  • ‘Jeet’ to replace ‘Khullja….’ from 10 Oct.

‘Jeet’ to replace ‘Khullja….’ from 10 Oct.

MUMBAI: Jeet, a new one hour drama based on Fox’s Boston Public, will fill the 8.30 pm slot vacated by the Aman Verma hosted game show Khullja Sim Sim currently on Fridays on Star Plus from 10 October.

Khullja Sim Sim ends its over two year run in the first week of October, to be followed by a series of the Best of Khullja Sim Sim on weekends.

The Indianised version of the behind-the-scenes look at the personal and professional lives of teachers working at a midsize high school, Jeet has been entrusted to the relatively young production house Rose Movies. The Goldie Behl-Srishti Arya promoted production house ventured into TV software creation with the daringly different late night drama Lipstick on Zee last year. While Lipstick has run successfully for over a year, having gained an extension of 100 episodes recently, Rose Movies was recently entrusted with the creation of fresh episodes of children’s serial Shaka Laka Boom Boom by Star Plus, a series nurtured thus far by production major UTV. While Shaka Laka… was handed over to Rose on a piecemeal basis, Jeet is the first full fledged prime time creation by the production house for Star.

Jeet is the first experimental theme Star has toyed with since the demise of Josh… Aktion Unlimited, the action packed drama series that was supposed to have revolutionised weekly television shows, but ended up as a 13 episode damp squib.

Jeet will have Arun Govil, Ankur Nair (last seen in another ill fated Star experiment, Kashmeer), Mrinal Kulkarni, Pawan Malhotra and newcomer Aparna Tilak in the lead roles.

  • Star completes clean sweep of Top 50

Star completes clean sweep of Top 50

MUMBAI: It had to happen some day! Star Plus has completed a clean sweep of the Top 50 shows for the first time.

Star’s supreme dominance has been highlighted in the ratings for the week 26 January – 1 February for C&S 4+, eight cities + UP, one million plus towns.

Consider the sheer domination of the top programmes: Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi features eight times; Shaka Laka Boom Boom features five times; Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Kasautii Zindagi Kay, Shagun, Bhabhi, Kaahin Kissi Roz feature four times; Kumkum features three times, Shararat, Krishna Arjun, Kumkum, Khichdi, Kyun Hota Hai Pyarrr, Kashmeer, Ssh …Koi Hai, Karishma Ka Karishma, Son Pari, Kuch Kar Dikhana Hai, Sanjivani, Khullja Sim Sim, Kehta Hai Dil, Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand feature once.

Mindshare Fulcrum MD Vikram Sakhuja says: “Star TV spent the year 2002 in expanding its audience base and increasing it to a certain pre-determined critical mass. They persisted with the saas-bahu themes in order to attain their objectives. The next step involved the process of guiding this mass and exposing them to different programming genres or options. In the beginning of the year, Star launched an intelligent mix (cache) of new programmes – game shows, kids’ shows, variety shows, amongst others. The impressive results simply demonstrate that their strategy is succeeding.”

A Salomon Smith Barney report released in January 2003 says that Star Plus’ dominance is commendable, considering the fact that the channel broadcasts several one-hour shows from Monday to Friday. The channel could have fewer entries from its Monday – Friday prime-time slot in the TAM Top 100 programme list; whereas Zee and Sony have more opportunities because they have 30-minute shows pitted against Star.

Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand, Kehta Hai Dil, Khullja Sim Sim, Sanjivani, Ssh…Koi Hai, Kashmeer are the shows which have a duration of one hour plus.

However, Star could gain phenomenally if it beefs up its marketing and communication efforts in the southern markets as this could complement the dominance in the western belt, say industry sources.

Till someone comes up with an innovative concept or theme, it looks as if Star is going to be quite lonely at the top.

Star Plus rejigs ‘Khullja Sim Sim’ format

MUMBAI: It seems Star Plus does not believe in resting on its laurels. The channel has decided to revamp year-old game show Khullja Sim Sim in a bid to ensure continuing viewer interest.

Khullja… going in for a makeover continues the makeover strategy that programming head Tarun Katial has been instituting for a number of the popular shows on Star Plus.

Khullja…, based on the popular worldwide format Lets Make a Deal, has now introduced a chance for contestants to play from one episode to the next, for the jackpot. Khullja.., currently in its second year, with over 65 episodes already telecast, will now have host Aman Verma raising the stakes for the ultimate jackpot. For example, the winner of one episode could trade his win for say a car, or a bigger prize, two cars, in the next episode. As the contestant keeps trading, week after week, he could land up with a mega jackpot – the grand luxury Hyundai Sonata car.

According to an official release, Manish, a participant was the first to take up the latest offer, and play for a higher value jackpot prize. He played from one episode to another, until he turned his initial prize of Rs 200,000 to Rs 500,000.

  • Aman, Sonali to switch shows in anniversary episodes on Star Plus

Aman, Sonali to switch shows in anniversary episodes on Star Plus

MUMBAI: It’s a unique way to celebrate a first anniversary. But trust Star Plus to take the innovative route even when it comes to something as simple as two of its shows completing one year of telecast.

The fact that both Khullja Sim Sim and Kya Masti Kya Dhuum will turn one during the extended ‘Independence weekend’ has probably also prompted the channel into getting the respective anchors to switch roles for the anniversary edition. At 8 pm on KMKD, host Aman Verma will take the place of Sonali Bendre. The lady on the other hand, will take Verma’s post as anchor of the game show at 9 pm.

Kya Masti Kya Dhuum has had, till date, over 250 children participating with 65 celebrities – Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Fardeen Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Salman Khan, Esha Deol among them. Khullja Sim Sim has had 500 participants for prizes worth over Rs 60 million, of which Rs 25 million worth of prizes have been disbursed over 52 episodes (including Rs 1 million worth of cars).

The anniversary episode will have Verma hosting the musical talent show Kya Masti Kya Dhuum, with Sonali coming in as the guest. While Aman charms his way into the show, Sonali keeps lighting up the stage with her valuable suggestions to the new host, Aman, says the channel. In Khullja Sim Sim, Sonali anchors in Aman’s place. Both episodes have lots of gifts, cash and a jackpot prize worth over Rs 3,00,000.

According to Verma, “I’ve never done theatre before, but the very first schedule of Khullja Sim Sim itself helped me learn to control my voice. I’ve learnt a lot from Khullja Sim Sim – dealing with live audiences, which is about 400-odd people. This has instilled confidence in me. The popularity I got for Khullja Sim Sim, helped several other shows to come my way. Life has taken a turnaround.”

New shows ‘Kya Masti Kya Dhuum’, ‘Khullja Sim Sim’ do a Star turn: Tam data

Star India’s new programming strategy for Friday nights has hit the right notes from Day 1 itself, as per information provided by the company.

Market research agency AC Nielsen’s TAM data for the first day of their screening on Friday 27 July, saw STAR Plus launch 3 new shows with a bang. The TRP ratings of the three shows, Kya Masti Kya Dhuum, hosted by Sonali Bendre, Khullja Sim Sim, hosted by Aman Verma and the horror show, Ssshhhh…Koi Hai…, have been very positive, according to a company release.

Market research agency AC Nielsen’s TAM data show all three shows have made an immediate impact with Kya Masti Kya Dhuum opening its account at 7.23 TVRs, Khullja Sim Sim at 9.80 TVRs and Ssshhhh…Koi Hai… at 5.85 TVRs.

The Tam data is for nine cities – Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Kanpur.

The release draws attention to the fact that the Sony Entertainment gameshow Jeeto Chappad Phaad Ke’s special episode, despite filmstar Urmilla Matondkar in the hot seat, failed to garner a decent viewership. According to the release, JCPK’s ratings the same night is 1.9 at 78.
