Paramount’s Pam Kaufman calls it a day

MUMBAI: Pam Kaufman, the executive who turned a “yellow sea sponge” into a global merchandising juggernaut, has announced her departure from Paramount after more than two decades with the entertainment giant.

Kaufman, who served as chief executive of international markets and global consumer products, will leave at the end of the year, though she plans to stay on as a consultant. Her exit comes as David Ellison and Jeff Shell take the reins of the newly restructured media company.

During her tenure,  Kaufman transformed Paramount’s consumer products division into a $7bn retail business. She oversaw the expansion of iconic franchises including SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Paw Patrol across more than 170 international markets. Under her watch, the company struck lucrative partnerships with brands from Stella McCartney to Supreme, many of which sold out within minutes of launch.

The executive, who began her career at Nickelodeon in the 1990s, became the network’s first chief marketing officer in 2008. She launched over 20 television programmes and helped the company achieve $1bn in revenue. Her marketing prowess was perhaps best demonstrated with the Kids’ Choice Awards, where she nearly tripled voter participation.

Kaufman’s international expansion efforts included launching Nickelodeon-themed resorts in Mexico and the United States, whilst the gaming division she oversaw produced hits like Star Trek Fleet Command, which has racked up 20m downloads.

“We built billion-dollar franchises,” Kaufman wrote in her farewell post on LinkedIn. “We turned a yellow sea sponge into a global icon.”

The departure marks the end of an era for Paramount, which has been grappling with the rapid shift to streaming whilst trying to maintain its traditional television and film businesses. Kaufman played a crucial role in supporting the international rollout of Paramount+ and Pluto TV.

Beyond Paramount, Kaufman sits on the boards of Lindblad Expeditions, Stella McCartney, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. She will remain in these roles.

“I’ve truly had the slime of my life,” she quipped, referencing Nickelodeon’s trademark green goo, “in the ‘in between’ with all of you.”

  • Nickelodeon’s metaverse twist to Kids’ Choice Awards 2021

Nickelodeon’s metaverse twist to Kids’ Choice Awards 2021

Mumbai: Viacom18’s kids channel Nickelodeon has announced the 2021 edition of Kids’ Choice Awards (KCA). Interestingly, the awards show will come to life in a screening at Decentraland, the place of the first ever metaverse concert. The voting for the awards commenced on 7 February.

This innovative idea was conceptualised and crafted by Wavemaker India for Perfetti Van Melle India in partnership with Viacom18.

The awards will be based on fun gaming themed night where Nicktoons will be seen  playing a lot of arcade games while also presenting awards to super stars and kids favorites like Badshaah, Deepika Padukone, Siddharth Malhotra, Sara Ali Khan, Kiara Advani, Rashmika Mandana and  influencers  like Anushka Sen and more. The event will also see olympians, paralympians amongst others being celebrated for their inspiring achievements.

Category first & insight-driven: Viacom18 kids cluster’s approach to marketing explained

Along with the metaverse, the awards will witness the biggest simulcast this year across 14+ multiscreen platforms- on TV with Nick, Sonic, Nick HD+, Tata Play on Viacom18’s OTT platforms Voot, Voot Kids along with Jio TV and Jio TV+ and on digital platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram on 27 March 2022 at 8.30 p.m. The screening will allow users to create virtual avatars and experience the slime fountains, ride on the blimp and play fun games while being virtually immersed at the event, said the statement.

Speaking on this creative theme, Viacom18 Hindi mass entertainment and kids TV network head Nina Elavia Jaipuria said that KCA reiterates the company’s commitment towards empowering and encouraging young audiences to voice their choice. “Nickelodeon has created new benchmarks for innovation in the category and KCA 2021 is all set to provide a seamless unified experience to consumers on a platform of their choice including the first ever metaverse screening in the category,” she added.

“Associating with a category first metaverse event allows us to augment our engagement with our audience, make it more meaningful and tech forward. In times when every child is engaging with a screen this clutter breaking association allows us to be ahead of the curve in striking a connection with families,” stated Perfetti Van Mell marketing director Rohit Kapoor.

Speaking about the emerging trend of metaverse, Wavemaker India chief content officer Karthik Nagarajan said, “Content marketing on metaverse platform is the next wave in digital marketing. Our philosophy is to positively provoke our clients and create industry-first innovative work for our brands.”

With several cutting-edge additions and pioneering initiatives, the run up to the seventh edition of the awards witnessed many ground-breaking influencer and digital outreach campaigns.

To fan the frenzy, the KCA gang of influencers engaged in conversation live on twitter spaces about their favourite nominees which included kid influencers, young adults, and mom bloggers such as Siddharth Nigam, Cahat Tewani and Saru Mukherjee to name a few.

Pulling out all stops, KCA 2021 also curated a special treasure hunt for its fans on Instagram along with the KCA gang, to win special hampers and vouchers. Specially curated superfan contests and sessions entertained kids across Instagram and YouTube. Platform specific engagements across MX Taka Tak, Instagram and other short format content platforms encouraged young fans to groove to the KCA shake.

Taking the overall marketing initiative, a step forward, Nickelodeon exclusively partnered with 99 Pancakes to curate special limited edition meals. Through partnerships with Red Wolf and Nirula’s, KCA 2021 offered discounts to people who cast their votes.

Category first & insight-driven: Viacom18 kids cluster’s approach to marketing explained

Mumbai: Viacom18 kids cluster’s month-long campaign around Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards (KCA) is culminating on 27 March. Last year, when the broadcaster hosted the event virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, it saw a remarkable level of engagement with 1.5 million votes. This year, the network has taken category innovation a step further by launching a metaverse experience in ‘Decentraland’ where a screening of KCA will take place.

The multi-platform event will be broadcasted across 14 channels including TV (Nick and Sonic), social media handles, and OTT platforms (Voot, Voot Kids, JioTV, and JioTV+). Viacom18 has also partnered with DTH operator Tata Play to air the event via its service Tata Play Fun Learn.

Talking about the category-first move and metaverse experience, Viacom18 head of marketing kids’ entertainment cluster Sonali Bhattacharya shares, “Users can either rent or buy virtual land there and use it as they see fit. We’re the first to launch a metaverse experience that is desktop friendly. So, you don’t need a piece of hardware like an Oculus VR headset to be a part of the screening.”

“Events such as KCA were an opportunity for the network to interact with kids on the ground, however, even as we come out of the pandemic, parents still reserve concerns regarding the safety of their children. In Decentraland, kids would be able to engage in social activities they couldn’t on the ground such as jumping a trampoline or playing in a ball pit albeit virtually,” Bhattacharya adds.

Since last year, Viacom18 kids cluster has been very active when it comes to social and digital engagement with kids, remarks Bhattacharya. “A whole lot of engagement is happening on YouTube and there’s a surge in influencer marketing that is happening on platforms such as Instagram and MX Takatak. We are regularly engaging with kids and are in touch with the best and safest influencers in the category. As a responsible kids’ brand, we take the choice of influencers and bloggers very seriously as there is a lot of content out there that is not ideal for kids’ consumption,” she tells.

The network collaborates with influencers like Siddharth Nigam, a former child artist who played the lead in “Aladdin – Naam Toh Suna Hoga,” who creates peppy dance videos that attract a lot of viewership from their desired audiences i.e., 8–12-year-olds. During the pandemic, Nickelodeon conceptualised campaigns such as ‘Nick Says Dance,’ “Nick Jr Creatively Yours,’ and ‘Sonic School of Cool’ to engage kids getting bored at home.

Talking about the insight behind the campaigns, Bhattacharya says, “Kids love one-upmanship and we should foster that in a safe and healthy manner. We realised that the biggest space that a child could exercise this was in school which was snatched away from them because of coronavirus. We said let’s do ‘School of Cool’ virtually where our influencers would engage kids as teachers would in classrooms and teach them lifehacks in a fun way. That campaign really struck a chord with kids and even now that it has ended, you see a certain amount of organic engagement with it.”

The network also partnered with food brands such as 99pancakes, Smokin Joe’s, and Belgian Waffles which displayed the network’s popular IPs on their packaging. “What happened was that family time increased with both parents and kids staying indoors during the pandemic. There was a surge in cooking and home delivery in homes. We thought why not tie-up with food brands, who were more than happy to have our characters on their packs, and it gave us a channel to reach parents and their kids meaningfully,” states Bhattacharya.

“We have a big tie-up in the North that we’re trying to scale. The challenge in a country like India is that one size doesn’t fit all. You have to approach every market differently,” she further says.

For an audience that is easily distractible and a challenge to reach, category innovations such as these are the heart and soul of kids’ channels. Despite being aware that there is a massive audience of kids on social media platforms, Bhattarchaya claims that it is difficult to attribute and measure their engagement with the target group. “Kids cannot even be on social media platforms until they’ve crossed the age of 13 but we all know that a very large part of consumption on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram is completely driven by kids. Whenever we do a tentpole, it is a 360-degree marketing approach where we harness the power of our channels that reach 52 million kids every day. We leave no stone unturned and use our handles on YouTube to the fullest for online engagement. Unfortunately, we still don’t have a tool that can carve out how much of that reach has come from a nine-year-old, or whether the engagement is coming from Instagram versus another digital platform. I’m sure it is a matter of time before the code is cracked.”

The summer months are a critical time for kids’ entertainment channels who see some of the highest viewership during the quarter. Viacom18 kids’ cluster is planning to release new episodes of its tentpole shows “Bhoot Bandhus,” “Chikoo Aur Bunty,” “Motu Patlu,” “Rudra,” and “Shiva” accompanied by high decibel marketing campaigns. It also has a series of made-for-television movies lined up that work really well with kids, according to Bhattacharya.

When queried whether the network is looking to resume ground initiatives once again, Bhattacharya replies in the affirmative. She says, “We do wish to incorporate some on-ground activity in the summer months. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that nothing crazy happens. Today in Bombay, Delhi, and tier-II cities things are looking relatively safer and we’re hoping to come back with the entire touch-feel-play experience.”

“It’s been an exciting journey and Nick has remained the top kids’ channel for eight years in a row,” she concludes.

  • Nick to double ad rates for Kids Choice Awards

Nick to double ad rates for Kids Choice Awards

MUMBAI: Kids Choice Awards is back to draw Indian kids in a ‘slime’ fest! Viacom18’s flagship property that debuted in India in 2013 is being brought back by Nickelodeon, to celebrate those who entertained the kids the most.

Typically the awards in the media and entertainment world are tailor-made for adults, in terms of content as well as the personalities who adorn it. Being a leader in the genre, Nick decided to tailor-make an award show for kids that truly values their opinion.

With a total of 13 categories to vote for, some of the key awards categories include Best Movie Actor (Male and Female), Best Bollywood Movie, Best Television Show and Best Indian Cartoon Character. After two weeks of online voting through the Nickelodeon website, kids have chosen their favourite, that will be revealed in the gala event  on 5 December 2016 at Reliance Studios, Film City, Mumbai.

“Now that the voting has ended, we will count the votes and a special team of auditors will monitor it, following which we will make the final winner announcements at the ground event,” Viacom18 business head kids cluster Nina Elavia Jaipuria shared as the countdown for the awards began.

A televised version will also go on air — first on Nickelodeon around Christmas next month — followed by other sister channels under Viacom18 to expand its visibility. “We will air KCA on Colors, Rishtey, Colors Marathi, Colors Gujarati, Colors Bangla and, of course, on VOOT as well. We envision Kids Choice Awards as an inclusive show for the whole family and, therefore, having it on GECs will optimise it as a larger property with a greater reach.”

That definitely spells well with the channel’s advertisers, who, according to Jaipuria, find the property very promising. “When we started KCA in 2013, we weren’t in the leadership position. This year, we are in the lead, having topped the genre for the 57th week since BARC started releasing its data. Naturally, our advertisers and sponsors are also a lot more confident in the property,” Jaipuria shared.

Dabur Red Paste has come on board as the presenting sponsor for the kids show, along with Lifebuoy and Choki Choki by Inbisco India, and Funskool (MRF Group) as the associate sponsor.

“Further strengthening our resolve to improve oral health in the country and to reach out to

more kids, Dabur Red Paste has joined hands with Nickelodeon and KCA to further spread the message about dental hygiene and educate children about best oral care practices through a focussed and specially crafted campaign,” said Dabur India marketing head – oral care Harkawal Singh, on the brand’s association with Kids Choice Awards.

Given the excitement surrounding the second edition of KCA in India, Jaipuria is expecting the spot rates for KCA to be double than that of the channel’s normal rates. “KCA is an expensive property for us. We are doing ti because we strongly believe that we are the leaders in kids entertainment in the country. We are putting our money where  our mouth is, and we deserve to get it monetised,” Jaipuria said.

Jaipuria observed that kids also enjoy a lot of content mostly aimed at adults, be it movies, or TV shows with fantasy in it. Does that fragment the viewership of kids genre and in turn impact advertising? “While fragmentation of viewers is there, as kids also watch GECs and movie channels, they ultimately are loyal to content tailor-made for them. They might be watching GECs but they are a passive audience there, and hence brands that are truly interested to communicate to kids must come to kids channels. The fact that our ad sales pie is growing at a 11–12 per cent and we are estimated to close the year at Rs 500 crore speaks volumes. Nick grown our top line ad rates by 30 per cent y-o-y since last October; and that of Sonic by about 50 per cent, ” she added.

In order to build momentum up to the awards, the channel has been promoting the property heavily across its channels in the kids cluster.

“Apart from tying to the festive mood of Christmas, airing the show sometime mid-December also gives us enough time to promote it. The initial phase of it was the announcement of the show and calling in the voters in October, and it will end with a bang in December,”Jaipuria said, adding that the network has aired around 3000-odd promos of KCA in the past few weeks.

Apart from on-air promotions, the network plans to engage the kids on ground with several partnerships, including McDonalds. Van activation across 30 cities will target tier II and tier III audience, and print advertising is also part of the marketing mix.
