    WOW Skin Science appoints Kiran Kumar as VP, supply chain

    Mumbai: FMCG personal care brand WOW Skin Science on Monday announced the appointment of Kiran Kumar as vice president of the supply chain.

    Kumar will play a pivotal role in managing the end-to-end supply chain of Body Cupid Pvt Ltd. His responsibilities will also include production and distribution planning, warehousing, logistics, and procurement.

    In his career spanning 18 years, Kumar has worked as senior instock manager at Cloudtail, an Amazon joint venture. He has also lent his expertise as manager- supply chain at Marico where he handled various roles across manufacturing, procurement, distribution planning, new product development, project management, modern trade, and e-commerce supply chain management.

    MUMBAI: The Indian space agency ISRO, in a move to set a world record, is planning to put into orbit 83 satellites — two Indian and 81 foreign — on a single rocket in early 2017, said a top official of Antrix Corporation, the commercial arm of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

    The official said the company’s order book stands at Rs 500 crore while negotiations are on for launch order for another Rs 500 crore.

    Antrix Corporation chairman-cum-managing director Rakesh Sasibhushan told IANS that, during the first quarter of 2017, ISRO planned plan to launch a single rocket carrying 83 satellites. Most foreign satellites were nano satellites, he said.

    He said all the 83 satellites will be put in a single orbit and hence there will not be any switching off and on of the rocket. The major challenge for the proposed mission is to hold the rocket in the same orbit till all the satellites are ejected. He said ISRO will use its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle XL (PSLV-XL) rocket variant for the record launch.

    For ISRO, launch of multiple satellites at one go is not a new thing as it has done it several times in the past. According to Sasibhushan, the total payload/weight carried off into space by the PSLV-XL rocket will be around 1,600 kg.

    Meanwhile, ISRO is conducting high-altitude tests with its own cryogenic engine that is expected to power the heavier rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mk III (GSLV Mk III). The GSLV Mk III has a capacity to carry around four tonnes of load. The rocket is scheduled to be flown in January 2017.

    The GSLV Mk III rocket is expected to save precious foreign exchange for India as it pays to launch heavier satellites through foreign space agencies.

    ISRO chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar said the agency is looking forward to develop four-tonne communication satellites that will give the same output as a six-tonner.

  • ‘Brothers’: Messed up

    ‘Brothers’: Messed up

    MUMBAI: Brothers was expected to be next best thing to happen after Bajrangi Bhaijaan, at least for the exhibition trade. Coming as it does from Dharma Productions and director Karan Malhotra, who made his debut with the Agneepath remake in 2012.

    While Agneepath was a remake of director Mukul Anand’s Amitabh Bachchan 1990 starrer of same name, Brothers, Malhotra’s new film, has been adapted from the Hollywood film, Warrior (2011).

    It follows the story of two estranged brothers practising a no-holds-barred body combat sport, which is said to have its roots in ancient Greece and has, since then, travelled through various countries through eras in various forms and finally named as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). 

    While, Malhotra tried and made his version of Agneepath more contemporary, here he has tried to make Brothers more Indian in that trying to add desi emotions. In the process he ends up making it dated instead. 

    Jackie Shroff is due to leave jail after serving his time and when his possessions are returned to him, the only thing he is looking for is the picture of his wife, Shefali Shah, for whose killing he served the sentence in jail. As he comes out, his son, Sidharth Malhotra, is there to receive him. As Jackie enters his home, he goes hyper, remembering his loving wife, the way she liked her furniture and the way she liked to set her comfort chair where she could read.

    You would think that Jackie loved his wife immensely and cared for the family. As it turns out in the flashbacks, Jackie was a drunkard, a wife beater, who was disloyal to her. What’s more, he also brings home the son from his other woman to Shefali. The boy grows up to be Sidharth. This multifaceted characterisation of Jackie is the first hint at the things that will follow. In an attempt to give the film Indian emotions, things have been messed up. 

    Jackie is an ex MMA trainer and to coincide with his release, MMA has been legalised in the country! Kiran Kumar, an ex-pro at this sport, has returned to India from the US to promote it and organise a world champions contest. The contest often proves fatal for the loser but certain rules have been formed to make it safe, which are not exactly evident in practise. 

    But, there is huge money in this contest of Kiran Kumar and Sidharth want to be a part of it. Jackie takes it upon himself to train Sidharth. It is time for Akshay to make his presence felt. Akshay is the elder and legitimate son who has made his own life and hates Jackie for killing his mother. He is a school teacher, sports tattoos all over, is married to Jacqueline Fernandez and has a six year old daughter.

    Akshay’s daughter suffers from an ailment as both her kidneys are weak since birth and she needs urgent attention. To make some side money, Akshay fights in underground MMA for which the school principal reprimands him and later sacks him. His lender refuses to renew his loan and Akshay decides to do the next best thing he knows, go for MMA for the money needed for his daughter. For him, Kiran has come just in time and the ‘TV media’ has gone gaga over him and his contest.

    The MMA contest is announced with a huge press conference and a few WWF-reject kind of champions from various countries are introduced with high decibel music in the background, which distracts instead of adding to the effect of the scene. Also on the menu are Akshay and Sidharth, the brothers. 

    Sidharth sails through with ease in his initial rounds felling some of the ‘reputed’ fighters in one or two knocks. Akshay has to struggle but, being a hero, manages to win them. It is time for the finals and the opponents are the two brothers putting Jackie in a great dilemma. Somehow, here Akshay proves to be superior to Sidharth because a hero can’t lose. He even manages to break Sidharth’s arm. That is when the director recalls some flashbacks of the brothers’ past, the growing up years and how they cared for and loved each other. And, while pretending to be still fighting, both call for a truce, swearing on their growing up love!

    The film has a poor script full of contradictions with its unnecessary and unsuccessful attempt to make it Indian. Direction is patchy with no clue where it is heading. There is no help coming from music or dialogue or romance. The kind of fights the film depends on have been part of innumerable films in Hindi cinema as a passing sequence since 1970s, and here it is the main theme. Editing is missing. 

    The film stars mostly non-performers and among them, Jackie excels, Akshay remains his usual self and Sidharth packs his acting and performance in one perpetually sinister look. Jacqueline is fairly good in an insignificant role. Rest are caricatures. 

    The theme of Brothers will find little identification with the audience and looks fated to go down unsung. The opening is poor and so are reports.

    Gour Hari Dastaan’: The forgettable freedom file

    Gour Hari Dastaan is a story that starts in pre-independence days sometime in 1945 and traverses a period of over 60 years. It is a bio-film about a young freedom fighter, who spends most of his life to get his due. He wants his sacrifice and honour to be recognised. 

    There have been bio-films on freedom movement of leaders like MK Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Ambedkar, Savarkar and so on. These films were about their big struggles against British rule. Compared to these great names, Gour Hari’s crusade is the opposite: it is totally personal. It is not that he is doing it for pension. He just wants to be certified by the powers that be, as is done by awarding a Tamra Patra (copper plaque usually given to a freedom fighter) by the government along with lifelong pension and other benefits to freedom fighter and his family. 

    Gour Hari is a young lad (older one, the crusader, played by Vinay Pathak) yet to knock on his teens but the fire of the freedom struggle has been ignited within him. His desire is to see the Indian tricolour fly high. But this is not allowed since the British rule India and the official flag according to them is the Union Jack. India is not yet free but for some reason, Gour is trying to plant a Congress tricolour with a charkha in the centre atop some single storey structure in his town when a British officer tries to stop him but dies accidentally in the attempt. Nothing points back to Gour or his village; the story never refers to it again. The incident was just supposed to tell you how devoted Gour was to his cause of freeing his country.

    After a brief flashback into Gour’s past to establish that he was a freedom fighter, you now see Gour running from pillar to post to get himself identified and get enrolled into the list of freedom fighters. He visits government departments dealing more regularly with them than he signs his own office muster at the Handicraft Board where he is employed. For everybody from his office folk to the neighbourhood, he has become a butt of joke and teased as freedom fighter. But, he also finds a sympathisers in two tabloid journalists, Ranvir Shorey and Tanishtha Chetterjee, who take up his cause against the wishes of their editor, who thinks only stories on gay movement and Section 377 merit coverage. 

    Pathak is not willing to compromise or use any short cuts. But, ironically, when he does get his due, it is through an influential high profile lawyer, Rajit Kapoor, who has influence up to and including the Chief Minister, Vikram Gokhale, and is feared enough to threaten him with legal action. 

    Sadly, it is Pathak’s reach to the powers that brings him justice at the end of 32 years of struggle and not his crusade! The politicians, wary of the media where Pathak is making prime time, make a compromise, and agree to certify him with a Paper Patra instead of a Tamra Part on the contention that they don’t have budget for Tamra. 

    Gour Hari Dastaan is an alien story for the national audience. Like the recent Marathi film,Court, which won the National Award, this film could have served a better purpose in a regional language. 

    The film is about performances and, on that count, Pathak leads the pack. It is his story, after all. Ranvir, Tanishtha and Konkona Sen Sharma (as Pathak’s wife) match him step by step. The film has a horde of cameos by Saurabh Shukla, Gokhale, Rajit, Saurabh Shukla, Vipin Sharma, Asrani etc. 

    As for the script, while Pathak’s crusade is what most of the film is about, there is not enough footage of his fighting for freedom to make up for his 32 years of chasing authorities. What he did and why he merits his copper plaque find little justification in the film since he is one of the mob protesting and jailed for 90 days but never tried in a court of law. 

    The reason why he has to run from pillar to post is because there is no record of him being tried and jailed so he could qualify as a freedom fighter and the benefits, which ensued from it. 

    Direction is on predictable lines and suffers because too much time is taken on telling this insipid story. Musical score is good. Editing is overshadowed by the director’s vision. Dialogue is positive and, often, peppered with wit and cutting edge. 

    Gour Hari Dastaan has no domestic box office value and will make merry only on the festival circuit.

    ‘Bobby Jasoos’…open and shut case

    MUMBAI: Bobby Jasoos is a curious mix of a light film, a romantic film, and a Muslim family social drama while also packing in a bit of suspense.

    Vidya Balan belongs to a traditional Muslim family from Hyderabad but her interests are not very traditional. She wants to become a private detective. When she seeks a job at an established detective agency, she is turned down. She then decides to start her own agency right opposite this agency. Her assignments are from fellow Muslim men and women from her neighbourhood, a dense Muslim locality.

     One of her clients is Ali Fazal; every time his family wants him to get married and choose a girl for him, he asks Vidya, Bobby Jasoos, to find some negative thing about the girl and to convey that to his parents so the marriage is put off. However, these are petty assignments earning her in the low thousands. What is more, she has to use the tea stall of a friend, Akash Dahiya, for her meetings with clients and has to order tea so that he gets some business for letting her use his joint. Her other sidekick is Prasad Barve, who runs a cyber cafe in the area.

    But Vidya has a problem at home. While her mother, Supriya Pathak Kapur, loves her like any mother would love her ward, her father is upset about her way of life and refuses even to talk to her. That is the family drama part of the film.

    While working on her petty cases, Vidya suddenly gets her big break. Kiran Kumar, a very stern and suspicious looking person, walks into her life and offers her an assignment with wad of currency as well as an expense account. All she is given is a name and age of a girl and a birthmark on her palm to trace her. With funny trial and error methods, Vidya manages to find her.

    With this success follows another assignment at double the fees. She has to find another girl, again with only a name, age and a birthmark. Vidya is elated and wants to share her success with her father, but he will have nothing of it. For him, this is not how a traditional Muslim girl of 30 behaves.

    Somehow, Vidya succeeds in tracking this girl too through the pretext of carrying out a screen-test for a TV serial. And, now, Kiran Kumar is ready to give her a third and last case. She has to find a young man and is given his name but this time there is no birth mark. Only hint is that the boy has a toe missing in his right leg. But, by this time, Vidya is convinced Kiran Kumar is not a good man and lays a trap to find out his background. This is also the time to end the cat and mouse game and open the cards.

    Bobby Jasoos is basically a Vidya Balan show in toto. Her various getups are well done but the real Vidya pops out of each of them. But what is good about the casting is that, in the supporting cast, the film has a host of veterans in Kiran Kumar, Rajendra Gupta, Zarina Wahab, Supriya Pathak, Tanve Azmi and an effective Arjan Bajwa. The veterans live up to their reputation while the rest of the supporting star cast also does well. Ali lives up to the confidence of casting him.

    But as Vidya’s two lives are juxtaposed: that of family and her love to play detective, the film wavers, loses grip. The suspense created around Kiran Kumar and Bajwa shadowing Vidya turn out to be damp squibs. Gupta and Vidya’s equation, which remained ice cold throughout, changes in a few minutes’ worth of melodrama, which is cliché. Thankfully, there is little of music to slow the pace further.

     With Hyderabad as backdrop and a Muslim background, the release of Bobby Jasoos bang in the middle of the month of Ramzan shows utter lack of wisdom. 

    ‘Lekar Hum Deewana Dil’… going nowhere

    Lekar Hum Deewana Dil is a campus love story. There is a usual group of a bunch of friends, which includes the lead pair. The bunch generally has a good time because they are never in a class room but hang around the campus all day. The hero sports a guitar around his neck on daily basis. So what’s new?

    Armaan Jain and Deeksha Seth are college friends and they are in love but not quite aware of the fact, while to rest of their friends it is obvious that there is more than mere friendship. These two realise they are in love only when they have guzzled a few bottles of beer. Every love story needs a villain so in their case, the villain is the north-south divide. Deeksha is a south Indian and her father believes in maintaining traditions.

    Besides his guitar, Armaan also owns a bike, mandatory for any college going young man in films! When Deeksha’s father is determined to marry her off to a suitor from his own community, she and Armaan decide to elope. Their first stop is Goa where they take shelter at Armaan’s uncle’s place. Soon the uncle betrays them and informs his family. The couple has to flee in hurry. And, of all the places, they land up in Maoist territory! Meanwhile, they have found the time to go through a temple wedding.

    Their stay at the Maoist camp is used to force in an item song and put on test the romance of the two immature people. Their love snaps under pressure and the bad circumstances they have landed in. The couple now hate each other as much as they loved earlier. Back in Mumbai, the divorce procedure starts at a family court. Sessions with a marriage counselor don’t work as both start fighting at the very sight of the other.

    As the divorce process is in progress, both embark on a great nostalgia montage of their good times together. Such montages have saved many broken romances in so many films so far so why should it not work here too? After all, love stories are all about happy endings. This is no Romeo and Juliet.

    Despite launching a new pair, with the hero much touted as the grandson of late Raj Kapoor, the film seems to be more about saving money rather than spending on it. With two new faces, there is nobody in the supporting cast whom one may have seen before. To add to that, even the promotion leaves much to be desired.

    The story is woven around a very flimsy plot. Screenplay is poor and so is the direction. With a song being forced in at every excuse, just a single number, Khalifa….. seems to have worked with youth. Rest of the aspects are below average. As for performances, Armaan is certainly not an actor; he is too raw and chocolaty. Deeksha, because of her south experience, does better.

    Star Plus & BR Films announce prime time serial ‘Viraasat’ launch

    MUMBAI: Star Plus has slotted the BR Films production Viraasat in its 9 pm weekday primetime slot. The serial features Sangita Ghosh and Rohit Roy in the title roles.

    “Our currently running 9 pm soap Miilee had reached its logical conclusion, so it is imperative for us to launch a show which could fit well into the bigness of primetime 9 pm band and be a through and through entertainer, too. With Viraasat that’s exactly what we are getting for the viewers,” says Star India Content EVP Deepak Segal.

    “Our endeavor is to dole out a classic family entertainer as it goes on to set its own mark, one which has no precedence, and thereby expect Viraasat to help us consolidate the channel’s supremacy in the primetime slot after having already done so, successfully in the weekend band” he elaborated further.

    Viraasat, would be a multi-starrer family drama that will have a strong line-up of television’s popular faces including Kiran Kumar, Deepak Quazir, Aman Verma, Amarr Upadhyay, Jayati Bhatia and Pooja Raval Ghai.

    The serial will tell the story of two people Rahul Lamba- played by Rohit Roy & Priyanka Kharbanda – played by Sangita Ghosh, who are madly in love with each other, however are bound by an age old enmity between their warring families, the release adds.
