    India-born American filmmaker bags two awards at Manhattan Filmfest

    NEW DELHI: Emmy-nominated America-based filmmaker Tirlok Malik has been honoured with the special Outstanding Achievement in Multicultural Arts in acting, filmmaking, and immigrant advocacy at the International Film Festival in Manhattan.

     

    The Festival held recently showed films dealing with social issues. The festival has the most diverse selection of world class films and a focus on social issues and advocacy as part of the programming and goals.

     

    Malik has made many films starting from Lonely In America, Khushiyaan, On Golden Years, and many more. They all deal with the effects of migration in America.

     

    Malik, who has given a break to many new faces in his films in front or behind the camera, said, “I am happy to be a part of this festival and I feel honored for this awards.”

     

    Malik also received an award for best film award for On Golden Years.

     

     Luis Pedron, co-founder of the festival, said the film On Golden Years deals with social issues of retirement that millions of first generation immigrants face in their lives.

     

    Films from many countries, including Israel, Australia, Philippines, Sweden, Singapore, and the United States were shown at IFFM.

     

    Malik accepted the award on the behalf of the team of On Golden Years and said, “It was team work making this film.”

     

    The film is produced by Golden Movies. The idea of the story is inspired by the book Seeking Roots by Iggy Ignatius who is also the co-director of the film. The film stars among others Ranjit Chowdhry, Jyoti Singh, Reeves Lehmann, Shetal Shah, Noor Naghmi, Tirlok Malik, among others.

     

    The film has been shot at the Indian retirement community Shantiniketan in Florida.

     

    Meanwhile, Malik recently launched a website for streaming Indian-American movies www.nritvfilmclub.com. The website seeks to promote new talents as Malik wants to create what he calls ‘NRI-wood’ just like Hollywood and Bollywood.

    Filmmaker Tirlok Malik awarded National AIA Honour Award

    NEW DELHI: US based Indian filmmaker Tirlok Malik has been awarded the National AIA Honor Award by Association of Indians in America for his contribution as a filmmaker.

     

    AIA, the oldest national association of Asian Indians in America, was founded in 1967. The association continues to recognise people with exceptional qualities and have organised national honour awards for those excelling in their respective fields of medicine, business, science, technology, art, and others.

     

    This is the first time that the association has honoured a filmmaker. Malik said he was humbled by this award.

     

    The event was attended by many AIA committee members from all over US and also many US Congressman from Chicago.

     

    Malik the founder of the NRI TV Film Club had recently made a Punjabi film, Khushiyaan, starring Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Rama Vij among others.

     

    Malik, who has won several awards including one for his very first film ‘Lonely in America’ in which he had also acted, had been nominated for New York Emmy Award in the category of Historical Programming-Cultural Historical in a Thirteen/WNET segment. His other films include Love Lust and Marriage with Dipti Naval.

     

    “I love making films in New York,” were his opening lines in the segment on Indian filmmaking of which Malik was also the segment producer and has been aired several times on Thirteen/WNET in both- Setting the Stage and the New York Voices programmes.

     

    He has also worked as line producer for many Indian films like Ambedkar, Lajja and Rajnikant’s Sivaji.

    Tirlok Malik’s Khushiyaan at Teaneck International Film Festival

    NEW DELHI: Emmy-Nominated America-based filmmaker Tirlok Malik‘s Punjabi film Khushiyaan is to be screened at the Teaneck International Film Festival in Teaneck, New Jersey.

    The screening will be on 11 November.

    Khushiyaan portrays the complex emotions of leaving parents in India and getting caught up in a busy American life. Shot in both India and New York, it combines family drama, comedy, and music into a thought-provoking film which is the journey of every NRI family. “It is the journey of family and as you‘re watching it, you may be surprised to find yourself there,” says Malik who has been a pioneer of Indian American cinema with films like ‘Lonely in America‘ and ‘Love, Lust and Marriage‘.

    The film is distributed worldwide by Eros Entertainment.

    Malik directed Khushiyaan, featuring Jasbir Jassi – famed singer of Dil Ley Gayee Kudi Gujarat Dee – making his debut as a lead actor, thespians Kulbushan Kharbanda and Rama Vij, Tisca Chopra, Deep Dhillon, Shrey Bawa, Vivek Shauq, and Gurpreet Guggi.

    Khushiyaan is produced by Darshan Garg, D.P. Goyal, and Pardeep Bansal. The music is composed by Jaidev Kumar and there is also a Shabd sung by the late Ghazal King Jagjit Singh.

    The film‘s writer Rajan Gangahar won the “best story” award at the Punjabi International Film Academy Award (PIFAA) held in Toronto.

    Eros to release Punjabi film Khushiyaan

    MUMBAI: Eros International will release the Punjabi film Khushiyaan worldwide.

    Khushiyaan will reflect on the experiences of many families across the world. “It’s a slice of life; it’s the poetry of what we learn from our relationships,” said director Tirlok Malik.

    Malik is a pioneer of films about Indian-American immigrant themes. His romantic comedy, Lonely in America, was featured in 74 countries on HBO and 37 national and international film festivals. Winning many awards, the film won a special mention at the London Film Festival.

    Produced by Darshan Garg, D.P Goyal and Pradeep Bansal under the banner of Kanhiya Film Production, the film stars Kulbushan Kharbanda, Rama Vij, Tisca Chopra, Deep Dhillon, Shrey Bawa, Vivek Shauq and Gurpreet Guggi.

    In addition to making his own films, Malik and his New York-based company Apple Productions has line produced the US portion of many films with some of India’s biggest stars such as Rajinikanth in Sivaji, Kamal Haasan in Vettayadu
    Villayadu, Surya in Vaaranam Aayiram, Mammootty in Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and Sunny Deol in I Love New Year.
