MUMBAI: In a first-of-a-kind agreement, LaLiga and Facebook today announced that the platform will become the official home for all LaLiga Santander matches in the Indian subcontinent.

The three-season deal commences with the 2018/19 campaign kicking off on Aug. 17. All 380 first division matches of Spain’s topflight football league will be available for free to people on Facebook in eight countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

The move marks a new dawn in sports broadcasting, bringing LaLiga and its clubs closer to fans than ever before. The Facebook community in the eight countries will be able to watch LaLiga Santander coverage on a live and on- demand basis via multiple devices. Every match will be available on the official LaLiga Facebook Page as well as individual club Pages.

Fans will be closer to the action than ever before, with the opportunity to watch matches on the go and engage directly with the broadcast. For major matches, viewers in the region will be treated to interactive studio coverage hosted by one of the subcontinent’s faces of football, Joe Morrison.

Analysis will be provided by a pool of experts including former Real Madrid defender and four time LaLiga champion Michel Salgado, as well as former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid midfielder Luis Garcia.

In addition to the live matches, shoulder programming, including a full range of weekly preview shows and highlights, will be offered.

LaLiga features the world’s best players and the world’s best clubs. The league prides itself in being at the forefront of broadcast innovation, delivering many hours of sporting spectacle to millions of viewers every matchday. Now with Facebook, LaLiga has broken new ground, signing its first broadcast agreement ever with a social media platform.

LaLiga President Javier Tebas hailed the agreement: “We are thrilled to team up with Facebook to bring the millions of LaLiga fans in the Indian subcontinent even closer to the action. LaLiga sets the standard for football in the world and we are delighted that more people than ever before will have the opportunity to watch our matches live and for free through Facebook in the region.”

Peter Hutton, Facebook Head of Global Live Sports Programming added “As home to the two most-followed sports clubs on Facebook and some of the world’s most iconic footballers, LaLiga has a huge global presence on our platform. Its popularity is notably visible in the Indian subcontinent, so we’re delighted to be able to serve the community of fans there with free, live LaLiga matches for the next three seasons. We see this as a great opportunity to not only bring people together around world-class football, but also help LaLiga reach new audiences and grow its visibility in a key development market.”

The  2017/18  January  transfer  window  has  drawn  to  a  close,  with  more  than  100 transfers involving players moving to LaLiga Santander and LaLiga 1|2|3 clubs. Many of them were signed off in the final 24 hours of the window, with Sevilla FC, Real Betis, Levante UD and UD Las Palmas keeping the excitement going right down to the wire.

Sevilla have recruited Guilherme Arana, Roque Mesa, Sandro and Miguel Layun, with moves for the latter two sealed and delivered on deadline day, while Real Sociedad have snapped up Layun’s Mexico teammate Hector Moreno. Las Palmas were once again one of the most active dealers, with late arrivals in the shape of Oghenekaro Etebo and Matias Aguirregaray joining fellow January signings Nacho Gil, Gabriel Peñalba, Jairo and Alejandro Galvez in the ranks.

One of the most notable moves on deadline day was Marc Bartra signing for Betis from Borussia Dortmund. Levante also did plenty of late business, bringing in Giampaolo Pazzini, Armando Sadiku and Ruben Rochina before the window closed.

Choco Lozano is now a LaLiga Santander player, having joined Girona FC from FC Barcelona B on deadline day. Another eye-catching signing was Michael Krohn-Dehli’s late switch from Sevilla to RC Deportivo.

Other clubs such as SD Eibar and Malaga CF also took advantage of the January transfer window to strengthen their squads by drafting in players who they hope will help them achieve their goals for the second half of the campaign.

  • LaLiga’s most passionate derby ‘The El Gran Derbi’

LaLiga’s most passionate derby ‘The El Gran Derbi’

MUMBAI: The derby between Real Betis and Sevilla FC is undoubtedly one of LaLiga Santander’s greatest clashes. The rivalry between these two clubs from the city of Seville means that this derby is much more than just a game of football. The Seville derby is not just about the 90 minutes out on the turf. It is a duel that lasts all season. As soon as the fixtures come out in July, the two sets of fans take note of the dates and the city awaits the matchdays as the biggest sporting occasions of the year.

Few matches in the world divide a city the way this derby does. The fourth most populous city in Spain lives and breathes it like no other. The atmosphere does not just permeate the stadium. It is also felt in bars, restaurants, office blocks, out on the street, at schools and universities… because it is a derby for all ages and sexes.

Since the inception of LaLiga Santander, the rivalry between the two sets of fans means that they constantly keep an eye on the ups and downs of the other side in preparation for what, for them, is without doubt the main event of the year: #ElGranDerbi..

It does not matter whether Sevilla’s objective is to achieve a place in the upcoming edition of the Champions League or whether Betis are looking to consolidate their position in LaLiga Santander and scale the table season by season as they seek to regain their status of years gone by. When the Big Derby comes around, the two teams only have one thing on their minds: beating their opponents, making their fans happy and ‘ruling supreme’ in the picturesque city of Seville – at least until the return fixture in the second half of the season.

The fans are preparing for this match like no other during the season. For Seville and its two football clubs, winning the duel on 6 January will be the ideal way to kick off the New Year. The atmosphere inside and outside the stadium is always electric. The long-held and never-ending rivalry between these two teams can be felt out on the pitch and across the entire city. And it will not end with the final whistle. It will last all week, all month, all year. When #ElGranDerbi starts, the city grinds to a halt. Only the game matters. Seville’s more than 700,000 inhabitants treat the match like a cup final. The streets are empty. The lucky ones are watching the action from the stands. The rest are glued to the television. But not a single soul in Seville misses either of the two crunch games that await them each year and which divide a city that lives for #TheBigDerby.
