MullenLowe Lintas Group wins big at 4A’s Jay Chiat Awards 2021

Mumbai: MullenLowe Lintas Group picked up two golds and an honourable mention for its work on Lifebuoy and Wheel, respectively in a virtual event held by 4A’s Jay Chiat Awards on 13 September. It is the only agency from India to win at 4A’s Jay Chiat Awards this year.

Out of the five shortlists made by MullenLowe Lintas Group, Lifebuoy – ‘H is for Handwashing’ won a gold each in the Healthcare Strategy and Global Strategy categories, and its campaign for Active Wheel – ‘Ghar Se Career’ got an honourable mention in the Product/Service Creation category.

4A’s Jay Chiat Awards recognises and celebrates brilliant strategic thinking in marketing, media, and advertising. It awards campaigns that have at their core a great strategy, a powerful creative idea, and a clear link between the two.

“4A’s Jay Chiat finds global acclaim and is possibly the toughest strategy award to win. It is a privilege for MullenLowe Lintas Group, India to have won it six times, something very few agencies in the world can boast of,” said MullenLowe Lintas Group- group CEO Virat Tandon. “The twin gold wins for Lifebuoy this year is a great endorsement for the purpose-led work we believe in driving for our brands. A big thank you to our clients at Unilever for wholeheartedly partnering us in our vision for the brand. Kudos also to our colleagues at MullenLowe Singapore, MullenLowe Salt and Weber Shandwick for supporting the ‘H is for Handwashing’ campaign. An honourable mention for another of our strong purpose-led work, the ‘Ghar se career’ project for Wheel is also very encouraging and spurs us to do better.”

“At Lintas, we have always been a passionate practitioner of purpose-led brand-building. While one campaign is of a global scale and the other focuses on the local insights, both have an element of purpose at their core, that has resulted in success for the brands in the marketplace as well as with the audience,” said Lowe Lintas CCOs Sagar Kapoor and Prateek Bhardwaj in a joint statement. “Both these brands are super active in their ‘brand do’ and shall continue to do so regardless of awards and rewards.”

It is notable that Lifebuoy’s ‘H is for Handwashing’ also grabbed two bronze Lions earlier this year at Cannes Lions 2021.

In the past, MullenLowe Lintas Group has made its mark at the coveted award show for its strategically strong work on Kissan, HUL’s Kan Khajura Tesan, Havells, and Idea Cellular.

  • Geometry Encompass, HUL address sanitation at Kumbh Mela 2019

Geometry Encompass, HUL address sanitation at Kumbh Mela 2019

MUMBAI: To address the issue of sanitation, Geometry Encompass conceptualised and created four campaigns for Hindustan Unilever’s home and personal care brands, namely Active Wheel, Lifebuoy, and Vim at the ongoing Kumbh Mela.

For Active Wheel, it surrounded its campaign around Kalpavas – a 30-day period of living in austerity and following a fixed schedule to transform the inner consciousness. Geometry Encompass recognised that it was a big challenge for the Kalpvasis to wear fresh clothes every day and thus conceptualised a unique ‘Wheel Wash-o-Cycle’ – a drum attached to a bicycle, which rotated on pedalling the cycle, recreating the function of a washing machine. Devotees simply had to fill the drum with water, add their clothes, sprinkle Active Wheel detergent powder, and pedal for 10-12 minutes, to enjoy fresh, clean clothes, free of cost.

Two such Wheel Wash Stations were set up at the Kalpavasi tent city, each with more than 20 installations of ‘Wheel Wash-o-Cycle’, which use no electricity, save water, and can be easily used by anyone. Active Wheel also ensured an adequate supply of clean water and drainage systems in place. Through this, over 30,000 devotees were able to enjoy the comfort of fresh clothes during the Kumbh Mela. The brand has decided to donate the Wheel Wash-o-Cycles to nearby villages, post Kumbh, thereby continuing to make a difference in people’s lives. Active Wheel will also train the villagers to make the machine themselves, thus reducing the effort needed for manually washing clothes and empowering women to realise their ‘Fresh Soch’. By these efforts, Wheel hopes to help women realise their own dreams and entrepreneurial aspirations, and even earn revenue that they can help their families with.

Geometry Encompass took the agenda of ensuring sanitation at the Kumbh Mela a step further when it worked with Lifebuoy and conceptualised two innovative campaigns to remind devotees to wash their hands after using the restroom as well as before eating their meals.

In the first campaign, they developed an innovative ink after 3 months of rigorous research and testing. The ink was developed into a stamp which becomes an active reminder to wash hands. A visual red stamp was marked by over 150 Lifebuoy representatives who stamped 10,000 hands per day. As the devotees put their hands under a tap, the stamp lathered into soap and helped provide superior germ protection, ensuring a hygienic stay at the Kumbh. As a result, there were several attendees who approached promoters to have their hands re-stamped for later, and used a total of 3 lakh stamps to wash 6 lakh hands over the 30 days activity.

Taking it one notch higher, Geometry Encompass and Lifebuoy distributed thalis, which were engraved with a message – ‘Kripaya pehle sabun se haath dhoyein’ (please wash your hands with soap first). The Lifebuoy branding was a part of the thalis which were distributed at meal centres, to be washed and reused, effectively delivering the message to millions of visitors. Lifebuoy also addressed the issue of washing one’s hands after visiting the washroom by stamping the hands of those using public restrooms with an ink that had a layer of soap on it. The ink dissolved on contact with water, ensuring their hands were washed thoroughly.

Appreciating Lifebuoy’s efforts, ACMO Dr VK Mishra, nodal officer sanitation Kumbh Mela Prayagraj said, “We appreciate the role played by Lifebuoy as ‘Swasthya Sehbhagi’ (Hygiene Partner) in this grand event to spread the message of hygiene and sanitation. We are hopeful that these initiatives will help drive a behavioral change among the masses.”

Geometry Encompass also highlighted the efficacy of Vim dishwashing soap by replacing mirrors in public restrooms with thalis washed with the brand. The plates were so clean and shiny that the reflective surfaces acted like mirrors.

Speaking on the successful conceptualisation and execution of these campaigns, Geometry Encompass CEO Sukrit Singh said, “These campaigns are testament to a fulfilling two decade long partnership with HUL. I am proud that this partnership beyond the realm of advertising, is focusing on behavioural change instead. We, at Geometry-Encompass, strive to create pivotal consumer experiences in all the work we do. The year has just begun and we have already rolled out two of the most talked about campaigns at the Kumbh, I can’t wait for everyone to see what else we have in store!”

Geometry Encompass managing partner Shankar Shinde said, “Geometry Encompass collaborated with HUL to play a pivotal role in creating impactful, purpose driven campaigns during Kumbh 2019. Be it the Lifebuoy Hygiene Stamp – that washes away germs and preconceived notions about personal hygiene and handwashing, or the Wheel Wash-o-Cycle, that inculcates the philosophy of “Pehno Fresh and Socho Fresh”. Fresh thinking is optimising the mundane task of washing clothes, encouraging women to fulfil their dreams in the time saved. These campaigns, embedded with a strong purpose of helping consumers at large, have helped create a lasting impact for HUL at the Kumbh.”

Geometry Encompass executive creative director Arpan Jain added, “Being committed to inspiring action through behaviour and experience-led ideas, we’re constantly trying to move away from the idea of ‘sheep dipping’ people in a brand, and instead, focusing on creating behavioural change. While we recognise that habits do not change by just spreading the word; we also need to provide the right reasoning and tools at the right moment! With our Wheel Wash-o-Cycle and Lifebuoy Stamp of Hygiene campaigns, we are doing just that, providing consumers the right reasons and tools to enable behavioural change.”

  • Lifebuoy acknowledged as ‘Swasthya Sehbhagi’ at Kumbh Mela 2019

MUMBAI: Kumbh Mela authorities have recognised the efforts of Lifebuoy in encouraging people to adopt the healthy habit of hand-washing through a series of highly innovative initiatives and has acknowledged it as ‘Swasthya Sehbhagi’ in the ongoing edition of the fair,

Appreciating Lifebuoy’s efforts at the Kumbh Mela, Kumbh Mela Prayagraj nodal officer sanitation VK Mishra said, “We appreciate the role played by Lifebuoy as ‘Swasthya Sehbhagi’ (hygiene partner) in this grand event to spread the message of hygiene and sanitation. We are hopeful that these initiatives will help drive a behavioral change among the masses.”

Shedding light on the recognition and thought process behind the interventions, HUL skin cleansing general manager Harman Dhillon shared, “It is matter of great honour to be recognised by the Kumbh authority for our efforts as ‘Swasthya Sehbhagi’. Recognitions like these reaffirm our belief and serve as motivation to keep innovating with our approach to encourage more and more people to adopt hand washing before eating and after using the toilet as a habit.”

Lifebuoy, which debuted Roti with a hand washing message at the last Kumbh, has now taken that thought a few steps further, with interventions around two key hand washing occasions – after toilet, and before consuming food.

Lifebuoy has activated ‘Lifebuoy Stamp of Hygiene – After Toilet Protection’, ‘Vote for Good Health, Vote for Lifebuoy!’, and ‘Lifebuoy Swasthya Chetna Thali’ initiatives at Kumbh Mela 2019.

Adding further on Lifebuoy’s mission on lifesaving, HUL general manager of skin cleansing Harman Dhillon said, “Lifebuoy is committed to finding ways to protect people from illnesses and improve health outcomes, one wash of hands at a time.”

  • Lifebuoy partners Kumbh Mela 2019 to drive healthy habit of handwashing

Lifebuoy partners Kumbh Mela 2019 to drive healthy habit of handwashing

MUMBAI: Lifebuoy has partnered with Kumbh to promote the healthy habit of washing hands before consuming food using the innovative ‘Swasthya Chetna Thalis’. The Thalis come with an etched message of “Kripaya Pehle Sabun se Haath Dhoyein” (Please, first wash your hands using soap), that is a clear call to action to anyone who has sat down for a meal without a simple wash of hands which could prevent many illnesses.

Along with the Kumbh, the largest congregation of human beings in the world, Lifebuoy is also taking this idea to 35 other religious congregations that serve food to devotees, with an estimated annual footfall of 20 crore.

Shedding light on the thought behind the innovation, HUL general manager of skin cleansing Harman Dhillon said, “Lifebuoy aims to harness the power of small actions that can unlock big differences – like the simple act of handwashing which can ensure measurably improved health for the whole family. We hope a simple reminder right before someone eats food can trigger a meaningful change in habit encouraging more and more people to wash their hands before eating. Lifebuoy is committed to finding ways to protect people from illnesses and improve health outcomes, one wash of hands at a time.”

Lifebuoy had previously used the Kumbh to remind people to wash their hands with a message printed on a roti. During the Kumbh held in 2013, Lifebuoy had partnered more than 100 dhabas and hotels at the Mela to serve rotis that were stamped with ‘Lifebuoy se haath dhoye kya?’ The company had made special heat stamps to make an impression of its message on rotis at 100 kitchens across the mela. The initiative with the handwashing message was widely acclaimed.

Lifebuoy’s automated hand sanitiser dispenser for festive season

MUMBAI: India,is a land of millions of gods and festivals with each occasion seeing a vast number of people in a perfect melting pot of devotion, celebration and food.

From the warm khichudi as bhog in pandals to the street stalls set up to serve delectable dishes, food is an important and indispensable part of the festive fervour. More often than not, food is eaten with unwashed hands due to lack of hand-washing facilities like soap and water. A simple act of cleaning hands before eating food can help protect people from these disease-causing germs.

Lifebuoy, a germ protection soap – noticed this need and decided to address it in form of a “blessing gesture” weaved into an innovative design – the Lifebuoy Germ Nashini conceptualised by Lowe Lintas.

The device dispenses Lifebuoy Hand Sanitizer quickly and conveniently for devotees, killing 99.99 per cent of the germs on hands without water. It is easy-to-use and has been prominently placed in pandals so that the devotees can proceed to eat with clean hands.

This activity to build importance of hand hygiene among devotees has been supported by brand ambassador and Bollywood icon Kajol as well. Lifebuoy #GermNashini has been installed in three cities and being used to amplify awareness of hand hygiene through multiple social media platform.

    (a) 100,00,000 = 100 lakh = 10,000,000 = 10 million = 1 crore.
    (b) 10,000 lakh = 100 crore = 1 arab = 1 billion.
    (2) All numbers mentioned in this report are standalone numbers of HUL, unless stated otherwise.

HUL chairman Harish Manwani said, “In challenging markets and a deflationary cost environment, we have delivered another year ofcompetitive and profitable growth. Our sustained focus on investing behind brands, sharpeningour executional capabilities anddriving market development has enabled us to keep winning with consumers in a rapidly changing market.”

    Trends:

This year, HUL’s marketing spends have been the highest in terms of absolute rupees. Over a four year period starting FY-13 until FY-16, HUL’s ASP has been the highest in terms of percentage of TIO at 14.1 percent. Even on a y-o-y basis, its ASP has been higherin terms of absolute rupees as well as on a percentage of TIO basisacross all the four quarters in fiscal 2015-16 as compared to the four quarters of fiscal 2014-15.

For Q4-16 (quarter ended March 31, 2016, current quarter) ASP was 6 percent more year-over-year (y-o-y) at Rs 1,089.95 crore (13.7 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 1,027.89 crore but was 4.2 percent lower quarter-over-quarter (q-o-q) as compared to Rs 1,137.79 crore (14.3 percent of TIO).

Please refer to Fig A below. ASP shows linear increasing trend, both interms of absolute rupees as well as in terms of ASP as percentage of TIO during the sixteen quarter period under consideration in this report.

It is seen from Fig A, that HUL’s ASP is generally the highest in absolute rupees in Q1 of a fiscal, the only exception being FY-14, when Q2-14 and Q3-14 ASP were higher that Q1-14 ASP. However, Q1 ASP has always been higher in absolute rupees than the previous year’s Q4 ASP. Based on this trend, it is likely that HUL’s ASP in Q1-17 will be more than or equal to Rs 1,090 crore

The company’s TIO in the current year increased 3.8 percent to Rs 31,987.17 crore as compared to Rs 30,805.62 crore in FY-15. TIO in the current quarter increased 3.5 percent y-o-y at Rs 7,945.66 crore from Rs 7,675.63 crore andwas almost flat (declined by 0.4 percent) q-o-q as compared to Rs 7,980.99 crore in Q3-16. Please refer to Fig B below. TIO shows a linear increasing trend during the sixteen quarter period under consideration in this report.

HUL’s Profit after Tax (PAT) in FY-16 declined 5.4 percent to Rs 4,082.37 crore (12.8 percent margin) as compared to Rs 4,315.26 crore (14 percent margin).
