Cairns Crocodiles make waves in India ahead of 2026 festival

MUMBAI: At the thoroughfares of Juhu Tara Road, inside the warm and welcoming setting of Soho House Mumbai, Misfits Media CEO David Hovenden and Cairns Crocodiles Special Envoy Sangeeta Leach unleashed the India chapter for the Asia-Pacific creative community, of three days of awards, masterclasses, and industry networking event planned for May 12–14, 2026, in Cairns, Australia.

The exclusive evening brought together bigwigs from leading marketing, advertising, and creative agencies such as Leo Burnett, Lintas, Brandmusiq, and Schbang. The room bustled with laughter, lively and insightful conversations, and a shared joie de vivre about the media, entertainment and advertising industry as Hovenden and Leach spoke about how Cairns Crocodiles aims to be a stepping stone for creative minds across the world.

In a candid tête-à-tête with Indian Television’s Megha Misra, CEO David Hovenden recalled how the idea of starting the festival was conceived in the most unexpected of times, during the peak of the pandemic.

“In 2020, when covid happened, we said, this is going to happen. And we tried to stand the event up. But because of the changing nature of covid and border restrictions, we had to reschedule it five times.” Hovenden noted. “Australia’s states had different rules, and people weren’t even allowed to move within them. So we kept shifting dates, hoping we could finally make it work. Every time we cancelled and moved it again, more people got on board, cheering us on and barracking for us.”

What began as a logistical nightmare soon turned into a marketing success. “Who would’ve thought covid could be a brilliant marketing tool?” he added. “Everyone felt sorry for us and they started rooting for us. In the end, it worked out brilliantly.”

After two years of perseverance, Hovenden and his team realised they had built something people truly loved. “We started seeing participants not just from across Australia, but also from parts of Asia,” he said. “That’s when we knew it was time to grow… to make it bigger and more inclusive.”

The decision was made to transform the event into a truly Asia-Pacific celebration and introduce a dedicated awards programme to honour creativity across the region. “It couldn’t just be an Australian event,” Hovenden explained. “We’re part of a wider creative region, and it was important to reflect that inclusivity.”

And that’s how the Cairns Crocodiles came to life, evolving from the tongue-in-cheek name into a full-fledged festival of creativity and connection.

“Over the past three years, we’ve travelled to India, Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Korea, inviting people to participate, collaborate and showcase their best work,” Hovenden noted. “We’re finally seeing that momentum build.”

Before moving to address the attendees at the soiree, Hovenden brought out a set of the ‘Hatchlings’ awards, the festival’s category for young participants under 30. The Hatchlings trophies are particularly special. Each team receives two separate trophies, one for each member, designed in the shape of a young crocodile hatchling. When placed together, the two pieces form a single trophy, embodying both teamwork and the festival’s spirit of nurturing new talent. The playful design also inspired the name “Hatchlings,” symbolising the next generation of creative professionals ready to make their mark.

The Cairns Crocodiles Festival celebrates world-class creativity across advertising, marketing, media and brand. In 2025 more than 2,100 of the region’s most influential agency leaders, marketers and rising stars descended on Cairns for three days of awards, inspiration, learning and unforgettable networking.

Early ticket sales and enquiries are pointing to this number ballooning out to more than 3000 high powered delegates for 2026, with an expanded presence in particular from India.

With an ambitious objective to surpass previous participation turnout, Hovenden didn’t shy away from setting a bold target.

“I want to have over 5,000 participants next year,” he said. “With India having some of the sharpest creative minds and the most dynamic storytelling cultures in the world, we’re happy to encourage more participation from here.”

As the Cairn Crocodiles CEO put it, this wasn’t just another meet-and-greet, it was a teaser of what’s to come. The Cairns Crocodiles, often dubbed the ‘Cannes of the Asia-Pacific’, are eyeing India as a key creative hub and a vital audience for their upcoming 2026 edition.

“We’re here to build genuine partnerships, not just host an event,” Hovenden added. “This is the beginning of an exciting creative bridge between Australia and India.”

Taking a cue from Hovenden, co-founder Sangeeta Leach spoke about the spirit that defines the festival. “I think the most important thing about the Cairns Crocs is that creativity is something we take very seriously. We’re fun, we’re candid, we’re honest. We are real.”

There were also two past jury members of Cairns, guests of honour and long-time friends present at the soiree, who shared their own experiences with the festival: Ex-BBH & Publicis Worldwide, India CEO Subhash Kamath and Brandmusiq CEO and founder Rajeev Raja. The two friends reminisced about their vibrant experiences at the event in Cairns.

“I found that at Cairns, there’s a real genuineness and intellectual honesty in the way ideas are nurtured. After graduating and earning my PhD, it felt refreshing to return to that kind of nurturing environment, almost like being back in a nursery. That’s the kind of simplicity and honesty with which Cairns has truly flourished,” shared Kamath, encouraging his fellow attendees to spread the word that Cairns in Tropical North Queensland, Australia is the place to be.

His sentiments were echoed by his dear friend Rajeev Raja, who said he had an absolute blast attending the Cairns Crocodiles in 2025.

“I found the attendees in Cairns to be incredibly welcoming, inspiring and a whole lot of fun. I was particularly taken with keynote speaker Olympic gold medallist Ariarne Titmus,” said Raja, who enthralled crowds in 2025 with an onstage performance with his legendary jazz flute.

Another significant announcement made at the event was that the Cairns Crocodiles would officially be opening a permanent Indian Office with the promotion of Bhavika Sharma to general manager India.

“I am delighted to be moving to the land of my parent’s birth and super excited to be calling Mumbai, the city of dreams, my new home. I look forward to continuing to engage the marvellous Indian creative community and bringing many of you across to Cairns in May 2026,” said Sharma.

The 2026 edition of the Cairns Crocodiles promises to be bigger and more inclusive than ever. The festival has expanded its awards categories to include new regional-specific Asia segments, designed to celebrate standout work from South-east, South and North-east Asia. For the first time, it will also introduce new regional awards that recognise market-leading campaigns across Asia-Pacific subregions.

The Hatchlings competition, which shines a spotlight on emerging talent, is also getting a creative boost, now welcoming entries in ‘Print & Publishing’ and ‘Out of Home’ categories to give young creatives even more ways to showcase their skills. The judging framework has been refined too, with a sharper focus on clarity, effectiveness and real-world impact.

To better accommodate international participants, deadlines for Hatchlings have been moved earlier, ensuring smoother visa processes for finalists. Additionally, the 2026 programming will embrace richer, more inclusive content that reflects the diversity and creative energy of the region.

  • Rivals unite to shape Mumbai’s creative future

Rivals unite to shape Mumbai’s creative future

MUMBAI: In an industry known for cutthroat competition, Mumbai’s ad world hit pause on rivalry for one night of pure creative synergy. Portfolio Night 2025, hosted by BBDO, DDB Mudra Group and TBWA India, wasn’t just about portfolios; it was about passion, purpose, and a pinch of personality.

Organised by The One Club for Creativity, the global event gathered students, recent grads and young professionals for a high-energy evening of one-on-one portfolio reviews. In fast-paced 15-minute sessions, hopefuls met top creative directors, got real feedback, and maybe even their big break.

DDB Mudra CCO Rahul Mathew, called it a necessity, not just a vision. “Our only real asset is talent. Events like this help us find, mentor and protect it, and that benefits everyone.

Each participant faced multiple rounds of reviews, rated on ideas, execution, originality, variety, consistency, presentation, and yes, attitude. But it wasn’t all critique and scorecards; it was also about connection.

FCB Group India digital creative partner Kartikeya Tiwari, said he looks beyond the basics, “I look for courage and personality. Most portfolios are skilful, but what stands out is soul.”

For FCB Group India CCO Neville Shah, the future needs boldness, “Some portfolios were too perfect. We need work that surprises us, that makes us say, ‘What is this?’”

Meanwhile, Leo Burnett national creative director Vikram Pandey (Spiky), found hope in the next generation’s openness to technology. “The ones embracing AI are the ones shaping the future. AI won’t take jobs, people who use AI well will.”

Among the buzzing crowd was Shivani Unnikrishnan, a student at École Intuit Lab, who left the night inspired, “It was our first time, and we learned so much. Meeting creative directors gave us new perspectives and confidence.”

At the close of the evening, Kareena and Sumit were crowned Mumbai’s All-Stars. They will now represent the city in the global All-Star programme, competing with winners from around the world. A final win could take them to New York City for a week-long, in-person workshop.

In the end, though, every participant walked away richer, with sharper insights, stronger networks and a renewed sense of creative confidence. Because at Portfolio Night, even rivals agree on one thing: when creativity wins, everyone does.

MUMBAI: Looks like Birla Opus is ready to brush away all consumer doubts quite literally. Birla Opus Paints, part of Aditya Birla Group’s Grasim Industries, has unveiled its new ‘Birla Opus Assurance’ campaign, a first-of-its-kind pledge in the Indian paint industry that promises to repaint homes free of charge if customers aren’t satisfied within a year.

The one-year repainting warranty covers all four seasons, putting walls through the ultimate weather test. This goes above and beyond the standard product warranty, signalling Birla Opus Paints’ confidence in its advanced formulations and service quality.

Fronting the colourful campaign are brand ambassadors Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, who don quirky avatars across multiple ad films. Adding extra sparkle to the ensemble are Ranveer Shorey, Murali Sharma, Seema Pahwa and Jaaved Jaaferi, each bringing humour and relatability to the brand’s promise. The ads cheekily thank the design and construction community contractors, architects, and dealers whose word-of-mouth recommendations continue to fuel Birla Opus’ growing popularity in the decorative paints market.

The ‘Birla Opus Assurance’ campaign will run across Hindi and regional languages, backed by a 360° push spanning TV, digital, and print. With India’s decorative paint sector seeing fierce competition, Birla Opus has taken a bold stroke, one that promises to keep consumers covered, rain or shine.

  • Lenovo sets up camp to call out campers in clever gaming crackdown

Lenovo sets up camp to call out campers in clever gaming crackdown

MUMBAI: Gamers hiding in corners just got cornered by a laptop upgrade. In a cheeky ambush inside one of India’s most popular shooter games, Lenovo India, with Intel and Leo Burnett, has launched Gamers on Duty, a guerrilla-style campaign that calls out “campers” mid-battle and offers them a shot at redemption: a discount on Lenovo Legion laptops.

For the uninitiated, “camping” in gaming lingo is the much-despised strategy of hiding in one spot and picking off opponents from cover, much to the annoyance of serious players. But Gamers on Duty flips the script recognising that many Indian gamers aren’t camping by choice, but by compulsion. Outdated hand-me-down laptops, dad’s office machine, or just old tech struggling to keep up with today’s graphic-heavy games are pushing players into passive play.

So Lenovo and Intel assembled a squad of undercover operatives 12 of India’s top gaming influencers, wielding a cumulative reach of 20 million. These “agents” infiltrated live games, hunted down campers using an in-game feature that allows a brief 15-second chat when a player is caught and used that vulnerable moment to serve up an unexpected offer: ditch the lag, grab a Lenovo Legion.

By turning a niche in-game mechanic into a pop-up sales pitch, the campaign reached players right when their frustration peaked slow machines, melting keyboards, and sluggish gameplay. The result? A deluge of hilarious, shareable content and a savvy new way to turn gameplay into advertising without feeling like advertising.

“At Lenovo, we believe gamers deserve to experience every moment of their gameplay at its absolute best. With this campaign, we wanted to connect with them not just through screens, but in the heat of action at the very moment when outdated devices hold them back. Lenovo Legion is engineered to deliver uncompromised performance, so gamers can play fearlessly and experience their full potential. By meeting players exactly where they feel the need for better performance, we’re not just showcasing our technology – we’re empowering them to level up, quite literally.” said Lenovo India CMO, Chandrika Jain.

Publicis Groupe CCO for South Asia and Leo chairman for South Asia Rajdeepak Das added “This is a great example of how data and tech come together to create a hyper-personalized campaign targeting campers who have been at the receiving end of hate from the entire gaming community. Our idea was to reach out to gamers while they were hiding because of slow laptops and put the brand’s message and offers in the right place, at the right time, and to the right audience.”

In short, Gamers on Duty proves that when it comes to clever marketing, it pays to play dirty, especially if you’re cleaning up the camping mess along the way.

Leo Burnett, Mondelez, & Ogilvy grab top honours at Ad Club’s Effies 2024

MUMBAI: It was a noisy, raucous evening to say the least with agency executives screaming, blowing hard into their whistles, cheering as award after award was announced.  But the Ad Club Mumba’s Effie Awards also left behind a lot of happy faces at the Sea Lawns at the Taj Land’s End Hotel in Mumbai’s Bandra suburb  on the evening of 24 January .

    Team Ogilvy

The winner of the Grand Effie for 2024 was Leo Burnett India for their work on Acko General insurance. The agency along with McCann Erickson definitely deserved another award: that of being the loudest bunch in the evening.

The brand that walked away  with the client Effie of the year was Mondelez India which is the third consecutive year it has managed this feat. Kudos to it for creating memories for siblings, for special occasions with its confectioneries, chocolates  along with its agencies.

    Team mondelez

The agency of the year was shockingly grabbed by Ogilvy India. It looked to be nowhere in the running. But it made a last minute dash taking home enough golds and silvers towards the last batch of awards to win the prestigious accolade. All in all it was a glorious memorable evening for Ogilvy India’s creative god Piyush Pandey who hesitatingly walked towards the stage amidst the melee of young executives who made a run for the stage when master of ceremonies Brian Tellis announced it as the winning agency .

The highlight of the evening was a tribute to Bhaskar Da or Dr Bhaskar Das or BD which was offered by Ad Club president Rana Barua. What was great was the noisy crowd went completely silent when Rana spoke about what made Bhaskar Da so special and his long association with the Ad Club and the media industry as a whole. A short film by Pradyuman about Bhaskar Da with Tellis providing the voice over moved Rana to tears as he finished his tribute.

The Effie India awards stand out as a unique celebration of creativity, strategy, and effectiveness, recognised not just by industry peers but also by clients and academics. This year, the awards attracted 1,152 entries from 75 agencies, affirming Effie India’s position as the second-largest Effie globally in terms of participation.

With over 1,152 entries, this year continues to set benchmarks for the industry.
