  • Disney Media Distribution & Lionsgate join first pre-LA screening

    MUMBAI: MIPTV has announced that, for the first time, Hollywood studios will give a sneak peek in Cannes of the new shows to bow ahead of this year’s May Screenings. Disney Media Distribution and Lionsgate will join as first presenting partners of the inaugural MIPDrama Pre-LA Screenings Showcase on Tuesday, 4 April, from 08.45-10.00am in the Grand Auditorium of the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.

    MIPTV, the world’s leading entertainment content market takes place in Cannes, France, 3-6 April 2017.

    The focus on new American series rounds out the second annual MIPDrama Screenings at MIPTV 2017. A spotlight on Latin America will take place on Monday April 3 and will include a first-look at top new dramas from Telefe, Azteca, Caracol, Telemundo, RCN and TV Record, among others.

    Together, these screening blocks offer more than 1,700 drama buyers attending MIPTV the opportunity to prepare their spring acquisition slate ahead of the LA Screenings.

    “We are delighted to showcase for the first time at MIPTV a sneak preview of dramas from the US studios prior to the LA Screenings. This will follow the MIPDrama Screenings Official Selection featuring new dramas from around the world, which will be viewed by top buyers on the Sunday before MIPTV,” commented MIPTV organiser Reed MIDEM director – TV division Laurine Garaude.

  • Lionsgate properties in film and TV on Amazon Prime Video India

    MUMBAI: A large number of Lionsgate’s top acclaimed films, television episodes and upcoming new releases will become the subscription streaming home on Prime Video India following a long-time exclusive deal between Amazon and Lionsgate.

    Blockbuster movies like La La Land, which has grossed over $370 million at the worldwide box office and won six Academy Awards, event films including Deepwater Horizon and The Divergent Series: Allegiant and upcoming 2017 releases Power Rangers, The Shack and others will also be exclusively available only to Prime members, and will not be available on Satellite or Pay Television.

    Rohit Tiwari at Morris Street Advisors which represents Lionsgate in India negotiated and closed the ground-breaking deal.

    Hit movie franchises like The Twilight Saga, which grossed over $3 billion worldwide, the Saw series, the highest-grossing long-running horror franchise in history, Red and Step Up 5 from the global blockbuster Step up franchise along with worldwide hit TV series such as Nashville, The Royals and Graves amongst others will have their exclusive subscription streaming home on Amazon Prime Video. In addition, popular series such as the iconic Mad Men andAnger Management are included in the deal.

    Amazon Prime Video has the largest selection of latest and exclusive movies and TV shows, ad-free across Indian and Hollywood movies, US TV shows, top/popular Indian and international kids’ shows, award winning Amazon Original shows along with content from top Bollywood, regional, Indian and international studios.

    MUMBAI: Lionsgate has roped in former Warner Bros. television director of current programming Chad Kennedy as SVP of current programming. His hiring represents Lionsgate’s increased presence in the scripted TV world. Kennedy will direct several reports focused entirely on current.

    “The scripted team in our television group has consistently turned out high quality, award-winning series on every platform, including broadcast, cable and streaming,” said Lionsgate EVP-television Chris Selak. “Chad’s experience working with critically acclaimed, fan-favorite series makes him the perfect fit for our existing team, which has done an incredible job of successfully shepherding all of Lionsgate’s series from conception to air.”

    Lionsgate’s scripted programming slate includes OWN’s recent breakout Greenleaf; Hulu’s dramedy Casual; Orange is the New Black, now entering its fifth season on Netflix; E!’s first scripted series The Royals, and Nashville, returning for its fifth season on its new home on CMT and Hulu.

    The studio also has upcoming comedy Graves, its first original series for Epix; the sci-fi anthology series Dimension 404, which begins streaming on Hulu this fall; Dear White People for Netflix, Lionsgate’s first series for YouTube Red, Step Up, and the anthology series Manifesto, the story of the hunt for the Unabomber for Discovery.

    A report reads that in the previous executive structure, SVP television Andy Richley and SVP development A.J. Morewitz, had been juggling both development and current. They now will focus squarely on development.

    Viacom18 Motion Pictures to release ‘Gods of Egypt’ on 26 February

    MUMBAI: Viacom18 Motion Pictures will be releasing the fantasy movie Gods of Egypt from Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment label in India on 26 February, 2016.

    The film will be released in four languages namely English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

    The deal was negotiated by Wendy Reeds and Christian Perala from Lionsgate International’s UK office.

    The studio will market and distribute the movie, which recreates the ancient Egyptian kingdom depicting armour clad, sword swinging Gerard Butler as the Egyptian God of Darkness Set and Brendon Thwaites as mortal hero Bek. This mega action adventure follows Bek’s quest to retrieve magic objects with thrilling chase sequences followed by breathtaking high octane action scenes for the survival of mankind that is hanging in the balance.

We have been keen to expand our English film slate with the growing Hollywood contribution to the Indian box office.     Netflix renews ‘Orange is the New Black’ for three seasons

    MUMBAI: Netflix has renewed Lionsgate’s original series Orange is the New Black for three additional seasons.

    Season four of the comedic drama set in a women’s prison from creator and executive producer Jenji Kohan will premiere on 17 June with additional seasons five, six and seven premiering in future years.

    Currently seasons one through three are streaming on Netflix.

    Concurrently, it was announced that series creator and executive producer Jenji Kohan has committed to continue as Orange is the New Black’s executive producer and showrunner for seasons five, six and seven.

    “Jenji and her team have produced a phenomenal and impactful series that is both funny and dramatic, outrageous and heartfelt. Audiences around the world have come to love the ladies and men of Orange is the New Black, and we are eager to see where three more seasons will take them,” said Netflix vice president of original content Cindy Holland.

    “Three more years! Not quite a political term, but still plenty of time to do some interesting things. In some cultures, ‘May you lead an interesting life,’ is a curse, but I don’t live in those cultures,” said Kohan. “Here’s to keeping it interesting. Thanks Netflix!
