    Life of Pi to release in India on 21 November

    MUMBAI: Director Ang Lee‘s Life of Pi will be released in India on 21 November, ahead of its worldwide opening.

    According to Fox Star Studios, the distributor of the film in India, it will be one of the biggest releases of all time for a Hollywood film in India, with more than 1000 screens. It will occupy around 350 screens in 3D in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

    Life of Pi is based on Yann Martel‘s Booker prize winning novel. The film centres an Indian boy Pi, a zookeeper‘s son who finds himself in the company of a hyena, zebra, orangutan, and a Bengal tiger after a shipwreck sets them adrift in the Pacific Ocean.

    Lee had chose 17 year old Delhite Suraj Sharma to essay the role of Pi. He has no previous acting experience and was cast following an audition of over 3000 young men.

    The rest of the cast include artistes like Tabu, Irrfan Khan and Gerard Depardieu among others.

    MUMBAI: Taking a cue from producer Jon Landau who came here to promote Titanic 3D,Taiwanese-American filmmaker Ang Lee will come to India sometime in December to promote his upcoming film Life of Pi.

    Confirming the same an officer from the press division of the Taiwan embassy said, “As far as we know, he is coming this year.”

    The novel, set in Puducherry of the 1970S, narrates the ordeals of a young Indian boy, the lone survivor of a shipwreck, sharing a life boat for over 200 days with a hyena, a zebra with a broken leg, a female orangutan and a 45-pound Royal Bengal tiger.

    The 57-year-old Lee had reportedly shot about 30 per cent of the film in Puducherry early last year after a six-month recce with his pre-production team.

    The 3D fantasy adventure, based on the Booker-winning novel of the same name by Yann Martel, also has Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Tobey Maguire and Gerard Depardieu.

    MUMBAI: Fox Filmed Entertainment has announced that Elizabeth Gabler has renewed her deal as president of Fox 2000 Pictures. The studio has also announced that Jessica Goodman has joined Fox 2000 Pictures as executive vp production and Marisa Paiva has been promoted from creative executive to director of development.

    In about 12 years that Gabler has been in charge, Fox 2000 has consistently produced at least one or two sizable hits most years. “For the past 12 years, Elizabeth’s savvy, vision and taste has taken Fox 2000 Pictures to a level of success and accomplishment that exceeded our already high expectations,” Fox said in a statement.

    Among the films she has overseen are Walk the Line, The Devil Wears Prada, Marley & Me and the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies, which the studio says have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.

    Forthcoming films that would come out of the Fox 2000 stable this year include Life of Pi, directed by Ang Lee; Guernsey, directed by Kenneth Branagh and the sequel Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters.

    Goodman was recently with Warner Bros. where she was executive vp production overseeing projects such as Contagion, I Am Legend, Oceans 11 (and its two sequels), Michael Clayton and The Informant.

    Paiva is working on Life of Pi. Last year, she was creative executive on Water for Elephants.

    Irrfan Khan signs third international film

    MUMBAI: After having worked in films like The Amazing Spider-Man, and Ang Lee‘s Life of Pi, Irrfan Khan has been signed to work in an Indo-European venture titled Qissa. The film is being co-produced by German-Dutch-French and NFDC.

    NFDC managing director Nina Lath Gupta said, “Germany‘s Heimat Films met up with us at Rotterdam Cinemart. They are the principal producers of the film, and then, Dutch production house Augustus Films, France‘s Cine-Sud and India‘s NFDC joined hands. We have planned at a medium budget level.”

    Khan said, “I am excited about this venture. Set in the interiors of 1940s Punjab, Qissa will revolve around a logger who is seeking to rebuild his life after the Partition of India. A fine emotional narrative, it also explores his relationship with his son.”

    The film will be made in Punjabi with subtitles for an international audience, and will be distributed worldwide.
