    MWG India forms Creative Central with Praduymna Chauhan as ECD

    MUMBAI: McCann Worldgroup India has formed a special unit – Creative Central – which will work towards creating insightful creative work for its clients.

    It will be spearheaded by Praduymna Chauhan as the ECD.

    Welcoming Praduymna on board, McCann Worldgroup India and south Asia, chairman, CEO and chief creative officer, Prasoon Joshi said, “With a sharp and insightful approach reinforced by a stellar body of work, Pradyumna is keen to create work that impacts popular culture. Based currently in Mumbai, he will work with our creative directors and teams across McCann India offices and functions on our key brands. In the near future we will find more people with a similar skill set and approach to strengthen McCann Creative Central.”

    Praduymna has worked on numerous popular creatives like MP Tourism Ajab Hai and Colours campaigns, Asian Paints, Star‘s Satyamev Jayate, Vodafone ICICI and Birla Sun Life‘s Jab Tak Balla Chalta Hai.

    Before joining MWG he was Group creative director at Ogilvy Mumbai. He has worked, apart from the above mentioned, also on Airtel, LG Electronics, General Motors, HPCL etc. His work has won him recognition at Adfest, Cannes, Spikes, New York Fest, Abbies, Effies and AMEs.

    The unit will work closely with the strategic planning function to constantly create insightful work and solutions for MWG clients. Creative Central will also constantly leverage the knowledge base generated at Truth Central (A McCann insight arm) and play a major role in converting the knowledge and insights across brands in India.

    Reprise Media bags LG Electronics’ digital biz

    MUMBAI: Reprise Media has bagged the digital duties for LG Electronics’ range of products including ACs, refrigerators, microwaves, washing machines and vacuum cleaners.

    The agency bagged the account following a multi-agency pitch for each of these product lines.

    The scope of work includes providing strategy for media and communication, creative services and production, product website development and providing ideas across social media and activation.

    LG India VP-marketing L.K.Gupta said, “We met up with a lot of digital agencies, but found Reprise Media to be strategically sound and experts in the digital medium. They came to us with innovative ideas which were completely rooted in sound business logic. We have selected them because of their specialised team and out of box ideas.”

    TV remote inventor Robert Adler passes away

    MUMBAI: Robert Adler, co-inventor of the TV remote, has passed away.

    Adler, who won an Emmy Award along with fellow engineer Eugene Polley for the device that made the couch potato possible, died a few days ago of heart failure at a Boise nursing home at the age of 93
    His developments spanned from the Golden Age of Television into the High-Definition Era, earning him more than 180 US patents. The US Patent and Trademark Office published his most recent patent application, for advances in touch-screen technology, on 1 February 2007.

    His six-decade career with Zenith Electronics Corporation began in 1941 when he joined Zenith’s research division. He was named associate director in 1952, vice president in 1959, and vice president and director of research in 1963. He retired as research vice president in 1979, and served Zenith as a technical consultant until 1999, when Zenith merged with LG Electronics.

    In the consumer electronics field, Dr. Adler has been widely recognised as the co-inventor (with fellow Zenith engineer Eugene Polley) of the wireless TV remote. Dr. Adler’s ‘Space Command’ ultrasonic remote control for TV sets was introduced by Zenith in 1956. He received the 1958 Outstanding Technical Achievement Award of the Institute of Radio Engineers (now the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE) for his “original work on ultrasonic remote controls” for television state media reports.

    Warner, LG look to resolve confusion in HD DVD arena with hybrid offerings

    MUMBAI: Right now high definition (HD) DVDs have not taken off in the US due to the prevailing system of two incompatible formats.

    One is blu ray which has the backing of Sony and the other is HD DVD which has the backing of Toshiba. Now however there could be some light at the end of the tunnel.

    Warner Bros. media reports state will introduce a high-definition DVD that can hold films and TV shows in rival and incompatible formats. Warner said that it developed the Total HD Disc.

    Warner Bros. will place both formats of movies on a single disc. This though shows that there is no resolution on a single format.

    Meanwhile LG Electronics is planning to market a dual-format DVD player. Other electronics makers are expected to do the same.

    Warner Bros. has also patented a disc that can hold three versions of a film — one in each of the rival high-def formats and a third that can be viewed on standard-definition players. This eliminates the need for the consumer to upgrade his DVD if he/she does not want HD in the first place. Reports add that from a technological standpoint this could be as groundbeaking as when LP records were introduced in the late 1940’s.

    MUMBAI: The Korea based consumer electronics major LG Electronics has appointed Yong Nam as the new vice chairman and CEO, with effect from 1 January. Overall top management changes at LG Electronics include appointments of two new business company CEOs, CFO, Head of Korea sales and marketing operation and 30 other executives.

    The company says that the appointment of Nam, known for his drive and strategic outlook, signifies that LG Electronics is making the change to becoming more achievement-oriented. Nam has more than 30 years of experience in LG Electronics, LG Corporation and LG Telecom; prior to his appointment, he served as the head of strategic business of LG Corporation.

    He also served as LG Telecom CEO and director from October 1998 through May 2006. Other previous roles include president of the former Multimedia Division of LG Electronics from December 1997 to October 1998 and Executive Vice President of LG Group Chairman’s Office from January 1997 to December 1997. Nam began his career in LG Electronics in 1976, and began working for the chairman’s office in 1989.

    Other newly-appointed top executives of LG Electronics include Simon Kang as CEO of Digital Display Company. Skott Ahn as CEO of Mobile Communications Company; James Jeong as CFO; and Wayne Park as Head of Korea sales and marketing.

    Kang is the man behind LG’s rebranding success in the US, while Ahn is a mobile communications expert. Jeong is best-known for his achievement of LG’s global management system enhancement. And Mr. Park has worked on new business development for LG Electronics.

    LG Electronics also appointed three new executives in other regions, including John Herington and Eric Surdej as the marketing heads of LG Electronics’ US and France divisions, respectively, as well as Dominique Oh as the head of European Mobile Communications.

    MUMBAI: LG Electronics has appointed K.I. Kwon as its president in the US for its consumer electronics division.

    Kwon was most recently LG Electronics VP digital display division responsible for the US. Kwon is responsible for the overall management and direction of the consumer electronics, commercial products and information technology businesses.

    LG Electronics North American Headquarters president and CEO Michael Ahn says, “K.I. Kwon has extensive experience in digital display and digital media products as well as with the LG brand in North America and globally, making him the ideal candidate for this position. His fresh ideas and strong leadership skills will provide the insight and direction as LG continues to expand its consumer electronics presence and build its premium brand in the United States.”

    KTF Korea launches nationwide Ultra-High Speed Wireless Network with LG-Norte

    MUMBAI: KTF, one of South Korea’s prominent cellular providers, has launched a next-generation ultra-high speed 3.5G wireless network in Seoul and cities across South Korea using wireless broadband technology from LG-Nortel, a joint venture of LG Electronics and Nortel.

    The network supports advanced handset capabilities including high-definition (HD) video, video chatting, messaging and remote monitoring, claims an official release.

    The new 3.5G HSDPA, handset-based service is being launched with two handset models in the initial deployment – including the first HSDPA phone from LG Electronics, the LG-KH1000. A further four to five handsets are planned later in the year. KTF’s new service is branded ‘WorldPhone View’, a name representing ‘the world at your fingertips’ through access to video and collaborative multimedia applications.

    KTF’s HSDPA mobile communications will be rolled out in 50 cities across South Korea beginning 30 June. LG-Nortel is the primary network supplier and is the exclusive vendor for 34 cities including the vast Seoul metropolitan area which alone accounts for almost 50 percent of the total population of Korea. It is estimated that 80 per cent of the country’s population will be able to access the service by the end of August 2006. A further 34 cities will be added by year-end, raising that figure to over 90 percent of the population, according to KTF estimates, the release adds.

    “The launch of our ‘WorldPhone View’ HSDPA service is a key component of KTF’s portfolio of next-generation mobile services,” says KTF EVP Won-Jin Park. “We chose LG-Nortel as the primary supplier for our UMTS/HSDPA network based on its strong technology credentials and our existing relationship. LG-Nortel has successfully implemented a world-class network which allows us to implement groundbreaking services as we enhance the mobile communications experience for all our customers.”

    “LG Nortel, with the strong support of our parent companies Nortel and LGE, has implemented a secure, reliable, high-speed network to support the innovative range of services and applications KTF is launching to its customers,” says LG-Nortel chairman on the board Peter MacKinnon. “Korea leads the world in wireless broadband and LG-Nortel plays an integral role in ensuring the continuation of that success. We will work closely with KTF on the evolution of their network to support higher uplink speeds and ever-more sophisticated service requirements in the future.”

    A key differentiator of HSDPA compared to current technologies is its ability to support high-speed, real-time HD video content. ‘WorldPhone View’ users will be able to access a variety of new services, including video SMS, video ringtone services, video chatting, video ad messaging and video remote monitoring – as well as high-quality video telephony. High-speed broadband capabilities will also enhance music downloads and high-volume multimedia collaboration and set the foundation for more sophisticated online gaming applications.

    The two HSDPA handsets being launched will also support universal integrated circuit (IC) cards, allowing access to secure transactions for transportation, membership, mobile banking and credit card services, informs the release.

    Tri-Vision US V-chip patent licensed to Humax

    MUMBAI: Tri-Vision International Ltd has licensed its V-chip technology to Humax Co. Ltd. of Korea, which is a leading digital satellite set-top box manufacturer.

    The license is valid through the expiration of the patent in 2016.

    “We are delighted to award a US license to one of the world’s leading digital satellite set-top box manufacturers. Humax is exporting an extensive array of diversified digital television products and will play an important role in North America’s transition to digital television,” said Tri-Vision CEO Najmul Siddiqui.

    The Humax licensing agreement resulted from negotiations, similar to those that are currently ongoing with the some 20 other companies who have expressed their intent to acquire Tri-Vision’s US V-chip license.

    As part of the transition to a digital television broadcast system in the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has mandated new rules to ensure that the V-chip can respond to rating system changes in all digital television receiver products. Tri-Vision’s open V-chip (also known as V-chip 2.0) is the only known, patented technology capable of accepting modified or new rating systems. The FCC rules took effect 15 March 2006.

    Companies which have acquired V-chip licenses for Tri-Vision’s Canadian Patent No. 2,179,474 and/or U.S. Patent 5,828,402 include Sony, Hitachi, Sanyo, Philips, JVC, Matsushita, Sharp, Pioneer, Apex Digital, Samsung, LG Electronics, Funai, Orion, Toshiba, Eastech, Erae Electronics, Seiko Epson, Shenzhen KXD, Newlane, Xiamen, Konka, Optoma, Coretronic, TTE, Syntax-Brillian, Akai, Chunghwa, NEC, Viewsonic amongst others.
