    MUMBAI: &pictures, has set the stage for the premiere of the modern day fairytale ‘Khoobsurat’ on Saturday, 11 July 8 pm. The ultimate family entertainer can be enjoyed by both younger and the older generation stars incandescent Sonam Kapoor, Bollywood hearthrob Fawad Khan and a fabulous supporting cast including acting heavyweight Kiron Kher and Ratna Pathak Shah.

     

    Directed by Shashanka Ghosh, a breezy romantic comedy ‘Khoobsurat’ narrates the story of perky and free spirited physiotherapist Mili (Sonam Kapoor) who due to the inability of her colleague has to treat a wheelchair-bound morose middle-aged noble Shekhar Singh Rathore (Hussain). Right from the word go, the very outspoken Mili finds herself to be a ‘royal misfit’ in the royal palace of Sambhalgarh, which is ‘manned’ by the lady of the house, Queen Nirmala Devi Rathore (Ratna Pathak Shah). The story further complicates when Mili ends up falling for AnchorPrince Vikram Rathore (Fawad Khan) who is antithesis of unabashedly vocal Mili.

     

    Zee Hndi Movie Channels deputy business head Ruchir Tiwari said, “The essence of Khoobsurat is to love and be yourself and a refreshing love story that can be enjoyed by every member of the family.     With an interesting soundtrack composed by sound tripper Sneha Khanwalkar, the film also marks fabulous cinematography capturing the magnificent and palatial locations across Rajasthan.

    MUMBAI: Zee Cinema is all set to premiere two movies this coming weekend.

     

    On 31 May, Zee Cinema will premiere Rajinikanth’s Lingaa in Hindi at 9 pm, whereas Zee Cinema HD will premiere the Fawad Khan – Sonam Kapoor starrer Khoobsurat at 9 pm.

     

    Zee Hndi Movie Channels deputy business head Ruchir Tiwari said, “With the recent revamp of Zee Cinema, our aim has been to air the fresh and varied movies on our channel. And when we talk about entertainment who better than Superstar Rajinikanth. Lingaa is full of Rajini’s magic and pure treat for his fans. On the other hand, Khoobsurat is a young refreshing romantic story. I am certain that the audiences are going to enjoy watching these movies in the comfort of their homes on a lazy Sunday night.”

     

    Lingaa marks the debut of Sonakshi Sinha in the South and it was also Rajinikanth’s first ever birthday release. The film, which also boasts double role by Rajinikanth, revolves around a small-time thief who reforms after learning about the role his grandfather played in building a village dam that transformed many lives.

     

    On the other hand, Khoobsurat narrates the story of a chirpy and rule breaker physiotherapist Milli (Sonam Kapoor) who falls in love with a Rajput prince Vikram (Fawad Khan).

    MUMBAI: After working with Fawad Khan in her last film Khoobsurat, Sonam Kapoor is set to work with the Khans of Bollywood.

     

    While she has already been finalised for Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, opposite Salman Khan, it is rumoured that the actress will also be working with the king of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan in his upcoming movie Raees.

     

    According to media reports, the 29-year old actress has been signed to play the lead opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Raees.

     

    Directed by Rahul Dholakia, Raees is Khan’s third movie with Farhan Akhtar. An action drama set in Gujarat, the film also stars Farhan Akhtar. Reportedly, while Khan plays the role of a bootlegger, Akhtar will be playing a cop.

     

    As per the reports, talking about Salman Khan, Kapoor said, “its double dhamaal with Salman since he is in double role. I am super excited to work with him. I am not allowed to talk about it. You will see. He is looking good in the film.”

     

    Sonam first shared the screen with the Dabangg star in her debut movie Saawariya in 2009.

     

    “I am living a dream right now. The shooting of the movie has started. Salman is so handsome and such a fantastic and amazing person to work with. I am on cloud nine,” she added while talking to the media.

    MUMBAI: The week saw four small-time films release in Spark, EkkeesTopon KI Salaami, Jigariya and Tamanchey. None had the face value, or could draw crowd. Also, each film catered a regional subject with scant identification for universal audience.

     

    Of the lot, EkkeesTopon KI Salaami had the best prospects and was a sincere attempt; however, it lost out balancing itself between a satire and a melodrama.
    Bang Bang opened to good houses as expected. However, the reports about its mediocre content caught up with it and the collections started dropping in a free fall. The fall which started a day after release got more pronounced as the new week began. The film, which had collected Rs 80 crore for its first five days (having opened on Thursday) managed to end its eight day week with Rs 115.3 crore.

     

    Haider has met with an indifferent response with only a few caring to talk about it. A pretentious film with a script penned on whim and fancy, it fails to identify with any sort of audience. It is as unreal as a cinema can get. The film continued to collect on the lower side of average throughout the week despite holidays to end its eight day week with Rs 35.15 crore.

     

    Daawat-e-Ishq has added just Rs 10 lakh in its third week taking its three week total to Rs 25.66 crore.

     

    Khoobsurat has added Rs 70 lakh in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 24.65 crore.

    MUMBAI: The last minute tug of war for screen time domination between Bang Bang and Haider to cash in on a five day holiday weekend starting Thursday did not help much as these holidays fell during, what is known as the dull period. Both the films could not manage to collect what was expected.

     

    Bang Bang opened with inflated admission rates which its content did not justify. The film catered action for the sake of action with the main villain being kept out through most parts of the movie. While the film registered a two figure drop the next day of its release, on Saturday the drop was more significant with around 30 per cent and not making much on Sunday either. The film collected Rs 80 crore for the first five days.

     

    Haider which also released on Thursday with the long weekend in sight, opened to an average collection and remained steady on the lower side through the weekend. There is little of universal appeal in the film. While there are not many takers on Kashmir’s terrorism, this film however binds a bunch of family members with terrorism with each one bending back over backwards to betray the other. The film managed to put together Rs 23.3 crore for the first five days.

     

    Desi Kattey was poor and collected Rs 3.1 crore in its first week while 3 AM is a loser with Rs 1.9 crore to account for its first week.

     

    Daawat-e-Ishq did average in its second week by collecting Rs 5.1 crore to take its two week total business to Rs 25.56 crore. On the other hand, Khoobsurat has managed to do well in its second week by collecting Rs. 7.5 crore to take its two week tally to Rs. 23.95 crore.

     

    Finding Fanny added Rs 65 lakh for its third week to take its three week total collection to Rs 27.70 crore. The biopic Mary Kom has added Rs 80 lakh for its fourth week taking its four week tally now to Rs. 56.55 crore.

    MUMBAI: There were a number of inconsequential releases last Friday most failing to find any patronage. Of these, 3 AM drew some footfall at multiplexes while Desi Kattey managed to pull some viewers at single screens in the Hindi belt.

     

    Balwinder Singh Famous Ho Gaya, despite starring two popular singers, Shaan and Mika, was poor. All three remained in limited range of lakhs, much short of the crore mark.

     

    Daawat-e-Ishq opened weak but picked up over the weekend. However, the weekdays’ collections were not strong and the film ended its first week with a figure of Rs 20.46 crore. The film added another Rs 3.46 crore for its second weekend taking its 10 day total to Rs 23.92 crore.

     

    Khoobsurat which had a lukewarm opening did not improve over the week to end its first week with Rs 16.45 crore.

     

    While Finding Fanny collected Rs 3.55 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 27.05 crore, Creature 3-D managed to add just about a crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 17.8 crore.

     

    Mary Kom collected Rs 2.4 crore in its third week to take its three week tally to Rs 55.75 crore.

    MUMBAI: The more the merrier seems to be the chant of all networks, these days.

     

    It was in 2011 that Star India launched its second general entertainment offering, Life OK. The sister channel of Star Plus, which replaced the defunct youth-oriented channel Star One, made headlines for its bold steps and differentiating content from the usual melodrama shown on the leading ones.

     

    Soon, Zee, the number two channel as per TAM TV ratings, plunged into already congested market with Zindagi. The second GEC from the network brought in popular shows from across the border to please the niche premium audience.

     

    If the two big networks had ventured into second GEC place, how could Sony stay behind? With Sony Pal, launched on 1 September, the Multi Screen Media (MSM) network added one more channel to its kitty.

    However, Disney, which has created content for channels, has popular television channels as well as numerous successful movies in different genres in its bag, still doesn’t have a GEC on its mind.

     

    “With kids’ channel we have presence among 4 to 14 years old, with bindass offerings we will be strongly placed for 14 to 34 years old and movie channels capture all across the age segments,” says Disney MD Siddharth Roy Kapur. The network will soon launch bindass Play, a music channel, which will take forward the philosophy and brand values of its most revenue generating channel, bindass.

     

    So will we see a GEC coming from the network’s stable? “We want to only concentrate on categories which are profitable and work with our core strengths,” he replies while elaborating that though everyone expects it to come up with a GEC, the network is not even thinking about it.

    MUMBAI: Daawat-e-Ishq opened to a lukewarm opening response and the collections remained on the lower side on Friday, improving marginally on Saturday and as well as on Sunday only to slide again today onwards.

     

    A Muslim background love story with an anti-dowry message, its linear narration makes it a routine fare. The film managed to collect Rs 13.6 crore for its opening weekend.

     

    Khoobsurat, having borrowed the basic plot from Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1980 hit of the same name, about a freewheeling woman entering and challenging the norms of the house laid down by the woman of the house, a royal one at that, comes a cropper. An insipid, poorly scripted and executed film, it started with below average opening with a little improvement on Saturday and Sunday as weekends normally do add to the collections. The film collected Rs 10.5 crore for its opening weekend.

     

    Finding Fanny, a zany road movie about a senior citizen being helped by his village mates find his childhood love, has made a little impact at the box office. Despite some favourable reviews by critics, the film has been able to put together just about Rs 23.5 crore in its first week.

     

    Creature 3-D, another Vikram Bhatt horror had to its credit a fully locally computer generated man-eating creature but the film lacked in substance, got monotonous as its stretched too long and failed to generate interest in the viewer. The film collected a poor Rs 16.8 crore in its first week.

     

    Mary Kom sustained ably in its second week in the absence of any formidable opposition and added Rs 11.15 crore in its second week taking its two week total to Rs 53.35.

     

    Raja Natwarlal added Rs 10 lakh in its third week taking its three week tally to Rs 23.85 crore. The movie will be a loser at the box office.

    ‘Khoobsurat’….. Not really!

    MUMBAI: Khoobsurat borrows its basic plot from the 1980 Hrishikesh Mukherjee film of the same name. Hrishikesh Mukherjee films were known for their simplicity and yet they appealed to all classes. His film was about a middleclass joint family where the matriarch of the house, Dina Pathak, runs her household with an iron fist and total domination. In the latest Khubsoorat, writer-director Shashanka Ghosh decides to give the simple Mukherjee film a ‘royal touch’ and massacres it royally.

     

    Sonam Kapoor is a physiotherapist working with the Indian Premiere League helping the likes of Dhoni and Shehwag and some alien entity called Kapoor who is so much in pain, he refuses to go out to bat until this physiotherapist gives his leg an almost fatal jerk! Something that could have handicapped someone else has cured Mr Kapoor! He is fit enough to go out and hit the last winning six. One thought, each IPL team had its own physio, here, the ‘poor’ IPL has only one for all the teams.

     

    Her credentials having been established and her reputation having travelled far and wide, she is invited to be an in-house physio to some ex-royal in Rajasthan. This ex-royal, Aamir Raza Hussain, has been wheelchair-bound since his accident ten years ago. He has so far dismissed about 40 physios trying to cure him. The fact is he doesn’t want to be cured. He holds himself responsible for the death of his 20-year-old-son, who died in a sports car crash that he had gifted him.

     

    Sonam enters the house and falls in love with the palace, its opulence and the luxury of the room assigned to her. This is just the beginning as more falling in love is yet to happen; which is, falling in love with the prince, Fawad Afzal Khan. Towards this end, her mother, Kirron Kher, encourages her every day on their regular Skype chats; this film may have turned Mukherjee’s idea of Khoobsurat from middle-class to royal while, at the same time, trying to make it contemporary.

     

    Sonam’s idea of physiotherapy for the reluctant royal is to take him around his gardens in a whirlwind wheelchair ride. The queen, Ratna Pathak, disapproves of her from day one and keeps making faces day after day. The prince Fawad keeps hovering around her despite being a very busy businessman. Earlier, it is established that he is engaged to be married to another royal, Aditi Rao Hydari.

     

    While Aamir Raza is getting cured merely by wheeling at jet speed around his palace and Pathak keeps making same faces of disapproval for Sonam, Fawad, and Sonam keep getting attracted to each other until they graduate to their first kiss.

     

    Comparing this film in any way to Mukherjee’s Khoobsurat is a sacrilege. The film and its makers have no sense of script, little sense of direction, and none for music. To sum it up, they have scant sense of filmmaking. The dialogue is pedestrian. Being a love story, the musical score needed to be strong but turns out to be poor and just one song, Naina…, is hummable. Editing is poor.

     

    Sonam plays the lead in this, her home production. She is a let-down acting-wise, looks-wise and dressing-wise. The makeup makes her look much older. Her clumsy, loud character seems to have been built around My Fair Lady; she is uncouth, which she blames on being half Punjabi from her mother’s side! Fawad, otherwise, known to be a very natural and endearing actor from what one sees of him on TV, is wasted; he is made to carry just one-and-a-half expressions throughout the film. Fawad’s greatest asset, his smile, is at a premium here. Ratna’s casting, in a role her mother played in the 1980 original, is supposed to be the casting coup, but backfires with poor etching of her character. Aamir Raza is turned into caricatures.

    ‘Daawat-e-Ishq’: No thanks…

     

    Yash Raj Films have been trying new subjects for some time now. With Daawat-e-Ishq, they try to bring back a Muslim background love story. But, this is a love story with an angle of dowry and getting back at dowry seekers. It also tries to juxtapose two prominent Muslim cultures, those of Hyderabad and Lucknow.

     

    Parineeti Chopra is a shoe shop sales girl in Hyderabad even as she continues to study for she is a topper who wants to specialise in shoe designing. Her father, Anupam Kher, is a clerk in the high court two years short of retirement. He is honest and hence, of limited means.

     

    It is time to look for a suitor for Parineeti. The problem for Anupam and Parineeti is that, her qualification does not count for anything to the boys’ families. The amount of dowry is what matters to them. This leads to a chain of rejections for her. Kher has a limit of 15 lakh but the gap is too much between what he can manage and what the boys’ parents demand. Since dowry is a bad word, one boy’s parents ask Kher to ‘help’ their son go to the US for further studies; all he needs is 80 lakh for that purpose.

     

    Parineeti is an aggressive girl and keeps throwing out such parents. She decides that marriage is not for her and, instead, embarks on a mission to trap such families who demand dowries and have them sent to jail. Kher takes some convincing but finally agrees to the plan. Doing this in their native Hyderabad would be too risky so their choice falls on Lucknow.

     

    The father daughter duo go for a total makeover, pose as millionaires from Dubai and check in at a five star Lucknow hotel. Next, they shortlist grooms from a marriage website and invite them for a meeting. A camera has been placed to record the proceedings of all such interviews. One of them happens to be Aditya Roy Kapur. He runs the city’s famous restaurant known for its kebabs, biryani etc with century old recipes inherited from his forefathers.

     

    Kapur is a simple hearted only son of his parents, popular with his customers as well as all around the city. For wedding, his parents’ wish list would cost Kher a cool 40 lakh. Parineeti agrees to the proposal and decides the nikaah would take place in two days’ time. However, Kapur wants three days to meet and know Parineeti better. After all her idea is to marry and then file a complaint with the police and demand a huge sum to settle the matter.

     

    The plan works, Kher and Parineetti walk off with a huge loot for Parineeti to pursue her dream of studying designing in the US. But, what she did not on count has happened. She has fallen in love with Kapur in those three days.

     

    The problem with this film is that it takes over half an hour to come to the real story before it sets up the background for Parineeti’s plan of taking on a dowry seeker. And when it happens, there are no twists and turns and lacks in drama of any sort. The approach to direction and storytelling is lacklustre. There are no highlights. The film has a catchy musical score with a blend of old world charm. Dialogue is routine. There is little about performances that stays with a viewer. Parineeti is her usual self. Kapur is over the top, loud being his idea of projecting simplicity. Kher is okay.

     

    Daawat-e-Ishq is a routine fare below expectations.

    Disney India and Anil Kapoor team up to produce ‘Khoobsurat’

    MUMBAI: The Walt Disney Studios has announced its next film ‘Khoobsurat’, a wholesome family entertainer in association with actor-producer Anil Kapoor and producer Rhea Kapoor. The film is being directed by writer and an ace ad-film director Shashank Ghosh and will star Sonam Kapoor in the lead role. 

    The film has great ensemble cast which includes Kirron Kher, Ratna Pathak Shah and Amir Raza Hussain. The film narrates the story of Mili (Sonam Kapoor), an exuberant, vivacious and fun girl, who turns the lives of a royal family upside down. 

    For a long time now we were looking for a script with Disney’s values and we’re happy to have found that in ‘Khoobsurat’. A delightful film, I believe that ‘Khoobsurat’ is entertainment with a heart. We are also looking forward to working with Anil Kapoor Film Company on this lovely film,” said Disney UTV senior creative director – studios Rucha Pathak.

    “We are so excited to bring you ‘Khoobsurat’ with Disney India. Disney always stood for wholesome and heartwarming entertainment and we look forward to creating that with this film as well.     The film went on the floors recently in Bikaner, Rajasthan and will hit the screens by mid-2014.
