said.

According to a city based marketing expert, sports as a property will attract major interest from corporates looking at increasing their marketing spends in Kolkata. “The value of these sponsorship deals is generally high,” the expert concluded.

  • Sony Six gets ready to score with FIFA World Cup

Sony Six gets ready to score with FIFA World Cup

MUMBAI: The lead-up to the FIFA World Cup 2014 has official broadcaster Sony Six sweating bullets to ensure that the extravaganza lives up to its name and all the fan frenzy around it. The ball was already set rolling a while ago when the channel launched its “Live the Magic” campaign, featuring Bollywood actor and football enthusiast John Abraham. The TVC captured the essence of Brazil, the venue of the FIFA, through its beaches, narrow streets, colourful houses and music.

Adding to it, Sony Six business head Prasana Krishnan has drawn up a comprehensive marketing blueprint for the mother of all tourneys. “Sony Six has chosen to target 10 -12 cities. TVCs and ads will be placed in 10 newspapers, including publications by the ABP group. The TVCs will be aired on 30 different channels (regional, GECs and news) in India. We are also running radio campaigns in 50 cities.”

That apart, the channel has tied up with Hard Rock Cafe as part of its on-ground activations. “This is to ensure that groups of people can come together and view the game. As part of our mall activities, we will have DJs, along with various contests and flash mobs enthralling audiences in shopping centres,” says Krishnan.

Apart from Hard Rock, other popular sports bars too will showcase the matches on giant screens. The manager of a Malad (in the western part of Mumabi)-based sports bar and grill said, “We will have two projectors and four TV sets lined up for customers to enjoy the game. A third projector will be used during important matches or when crowds swell up.”

A la competitors Tensports.com and starsports.com, the MSM group too has launched a digital sports entertainment destination called LIVsports.in. Fans can watch live matches here, captured from four different camera angles, complete with timelines, statistics, a match centre, heat maps and analyses. There are also fun activities like “Mohit Bana Messi – Jersyfy Me” and “Pehchan Kaun?” apart from the LIV sports football fantasy league.

Says MSM executive vice-president, new media, business development and digital/syndication Nitesh Kripalani: “We are giving consumers two options – either watch the LIVE HD quality match by paying a small fee; or watch the 5-minute delayed match for free. All other content like stats, analysis and engagements are available for free to users across devices.”

Kripalani adds that the  "the response (to the website) has been extremely positive with the campaign breaking; the numbers are more than quadrupling per day. More than 90 per cent visitors are from India; primarily Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore”. LIVsports.in has already signed up with Amity University, Gionee Mobile and Jabong.com and discussions are underway to get other brands on board.

As for advertisers for the World Cup, Hero MotoCorp is already on board as presenting sponsor and Xolo Mobile and Microsoft as powered by sponsors. During the recently concluded IPL, Sony Six sold 10 second ad spots for Rs 4.5 to Rs 5 lakh, while the final IPL match had advertising ratesat  Rs 18 lakh to Rs 20 lakh fo a 10 second spot (media planners, however, pegged this at Rs 14 lakh to Rs 16 lakh). For FIFA, it is selling 10-seconders for between Rs 2 lakh and  Rs 2.50 lakh.

Coming to the game itself, Sony Six is seeking to leverage the viewers it gained during the IPL and increase the overall  viewership base. “During the 2010 World Cup, the reach numbers were 65 million, but during this World Cup, we expect the numbers to touch 125 million in India, as trends show an increase in football viewership in India,” says a confident Krishnan.

With 32 nations battling it out on the football field, fans in India will not have to worry about international timing clashes as Sony Six will broadcast 24 games out of 64 matches live during the prime time slot of 9:30 pm.

Sony Six will also air two new shows on all match days: a wrap of the day at prime time titled ‘Cafe Rio’ and a live breakfast show called ‘Football Extraaa’. Popular names from national and international football like Peter Crouch, Robbie Fowler, Peter Shilton, Mikael Silvestre, Ellyse Perry, and Sunil Chhetri will grace the shows along with Abraham, dissecting and analysing the matches.

‘Cafe Rio’ will be telecast at 8pm and will lead up to the beginning of the match at 9.30pm; it will be a blend of sports and entertainment and will also focus on trivia about victorious teams, historical venues and players.

‘Football Extraaa’ will be a daily morning show for viewers to relive the fun and excitement of the previous day’s matches. It will be aired between 8am and 9am and will be in an interactive format where viewers can dial in and share their perspective or ask questions.

What’s more, Sony Six plans to have live commentary in Bengali. As reported earlier by indiantelevision.com, Sony Aath will broadcast live the World Cup with Bengali commentary. Aath will telecast 56 matches in Bengali. The channel aims to expand its reach through this specialized offer to its ‘Bong’ audiences.

Kripalani believes that the FIFA  football action telecast during prime time will not have an impact on general entertainment channels like the IPL did, pointing out that "even if there is, it will likely be seen in Kerala or Bengal that have a large football base.”

It may be too early to foretell such an effect but all we can say is relax and get set to cheer your best team as the game unfolds in Brazil.
