  • Live India ties up with Harmonic to improve connectivity and video quality

Live India ties up with Harmonic to improve connectivity and video quality

MUMBAI: Hindi news channel Live India has announced a partnership with Harmonic for an end-to-end contribution solution to improve video quality and optimise connectivity between the organisation’s regional news bureaus and main headquarters in Noida.

Harmonic’s Ellipse 3100 contribution encoders and ProView 7100 integrated receiver-decoders (IRDs) provide Live India with a high-density, scalable and bandwidth-efficient solution for fixed contribution applications, enabling the broadcaster to cost-effectively expand from two to five streaming news channels.

By more than doubling its channel lineup, Live India can now ensure that viewers across India are able to stay abreast of important breaking news and live events. The broadcaster chose Harmonic’s contribution solutions based on superior performance and support for a wide range of broadcast standards and formats, including MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DVB-S2, SD, HD, and MP4, that allow for increased flexibility, bandwidth savings and exceptional video quality. As Live India adds more channels in the future, Harmonic’s solutions will provide the broadcaster with easy scalability at an affordable price point.

“Over the years, Harmonic has gained a reputation around the world as a leading provider of contribution solutions based on the flexibility, scalability, and amazing video quality we bring to live news and sports applications,” said Harmonic Asia Pacific sales vice president Andrew Thornton. “Working with Live India on this project, we’re able to demonstrate to broadcasters everywhere how simple and affordable it is to expand your service offering using an end-to-end contribution solution from Harmonic.”

Harmonic’s Ellipse 3100 encoder features simultaneous IP and DVB-ASI outputs, making it the ideal solution for Live India’s fixed contribution needs. The versatile encoder supports all SD and HD MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC codecs at 4:2:0 or 4:2:2 chroma subsampling and 8 or 10 bits, guaranteeing pristine video quality. Live India is currently using the encoder for SD 4:2:2 with plans to migrate to HD 4:2:2 in the future. Fully firmware upgradeable, the Ellipse encoders provide Live India with a smooth and cost-effective migration path. The low-latency encoders help eliminate awkward pauses during handoffs between Live India’s field and studio talent for a seamless broadcast.

Live India is using the Ellipse encoders in combination with Harmonic’s ProView 7100 IRDs. The solution lowers the broadcaster’s capital and operational expenses. Harmonic’s ProView 7100 IRDs provide Live India with a 1RU, scalable, multiformat IRD, transcoder, and MPEG stream processor designed to increase workflow efficiencies and video quality for contribution applications. After Live India compresses live content using the Ellipse encoders, Harmonic’s ProView 7100 IRDs decompress the content at the same sampling and bitrate, resulting in nearly lossless video quality.

Currently, the network operates Live India and Mi Marathi which lately converted itself from being just an entertainment channel to include news and current affairs as well.

  • Fake sting operation victim withdraws defamation case against Live India

Fake sting operation victim withdraws defamation case against Live India

MUMBAI : Uma Khurana, victim of a fake sting operation, has withdrwan her defamation complaint against Hindi news channel Live India and its CEO Sudhir Chaudhary after settling the matter with them.

In an application before a court in Delhi, Khurana said that she has settled the issue “amicably” with regard to the sting operation with Live India TV Channel and its CEO Sudhir Chaudhary and did not want to pursue the matter.

Khurana, a teacher in Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, had filed in November last year a complaint through her counsel Amit Kumar, alleging that the TV Channel’s reporter had conducted a fake sting operation, which was approved for telecast by Chaudhary, that damaged her reputation.

“Since the matter has been settled/compromised between me and Live India TV Channel and Chaudhary, I do not want to proceed this case against other accused TV reporter Prakash Singh also. I am withdrawing this complaint against all accused,” she submitted in a statement before the court.

Taking her application into consideration, Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjay Jindal said: “I am of the view that the matter has been settled.”

Khurana had not only been manhandled by the protesting mob following the telecast of the fake sting operation on 30 August last year, but was also terminated from her service by the Delhi Government.

The court, however, had let off her in the criminal case, after the police chargesheet said that there was no “incriminating” evidence against her.

The police, however, had claimed that there was sufficient evidence to nail the three accused — Prakash Singh, Rashmi Singh and Virender Arora — in the criminal case under Section 120 (criminal conspiracy), 193 (punishment for false evidence) and 196 (using false evidence) and 471 (using forged document as genuine) of the IPC.

According to the chargesheet, Arora was having a monetary dispute with Khurana, who had refused to part with the money.

Arora allegedly hatched a conspiracy with Prakash to implicate the school teacher by carrying out a sting operation.

On 30 August, the TV sting triggered a violent outrage amongst the local public outside Khurana’s school near Daryaganj in Delhi.

However, Delhi Government had later reinstated Khurana after she was discharged by the court.

  • Fake sting: Live India banned for one month

NEW DELHI: The Live India Channel which telecast the fake sting leading to a law and order problem and arrest of a Delhi school teacher, has now been banned for one month with immediate effect.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry today issued order for prohibiting the transmission/re-transmission of the satellite channel (which until early August was known as Janmat) on all platforms throughout the country.

The ban has been imposed in terms of the Sub-Section (2) of Section 20 of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act 1995. The Act is clear that ‘no person shall transmit or re-transmit through a cable service any programme unless such programme is in conformity with the prescribed programme code’.

Section 20 (2) of the Act says the government may regulate or prohibit the transmission or re-transmission of any channel or programme ‘Where the Central Government thinks it necessary or expedient so to do in the interest of the (i) sovereignty or integrity of India; or (ii) security of India; or (iii) friendly relations of India with any foreign State; or (iv) public order, decency or morality.

Earlier, the Ministry had issued a showcause notice on 11 September asking the channel to respond within three days.

The order issued today, effective till 20 October says: “It had come to the notice of the Central Government that some Cable Operators in the country through their Cable Television Networks had been transmitting/re-transmitting the satellite channel namely ‘Janmat’ (assumed name Live India), which telecast an admittedly doctored sting operation on Smt. Uma Khurana, teacher, Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Darya Ganj, Delhi.”

The order further noted that the telecast of the sting operation was “defamatory, deliberate, false and contained suggestive innuendos and half-truths; incited violence and contained content against maintenance of law and order. It criticized, maligned and slandered an individual in person and it denigrated children and was irresponsibly aired by the channel without exercise of due diligence in preliminary verification of the facts of the case.”

The channel’s reporters Prakash Singh and Rashmi Singh are already in police custody. It is also learnt that some women’s organizations have filed a complaint asking the Ministry to cancel the broadcasting licence of the channel.

Interestingly, the incident has come out at a time when there is growing confrontation between the Ministry and news broadcasters on the need or relevance of an imposed Content Code.

The school teacher Uma Khurana has been granted bail in the fake sting which showed her using her own students for prostitution. Businessman Virendra Arora who wanted to recover some money reportedly owed to him by Uma is reported to have hatched the conspiracy using Prakash.

Live India is the new name of Janmat channel, promoted by Broadcast Initiatives Ltd of Markand Adhikari. Janmat was a predominantly “views channel” earlier till it re-launched itself in the form of Live India, a 24×7 news channel, on 3 August.

  • Star takes up ad sales of Hindi news channel Live India

MUMBAI: In its first ever advertising deal outside the network, Star India has inked a deal with Broadcast Initiatives Limited for its Hindi news channel Live India.

Star will handle the ad sales of Live India, nationally and globally, with immediate effect. Live India plans to venture into international markets including the US, UK and Dubai.

The announcement comes close on the heels of the re-positioning of Live India from a ‘views’ to a news channel with live content. The channel was previously known as Janmat.

Broadcast Initiatives Limited vice chairman and managing director Markand Adhikari said that the company is soon looking to foray into International markets including US, UK and Dubai. Apart from India, Star’s ad sales teams across the globe will be fully functional in this regard.

With a distribution platform already in place, the Star network is looking to adopt an integrated broadcast services approach through its first ad sales deal outside the network.

Star India Pvt. Ltd president – advertising sales and distribution Paritosh Joshi said, “This is the first time Star India has offered its advertising sales capabilities to a channel outside the Star Network. This is a major milestone for this division. It is our intent to quickly evolve into the region’s top integrated broadcast services organization and this deal underscores the seriousness of this intent.”

Adhikari added, “This is a critical partnership for us and we consider it a significant asset to securing a strong advertising revenue base for our Live India.”

For the Marathi channel Mi Marathi, Adhikari has assigned NDTV Media to handle the ad sales functions.

  • Janmat to don new look as Live India

MUMBAI: Donning a fresh look, Broadcast Initiative Limited’s Hindi ‘views’ channel Janmat is being re-christened as Live India with effect from 3 August. Shedding its old look which positioned it as a ‘views’ channel, Live India will now mainly focus on live news-bulletins. In tune with its new name, the channel’s tagline is ‘Khabar Hamari Faisla Aapka.’

“With the shift in positioning the re-vamped channel will have live-bulletins all round the day. It will catch up with all the events and live happenings across the country,” says a source close to the development.

As reported earlier by Indiantelevision.com, the channel will dedicate 70 per cent of its content to news, while 20 per cent will be based on analysis and 10 per cent on interviews. The upgradation will involve an investment of Rs 400 million.

“We are re-launching the channel. We will be news rather than programme-driven. Analysis will supplement the news and not the other way round,” Janmat editor and CEO Sudhir Chaudhary had earlier told Indiantelevision earlier.

As part of its expansion plan, Janmat has added bureaus in Srinagar, Chandigarh, Bhopal, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata and Guwahati to its existing ones in Mumbai and Delhi. The Marathi reporters of sister channel Mi Marathi will also pool in their resources.
