Piping up for good Seagram’s Travel Gear backs real change makers

MUMBAI: Goodness, it seems, never goes out of style and now it comes with luggage tags. Seagram’s 100 Pipers Travel Gear, best known for championing causes bigger than commerce, has unveiled its latest campaign spotlighting real-life champions of change who live the brand’s philosophy of Be Remembered for Good.

The new film features an eclectic cast of changemakers: actor and Climate Warrior Bhumi Pednekar, actor and philanthropist Kunal Kapoor, lake conservationist Anand Malligavad, and eco-conscious entrepreneur Taran Chhabra, co-founder of Neeman’s. Together, they lend star power and substance to a campaign that urges society to put purpose before vanity.

The film captures their journeys from film sets and boardrooms to lakesides and sustainable workshops proving that small acts, when scaled, ripple into movements.

Pednekar, a vocal advocate for climate awareness, has channelled her celebrity into supporting NGOs, funding climate-related podcasts and documentaries, and hosting sustainability events. “I believe in doing things not just for a good life but for the greater good of our world,” she said, describing her partnership with 100 Pipers as a natural extension of her Climate Warrior role.

Ketto.com co-founder Kunal Kapoor who founded India’s largest crowdfunding platform framed his story through responsibility: “With great power comes great responsibility. I’ve championed a platform that ignites compassion, transforming small deeds into profound impacts.”

Malligavad, once a techie and now India’s most recognised lake revivalist, has restored Bengaluru’s water bodies since 2017, inspiring similar efforts nationwide. “My commitment to lake revival is equalled by my passion to inspire others to join this vital cause,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chhabra has reimagined footwear with Neeman’s, creating sustainable shoes that turn plastic into purposeful steps. “In my efforts to blend success with a cause, I have transformed plastic into steps towards a better world,” he remarked, echoing the brand’s ethos.

Launched under the Be Remembered for Good banner, the campaign is more than a glossy commercial. It is a clarion call to action, urging consumers to celebrate those who create ripples of change and to pick up the baton themselves.

By putting real changemakers centre stage, Seagram’s 100 Pipers Travel Gear has chosen to showcase that heroism doesn’t just belong to fictional characters, it thrives in citizens who fight for clean water, climate justice, sustainable fashion, and compassion at scale.

Because when it comes to leaving a legacy, this brand is reminding everyone: travel light, but carry goodness.

In India, Animal Planet is launching a campaign ‘Be Kind to All Kind’ in its endeavor to raise support for select NGOS dedicated to the welfare of stray animals. The channel has roped in celebrities Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Kapoor to create awareness about this sensitive issue.

“The situation of stray animals in India is a matter of concern, and we will all have to come together to help these lovely beings. I have personally met many people who would like to support stray animals but can’t because they don’t know how to. The campaign ‘Be Kind to All Kind’ aims to reach out to people, and provide access so that they can support the cause they believe in,” said, Soha Ali Khan. “Animals are surprisingly human in the way they emote, they express. Infact, I don’t pamper my dogs (3 pets), they pamper me with unending selfless love. I enjoy each moment that I spend with them. It is amazing how much satisfaction one can gain by just being ‘natural’ with the most adorable creatures God has created.”

Kunal Kapoor, added, “It is our responsibility to stand up for all living beings especially animals. We can’t just look the other way when the situation demands help…infact we need to take a decisive action. There are NGOs who work towards the rescue and rehabilitation of needy animals who run shelters, ambulance services, sterilization programs, treatment camps and disaster rescue missions. If we cannot personally go and help these animals then least we can do is support the NGOs dedicated to animal welfare. I hope more and more people joins hands contribute to this genuine cause, and help make India a better place to live for all animals.”

As a part of Be Kind to All Kind campaign, Animal Planet will urge people to directly support NGOs including ‘World For All’ to raise funds to run their monthly rescue and treatment programme and fostering first aid to the needy strays, ‘The Feline Foundation’ to help control the population of stray cats and dogs in Mumbai and ‘Wild Life Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre’ to help them feed and care for 5 elephants rescued from a life in chains. • RaagDesh……..Purposeless

RaagDesh has been backed by RajyaSabha Television which, in itself, is quite curious! What is the Upper House of the Parliament, which is not even elected by direct public voting and the TV channel devoted to the august house, getting into any sort of a commercial activity, obviously, financed by the tax payers’ money? Unless, of course, the credit given to the RajyaSabha TV is for some other reasons.

In the last many decades, a much selected history of India and her freedom struggle has not been available into public domain. Even when it comes to the educational institutions, the exposure has been kept limited to a select few.

The files and suspense over the sudden vanishing of the great freedom fighter, Subhash Chandra Bose, a Congress leader, who parted ways with the Congress and who, during the World War II, raised and led the Indian National Army (INA), joined forces with the Japanese army to fight the British occupying Hindustan to free her from their clutches.

One thought the Government owned TV channel got involved itself in this film project to bring to the people the glory of Bose and his endeavours towards freeing India from the slavery of British. Sadly, in the process, Indians belonging to the British army and the INA ended up killing each other; an Indian killing another Indian! However, there is little or nothing about Bose except passing references and a few visuals.

The film is about the British Indian army men of the Indian origin who, when they were losing ground to the Japanese at Burma (Myanmar), were compromised by the British and, when they surrendered, they were handed over to the soldiers of the Japanese Imperial army.

What follows is the story of three British army Indian officers from those handed over to the Japanese who, when freed, joined the INA. The three being Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh and MohitMarwah, portraying a Sikh, a Muslim and a Punjabi Hindu thus, according to the makers, representing all of India. The South is represented by MrudulaMurali, who plays the army doctor in INA as LaxmiSehgal.

The three officers are charged with the murder of some British army men and tried by an army court. The film also reminds one of the prominent Mumbai based Congressman and an eminent lawyer, Bhulabhai Desai (after who the upscale South Mumbai road, earlier known as Warden Road, has been named.) who decides to fight the case of these three soldiers.

As the trial begins of the three officers, it goes into the flashback of war encounters the three faced. The circumstances of their capture and accusations.

RaagDesh is a shoddy, pretentious film which even fails to establish the background and the credentials of its three protagonist. Symbolism (soldiers from three communities), unconvincing romance between Marwah and Mrudula, confusing war scenes where you don’t know who is on which side and who is killing who. The court scenes are stagey and grab most footage. And, the British court martial officers or whatever are caricatures. The language in the film is Punjabi and English just because the main protagonist is Punjabi!

The three men, Kunal Kapoor, MohitMarwah, Amit Sadh as well as MrudulaMurali look sincere to no avail.

RaagDesh fails to invoke any sort of emotions, let alone patriotism.

    Producers: Gurdeep Singh Sappal.

    Director: Tigmanshu Dhulia.

Cast: Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh, MohitMarwah, MrudulaMurali, Kenny Desai, Zakir Husain, Kanwaljit Singh, Kenny DeoriBasumatary.

  • Dear Zindagi…….Tests your patience!

    Dear Zindagi…….Tests your patience!

Director Gauri Shinde made her mark in 2012 with a simple film with a universal appeal, English Vinglish, about a housewife who felt distanced from her husband and two children because she could not communicate in English. With an interesting and novel concept and a seasoned performance by Sridevi, the film met with a lot of appreciation and reasonable commercial success establishing the director as a promising filmmaker.

Dear Zindagi is Shinde’s second go as a writer-director. She had the added advantage of an all-stars cast with Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt along with Kunal Kapoor, Angad Bedi, Ali Zafar and Ira Dubey. With this, exhibitors saw a ray of hope for their empty cinema halls.

It is designed to be a contemporary tale about career-oriented independent girls, Alia, Ira and Yashswini Dayama. Alia is working with film unit and is just making a name for herself as an accomplished cinematographer. While she has made independent ad films and fills in for chief cinematographer’s absence. However, she craves for a big break.

Off work, all three live life to the fullest. While Ira is married and happy, Alia has a problem settling down with one guy. She has an ex, current and a future boyfriend all lined up. She has her own justifications for her actions and she is casual about sleeping with Kunal Kapoor while going steady with Bedi and also telling him about it matter-of-factly.

The film seemed to be all about adventurous young women charting their careers and taking life as it comes. But, that is not it. This film is about a working girl’s complexes borne out of her childhood and her perceived deception by her own parents. All this young women pubbing, dancing, taking to guys (in the case of Alia) and discarding them has little relevance to the main theme of the film, yet it lasts for over an hour into the film until Shah Rukh Khan and Alia’s problems are finally introduced.

Alia is out on a shoot at a hotel in Goa where she overhears speakers at a conference talking on psychiatry. She finds it boring till she hears the voice of Shah Rukh Khan, also a psychiatrist. She realizes she needs a psychiatric help; DD or Deemag Ka Doctor, as she refers to the creed.

Shah Rukh is a shrink unlike any other. Even at the conference, he is casually dressed while rest of his creed dons three-piece suits. Alia is now his new patient. A bit of first half of the film and almost all of the second half consists of the conversation between Alia and Shah Rukh. She mumbles her problems and Shah Rukh sort of defines them. The viewer is left out totally. As is her wont, by this time, Alia is head over heels in love with Shah Rukh; the psychiatrist in Shah Rukh does not seem to have worked on her!

Okay, so her sessions with Shah Rukh have made her come to terms with her parents; not that her reasons to rebel had justification in the first place.

Dear Zindagi is one never-ending saga of an insecure girl, Alia. While the first one hour and some minutes stress the need for her to find a shrink, the second half is about her and the shrink, Shah Rukh. This accounts for the 2 hours 30 minutes of the film running time.

The film is based on a feeble theme; psychiatry is not yet a well-known Indian concept. Here, the best healers are still the temples, soothsayers and festivals. Even the way the doctor-patient session is handled is copybook West, with nothing Indian about it.

The director loses control over her film in the face of an uncertain script, leading to a boring and monotonous outcome. With economy in mind, the film moves only between a studio in Mumbai for a couple of shots to a bungalow location in Goa. The same is the case when it comes to spending on props and costumes.

The smart one-liners, which add some spice to the initial parts of the film, soon dry out. Editing is poor and songs lack appeal.

Performance-wise, the film depends mostly on Alia; she starts off well but in this marathon film, she tends to get repetitive after a while as a pout here and there and making faces can go only so far. Shah Rukh, as a psychiatrist who is not supposed to look like a psychiatrist, with his own broken family and an attitude, tries to underplay to limited effect. Ira Dubey and Yashaswini Dayam both impress. Boys on the roaster have little to do.

Dear Zindagi is a pretentious film, at the end of which a viewer is bound to feel the need for some consultations and remedy. With a limited screen release and avoiding single screens as far as possible, the film should get a fair opening but, the box office prospects will taper down after the initial compulsive moviegoer is done with it.

    Producers: Karan Johar, Gauri Shinde.

    Director: Gauri Shinde.

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Gauri Shinde, Kunal Kapoor, Angad Bedi, Ira Dubey, Yashswini Dayama, Ali Zafar.

    Moh Maya Money….predictable

As the title explains, Moh Maya Money is about lure of money. A middleclass dream but not easy to attain and, hence, leading to a quick-fix moneymaking idea ending in a scam.

Ranvir Shorey’s character, working for a real estate broker in Delhi, dreams big and has a devious mind to give shape to his dreams. His job at a real estate firms pays him a pittance besides what he can make from skimming from deals. But he watches big monies change hands all the time. His wife, Neha Dhupia, a news channel producer, does not support with him but he decides to carry out the scam anyway.

Ranvir borrows from toughies and buys a plot but the deal backfires. The goons are after him to recover their money and Ranvir has no place to escape. Though unwilling, Neha also gets involved in the mess.

Ranvir now devises a plan to dodge his debtors but he needs Neha to cooperate. Neha also has her own secrets and a motive to help Ranvir.

The film shows the murkier side of the real estate business in Delhi which, actually, is the same all over. The film has an interesting idea and an enjoyable first half. But, as it proceeds into the second part, it loses grip as it trudges towards a predictable end.

Ranvir as a typical smooth-talker is thoroughly convincing. Neha Dhupia gives a good account of herself. The direction is good in parts. The film has no scope for songs and dance and have been skirted. Moh Maya Money has no box office prospects.

    Producer/ Director: Munish Bhardwaj.

    Cast: Ranvir Shorey, Neha Dhupia.
