    Lionsgate roars louder as Hollywood meets Hyderabad in 2026

    MUMBAI: Hollywood’s roaring lion just found its desi accent. Lionsgate Play, the premium streaming platform that’s redefined Hollywood for Indian screens, is entering 2026 with a bang and a hundred more. The platform has announced a record-breaking slate of 100 plus premieres across languages, cementing its claim as India’s “Home for Action” while widening its cinematic jungle to embrace regional storytelling.

    In just five years, Lionsgate Play has grown from a niche Hollywood service into a full-blown entertainment powerhouse now reaching over 40 million viewers through a vast distribution network that stretches from metros to mini-screens. Its latest evolution? A blend of blockbuster swagger and local soul.

    2025 was the turning point. With audiences increasingly vibing to Southern storytelling, Lionsgate Play turned its camera beyond Los Angeles, premiering Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam titles like Dakshina, Eleven, Soothravakyam, and Racharikam. The result was pure box-office streaming energy, a 40 per cent surge in consumption, even as the global industry reeled from the Hollywood strikes of 2024.

    And now, 2026 promises an even bolder leap. The platform’s upcoming lineup is stacked like never before, a global-meets-local buffet of spectacle and storytelling.

    The Hollywood big guns are back: From Gerard Butler’s Greenland: Migration to Angelina Jolie’s Kiss of the Spider Woman, and from Mutiny to The Rivals of Amziah King, the slate packs serious star wattage with the likes of Jason Statham, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Alba, and Matthew McConaughey.

    The South stays strong: Building on its regional momentum, Lionsgate Play is rolling out 25 plus Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada titles, ensuring that cinematic flavour flows from both sides of the equator.

    The Hindi turn: The streamer is also going desi in Delhi expanding into Hindi originals with a curated mix of crime thrillers, horror comedies, and game shows, each designed to tap India’s ever-evolving taste for drama with a twist.

    And the classics never fade: In between the new, Lionsgate Play is doubling down on its cult collection. Think Sherlock meets Spider-Man, Rambo joins Men in Black, and Charlie Chaplin shares screen space with Jumanji and Anaconda. A line-up tailor-made for every mood, every generation.

    JioStar ropes in Nidhi Maheshwari as senior brand manager

    MUMBAI: JioStar has appointed Nidhi Maheshwari as senior brand manager for brand marketing strategy at JioHotstar, following the recent transition of Disney+ Hotstar operations to JioStar in India.

    Maheshwari, who moved to JioStar in December 2024, has been instrumental in the platform’s relaunch strategy. In her previous role at Disney+ Hotstar, she served as senior marketing manager for content marketing, where she led several successful campaigns including the award-winning launch of The Night Manager which achieved record awareness scores with optimised marketing spend. The campaign secured gold at the 2023 Promax Asia awards.

    Her experience includes launching streaming platforms in India, having previously led Lionsgate Play’s market entry in December 2020. Her career spans roles at major consumer brands including Parle Agro, where she managed the Appy Fizz portfolio and key partnerships including Bigg Boss, and Unilever’s Lakmé division, where she handled fashion week marketing and strategic alliances.

    In her current role, Maheshwari is spearheading JioHotstar’s brand expansion initiatives across entertainment, sports, and regional content segments as the platform establishes itself under new ownership.

    MUMBAI: There was a gap in the entertainment offerings that mobile telco Vi was giving to its subscribers under its Movies & TV section: that of certain Hollywood titles.

    Now that gap has been filled with its partnership with Lionsgate Play to make its slate of films like John Wick, The Hunger Games, and Saw, alongside standout titles such as Past Lives, Tokyo Vice, Paris Has Fallen, Normal People, Operation Fortune, Plane, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, The Iron Claw, The Beekeeper, Arcadian, and more available to subscribers, apart from award shows like the Primetime Emmy Awards, Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice, and BAFTA Awards,.

    The Vi movies and TV section  has a wide selection of content, ranging from Disney+ Hotstar, SonyLiv, Zee5 to Fancode for sports as well as regional content from Sun Nxt ManoramaMax, Nammaflix, Klikk and Chaupal. It also offers 300+ Live TV Channels including 30+ live news channels.

    Prasar Bharati launches OTT Waves at IFFI Goa

    MUMBAI: It’s hoping to make waves amongst streaming consumers and viewers of its linear TV network. State-owned pubcaster Prasar Bharati  today announced the launch of its own OTT platform branded Waves, offering a broad spectrum of entertainment and news content at the opening ceremony of the International Film Festival of India in Goa. 

    Available for android and iOs devices, it offers around 70  live channels including  B4U Bhojpuri, B4U Music, B4U Kadak, B4U Movies, GNT, Indian Today, ABP News, Divya, Republic, Republic Bharat, News Nation, Pitaara, News 24, PTC Punjabi Gold, PTC Punjabi, Times Now Navbharat, News 18 India, 9XM, NDTV India, TV9 Bharatvarsh, E24, News 24, Dabang, 9X Jalwa, 9X Jakhaas, 9X Tashan, Aaj Tak, Sanskar, Satsang, Raj TV, USPL, ABZY Movies, ABZY Dhaakad, Mayaboli, Masti, and NewsX. This apart, close to 34 of its own channels are available for viewing. 

    Waves also has a slew of original programmes from DD National including Fauji 2, an agricultural reality show Khet Khet May, Swarajya, Cybercrime, Rang mein Rang Ganga,  among other shows. A new version of Ramayan  from the house of Sagar is slated to launch soon. Old DD shows of the eighties and nineties, and others from PTC Punjabi complete the package on offer. 

    A catalogue of Hindi movies including Traffic Signal, Aarakshan, Khakee, Vodka Diaries, Phir Hera Pheri are available for viewing.  The international film slate appears to be worth watching: The Goes Wrong Show, The Monkey King, Mr Johnson, and The Hunger Games. But both the Hindi and international films are powered by  LionsgatePlay and are priced at Rs 399 per quarter. If viewers are not open to paying, they can consume a range of regional films which are dubbed in Hindi and can be watched for free. 

    Waves also has tabs offering live events, movies, shows, live TV, religious programming, archival documentaries, live radio, games, nostalgia, a shopping area linked to the open network for digital commerce, ebooks, a podcast and a creators’ corner.  

    The Waves app is available in three subscription offers. The first, a platinum annual subscription allows access to four devices simultaneously and is priced at 999 per annum while a diamond subscription has a sticker price of Rs 350 per annum for two devices. The gold pack which supposedly allows access to all content on Waves does not have a price tag attached in the subscription area.  

    In August, Prasar Bharati invited TV channels to join the platform, introducing a revenue-sharing model. Under this initiative, participating broadcasters receive 65 per cent of the ad revenue, while Prasar Bharati retains 35 per cent. Waves is offering t in SD, HD, and 4K, initially supporting 10 million concurrent users with scalability to 100 million.

    Mumbai: Lionsgate Play brings the dystopian action thriller Boy Kills World this 29 November. Starring Bill Skarsgård in a transformative role, alongside Jessica Rothe, Famke Janssen and Yayan Ruhian, this film packs an unforgettable punch. The story follows Boy, a deaf-mute who endures a brutal life by escaping into a vivid fantasy world. After his family is murdered, he trains under a mysterious shaman to become an unstoppable killing machine. Fueled by rage and thirst for revenge, he transforms his pain into power, setting off on a relentless quest to take down those responsible.

    Talking about Boy Kills World, lead actor Bill Skarsgård said, “This was one of the better scripts I’ve read. It’s an entertaining thrill ride with a unique tone and story. It’s very funny at times, but then it surprises you with a nuanced and emotional journey. The movie is told through Boy’s eyes, which brings home the tragic elements. His entire life has been about destruction.”

    Talking about his dramatic transformation for the role where he lost 20 pounds, building a lean and sinewy physique, he shared, “I also had to learn to fight from the ground up. It was a very short amount of time to do all that. I worked many hours just learning the basics. I wasn’t sure I could do it, but I watched a lot of martial arts movies to prepare.”

It was unveiled with a delightful performance by Rajeev Raja, and the mind behind the MMA-member company BrandMusiq that helped create the mogo. Not only does the mogo have a catchy ring to it, but also strong resonance with the distinguished values that Smarties represents. It drives the Smarties ethos of marketing excellence back home, and was very well received by the audience with its dynamic and impactful launch.
