Nippon TV brews bold global play with Gyokuro Studio and LA hub

MUMBAI: Nippon TV is taking its global ambitions seriously—and stylishly. Japan’s leading multiplatform entertainment giant has just unveiled Gyokuro Studio, a premium content label for international audiences, and Nippon TV LA Business Office, a full-fledged U.S. outpost opening in July to chase co-productions and IP sales across North America and Latam.

The Tokyo-based Gyokuro Studio—named after Japan’s most exquisite green tea—plans to roll out 10 unscripted titles a year, aiming for a full-bodied portfolio of 100 global-ready formats in the next decade. It promises the same handcrafted quality as its namesake tea, brewed through a blend of in-house talent and heavyweight co-creators. Think less sushi bar, more global showbiz kitchen.

Kenichiro Akiyama, veteran chief producer of prime-time hits, will head the new studio. “We are restructuring our production framework from a domestic-focused model to one designed for global rollout, accelerating the development of a robust foundation for creating content that resonates with audiences worldwide,” said Akiyama. “We will actively engage in truly global ‘co-creation’ with our production partners both in Japan and abroad, and together we will strive to generate new needs and value in the global entertainment market. We will continue to take on new challenges every day, aiming to build a strong and sustainable presence.”

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles office will be led by Tom Miyauchi, vice president of Nippon TV International and the man behind the Canadian adaptation of cult favourite Old Enough!. Miyauchi moves to LA in June and kicks off operations in July.

“With the launch of our Los Angeles business hub at the forefront of the global entertainment market, we are here to tap into the pulse of local trends and connect with global audiences with precision and agility. By strengthening collaboration and co-creation with valued partners and creators, our aim is to lead every phase of the content journey – from content development and full-scale production to distribution and international rollout, and the establishment of local production frameworks. In collaboration with Gyokuro Studio, we aim to pioneer new frontiers for globally driven entertainment, proudly originating from Japan.”said Miyauchi.

Nippon TV has been flexing its format muscles globally, with Dragons’ Den/Shark Tank spawning 52 versions across 186 countries and Mother crowned as Asia’s most exported scripted format. Add to that the viral Old Enough! and Netflix-fuelled anime success, and you’ve got a broadcaster not just chasing trends—but setting them.

Now with Studio Ghibli in its corner, Nippon TV is stacking its global arsenal. The new studio and LA office mark a strategic two-punch play, positioning Japan’s content powerhouse to charm the west, one gyokuro-infused idea at a time.

    MUMBAI: Prerparense, chicos. Aqui vamos!

In English that translates into “get ready boys. Here we come!” That’s exactly the mood at Zee Entertainment Enterprises. The entertainment television  network has moved into the Latin American market for the second time with the launch of Zee Mundo. A free advertising supported channel (Fast), it is the second such channel that the Punit Goenka-led company has introduced  in the region – the first being Zee BollyWorld.

  • Xiaomi hires Avow as its agency partner

Xiaomi hires Avow as its agency partner

Mumbai: A leading mobile original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Xiaomi has onboarded Avow, the specialist in mobile OEM user acquisition, as its official core agency for the entire regions of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, South-East Asia, and Latam.

Through this representation, Avow will undertake all media sales activities for Xiaomi’s ad platform (Mi Ads) in the awarded regions and will interact as the main point of contact to manage a 360-degree execution of mobile ad campaigns on the platform—including media inventory buying, campaign set up, result measurement, and campaign optimisation. Brands and agencies looking to leverage the Mi Ads platform will now gain access to exclusive ad formats and reach untapped users from Xiaomi’s diverse user base via Avow’s international teams, who will offer managed campaigns as well as brand awareness activities.

In India, this partnership will be crucial for mobile marketers, app developers, and brands looking to use OEM advertisement placement to reach previously untapped user audiences and make inroads into Xiaomi’s massive user base. In the past, Avow has engaged with leading brands in India like Amazon Prime, Unacademy, UpGrad, Byju’s, MoneyTap, Avail, and WazirX.

Headquartered in Berlin, Germany with one of its regional offices in Bengaluru, India, Avow was twice ranked and recognised in the top 10 in AppsFlyer’s Performance Index XII and XIII, including a dedicated growth section: India, South-East Asia, and India, non-gaming finance.

Mi Ads covers 200+ countries and regions, is supported in 70 languages, and offers reach to 280 million+ quality active users across the world. The platform provides a multi-faceted advertising portal through proprietary apps like Mi Browser, Mi Music, Mi Themes, Mi Video, AppVault, and its official alternative app store, GetApps. Through multiple targeting options, Xiaomi allows marketers to accurately locate target audiences and convert their users into the brand’s customers.

Xiaomi’s media sales expansion strategy is to outsource these activities by selecting strong core partners to represent them in specific regions. This partnership comes at a crucial time, as marketers looking to promote apps are bound to rely upon third-party advertising sources with very little or no guarantee of fraud detection, booming costs, and user engagement. Xiaomi’s OEM advertising placements allow app marketers to achieve incremental user growth from customers who are brand loyal to Xiaomi in these local markets.

“We are stoked to enter this new chapter in our cooperation with Xiaomi. Our long-term partnership is based on trust and shared goals for contributing to the mobile advertising industry. This new challenge will strengthen our alliance, and allow us to offer unique opportunities for mobile marketers to access some of Xiaomi’s most extensive markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, South-East Asia, and Latam,” said Avow CEO & co-founder Ashwin Shekhar.

Avow’s reach and ability to deliver growth results for clients have allowed it to expand its global footprint, opening offices in India, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Brazil, Philippines, and Russia to cater to its large client base in those local markets.

  • LatAm, Asia lead global ad growth

LatAm, Asia lead global ad growth

MUMBAI: Global ad revenues rose just 1.9 per cent to $76.6 billion in the first quarter of 2013 as compared with the year-ago period, according to Nielsen‘s quarterly Global AdView Pulse report, as gains in Latin America and Asia were offset by a reduction in Europe and flat spending in North America.

Latin America showed particularly strong growth of 11.9 per cent in Q1, with increases reported in all countries across the region. In Asia, there was 5.8 per cent growth, led by China, Indonesia and the Philippines, all up by about 20 per cent. There were gains across all Asia markets except for Japan, which reported a 1.1 per cent decrease.

Europe was down by 4.4 per cent, with Nielsen noting it is unlikely there will be any improvements in the short term. North American ad revenues were stable. In the Middle East and Africa, meanwhile, there was a 2.9 per cent improvement. Problems persist for the region though, with Egypt‘s ad revenues dropping 20 per cent in the past year.
