America Ferrera makes speech for SeeHer award victory at the 29 Critics Choice Awards

Mumbai: The 29 Critics’ Choice Awards revealed itself to be a cinematic masterpiece of its own! Celebrating the year’s most exceptional performances, and finest stars, the night showcased everything from electrifying wins to tears of joy as legends were honoured and rising stars received recognition. Amongst the names that made headlines was America Ferrera who won the SeeHer Award, which honours the silver screen’s leading ladies who advocate for gender equality and portray authentic, boundary-pushing characters. America won the award for her role in Barbie, the female-led film that was a box-office phenomenon, grossing over 1.4 Billion Dollars globally. The 29 Critics’ Choice Awards streamed LIVE on Lionsgate Play on 15 January 2024. In case you missed tuning in live, rewatch the event exclusively on Lionsgate Play.

In her acceptance speech, America Ferrera said, “I yearned to see people like myself on screen as full humans. When I started working over 20 years ago, that seemed impossible, I know. It seemed impossible that anyone could make a career of portraying fully dimensional Latina characters. But because of writers, directors, producers and executives who are daring enough to rewrite outdated stories and to challenge deeply entrenched biases, I, and some of my beloved Latina colleagues, have been supremely blessed to bring to life some fierce and fantastic women. Because of that, we have had the chance to bring through some deeply layered Latina characters and characters that I could not have seen growing up.’

She further went on to say, “But now I can see her and I see her expanding in the next generation of talent like my beloved Ariana Greenblatt, who plays my daughter in Barbie, and in Jenna Ortega, and in Selena Gomez, and in so many more out there. To me, this is the best and highest use of storytelling to affirm one another’s full humanity, to uphold the truth that we are all worthy of being seen – Black, brown, indigenous Asian, Trans, disabled, any body type, any gender. We are all worthy of having our lives richly and authentically reflective.”

Emma Stone wins Best Actor Female on the 29 Critics Choice Awards

Mumbai: The 29 Critics Choice Awards was a dazzling array as stars graced the event all in style and true Hollywood glamor, as it witnessed the exceptional contributions of raw-talent. The awards recognised the brilliance of creative cinema in the past year. After sweeping the Golden Globe Awards for her portrayal of Bella in Poor Things, Emma Stone has bagged yet another win at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Taking home the trophy for Best Actor Female, The Curse actress’ speech was heartfelt, hilarious and totally on brand.

The 29 Critics Choice Awards was streamed live on Lionsgate Play on 15 January 2024. If you missed it or want to watch it again, make sure to tune into the platform!

Showing her fellow nominees a whole lotta love, Stone said, “I’m going to be honest, I’m in like full blown shock. I didn’t have anything that I was going to say because this is completely crazy. This category is ridiculous – Lily (Gladstone), I mean come on. Margot (Robbie) – what in the. Carrie (Mulligan) – okay. Greta and Sandra Hüller. This doesn’t make any sense. Thank you so much for this, it means so much to me. I was being serious. I don’t know what to say.”

Further thanking her cast and crew, the La La Land actor added, “This table – here is the Poor Things table. This crew, this cast – Mark, Willam Ramy, Chris, Jerrod, Katherine, Hunter, Hanah, Shula – there’s so many unbelievable people that I was lucky enough to work with. Ed Guy and Andrew Low, Tony McNamer and Yorgos, who I call Yoro because that’s how we’re supposed to say it to a Greek man if we’re speaking to them. I love you, thank you for everything this is uh really wild. Playing Bella was one of the greatest joys of my life. I got to unlearn a lot of things in playing her. Unlearn parts of shame and societal stuff that gets put on us, and I’m still working on it.”

Ending with a joke in true Emma fashion, she said, “This is the Critics’ Choice Awards and it is about outside opinion but I’m very grateful to the critics for this. But I’m just learning not to care what you think.”

The Taylena Reunion of our dreams

Mothers have mothered and how! The most celebrated Hollywood duo aka Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, gave their fans yet another ‘awww’ worthy moment as they posed for some adorable selfies. What’s more, the two were seen engaging in a serious gossip session, which had us all wondering what ‘tea’ was being spilled. Rumor has it that a certain Jenner stopped Sel from posing with Willy Wonka aka Timothee Chalamet. We’d love to know how that unfolded.

    Unmatched Oppenheimer Dominance

With his chiselled jawline and iconically rare smile, Robert J Oppenheimer aka Cillian Murphy came in and stole the show as Oppenheimer swept the scene with 5 wins in various categories. From Murphy’s and Christopher Nolan’s first ever Golden Globe Win as Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture and Best Director of a Motion Picture to Best Motion Picture, the film dominated the Awards night. Ruling theatres in 2023 by garnering more than 1 BILLION in revenue, the actor-director duo reigned supreme, proving that they are here to stay!

    Michelle Yeoh’s not-so-subtle warning

She’s a Crazy Rich Asian and knows how to get away with it! After winning Best Actor Female in a Motion Picture during the 2023 Golden Globe Awards for ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’, Michelle Yeoh was forced to wrap up her speech by an impatient pianist, leading to her viral ‘shut up’ moment. However, this time around, when the actor came to present the award she gave a not-so-subtle nod stating ‘I threatened to beat up the piano player if they played me off my acceptance speech. You will be happy to know that I am very chill this year’, leaving the audience in hoots.

Barbie took the Cinematic Box Office cake and a few other slices too!

After painting the town pink, Barbie not only got nominated in a brand new category, but won it too. To celebrate theatre and movie-goers, the Golden Globes introduced the ‘Cinematic and Box Office Achievement’ category. With films like John Wick: Chapter 4, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 and Oppenheimer fighting to take the gold home, Barbie still landed on top, proving that womanhood rules. Besides its triumphant win in the category, the Margot Robbie starrer also took home best Original Song in a Motion Picture for Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For?’

    A Well ‘Suited’ Reunion

Butch and Sundance are back, baby! A surprise reunion saw the main cast of Suits reunite on-screen (albeit just to present an award). Despite missing a few key members of the cast, Patrik Adams, Gabrial Macht, Gina Torres and Sarah Rafferty reunited to present the award for Best Television Series, giving fans the same excitement and happiness they did for 9 years. With their witty banter still intact, they showed viewers and fans that they haven’t skipped a beat after all these years.

    Plane

An action film starring Gerard Butler and Mike Colter, Plane follows a commercial pilot named Brodie Torrance and a terrifying crash that marks only the beginning of his epic journey in the film. In Plane, Butler and Colter band together as pilot and fugitive to protect their fellow besieged crash survivors from swarming, hostage-taking pirates.

    Shotgun Wedding

Wear your best clothes as you are invited to the biggest wedding celebration of the year. • Golden Globe nominee ‘The Curse’ starring Emma Stone makes its digital premiere in India exclusively on Lionsgate Play

Golden Globe nominee ‘The Curse’ starring Emma Stone makes its digital premiere in India exclusively on Lionsgate Play

Mumbai: In the satirical black comedy thriller television series The Curse, Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone star as Asher and Whitney, a newlywed couple trying to bring their eco-conscious housing vision to Española, New Mexico. However, their plans are complicated by a supposed curse and Dougie (Benny Safdie), a flawed reality TV producer who sees potential in their story. As the series progresses, the couple becomes entangled in a complex web of ethical dilemmas while also navigating the challenges of maintaining their relationship and trying to start a family.

The show has blown critics away, with Entertainment Weekly dubbing it “the weirdest, most unforgettable show of 2023”, and The Guardian describing it as “exquisitely cringe-worthy”. With an immersive storyline and sterling performances, this unique blend of comedy and thriller promises an unforgettable viewing experience for Lionsgate Play subscribers, who can start streaming the first 8 episodes of the series from 29th December.

In an interview with W Magazine, Emma Stone gushed about her experience working with comedian Nathan Fielder, “He is such a good actor—he really blew my mind. I remember watching a scene a couple days in that I wasn’t in. I was texting him up a storm, saying: ‘You’re one of the best actors I’ve ever seen.’ He’s so great and such a natural on Nathan for You and in The Rehearsal—but he’s playing himself. And still, he’s acting… At any given time, you do start to wonder if maybe there’s a prank happening. Like, someone’s filming you from a distance. That’s the only unsettling part of spending time with him.”

In an interview with Indiewire Nathan Fielder delves into the intriguing concept of uncertainty surrounding the reality of the curse, “It’s the core of the show in a lot of ways. [Asher and Whitney are] projecting things that may or may not exist onto everyone around them, and everyone is sort of doing that to each other. That idea of what’s actually real or what matters in a situation is a lot of what the show is exploring and reveling in. Because it’s easy to sort of go, ‘Oh, well this person’s good or bad,’ or ‘This is real or fake.’ But in a lot of these situations, it’s so much more complicated than that.”

‘The Curse’ exclusively streams Episode 1 to 8 on Lionsgate Play starting 29 December.

  • Digital premiere of Sylester Stallone’s Expend4bles exclusively on Lionsgate Play

Digital premiere of Sylester Stallone’s Expend4bles exclusively on Lionsgate Play

Mumbai: “I Now Pronounce You Man And Knife.” With eye-catching explosions, iconic lines and more, the celebrated Expendables promise raw, unfiltered and violent action wherever they go. The action franchise returns with Expend4bles (Expendables 4) and a newly expanded cast of Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, and Andy Garcia. With new faces come some old ones in Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham as the group of mercenaries band together and fight for each other, and money (of course!). Bringing back the memorable action sequences, budding camaraderie and ‘never say die’ attitude, Expend4bles is all set to exclusively premiere on Lionsgate Play this 5 January.

Talking about his character Gunner, actor Dolph Lundgren said, “With Gunner, I think he’s a bit of a comedic relief because he’s the only one or one of the few characters who doesn’t care, doesn’t try to be tough. He doesn’t really care much. He has these idiosyncrasies and he always has problems, a little bit of substance abuse, a little bit of concentration issues. In this film, he’s on the wagon. So, he’s been sober for six months. He’s doing the AA program and he’s dating some girl on the Internet that he’s in love with. It clouds his perception a little bit. Also, age has caught up with him, so he’s wearing glasses and he’s got a bifocal scope on his sniper rifle. But things don’t work out that well initially for him.”

Further elaborating about his character, Lundgren said, “So, those things put together is kind of fun to play with as an actor and it gives me somewhere to go. Like in each scene I can always try to massage it so that it’s a bit entertaining for the audience and that they can follow the guy and follow the arc of the character and catch the payouts and all of these different weaknesses and obstacles that he has to accomplish his goal.”
