Uncertainty over KKR’s participation in IPL 2015

MUMBAI: Indian Premier League (IPL) defending champions and the Shah Rukh Khan owned franchise Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) participation in IPL 2015 is as yet uncertain.

KKR has made its stand clear that if Sunil Narine, who is the trump card when it comes to their bowling attack, is restricted to bowl, the team will opt out of the cricketing extravaganza.

It all started during the Champions League T20, where Narine was banned following a suspect bowling action. The spinner then went to the nets and rectified his action, which met the criteria. International Cricket Council (ICC) has cleared Narine’s action and allowed him to bowl in the Cricket World 2015. However, the West Indian voluntarily opted out of the World Cup as he was not prepared to bowl at a competitive level in his new action.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on the other hand refused to surrender to the threats of KKR and asked them to get Narine’s bowling action tested at Sri Ramachandra Medical College in Chennai. As per media reports, BCCI president Jagmohan Dalimiya said, “I have had a word with them (KKR). He will have to appear for the test again, does not matter once or twice.”

Soon after Dalmiya’s words KKR arranged the bowler’s travel to Chennai. Narine reached Chennai on the morning of 2 April, 2015 and went through the tests in the presence of a top KKR official and other experts before leaving for Kolkata in the evening.

“We can only say that he has undergone the tests. We cannot give any further details,” a The Times of India report quoted a KKR official as saying.

The official broadcaster of IPL, Multi Screen Media (MSM) has already sold its ad inventory and is preparing aggressively for the eighth edition of the tournament. When asked about the impact of the KKR – BCCI spar, MSM president Rohit Gupta told Indiantelevision.com, “It is something between BCCI and KKR, and whatever happens will be decided by both of them.”

If BCCI restricts Narine and KKR opts out of IPL, it will affect the ratings of the tournament and advertisers reach will be curtailed by 14 matches, which KKR is supposed to play against all other franchises.

Gupta brings with him 12 years of content and media experience having worked until recently as a cricket producer with Star Sports as well as media houses like India Today and Times Now.

KKR CEO Venky Mysore said, “With a view to focusing on building the KKR brand and deepening our engagement with our fans, we are investing more in content development under Achint’s leadership.”

  • IPL Auction: 67 players sold, Yuvraj again tops the list with Rs 16 crore

IPL Auction: 67 players sold, Yuvraj again tops the list with Rs 16 crore

MUMBAI: Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has become the most expensive cricketer in the IPL 8 players’ auction, which was held on 16 February in Bengaluru. Delhi Daredevils bought the cricketer for a record Rs 16 crore.

Dinesh Kartik was second in the list of most costliest player as Royal Challengers Bangalore paid Rs 10.5 crore for the wicket keeper batsman. If the amount paid for the India discards is shocking, the unsold list emerged as one of the idiosyncratic in the history of tournament. Hasim Amla, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene failed to find a bidder. Both Sangakkara and Amla are in top 10 rankings of ODI and Tests.

Indian World Cup winner speed star Zaheer Khan, who failed to come in the bidders list in the first round was purchased by Delhi Daredevils for Rs 4 crore in the later half.

Multi Screen Media’s (MSM) sports broadcaster Sony Six aired the Indian Premiere League (IPL) 2015 auctions live. The auction was also streamed live by the tournaments official website iplt20.com.

KOLKATA: Bollywood superstar and Indian Premiere League’s (IPL) Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise owner Shah Rukh Khan is likely to feature in the forthcoming new tourism television campaign for West Bengal. It is learnt that the new TVC will be ready in three months.

The state government has given the brand-building exercise to Ogilvy & Mather. Additionally, a global consultant – HVS – has also been hired to help prepare a ‘Vision Document’ for the state.

Fairly large contingents from the UK, Australia, Thailand and Sri Lanka will gather at the CII-organised Destination East, the largest buyer-seller tourism meet billed for 6-7 February at Town Hall, Kolkata’s heritage showpiece. More than 25 countries are likely to participate in Destination East.

These four countries are among a total of 25, including the US, China, France Germany, Singapore, Switzerland, Sweden, Japan and Bangladesh from which tourism stakeholders will interact with their counterparts in the eastern region.

“This is a forum where we wish to share with the global delegates our incentive schemes for any investor keen to put money in tourism projects in the State,” said state’s Principal Secretary of the tourism department AR Bardhan.

“We will offer cash-based incentives on projects,” said Bardhan.

“We are going on a major brand-building exercise. O&M, has been hired to do the job. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is likely to feature in the forthcoming new tourism television campaign for West Bengal,” he said, adding that the new TVC will be ready in three months.

He also disclosed that the state government will build motel-cum-wayside facilities every 30 km along the routes to major tourism destinations, including the Sunderbans and Digha. “This will be a reality in six months’ time. A global consultant called HVS has been hired to help prepare a comprehensive Vision Document for West Bengal,” he said.

HVS has provided consulting services and solutions to more than 60 countries for hotels, shared ownership and leisure assets.

“The 10-year Vision Document seeks to double the growth of five per cent in inward tourist flow from both domestic market and international countries,” he added.

“Efforts are on to showcase Kolkata as the ‘Cultural Capital’ and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conference and Exhibition) destination. One of our objectives is also to enable one to drive to Sunderbans within two hours from Kolkata at a speed of 80 kmph,” he added.

Apeejay Surendra Park Hotels Ltd managing director Vijay Dewan added, “Considerable money and energy is being devoted to improving roads.”

Dewan also narrated how Destination East has evolved into a powerful platform in the past five years for domestic tourism stakeholders to promote West Bengal to the international travel fraternity. This initiative has been generating a fair amount of business over the past few years.

IPL teams keep their ‘core’ intact

MUMBAI: A total of 123 cricketers including players were retained by the franchises for the 2015 Pepsi Indian Premier season. Five Indian cricketers including Unmukt Chand and Vinay Kumar have been traded during the window for player trade this year.

  • Jacques Kallis set to take up new role with Kolkata Knight Riders

Jacques Kallis set to take up new role with Kolkata Knight Riders

MUMBAI: Indian Premier League (IPL) 2012 and 2014 champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), have announced that cricketer Jacques Kallis, has decided to continue his association with the franchise, this time in a different role. He will now be seen as a mentor and batting consultant. Kallis has been with the team for close to four years, from 2011 to 2014 and played a big role in the franchise’s success as well as at the Champions League T2O this year.

Commenting on this development, KKR MD and CEO Venky Mysore said, “We are honoured to start a long-term relationship with Jacques in a different role as mentor and batting consultant and benefit from everything he brings to KKR. Jacques’s commitment to KKR has been brilliant and his contribution both on the filed and in the dressing room has been superb.”

Kallis said, “KKR has been my Indian family for the last four years. Over the past year I have had a chance to think about my future and when KKR approached me with this long-term offer, I jumped at it. KKR is a great brand and am really looking forward to assisting them in my new role as mentor and batting consultant.”

Kallis further added, “I had signed a two year contract with Sydney Thunder for 2014 and 2015 and have also committed to playing in The Caribbean Premier League next year.  These commitments were made prior to concluding my new role with KKR.”

  • Unmukt and Vinay Kumar to play for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2015

Unmukt and Vinay Kumar to play for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2015

MUMBAI: While the country is currently engulfed with football fever with the ongoing Hero Indian Super League, cricket fans are in for some good news. The league that started it all, Pepsi Indian Premier League, in its eighth season, is set to kick off on 8 April 2015, and conclude on 24 May 2015.

The first trading window for the tournament opened on 6 October 2014. So far two players have been traded; Mumbai Indians have acquired Unmukt Chand from Rajasthan Royals and R Vinay Kumar from Kolkata Knight Riders, respectively.

Chand had led the India Under-19 cricket team to the U-19 Cricket World Cup victory in 2012. During the IPL season seven he was bought for Rs 65 lakhs by Rajasthan Royals. Vinay Kumar was picked up by KKR for Rs 2.8 crore.

Mumbai Indians have also released Michael Hussey and Praveen Kumar (Pepsi IPL 2014 replacement player), both of whom may enter the Pepsi IPL 2015 Player Auction.

The first trading window will close on  12 December 2014.

Meanwhile, BCCI hon. secretary Sanjay Patel said that the IPL governing council has also decided the windows for the 2016 and 2017 seasons of the tournament. Further mentioning the dates, he said, “The Pepsi IPL 2016 will be played in the window between 8 April 2016 and 29 May 2016 while IPL 2017 will be played from 5 April 2017 to 21 May 2017.”

The previous seventh season was won by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

  • SAP Analytics drives KKR to lift Pepsi IPL 2014 trophy

SAP Analytics drives KKR to lift Pepsi IPL 2014 trophy

KOLKATA:  The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) claimed the seventh edition of the Pepsi Indian Premier League (IPL) monetising SAP Technology, said SAP Labs India.

SAP HANA based platforms – SAP Auction Analytics, SAP Game Analytics and SAP Lumira enabled KKR to evaluate players during the auction, derive post-game analytics following each of the team’s games, and drive fan engagement respectively, during the Pepsi IPL 2014, it is learnt.

During this year’s auction, KKR sought to gain a competitive advantage over other teams by picking the right players at the right price. To objectivize their selections, they applied SAP Auction Analytics. Developed using the principles of Design Thinking, SAP Auction Analytics leveraged the predictive analytics capabilities of SAP HANA through a live dashboard that enabled KKR to derive intelligence on players featured in the auction. With the help of SAP Auction Analytics, KKR put together the winning team of 19 players.

“With SAP’s solutions, we gained a multi-dimensional analysis of every player and were able to devise a playing 11 that had the maximum chance of winning the tournament. During the game too, SAP’s solutions helped us strategize better and provide a great experience to our fans,” said KKR CEO and MD Venky Mysore, adding “Partnering with SAP was lucky for us.”

A data visualisation software, SAP Lumira, provided fans with statistics to learn more about how KKR performed over the course of the 16-match campaign during the Pepsi IPL 2014.

“The business of sports and entertainment is at an inflection point with new technologies driving significant changes to the business and creating vast amounts of qualitative and quantitative data,” concluded said SAP Labs India MD Anirban Dey.

  • KKR and e-commerce sites win IPL 7

KKR and e-commerce sites win IPL 7

MUMBAI: As fans chanted Korbo Lorbo Jitbo (We will do, we will fight, we will win ), Manish Pandey’s 94 off 50 balls not only ensured Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) putting up a brave fight, it saw them seize the IPL cup from Kings XI Punjab in a nail-biting finish.

However, this IPL not only brought smiles to the Knight Riders but also to broadcasters Multi Screen Media-owned Sony Max and Sony Six that aired the tournament.

Before the seventh edition started, naysayers said not many advertisers would be interested in the property since India was going through the mother of all elections. To make things worse, the first phase of IPL was held outside India. And when Sony Entertainment Television president Rohit Gupta said that the broadcaster would charge Rs 4.9-5 lakh for a 10-second slot, a 20 per cent jump from last year’s Rs 4.25 lakh, eyebrows were raised.

However, the story went in the other direction. Despite the T20 tourney being played in the UAE and the ninth phase of the polls coinciding with the matches back home, the popularity of the tournament wasn’t affected and the broadcaster charged as much as Rs18-20 lakh for a 10 seconder for the final match. “Last year, we had charged around Rs 15 lakh for the final match. So, the ad revenue has only gone up. One must understand that IPL is a mature property and shouldn’t talk about not attracting advertisers,” says Gupta.

He went on to say, “Take a look at the English Premier League (EPL); it has been on for more than 20 years and it still attracts audiences and advertisers. Wonder why in India, people don’t understand that IPL is a yearly phenomenon and is here to stay for a long period.”

The television viewership too went up by five per cent for the first 54 matches, from 175 million during IPL-6 to 184 million this year.

“There is no risk to any advertiser,” said Gupta, while highlighting the fact that a big chunk of broadcasters’ revenues would be contributed by e-commerce companies.

Apart from the big advertisers – Vodafone, Karbonn, Havells, Perfetti and Marico – this year saw many e-commerce companies, especially Amazon, which launched its first TVC during IPL and others like Flipkart, Myntra, Quikr and Snapdeal piggybacked on the tournament.

Says GroupM ESP national director – Entertainment, Sports & Live Events Vinit Karnik, “A lot of e-commerce sites associated themselves with various teams. Also, there were a lot of on ground and on air activations so it won’t be wrong to say that this time one product category did leverage the league.”

The reason behind the phenomenon is the intense competition in the online retail segment. And as every player tries to pitch something different be it in terms of product line or delivery model, the mass media property – IPL – becomes the perfect battle ground.

“The IPL has got the reach and so it has delivered eyeballs to the brands. And the result has been achieved. With sites fighting tooth and nail what will be a better platform than IPL to reach out to as many as people?” says MEC national planning director Zubin Tatna.

Havas Media India MD Mohit Joshi agrees on the fact that with booming online retail sector competition is only going to increase. “IPL as a format doesn’t let one innovate much but the brands always get what they want from it, if used appropriately.”

“E commerce sites did dominate the advertisements this time as well as offline enough buzz was created. So, one shouldn’t be surprised if around 40 per cent of the revenue comes from this category,” he adds.

However, Tatna feels otherwise. “You see a Quikr or an OLX ad on television anyhow so I wouldn’t agree with the fact e-commerce sites dominated only IPL.”

    The nerve-wrenching battle

The tourney’s star cricketer this year, Glen Maxwell, along with his Punjab teammates David Miller, Virendar Sehwag and George Bailey managed to score a paltry nine runs between the four in an edge-of-the-seat finale. For KKR, it’s been smooth sailing with the final being their ninth win a row. This puts them in the league of Chennai Super Kings (whom they had defeated in the final two years ago) as multiple IPL winners.

However, to their credit, Punjab were neck and neck with KKR so much so it could have been anyone’s match till the very end. Wriddihan Saha’s innings was a fitting precursor to the well fought finish.

Apart from Maxwell’s disappointing performance, this season’s highest run scorer Robin Utthappa too did not match expectations as Piyush Chawla was left to win the game for KKR. But Utthappa did win the Orange Cap. Man of the match Pandey said that winning the IPL was like the “icing on the cake” after winning the Ranji trophy, Irani trophy and Vijay Hazare trophy.

KKR captain Gautam Gambhir said they never thought they would win this IPL. He also went on to add that winning at the Chinnaswamy Stadium was what the team fancied, considering the fact that it is a small ground. Incidentally, the stadium also hosted the very first IPL game in 2008. Gambhir told indiatoday.in, “This is a ground where it is very difficult to defend. We wanted to get it down to five overs, 50 or 60 to get. Manish played a fantastic innings.” Finally, Punjab’s late strikes could not dither KKR from taking the trophy home a second time with 200 runs.

As for KKR, Kolkata Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated the team on Facebook. A post she put up on the social networking site said: “Congratulations…. KKR….Congratulations…Sharukh.” She also congratulated Saha for his “brilliant performance.”

In 2012, the Banerjee government had come under sharp criticism for showering expensive gold chains and gold medals as part of the grand felicitation programme held in honour of KKR’s IPL win. But this time around, as Eden Gardens prepares for another such programme, it will be interesting to see what ‘Didi’ has to offer the boys in purple.
