Balaji attempts to break Sony jinx with new show

MUMBAI: Mid-March this year, Balaji Telefilms’ Kya Haadsa Kya Haqeeqat (KHKH) which was originally a one-hour Fri-Sat-Sun show from 8 – 9 pm, became a Fri-Sat half-hour show from 8 – 8.30 pm in a new avtaar based on socio drama themes.

Two months down the line, the change seems to have done nothing substantially positive to the fortunes involved in the show, which some time back underwent another unsuccessful trial-n-error experiment when its original thriller format was changed to focus on supernatural themes. KHKH has finally come to an end. It’s last episode aired on 15 May.Come 21 May, KHKH will be replaced by a new Balaji show – a sci-fi thriller titled King Aasman Ka Raja (KAKR). Sci-fi genre is becoming an in-thing. Lately, Doordarshan launched Bongo, another sci-fi thriller.

KAKR stars Riva Bubber and model-turned-actor Kushal Punjabi in lead roles. Bubber was unceremoniously replaced by Raavee Gupta in Balaji’s flagship Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi but later recalled after Raavee was shown the door. Three months back, Bubber opted out from Star Plus’ show Kyun Hota Hai Pyarrr when her contract came up for renewal. Recently she did a few episodes of Sahara’s Raat Hone Ko Hai and Star Plus’ Krishna Arjun.

Manish Khandelwal, who directed Virasat, Sshhh… Koi Hai, Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka, Achanak 37 Saal Baad and Thriller at 10, wields the megaphone for this new show from the Balaji stable.

KHKH being replaced by KAKR has actually come as a surprise and mystery. Not so long ago, Balaji’s Creative Head Ekta Kapoor had categorically told indiantelevision.com that she was not planning anything with Sony Entertainment Television for the current fiscal.

When contacted yesterday, she said, “It happened very recently and things fell into place. The channel did not ask for an end to KHKH. I suggested it. I started feeling that I had outgrown it. I wanted a change.”

If that is the case, why has Kapoor not outgrown the long-running three shows on Star Plus- Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahanii Ghar Ghar Kii, and especially Kaahin Kissii Roz which has gone absolutely haywire and devoid of sanity? Seems, there is more to it than meets the eye.

Recently, Mrinal Jha, writer of the Zee daily soap Tum Bin Jaaoon Kahaan served a legal notice on Balaji Telefilms for “concept theft” over one of their series in Kya Haadsa Kya Haqeeqat (starring Shilpa Saklani). Jha co-authored the novel November Rain on which Aruna Irani’s Tum Bin Jaaoon Kahaan is based. For quite some time now, apart from Kkusum (that too till a certain point of time), nothing from Balaji stable has worked for Sony Entertainment Television. Kkoi Dil Mein Hai (Karishma Tanna, Poorva Gokhhale) launched last winter has turned out to be a damp squib. Kkehna Hai Kuch Mujhko (Pallavi Joshi, Kiran Karmarkar) may have been critically acclaimed but has found it tough going as regards making a mark on the ratings charts.

Even Kaahin Kissii Roz attracted a good number of eyeballs until Kapoor decided to bring in the re-incarnation theory. And remember the SET story of the expensive failure Kahani Terri Merri coming in place of Kutumb which had bombed in its new avtaar? KTM was said to be Kapoor’s dream project and some industry sources even claimed it to be a Devdas on television. Will Kapoor bring some smiles in Sony Entertainment Television this time? Or is it that Balaji Telefilms and SET are just not made for each other?

  • Sony to unveil summer collection

    Sony to unveil summer collection

MUMBAI: This time last year, amidst the World Cup euphoria, Sony Entertainment announced five new shows and its plans to launch a couple more every season.

As for this summer, the channel seems ready to buttress its strong weekend programming. After revamping its existing shows, the channel will launch next show from the Balaji Telefilms stable Kkehna Hai Kuch Mujhko, from 11 March 2004 at 8:30 pm.

Although the show will telecast its debut episode on Thursday, it is actually a Friday – Sunday show with bankable stars Pallavi Joshi, Kiran Karmarkar as the protagonists. The launch of KHKM will also coincide with another Balaji weekend show – the supernatural suspense thriller Kya Haadsa Kya Haqeeqat – turning from a one-hour show into a half-hour one.

‘Balaji meets Astitva (the movie)’ as Ekta Kapoor calls KHKM, is a soap with a non-commercial story line.

Talking to indiantelevision.com, Kapoor offers that the show is about the life of an Indian woman after 35. Typical to the Indian scenario, the woman realises that she is reduced to being just a mother or a wife. The soap details her journey of self rediscovery.

As for the Thursday debut episode, the channel will be airing a special “Shagun” (the astrology angle again?) episode to introduce the story and the characters.

But it is not just the weekend franchise that the channel is planning to build. The channel will also be launching its youth centric show Yeh Meri Life Hai , produced by Optimystix Entertainment India Limited in the 10 pm slot on weekdays sometime in March-April period.

Meanwhile the channel is all set to introduce a fantasy daily Chandrakanta, on 23 January 2004 at 8:30 pm. Directed by Nirja Guleri, the show was a big hit on Doordarshan in the early 90s. Back then, the show with a big canvas and bigger budget amassed a whopping Rs 670 million in revenue for Doordarshan.

Later, in 1999, Prime Channel – the production house – shot the next season for DD1. Later Star Plus began airing the repeats of the show, but unfortunately the show didn’t work and was pulled off.

Based on a novel of similar name, Chandrakanta is the story of eternal love set against the battle and strife between two kingdoms Naugarh and Vijaygarh. Starring Shikha Swaroop, Shahbaz Khan, Mukesh Khanna, Parikshit Sahani, Pankaj Dheer, Kruttika Desai and Kalpana Iyer, the show was canned on sets worth Rs 3.5 million and designed by ace designer Nitin Desai.

The show that will air from Monday to Wednesday is almost a decade old. Will the audience (the kids) lap it up? We will just have to wait and watch.

Kiran Karmarkar, Niki Aneja feted at Lions’ awards

MUMBAI: On Thursday night, the Bhaidas Hall in Vile Parle (a suburb in Mumbai) buzzed with anticipation, excitement and delight, as the Lions Club International gave away awards honouring the film and television industry for 2003.

12 awards were presented to the television industry. Aaj Tak was adjudged the News Channel for the year 2003. UTV turned up trumps as the Best Production House. Hotly contested, the best actor in the male category was won by Kiran Karmarkar (Om Aggarwal) for Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, when the best actor in the female category was bagged by Niki Aneja Walia (Dr Simran) for Astitva… Ek Prem Kahani.

Rajeev Khandelwal (Sujal, a favourite with female viewers) was adjudged the Best Male Newcomer, while Mona Singh won the Best Female Newcomer Award for her histrionics in the aggressively marketed SET serial Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin.

Ajai Sinha was conferred the Best Director Award for his skills on Astitva… Ek Prem Kahani, while the Best Serial Award went to the thus far unfeted Kittie Party. Urvashi Dholakia who has become a household name, courtesy the character of Komolika in Kasautii Zindagii Kay, was declared the Best Vamp. Shabir Ahluwalia (Rishi, better known as Mrs Braganza, these days) proved to be her counterpart, when he held the trophy aloft for the Best Villain for Kahiin To Hoga.

Pankaj Kapur, who plays Musaddilal in Sab TV’s Office Office got the best TV actor in a comic role (male), and better half Supriya Pathak as Hansa Parekh on Star Plus’ Khichdi got the best TV actor in a comic role (female) award.

Surprisingly, three serials that currently rule the roost at the TRP stakes- Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Sanjivani- A Medical Boon and Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand did not win awards in any category, perhaps due to the fact that there were only 12 awards waiting to be given away in contrast to 19 awards meant for the film industry.

City police commissioner Dr P S Pasricha presented the awards.
